Reno Evening Gazette October 6, 1888 How It Happened Further Particulars Regarding the Death of Pratt, the Hot Springs Operator Wadsworth, Nev. Oct. 5, 1888 Editor Gazette.—C. S. Pratt, a telegraph operator at Hot Springs, was relieved at that place yesterday morning for the purpose of taking a similar position at Teano. While waiting for the east bound passenger train, he said he would go over to the Springs and take a bath. As he was absent longer than was necessary and the train time drew night, the lady operator sent a Chinaman to call him. The Chinaman came running back and reported that he had found Pratt near the Springs with his clothes on, crazy and badly scalded. The man was brought to Wadsworth on a special, but he was beyond the physician’s aid and died at 4:15 P.M. During sane moments he made several contradictory statements to Judge Angus. One to the effect that he went to the Springs and sat on the bank to rest; he was overcome by the heat and fell in, but succeeded in climbing out. He also told a second and probably true story, to the effect that he had become morbid through continual night work and jumped into the hot water to commit suicide. A post mortem examination revealed the fact that the body and members were literally cooked by the hot water. He was a young man, probably twenty-five years of age, and has relatives in Utah. Report says he is a member of the family of the well-known Mormon, Orson Pratt, of Salt Lake City. The remains were shipped there for interment.
