Ross will be held at the M. E. Church at 2 P.M. Sunday. The remains will be taken to Los Angeles and placed in a vault until a special one can be built to receive them. Weekly Reno Gazette April 10, 1884 The Last Sad Rites The Funeral of the Late Robert E. Ross and the Departure of the Remains The funeral services of the late Robert E. Ross at the M. E. Church Sunday afternoon was very largely attended. Pioneer friends and long time acquaintances of the deceased from Long valley, Reno, the meadows and for miles around more than crowded the auditorium of the church and many had to remain standing in the vestibule and out of doors for want of standing room inside. Rev. De La Matry preached the funeral sermon selecting for his text the 14th verse of the 4th Chapter of James- “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth and then vanisheth away.” The pastor paid very proper tribute to the memory of the deceased and treated the text in a clear and logical manner, illustrating the philosophical relations of the moral and intellectual man, as shown in the operation of Nature’s physical laws. The remains were enclosed in a beautiful metallic casket, and the body had been carefully embalmed by undertaker Sanders. On the casket were placed a floral wreath of lilies of the valley, maiden’s hair fern, and other natural flowers, in the center of which was worked in the same flowers the monogram of the deceased. R. E. R. A floral cross and an anchor completed the floral decorations. Every person present who knew the deceased sympathized and mourned with the afflicted widow, daughter, brother, and relatives. After the services the remains were conveyed to the Masonic Hall, where they have been laying in state since last Thursday, and this morning they were placed on board the westbound overland for their final resting place at Los Angeles, accompanied by the widow, daughter, Albert E. Ross, the brother of the deceased, and Mrs. Arrowsmith. William Ross also accompanied the mourners and will have immediate charge of the remains on the journey. Thus has gone from our midst one of the noblest of men, beloved by all who knew him, and respected by the entire community among whom his whole active life has been past. A large assemblage of friends were at the depot this morning to witness the departure of the remains and offer their sympathy to the afflicted mourners.
