Sutherland. September 1778, 9 months, rank of Private, with Capt. Brinhall under Col. Sutherland. September 1780, 3 months, rank of Private, with Capt. Colbe Chamberlin under Col. Hopkins and also with Capt. Bostwick under Col. Whiting. October 1781, 3 weeks, rank of Private, with Capt. Herrick under Col. Whiting. Summary of principal events and dates: Battles engaged: Taken prisoner 19 May 1776 at The Cedars, Canada and subsequently exchanged. Also was at the Burning of Schoharie in central NY. Residence of soldier at enlistment: Amenia (also known as Oblong), Dutchess County, New York. Date of application: 25 July 1832. His claim was allowed at $80 per annum. Residence at date of application: Westerlo, Albany County, New York. Age at date of application: Born 19 September 1755 at Amenia, Dutchess County, New York. Remarks: Soldier was married at Amenia, New York on 31 October 1779 by a Presbyterian minister to Abigail Hubbel who was born 15 August 1762. Soldier died 20 December 1842 at Westerlo, New York. His widow, Abigail, continued receiving a widow's pension until she died 3 January 1848. Her claim was supported by both an authenticated marriage record (issued by the State of Connecticut, Fairfield County for the Hartford Probate District which verified church marriage records from Reverend Ebenezer Knibloe of the Church in Oblong-on-the-Green ) and also pages of the family bible that were submitted as documentation evidence. The cover sheet was from a 1790 bible and the attached pages documented birth and marriage dates for the soldier, Simon, for his wife, Abigail, and their seven children; Louis Whitcomb born 30 June 1780, Roswell Whitcomb born 1 January 1784, Altanah Whitcomb born 15 July 1787, Asenath Whitcomb born 25 December 1792, Abigail Whitcomb born 22 May 1798, Submit Whitcomb born 25 January 1802, and Finetta Whitcomb born 26 November 1804. At the time the soldier's widow died on 3 January 1848, there were four surviving adult children; Roswell Whitcomb of Monroe County NY, Submit Bootenhower, Altanah Dickson, and Abigail Gossman of Albany County NY. In a Power of Attorney submitted 17 January 1852, only Roswell Whitcomb and Abigail Gossman still survived.
