James Edward Negley died at his home on Second street, after six years of painful suffering. Mr. Negley was born in Kentucky in 1843. He was the second son of Dr. David and Francis Negley of that State. He came to Reno nine years ago, and six years of that period he has been a victim of rheumatism, and for the most part confined to his house. When but 18 years old he enlisted in the Confederate army, under General George Chism, together with two brothers, who were killed. Mr. Negley was wounded two or three times, and finally attacked by white swelling in the right leg and was obliged to retire from the army. The ravages of war cost his family the accumulations of a life time, but he went bravely to work to regain their losses, in merchandising at Paris, Tenn. The failure of a bank left him stranded, after having amassed a nice little fortune at that place, and in the ho0pe that the tide would turn his way; he came to Reno, where, for six years, he has been an invalid. His wife furnishes an illustration of what a noble woman can do for those she loves. She has been unremitting in her care and attention of her husband during all these years of misfortunate, supporting her little family with but very little assistance from the cold, unfeeling world. Mr. Negley was a devout Catholic and a great reader. All the comfort he has enjoyed for over five years was in his religious faith and what he could glean from newspapers and books. He leaves a wife and a beautiful little girl about 11 years of age and a bright little boy several years younger, and two brothers—one of them in San Francisco. He will be buried from the Catholic Church tomorrow at 10:30 o’clock.
