Bookstein, Ethel ALBANY Ethel Polansky Bookstein, age 94, of the Ohav Sholom Apartments on Krumkill Road in Albany, died Monday evening August 23, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. She was born in NYC and has been a Capital District resident for many years. Mrs. Bookstein was a former employee of the NYS Unemployment Insurance Division. She was a member of Congregation Beth Abraham Jacob and the Tenants Association the Ohav Sholom Apartments. She was married to Jacob Bookstein until his passing in 1974. She is survived by three sisters, Ruth Cohen (Philip) of Albany, N.Y., Dorothy Wimpy of Spartensburg, South Carolina and Sara Matoon of Richland, Washington. She also leaves several nieces and nephews as well as great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by four brothers, Milton, David and Arnold Polansky and Isadore Polan. Frank was born in Coeymans and has lived in Ravena most of his life. Frank was employed for many years by Pemberton and Mountain View Bus Lines. Later, he was the water treatment supervisor for the Village of Ravena. He also served as a sergeant of the Village Police force. Born in Formicola, Italy on October 6, 1928, he was the son of the late Domenicantonio and Anna DiFrancesco Catone. He came to the United States in 1952 and settled in Watervliet. He was employed for over 39 years by American Steel & Aluminum in West Albany as a foreman before retiring 10 years ago. He was the best grandpa and was a musician. He belonged to a band while in Italy and played the clarinet. He also enjoyed playing the accordion and harmonica. His hobby was gardening. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Watervliet. He was the beloved husband of 55 years of Cristina Parillo Catone; loving father of Anthony Catone of Philadelphia, Pa., Anna Maria (Tom) Cook of Brunswick and Antonietta (Todd) Schroeder of Brunswick; proud grandfather of Frank Douglas Schroeder and Dominic Thomas Schroeder; brother of Mary Arpaia of Formicola, Italy; brother-in-law of the late Carmela Arpaia Mosca and Luigi Arpaia; uncle of Antoinette Sposito of Watervliet and Prisco Arpaia of Colonie. De Porte, David SLINGERLANDS David De Porte, 88, August 22, 2004 at Albany Medical Center. Former president of Van de Car, De Porte & Johnson, Inc. He was the advertising and public relations agency in Albany. Born in Ithaca, N.Y., he graduated from Milne High School in Albany and studied sculpture at Yale University School of Fine Arts and painting at the Art Students' League in New York City. His early professional experience included mural painting, with commissions in Kingston and Oneonta, N.Y., Los Angeles and Mexico City. He was the assistant muralist on the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company's 76-foot murals at the New York and San Francisco World's Fairs of 1939. During World War II, he served in the Army Special Services unit. Following Army service from 1942 to 1946, he worked in New York City advertising agencies as a visualizer and copywriter on national accounts, including Yardley of London, Texaco and The Emily Post Institution. For several years, he also produced shooting scripts and illustrations for crime magazines, comic books and designed illustrated souvenir programs for Broadway and off-Broadway productions. In 1952, he returned to Albany where he worked in local advertising agencies and in 1959, opened his own advertising firm. In 1961, he helped found the Van de Car, De Porte & Johnson agency of which he was president from 1970 to 1975. He was the former director of the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Association of Industrial Advertisers. His national awards included citations from the Creative Design League in New York City, the Award of Excellence from Standard Packing Corp., the highest merit award from Financial World and two awards from creative excellence from the Direct Mail Advertising Association. His work was commended by advertising and paper industry magazines and several of his more than 50 articles on historical aspects of papermaking were translated into Spanish and Portuguese for South American publication. After leaving the advertising agency field in 1975, he became public relations consultant to public radio station WAMC-FM in Albany, then operated by Albany Medical College and served on a national advisory panel in Washington, D.C. for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. When the magazine New York Alive was launched, he assisted in planning and guiding the advertising program that helped sustain it. During these years, he continued as a consultant to his former agency. His biography appeared in Who's Who in the East and was listed in the 38th edition of Who's Who in America. He was the son of the late Joseph and Sophie Gershoy De Porte. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Katherine Thompson De Porte; father of David H. De Porte of New York City and Jean De Porte Wheeler (Morris) of Malta; grandfather of Maia. Donlon, 76, formerly of Lansingburgh, died August 20, 2004 at her residence in Holiday, Fla. after a long illness. Born in Troy, she was the daughter of the late John and Alvina Piche Sweeney Sr. and wife of the late John J. Donlon. