Chiera, age 81, passed away peacefully at the Inn at St. Peter's Hospital with her loving family at her side on July 27, 2004. Born on March 15, 1923 in Albany, she was the beloved daughter of the late Peter and Mary Berschwinger Schafer. The loving wife of Anthony (Tony) Chiera who passed away on July 13, 1969. Helen has been a Guilderland resident since 1967 and formerly resided in Albany. She loved her family, home, flowers and gardening and country books. Helen was a communicant of St. Madeleine Sophie Church. Survivors include her loving daughter, Joan Simone of Guilderland; her loving son, John Chiera of Watervliet; her devoted son-in-law, Joseph (Butch) Simone of Guilderland; one loving granddaughter, Lyn Chiera of Watervliet; one sister, Betty Foley and her husband Don of Slingerlands; nieces, Carol Vanne of Greenwich and Patricia Coleman of Delmar and one grandnephew, Mike Lynch of Va. and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Pittsfield, Mass. and was the son of Robert Collins Jr. of Guilderland and Deborah S. (Fonda) Collins of Harveys Lake, Pa. He worked several local jobs and his fondest memories were of his work at Dunkin Donuts. He loved to hunt and fish and also competed in Tae-Kwon-Do, where he won several AAU medals. He attended Berlin and Guilderland Schools. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepmother, Valerie Roundy-Collins; a brother, John Collins of Stephentown, N.Y.; a sister, Cathlyne Collins of Harveys Lake, Pa.; two stepbrothers, Blake and Bradley Roundy-Ferris of Guilderland; his grandparents, Cathlyne and Morgan Lawless of Stephentown, Robert and Anita Collins of Byron Ctr., Mich. and Joan Houghtaling of Hudson, N.Y.; his aunts, Mary (Collins) and Jeff Zaremba and Karin (Fonda) and Alan Silvernale; one Uncle Keith and Janice Meyerhoffer. DELMAR Paul William Fisher, 87, departed this life on July 26, 2004 at Albany Medical Center Hospital with his loving wife Joyce and his family at his side. Paul was born to the late William and Elizabeth (Engelhart) Fisher in Albany, April 17, 1917. Paul was a graduate of Niagara University, Class of 1938. He was a veteran of World War II and, as a captain in the U.S. Army, served in the American Theater, Asiatic Pacific Theater and the European African Middle Eastern Theater. He was also a longtime member of the Normanside Country Club. Paul was a manufacturers representative and president of Fisher Associates for many years. He leaves to mourn his devoted wife, Joyce Beazley Fisher, of 58 years; his children, Victoria Fisher of Delmar and Mark Fisher of Albany; his sister, Rose Mary Hannon of Delmar; two granddaughters, Kate and Lily Schoenbach; and several nieces and nephews. DELMAR Helen D. Simkins George, 78 years, of Delmar died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at her home. She was born in Rensselaer and was the daughter of the late Raymond and Dorothy Simkins. She was valedictorian of the Class of 1944 at Van Rensselaer High School. She attended State Teachers College before changing careers, attending Albany Pharmacy College, completing her studies in three years. Helen was a pharmacist and worked in several local drugstores including two that she and her husband owned and operated in the area: Plaza Pharmacy in Delmar and the Empire Plaza Pharmacy in the Empire State Plaza. She started her career in Burns Pharmacy in Rensselaer. She was the wife of 37 years of George M. George; loving sister of Marion J. Hollner of Albany; devoted aunt of Lynn (Mark) Carlson of Rensselaer, Lisa( Guy) Empie of New Baltimore, Matthew (Marrianne) George of Yorktown Heights and Andrew George of New York City; great-aunt of Alex, Nathan and Ryan Carlson, Gregory and Jennifer Empie and Timothy and Christine George; sister-in-law of Vangel and Catherine George of Albany; dear cousin of Thomas Simkins of Troy and Evelyn Smith of Sudbury, Mass.; also survived by many family and friends. Mrs. Edna Virginia Hood, 102, of Charlotte and formerly of Albany, N.Y., died Monday, July 26, 2004 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Charlotte, N.C. Mrs. Hood was born in Albany, N.Y. on June 15, 1902 to the late Jacob and Anna Reineman. Mrs. Hood was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Albany, where for many years she served as Sunday school teacher. Edna was very active in the womens group and served as the local secretary for the AAL Insurance Company for more than 25 years. After retiring from Sterling Winthrop Company Inc. as a machine operator she volunteered at several nursing homes for many years. She is preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy G. Hood. Her survivors include, sons, LeRoy Hood and wife, Kathryn of Cary, N.C. and Kalmon Hood and wife, Ruth of Charlotte; sister, Ruth Wolfe of Guilderland, N.Y.