ALBANY Ruth M. Bardin, age 39 years, of Wood Terrace, passed peacefully into eternal life on Wednesday, August 25, 2004. She was a lifelong resident of Albany. Ruth was a free spirit who loved life and animals. She fought a courageous battle during her long illness. Loving daughter of Alice Mercier Bardin of Albany. Her memory will be forever cherished by her three children, Dennis, Shauna and Brandi. Bazakis, Harry SARATOGA SPRINGS Harry Bazakis, a summer visitor to Saratoga Springs and a resident of Boynton Beach, Fla., died suddenly Monday, August 23, 2004 at Saratoga Hospital. He was 77. Born on September 28, 1926 in Troy, N.Y., he was the son of Michael and Anna Bazakis. He grew up in Troy, N.Y. and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was an active member of St. Mark's Greek Orthodox Church in Boca Raton, Fla. His son, Michael Bazakis, and a sister, Mary Mazarakis, both died before him. He is survived by a loving wife of 56 years, Barbara (Bakoli) Bazakis; a daughter, Katina Austin and her husband Robert of Saratoga Springs; two grandchildren, William R. Austin and his wife Shannon and Michael H. Austin; one great-granddaughter, Kora Austin; two brothers, George Bazakis of Troy, N.Y. and James Bazakis of Mich.; three sisters, Sophie Sokaris of Albany, N.Y., Evangeline Spyratos of Clearwater, Fla. and Georgia Samolis of Athens, Greece; several nieces and nephews. ALBANY Virginia A. Koreman Carey entered into eternal life on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 surrounded by her loving family. A lifelong Albany resident, she was born to Stephen J. Koreman and Mildred Redmond Koreman and graduated from Our Lady Help Of Christians School, St. Ann's High School and Mildred Elley Business School. After raising her family, she worked for several years for the State of New York, retiring from the state department of transportation in 1979. She was a communicant of St. James Church and was a member of its rosary society. Her love and devotion to her family were matched by her absolute devotion to her religion. Survivors include her husband of nearly 51 years, Joseph F. Carey; her children, Maureen A. (Robert) Somerville of Wynantskill, Stephen J. Carey of Los Angeles, Calif. and Edward J. Born in Albany, he was a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of School 20 and Christian Brothers Academy. He served on the executive board of Local No. 12 of the Ironworkers' Union and was a member of Local No. 12 for over 45 years. He was a member of the First Marine Raider Battalion known as Edsons Raiders, serving at Guadal Canal during World War II, receiving both the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. He was manager for North Albany Little League; former semi-pro football player for Sacred Heart in late 1930s; member and past-commander of the North Albany American Legion Post No. 1610, Albany Lodge of Elks No. 49, Albany Ancient Order of Hibernian, North Albany Limericks; lifetime member of Sacred Heart Church in North Albany. Son of the late Robert and Mary Anderson Carey. He loved his family, golf, the Green Bay Packers, the New York Yankees and was a Notre Dame fan. Beloved husband of 58 years of Rosemary Travison Carey; loving father of Michael P. Carey and his wife Patricia of Loudonville, Robert J. Carmichael, Nancy ALBANY Nancy Rae Sheldon Carmichael, 57, of Manning Blvd., Albany died on Wednesday, August 25, 2004 following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Albany, N.Y., she was the daughter of Elenore Hoyt Sheldon and the late George E. Sheldon Sr. She attended the Milne School, Shaker High School and Hudson Valley Community College. She worked at the NYS Division of Equalization and Assessment. She retired in 2002 from the same department which had then become the NYS Office of Real Property Services. She was vice president of Whiskers Animal Benevolent League in Albany and had a love for all of God's creatures. Nancy Rae loved the Lord Jesus for having saved her and for the gift of eternal life through faith in Him. She was a member of the Loudonville Community Church where she had been an active member of several women's circles and volunteered with the Bear's Fruit Food Pantry. Nancy Rae was married to the late Carlton Red' Graeme Carmichael, who died in 1998. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two brothers, George E. Sheldon Jr. of Ballston Lake and Jeffrey H. Sheldon of Bennington, Vt.; a best friend, Nancy Eckhardt of Albany; and her four wonderful cats, Furgus, Andrew, Cameo and Robert. Nicholas Nick Dackow, 86, of Lakewood, passed away on August 24, 2004. Born and raised in Paterson, N.J., he lived in East Paterson (Elmwood Park) before moving to Lakewood. He was the general manager for Haband of Paterson, retiring after 46 years. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Army Signal Corps in Europe. He performed as a violinist with the North Jersey Philharmonic and the Ridgewood Symphony and on saxophone and clarinet with the Happy Days String Band, the Ocean County String Band, the Old Guard Band of Point Pleasant and the Pyramids. He was a member of Kiwanis since 1947, serving as president of the Paterson Club and honored as their Man of the Year in 1979; also a member of the Lakewood Club. