A Sad Accident
A. O. Ordway is Crushed to Death by a Horse
Last evening about 6 o’clock, A. O. Ordway, a farmer on the meadows met with a
strange accident, which caused his death a half hour later.  He attempted to
cross a ditch on horse back, when his horse slipped and fell lengthwise of the
ditch, Mr. Ordway falling crosswise with the horse lying with his back down and
square across Mr. Ordway’s abdomen.  The ditch being narrow, the horse could not
regain a footing and in his struggle to free himself, ground Mr. Ordway into the
mud and injuring him internally, with the result above stated.  His call for
help attracted the attention of Mrs. Blasdell and two men near by, who released
him and rendered such assistance as was possible, that he breathed his last
shortly after reaching his house.  The deceased was an old Pacific coast
pioneer, having landed at the Golden Gate in 1852.  For several years he was
merchandising in Virginia, and the old house of Ordway & McMellan will be
remembered by all old timers.  He purchased the old Hickman ranch on the
meadows, last Summer, where he was living at the time of his death.  He leaves a
wife and two children of his own, a boy and girl, and two step daughters and
son.  He was a member of Mount Davidson Lodge of I.O.O.F. of Virginia City.  The
family have the deep sympathy of this community where they are very highly
esteemed.
The funeral will take place tomorrow at 2 o’clock, from the family residence on
Lake Street.  Rev. Mr. Lucas will conduct the service.