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Donlon became owner and president of Donlon & Son Insurance Agency in Cohoes, which she operated for several years until her retirement. She was a former resident of St. Patrick's Parish in Troy and Wolfert's Roost Country Club of Albany and many civic and professional organizations. Mrs. Donlon was the sister of Edward F. Sweeney of Holiday, Fla. and the late Miles P. Sweeney, John J. Sweeney Jr. and Mary Alice Boyko; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Doody, 64, of Troy, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his family and loved ones, has returned home to God on Monday, August 23, 2004. Born in Troy, he was husband of Kathleen A. Doody (Heaphy), and son of Mary Doody and the late Peter Doody Sr. Bob was a graduate of Troy High School and HVCC and studied music at the Troy Conservatory of Music. He had also served in the United States Navy. After retiring from Ford Motor Company, he also worked for the department of social services and St. Michael's R.C. Church. He was a communicant of St. Michael's Church where he was greatly involved in many of its ministries including music, youth and religious education, and a member of the men's club. Bob spent a great deal of his time providing support to many community organizations including his volunteer work for Rensselaer County Community Hospice, Meals-on-Wheels, Van Rensselaer Manor and St. Mary's Outreach Program. Jane was born and educated in Albany and was the daughter of the late J. Robert and Anna Hendrick. She graduated from Albany High School in 1940 and was active with all of the reunion committees and was a member of Better Gamma Chi Sorority. Jane was interested in Republican politics and served as president of the former 14th ward, now known as the 16th ward in Albany. She was president of the Albany County Women's Republican Club and president of the Republican Women of the Legislature. Jane was an alternate delegate to the State Convention in Kansas City. She worked at the State Legislature for 23 years as a secretary for several Senators. She worked for Assemblyman Gordon Burrows after retiring from the Senate Fiscal Office. Jane was active in VFW circles and president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Sheehy-Palmer Post 6776 for eight years. She was also president of Albany County Council Ladies Auxiliary VFW where she was recognized as Auxiliary President of the Year. She helped organize the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Department of New York when they relocated from New York City to Albany. Jane was the first secretary with the department in Albany. She was a census taker in 1960 and 1970. Jane was an active volunteer at the Stratton Veterans Medical Center and Eden Park Nursing Home. She was a member of the Supreme Cootiette Club and served as a V.A.V.S. volunteer for ten years. She was predeceased by her husbands, Paul J. Heaphy, Victor J. Newberry Jr. and Albert Coyle; her brother, Richard Paul Hendrick and her son David J. Newberry. Jane is the devoted mother of Robert A. Newberry of Glenmont, Victor J. He also belonged to the Dokies, an affiliate group of the Knights of Pythias. He was the son of the late David and Jessie Gingold Mosler. He is the nephew of Fay Gingold Greenstein of Albany. Mrs. O'Brien was admitted to the New York State Bar Association in 1947 and began her law career in her father's law firm on State Street in Albany. Mrs. O'Brien was a former member of the Ladies of Charity of the Albany Diocese, St. Peter's Hospital Auxiliary, Junior League of Albany, Albany Country Club, University Club and the Women's Council of the Albany Institute of History and Art. She also was a former member of the Teresian House Foundation Board. Mrs. O'Brien served as the attorney rules clerk for the New York State Court of Appeals for 15 years. She worked in legal publishing including the Tax Digest and Radco, Inc. of Long Island and Newkirk Associates, Latham, N.Y. Mrs. O'Brien was a former law guardian for Albany County Family Court as designated by the appellate division of Supreme Court, third department. She was an avid Bridge player and loved both being a grandmother and sharing a summer residence in Manchester, Vt. with her late husband, Jay Cox O'Brien. She was the mother of Stephen S. O'Brien of NYC and Carol Anne Hargis of Chatham; beloved grandmother of Brigit S. Hargis; sister of Sr. Maribeth Tobin, RSCJ of Albany and the late Charles J. Tobin Jr. and Edmund B. Tobin; sister-in-law of Catherine N. Tobin and Dorothea Tobin; six nephews and many loving friends at the Beverwyck also survive. She is a life member of Hadassah and volunteered her time at both Temple Israel and the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center for over 25 years. She was a remarkable person and was much loved by all who knew her. She fought bravely with determination to the end. She was married to Ben D. Smith until his passing in 1973. CASTLETON Robert J. van Beusichem, 61, passed away at Community Hospice in St. Peter's Hospital on Friday, August 20, 2004 after battling pancreatic cancer. Most recently, he was employed by the Schodack Central School District, where as a school bus driver he went beyond driving to really caring for his special needs passengers. A musician at heart, Bob was an original member of the Bavarian Barons. He worked for several years as director of the Maple Hill High School Jazz Ensemble. He also played with other Capital District groups including the Joey Thomas Big Band, the Diane Marlowe Big Band of the Northeast and the SwingDocs.
