Couldn't Stand the Pressure
An old gentleman by the name of George Mable was brought down from Verdi night
before last apparently in a dying condition from the effects of an overdose of
opium.  He was removed to the hospital for treatment.  He administered the
deadly drug himself, but whether with suicidal intent or not is not known.  The
old gentleman's wife lives in Canada, and is known to be in comfortable
circumstances.  He came to this Coast about ten months ago and traveled through
California, Oregon and Washington Territory in search of a desirable place to
settle, failing in which he came to Reno about a month ago on his way to Canada
and put up at the Lafayette hotel.  He soon run short of funds, which seemed to
worry him greatly.  He wrote home for money, but for some reason it did not come
as expected, which seemed to augment his troubles.  The landlord told him to
rest easy, that his money would come all right in time but this did not satisfy
him.  A few days ago he left the hotel without warning and was next heard of at
Verdi in the condition above stated.  The conclusion is inevitable that in a fit
of despondency he took the opium with the deliberate intention of committing
suicide.  He lingered until 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon when he died.  John
Mable, a nephew, was notified of the occurrence early yesterday morning, and
came down by conveyance, reaching the Hospital just in time to witness the old
gentleman's death.  The remains will be taken to Virginia this morning for
interment.
