MAPES, one of the best known and most loved women in the > city of Reno, died last night at her home, 509 Ralston street, the victim > of a heart attack. > > The widow of one of the most widely known citizens of Reno, Mrs. MAPES had > been active in church and social affairs and had a host of firends in the > city. At the time of her death she was surrounded by all of the members of > her family and her physician, Dr. A. L. Stadtherr. > > Born JOSEPHINE WHITCRAFT, September 28, 1848, at La Porte, Indiana, Mrs. > MAPES crossed the plains in an ox team when she was four years old. Her > father became justice of the peace in Plumas county, California. > > In 1866, Josephine WHITCRAFT married George Washington MAPES in Beckwith, > Cal., and came to Nevada on a honeymoon trip, to reside here the rest of > her life. > > The couple had eight children, but lost four of them, victims of > diphtheria, within six weeks. Three children are living now and all are > active in business and social affairs of the state. Always interested in > young people, Mrs. MAPES has given a home to 20 young girls and provided > for their college education and musical training. > > Mrs. MAPES was a charter member of Trinity Guild of the Episcopal church, > General O. M. Mitchell Relief Corps, Rebekah Lodge No 7 and the Twentieth > Century Club. At various times she has filled all of the offices of the > Relief Corps. > > Among other organizations were the Elderberry Club, composed of pioneer > women of Nevada, Nevada Federation of Women's Clubs, of which she was > chairman of the Pro-need department at the time of her death, and the > Parent-Teachers' Association. She was also an honorary member of the > Whitaker Seminary for girls and the Latimer Art Club. > > Surviving Mrs. MAPES, and with her at the time of her death, were the > following children, with the following children, with their wives and > children: Mr. and Mrs. George L.