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Born in Troy, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Thomas E. and Frances Lyons Jones. She was raised in Green Island and lived there for several years until moving to Watervliet. Charlotte was a 1969 graduate of Shaker High School. She was married to her beloved husband Roland on July 11, 1970 and has resided in Cohoes with him since. She was formerly employed by K-Mart in Latham and, for the last nine years, was currently employed by the Holiday Inn on Wolf Road in Colonie as the inspector of the housekeeping department. Charlotte enjoyed camping with her family and friends and loved vacationing with her family in Cape Cod and Maine. Survivors in addition to her husband include her cherished son, Brian M. Loiselle of Cohoes; and her sisters, Patricia A. Mossey of Latham and Leanne F. Jones of Watervliet. She was the loving aunt to many nieces and nephews; beloved cousin to Victoria DeGroat of Johnson City and Michael Lyons of Wynantskill; the niece of Frank Lyons and the late Emma Lyons of Wynantskill and Jack Houle and the late Patricia Houle of Johnson City. GALWAY Dorothy M. Jones Manell, 82, of Galway, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at her home. She was wife of the late Richard F. Manell Sr. who died in 2000. Born in Rome, N.Y., daughter of the late Robert and Gwen Jones, she attended Mount Pleasant High School in Schenectady and received a bachelor's degree in home economics from Plattsburgh State College. Dorothy briefly worked as a substitute teacher at Galway School before raising six children with her husband. She enjoyed family, friends, dogs, quilting, sewing and cooking. Dorothy was an active 4-H leader for many years and also assisted her husband with his water well drilling business. Dorothy remained active in the community throughout her life and was a member of both the Galway Senior Citizens and the Country Crafters of Ballston Center. She was a breast cancer survivor of more than 40 years. Survivors include her six children, Richard F. (Donna) Manell Jr. of Gansevoort, Thomas (Marlene) Manell of Marlboro, Mass., Charles E. Manell of Broadalbin, Brenda (James) Rootes of Troy, Lynette (Thomas) Wiegand of Tallahassee, Fla. and Susan (Michael) Woodward of Lockport, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert Jones. Dorothy donated her body to the Anatomical Gift Program at the Albany Medical Center. There will be no calling hours. Philip Raphael McGrath Jr., of Newbury Park, died July 21, 2004. Philip is survived by his wife, Eileen Reilly McGrath, formerly of Colonie. COLONIE Jane M. Meyl, 89, of Colonie, passed away on Thursday, July 29, 2004 at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital. She was born in Utica, and was the daughter of the late William and Jennie O'Brien Miller. She moved to Albany in 1946 and then to Guilderland in 1952 where she resided until 1992 when she moved to Colonie. Mrs. Meyl was a homemaker most of her life. Jane's life work revolved around people, she was fast to make friends and took great pride in keeping them. Mrs. Meyl was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan, enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting and crocheting. She was proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and especially enjoyed spending time with them. Mrs. Meyl was the beloved wife of the late George N. Meyl. She is the devoted mother of Michael Meyl of Orange Park, Fla., Linda Murphy and her husband Jack of Colonie, William Meyl and his wife Mary of Sioux City, Iowa and Brian Meyl and his wife Diane Meyl Ehmann of Albany. She is the cherished grandmother of David Meyl (Laura), Daniel Meyl (Kimberlee), Sean Murphy (Suzanne), Ryan Murphy, Melissa, Nathan, Caitlin, Megan and Lindsey Meyl. Jane is the loving great-grandmother of Erin, Shane and Emma Murphy, Tyler, Justin, Ashleigh, Matthew, Nicholas and Emily Meyl and Jack Delehanty. He was born May 15, 1919 in Schenectady, the son of the late James and Laura Komp Murray. He was a graduate of Ballston Spa High School. Mr. Murray was a journalist early in his career, he was a reporter for the Gazette and Union Star and received recognition for his coverage of the Republican National Convention in 1948. He began his government service late in the 1940s and held various staff positions under New York State Governor, Thomas Dewey, including press secretary. He also worked with Assembly Speaker, Oswald Heck and Lieutenant Governor Moore. In 1960s, he oversaw the construction of the four year college within the New York State University and served as acting chancellor of the New York State University for several years. He was also appointed to serve on various state commissions by Governor Nelson Rockerfeller. During the 1970s he worked on the expansion of the New York State Mental Hygiene facilities and served in various senior positions within that department. