Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Andrea. A longtime resident of Rochester, she retired after working for the IBM Corporation for 30 years. After retirement, Alice was an active Rochester area hospital volunteer. Ms. Andrea was a longtime member of the Rochester Presbyterian Church. She traveled extensively to many regions of the world, most notably China, Jerusalem, Africa, Europe and the Soviet Union. Miss Andrea is survived by five nieces, Marilyn and Kim Spencer, Nancy Spencer Thomas, Carrol Brewer, Janet Andrea and two nephews, James Spencer and Tom Nicklas. Three sisters, Ollie Spencer of Delmar, Agnes Nicklas, Connie Andrea, and two brothers, Theodore Andrea and John Andrea of Albany, predeceased her. Anne Marie Buchanan, age 95, passed away after a brief illness at Copley Manor Nursing Home in Morrisville, Vt. on Wednesday, August 25, 2004. Marie was born on October 3, 1908, in Connelsville, Pa., the daughter of the late Margeurita (Eck) and Charles William Mielke. Among Marie's many interests was her devotion to her flower arranging. She spent many summers with her family at their cottage in Lake George and had a great appreciation for nature. She enjoyed getting together with her friends and played bridge at least once a week. Traveling was her true past time and she enjoyed many trips all over the world. She was often accused of having gasoline for blood. Her greatest love was for her family and her husband of 65 years, Chet. Marie is survived by her husband, Chet Buchanan; her son, Dave Buchanan and his wife Karol of Eden; her granddaughter, Erika; her sister, Grace Newkirk; her brother-in-law, Andy; her sister-in-law, Jeanne Buchanan; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Louis. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Rexford, N.Y. Local arrangements are in the care of Stafford Funeral Home in Stowe, Vt. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late John J. Devine Sr. and Mary Lasher Devine. He was predeceased by his loving wife and dear friend Veronica Reith Devine. He graduated from Christian Brothers Academy and attended Russell Sage College. Mr. Devine retired as deputy director with the N.Y. State Division of Veterans' Affairs in 1986 after 44 years of state service. He was a member of the Albany Elks Lodge No. 49 and served on the board of trustees from 1979 until 1996. He served as chairman of the board from 1987 until 1996. Mr. Devine was town chairman of the East Greenbush Democratic Committee from 1975 until 1984. He served on the Rensselaer County Democratic Executive Committee for nine of those years. He was high school basketball coach at St. Ann's Albany from 1946-1951. Mr. Devine was active in many community programs in East Greenbush, Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #173 Albany, the North Albany American Legion Post, the North Albany Limericks and the Sheehy-Palmer VFW Post in Albany. He was a first lieutenant with the Army Air Force as a bombardier during World War II with the 5th Air Force in the South Pacific where he completed 59 combat missions. Mr. Devine was a communicant of St. John/St. Ann in the South End of Albany. Survivors include three sons, John and his wife Barbara of Troy, James and his wife Debra of East Greenbush and Paul and his wife Lorie of Coxsackie; three daughters, Gail Fromaget and her husband Robert of Monroe, N.Y., Donna Pulver and her husband William of East Greenbush and Denice Beza and her husband Richard of East Greenbush; 12 grandchildren, Kimberly Young, Danielle Kilkelly, Heather Cammann, Michele Boudway, Melissa Stefanko, Kristin Pulver, Jennifer Beza, Christopher Beza, John M. Marie was active in Our Lady of Mercy Church and in the Tanglewood neighborhood of the Village of Colonie. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Ring and son-in-law Hilary Ring; her grandchildren, Holly and Jill, all of Port Washington, L.I. and her brother, Peter Donnelly of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Gillette, Robert Lee SCOTIA Robert Lee Gillette, 83, of Pershing Drive, Scotia, died Friday, August 27, 2004 at his residence after a long illness. Born April 9, 1921 in Schenectady, N.Y. to the late Luzern and Isabelle (Bouton) Gillette, he was a lifelong area resident. Robert attended Scotia High School, Class of 1939. He was a sheet metal worker for Local 83 for many years, then was a dispatcher for the Schenectady County Highway Department for six years. He retired in 1983. Robert was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European Theater as a sergeant in the 1st