BALLSTON LAKE Joseph R. Corbett passed from this earthly realm on August 26, 2004. He was born on April 6, 1940, graduated from Vincentian High School in 1957 and attended Hudson Valley Community College. He served honorably with the New York National Guard during the early 1960s. Mr. Corbett was professionally employed by the State of New York from 1960 until his retirement in 1995. During this time, he worked primarily for the department of environmental conservation. His assignments included the graphics and publications unit and later undertaking field supervision of a wide array of departmental construction projects. Thousands of New Yorkers enjoy the fruits of his labor at boat launches (most notably the Moffitt's Beach boat launch, recognized as outstanding construction by the governor), ski areas and campgrounds throughout the state. Such was his expertise that even after retirement, he continued to serve as a consultant to the department. Mr. Corbett had a wide range of interests including sailing, literature, history and architecture. A skilled craftsman, he designed and constructed his own unique A-frame-based home and assisted with the construction of numerous other projects including a geodesic dome. Above all, Joe Corbett's passion was for motorsports. Introduced to automobile racing as a youngster at Empire Raceway in Menands, for nearly 60 years he relished his involvement as an enthusiast, competitor and, most notably, as an author and photojournalist. To him, motor racing was the only sport that ever mattered. His articles and photographs have been published in a wide array of magazines and books including Road & Track, Cycle News and Trackside, as well as appearing on several TV broadcasts. For many years, he was editor and publisher of RACING Magazine, distributed at Lime Rock Park and the Bridgehampton Race Circuit. In recognition of his tenure as well as his commitment to detail and accuracy, he was named Lime Rock Park historian and had amassed significant archives and artifacts in anticipation of the track's 50th anniversary in 2007. Reflecting his long involvement with the sport, he was a member of the Madison Avenue Sports Car Club and Chowder Society and also the Atlantic Coast Old-Timers. He was an ardent supporter of the International Motor Racing Research Center at Watkins Glen and the Saratoga Automobile Museum (SAM). At the time of his passing, a series of his photographs were on display at SAM. His most cherished moments in racing were the days when he and his son Trevor raced go-karts; they each won a few trophies but, most of all, there was the inestimable value of shared adventures. For his enthusiasm, generosity and good fellowship, he will be deeply missed, not only by his family but by friends beyond number from near and far. He is survived by his beloved wife and helpmate Marjorie (Alberts) Corbett, whom he married in 1963; his son, Trevor and daughter-in-law Lisa and their son, Evan Hunter. Trevor, Lisa and Evan are residents of Malta. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Peg Corbett of Albany.