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and conservationist. He was a member of the Edison Club, South Beach Assoc. and a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church. He is survived by his wife, Antoinette Anne Korowajczyk Murray, whom he was married to for 63 years. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She was a member of Women's Veterans Health Programs and was a communicant of St. Francis Chapel. RENSSELAER Alfred J. Myers Sr. went home to heaven peacefully at home July 28, 2004 after a long illness surrounded by his loving wife and family. Born June 7, 1920 to the late Alfred and Edna Myers of Albany, N.Y. Beloved husband of 57 years to Margaret M. (Kelley) Myers. Mr. Myers served his country in the Army from 1942-1945 and served in the European Theater and World War II. Mr. Myers received many Medals of Honor. He was an avid lover of Little League Baseball, both at the South End Little League in Albany and Rensselaer Little League. He coached and managed as well and could be seen at many games, watching his children and grandchildren proudly play his favorite sport. He was known and will always be remembered as Big Al. Mr. Myers was employed at the former Williams Press and Hamilton News and carried on with his sons and grandsons driving them around Rensselaer delivering newspapers to many customers for many years for the Troy Record. Mr. Myers was always on the go and enjoyed going to the Country Kitchen Thrift Store to pick up donated bread and baked goods and delivered them to the many children at Vanderheyden Halls Group Homes and Community Residences. He leaves behind to cherish his memories along with his beloved wife, his children, Alfred J. (Vanessa) Myers Jr. of Texas, Edward (Linda) Myers of Rensselaer, Edna Vandenburgh of Rensselaer, Margaret (Ed) Gilchrist of Fla., Keith Myers Sr. of N.H., Dean Myers of Rensselaer, Lawrence (Bea) Myers of Guilderland, Linda Beckwith of West Sand Lake, Douglas Myers of Albany, Kyle (Nicole) Myers of Rensselaer and Michael Myers of Utica. NASSAU Robert C. (Bob) Palmatier, 72, peacefully entered into eternal life July 22, 2004, at his son's home in Evansville, Ill. after a long illness. Bob resided in Nassau and Schodack, N.Y. most of his life. In his earlier years, Bob enjoyed the racing circuit at Lebanon Valley. Bob was a truck driver for many years. He drove a school bus for the East Greenbush School District. Before his retirement, his most recent employment was as a blood collection courier for Quest Diagnostics Inc., formerly Met Path. He was a long time member of the Rensselaer Elks Lodge BPOE 2073. Bob was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. Although Bob has left us, the special memories we shared will live in our hearts forever. Bob was predeceased by his mother, Ethelynn; his father, Charles; stepmother, Margaret; brother, Richard Palmatier; his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Joseph Chiera. He had resided in Averill Park and Poestenkill for most of his life and was a graduate of Averill Park High School. Hank was the owner and operator of Track and Turf Supply in Poestenkill for the past 25 years. Hank spent his entire life involved in the horse world. He owned and rode open jumpers. His dedication to the equine world provided many years of service and mentoring to area equestrians and their mounts. He was a member of the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Born in Clifton Park, she was the daughter of the late Wallace Ostrom and Ada (Mawby) Ostrom and wife of the late Douglas O. Waite. Mrs. Waite was continually employed in the securities industry for more than 75 years. She worked for the brokerage firm of Howell, Wiggin and MacArthur in Albany from 1929-1934 and was employed by the investment counsel partnership of Betts & Morris and its corporate successor, Van Cleef, Jordan and Wood from 1934 to date. She was a former trustee and treasurer of the Rensselaer County Historical Society in Troy. She is survived by her son, Orville Waite of Delmar; a brother, Wallace M. Ostrom of Clifton Park; and a number of nieces and nephews including Marjorie Peplowski and Gordon Ramsay. She was predeceased by a sister, Lois Ramsay and a brother, Kenneth Ostrom.