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Katherine Wengrenovich Dackow and his children, Sandra of Ridgewood, N.J., Paul of Flemington, N.J. and John and Laura of Halfmoon, N.Y. Delurey, Gloria HOOSICK FALLS Gloria Delurey, 77, died August 25, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, N.Y. after a short illness. She was the wife of John Delurey for 55 years and resided on High Street in Hoosick Falls. Gloria was born on January 10, 1927 in Raymertown, N.Y., daughter of Charles Rowland and Marie Diehl Rowland. Gloria grew up with a love of the outdoors and enjoyed camping and horseback riding. She also had a passion for square dancing and motorcycles. She graduated from Lansingburgh High School and then became a legal secretary, working for a leading law firm in Kingston, N.Y. Later she became an integral part of Delurey Sales & Service, and helped John build the business from the ground up. She delivered trucks, ran the office and is credited by all as being one of the reasons it became a success. All the while Gloria also devoted her energies to her children and her community. She served as cub scout den leader, past president of the ELKS Auxiliary, and later became an active Hospital Grey Lady in Bennington. With a friend, she initiated and ran the very first Funtastik Fair at St. Mary's Academy. She was always ready to set an extra plate for dinner if friends, family or neighborhood kids happened to walk through the door. Gloria enjoyed traveling, and together with John took many trips over the years throughout the U.S. and around the world. She still found time for gardening, baking her famous molasses cookies, playing cards with her husband and friends, and spending lots of time with all of her grandchildren. Survivors in addition to her husband include her daughter, Kathleen Fishman and her husband Elliott of Glenmont, N.Y. and her three sons, Dan, of Winchester, Mass. and his wife Robin, her son Jeffrey of Hoosick Falls and his wife Teresa, and her son David, also of Hoosick Falls and his wife, Gail. She is also survived by her sister, Eleanor Marpe of Melrose, N.Y. Gloria was predeceased by her sister, Arlene Matzen of Raymertown, N.Y. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, John and Keegan Delurey, Jennifer and Christopher Shannon, Ryan, Courtney and Sarah Delurey, Callen, Mallory and Aubrey Fishman, and Zachary, Aaron and Grace Delurey. She belonged to the women's auxiliary of the former Castleton American Legion Post. Flansburg, 80, of Guilderland Center, passed away on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Albany and was the son of the late Raymond E. and Ella C. Flansburgh. Walt was a Capital District resident for all of his life. Mr. Flansburg was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country during World War II. As a young boy, Walt was a caddy at Wolfert's Roost Country Club. He was an avid golfer and continued playing until his 80th year, enjoying many outings with his golf buddies, Gordon and Bill. He was especially proud of his Hole in One. Mr. Flansburg also enjoyed reading and rides in the country with his family. Walt is the beloved husband of 51 years to Ida M. Flansburg. He is the devoted father and Best Buddy to his daughter, Jacqueline L. Flansburg-Diehl and her husband, Karl of New Scotland. Walt was the brother of the late Earl, Floyd, Harold and Marion Flansburgh. At Walt's request, all services will be private. Interment will be in Albany Rural Cemetery. Frank had been a very active member of St. Ann Maronite Catholic Church in Troy and had been awarded the Massabki Medal, one of the highest honors of the Maronite Church. O'Brien, Alice T. ALBANY Alice T. O'Brien, 81, died Monday, August 23, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Charles J. and Sarah Devitt Tobin Sr. She was a graduate of the Kenwood Academy of the Sacred Heart, Manhattanville College and Albany Law School. Mrs. O'Brien was admitted to the New York State Bar Association in 1947 and began her law career in her father's law firm on State Street in Albany. Mrs. O'Brien was a former member of the Ladies of Charity of the Albany Diocese, St. Peter's Hospital Auxiliary, Junior League of Albany, Albany Country Club, University Club and the Women's Council of the Albany Institute of History and Art. Sonny Simon, 79, of Pine Woods Road, Melrose, died Wednesday morning, August 25, 2004 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Before his retirement in 1988, he had been a highway maintenance worker for the NYS DOT in Center Brunswick, N.Y. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. Some of his interests were music and dancing, playing the organ and fishing and camping with his family. He was a master of many trades including a radio and television repairman. He maintained bowling machines in both Schaghticoke and Greenwich. He was also a technical supervisor for Westinghouse Appliances. A member of the Melrose Methodist Church, the Melrose Fire Department and American Legion Post 731. Solomon, Grace PLANTATION, Fla. Grace Giglio Solomon (Scognamillo) died peacefully on Sunday, August 22, 2004 at Plantation General Hospital, Plantation, Fla. Born on February 24, 1919 on the lower east side of Manhattan, Grace was the daughter of Mattea and Carmelo Scognamillo, Italian immigrants from Messina, Italy. She received her only formal education at the Transfiguration Elementary School on Mott Street where the first American canonized saint, Mother Cabrini, ministered to the Italian community in the church basement. A former resident of Grant City, Staten Island for over 30 years, Grace became a resident of Fla. in 1976 and, for several years before her health began to decline, became very active as a volunteer at the Broward County Lighthouse for the Blind. Grace was the widow of Charles J. Giglio of Staten Island and Sol Solomon of Fla. One of ten children, Grace was predeceased by eight of her siblings and is survived by her sister, Anna Solomon of Spring Valley, N.Y. Also surviving Grace and Charlie Giglio are their five children, Rose Marie (Ozzie) Follan of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Charles (Patricia) A. She was co-owner of Butts Farm Service in Castleton with her husband Ira for 18 years, retiring in 1998. She was Chatham Fair Queen in 1951 as well as a member of the Niverville Methodist Church. Dot was an avid gardener who loved cooking and, by all accounts from her family, was one of the most enthusiastic sports (especially softball) fans around who rarely missed a game.
