WASHOE [LEONARD, Honora Calahan 5/22/1916] Nevada State Insane Asylum News Articles (#14) Compiled by Sue Silver (/ss) Reno Evening Gazette, 5/25/1916 INMATE OF STATE HOSPITAL HAS BROKEN NECK Dummy Elevator Falls in Shaft Killing Honora Leonard, An Aged Patient Honora Leonard, who was committed to the state hospital for mental diseases from Storey county in 1883, was instantly killed at noon Monday when a dummy elevator fell and broke her neck. The aged woman was acting as a waitress and had brought the last load of food in the elevator and after starting it up again she apparently stuck her head in the shaft to see if it was working. The rope slipped off the pulley allowing the heavy cage to drop about 30 inches and wedged her head between the bottom of the cage and the side of the shaft breaking her neck. Immediately following the accident Coroner Devine of Sparks was summoned and conducted an investigation but held no inquest. He absolved all attendants at the hospital of blame, as the elevator was equipped with double safety appliances. The elevator had been operated by the same woman for nearly 10 years and she was thoroughly familiar with it. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon and the body buried in the plot near the hospital. She was a native of Ireland and as far as known had no relatives in this country.
