Sellers Drowned J. S. Sellers, the carpenter, was drowned in the river at Mayberry’s this afternoon. He was at work with some other men in putting a new pier into the bridge. The pier was being floated down to its place, and Sellers, becoming entangled in a guiding rope, was dragged into the stream. He was seen struggling in the water for some time before he finally disappeared. Efforts are being made to recover the body. Mr. Sellers leaves a wife and a family of four sons and a daughter. He was an old resident and a good, honest man, well-known throughout the county March 31, 1881 The Body of J. S. Sellers Found The body of J. S. Sellers was recovered this morning, and now he’s in ice at Sanders & Neales. It drifted with the pier down the river a mile and a half below Mayberry’s. The rope which drew Sellers into the water got caught around his leg and kept him tied to the pier. The head and trunk show many bruises, and it is conjectured that the drowned man struck against a rock and was stunned almost immediately after falling into the river. It appears that the pier when being floated down to its place under the bridge was guided by two ropes, one to each bank of the river. One of the ropes broke, and the sudden strain on the other, which had been slack, in some way threw Sellers and J. L. McFarlin into the water. McFarlin scrambled out without injury, but Sellers was entangled in the rope and could not get out. The time for the funeral had not been fixed at two o’clock today. Daily Nevada State Journal April 1, 1881 Sellers’ Funeral The body of J. S. Sellers was unlashed yesterday morning from the pier to which it had been lashed all of Wednesday night, and brought down to town and placed in care of Sanders & Neale. It will be removed to his late residence this morning, from which place the funeral will take place at 2 o’clock. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend.
