Tuntland passed away June 18, 2007, in Las Vegas, with the same strength, dignity and elegance that had defined her life. She was surrounded by family as she made her short ascension to the heavens. She was loved dearly and well respected by friends and family, she will be greatly missed but her wonderful spirit will forever remain in our hearts and actions. She was born in 1937 in Stockton, Calif., and moved a few years later with her family to Reno. There she grew up attending Veteran's Memorial Elementary School and eventually graduating from Reno High School in 1956. She had the good fortune of remaining in close contact with a number of her high school classmates throughout the years and had just celebrated their 50-year class reunion last summer. After high school she worked various jobs eventually meeting her husband, Larry, while they both were employed at the former First National Bank of Nevada. They were married in February of 1963, and welcomed their first son in September of 1965. He was followed by a second son in June of 1970. She would work part-time on and off when enough time could be afforded from homemaking and the array of responsibilities associated with the raising of two active boys. The family moved to Las Vegas in 1983, where she immediately became involved with the community, forging relationships with a number of wonderful people. These became friendships that she would hold dear for the remainder of her life. While in Las Vegas, she became active with Bishop Gorman High School as she had remained with Bishop Manogue High School in Reno. This support of Gorman High School was formally acknowledged as she and Larry were bestowed the honor of being inducted into the Royal Order of the Gael in March of 1992. She and her husband eventually relocated to Reno shortly before his retirement in 1996. Although she was blessed with her many beautiful friendships, family was and remained her true love and primary purpose in life. Her love, guidance and spirituality truly made her the foundation of her family. Although we will miss her tremendously, even in her passing, we sense her efforts in a continuance to make us better individuals. She is survived by her husband, Larry; two sons, Daniel and Ray, his wife Leigh, and their daughter, Taylor; and Joan's brothers, Raymond and Ron. An informal visitation and prayer service will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, at Walton's Funeral Home, 875 W. Second Street, Reno. A Mass of Catholic Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 100 Bishop Manogue Drive in Reno. The celebrant of the mass shall be Father Richard Rinn, Pastor of St. Viator Catholic Church in Las Vegas with special assistance from Father Mike Mahone, Pastor of St. Albert Catholic Church in Reno, each long time family friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary's Hospital in Reno and/or the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas.