Ranger Battalion. He was a life member of American Ex-Prisoners of War, DAV Chapter 88 and VFW Order of the Purple Heart; past president of the Scotia Kiwanis Club; past village trustee for the Village of Scotia; volunteer for the American Red Cross Disaster Team, Food Pantry (where he was a driver) and for the Albany VA Hospital. He was a communicant of the First Baptist Church of Scotia. Kent passed into the hands of the Lord on August 24, 2004. A resident of Troy, he was born in Albany on March 28, 1946, son of the late Edward and Eleanor Sheehy Kent. He was educated in Albany school and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Vietnam from 1965-1967. A member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, he was employed as a cloth cutter in various factories in the Tri-City area for the past 30 years until his illness forced his retirement in January 2004. He is survived by his sister, June McCormack of Schenectady and 19 nieces and nephews in the area. He was the longtime companion of George Temple of Troy for 40 years. He was the brother of the late Marlene Kent, Edward Kent, Josephine (Dolly) Burnah and Janice McDonald. Thomasina is the daughter of the late Francis and Mary DeAngelis Ruby. She had worked in the newborn nursery unit at St. Peter's Hospital for 30 years, retiring in 1986. Tommie was a member of the Loudonville Arts & Crafts and the Albany Institute of History & Art. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and traveling around the world. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mercy Church and a member of its rosary society. Tommie was predeceased in 1980 by her husband Joseph Lavenia. She is the beloved mother of Matthew (Mike) Lavenia of Glens Falls, Joanne Longtin of Colonie and the late James J. Lavenia. She is the mother-in-law of Terry Lavenia of Clifton Park. Mert spent many years working in the construction trade and had retired from New York State. He loved his family and was active in golf and darts. His passion was hunting as he found the woods his peaceful place. He loved his faithful dogs, PJ and Cloey. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Gail Pittman Oles. His memory will forever be cherished by his children, Jonathan and companion Erin, Kristen and companion Craig, Scott Oles and Sandra Oles. He was a loving grampy to Abigail Oles. He was a tender and loving caregiver for his mother-in-law, Mildred Shove. In earlier years, he was a pitcher for the Alcove AC's baseball team, was one of the original little league managers in 1950, enjoyed bowling and all sports. Gerald was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater as a tech sergeant. For 22 years, he worked for the former N.Y. Central Railroad as a machinist, ten years for Herbert Hamlin as an electrician and 22 years for Ravena Coeymans Selkirk School as a mechanic. He retired in 1983. Gerald was a 54-year member of the Bethlehem Lodge #85 and a member of the Congregational Christian Church in Ravena. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Hazel R. Richardson; daughter, Betty Jane Millett LaPlante of Ravena; son, William and daughter-in-law, Sandra Richardson of Fla.; sisters, Selma LaBuda of Climax, Dorothy Ventura of Selkirk and Alice Smith of Delmar; grandsons, Stephen and Jonathan Millett; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A homemaker, Mrs. Russo worked at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady during World War II, later assisted in the family business, the former Russo Bros. Canada Dry Bottling Co. of Mechanicville. Helene enjoyed bowling in the WIBC bowling league in Mechanicville for a number of years and was a member of the Assumption-St. Paul Church in Mechanicville. She was predeceased by her sister, Rose Soloski and brothers, Alex and Stanley Zygmon. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Peter A. Russo; her two sons and their wives, Peter and Patricia Russo of Canton, Mich. and Richard and Michele Russo of Clifton Park; and her four cherished grandchildren, Rebecca (Carl) DeCesare, Mark, Christina and Kimberly Russo, along with in-laws and nieces and nephews. Stepnowski, 84, formerly of McClellan Street, died Friday afternoon, August 27, 2004 at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home following a long illness. Frank was born in Schenectady on November 18, 1919 and graduated from Schenectady schools. After graduating, Frank worked for General Electric for several years. During World War II, Frank entered the United States Army, serving in the 101st Air Borne squadron in Europe where he jumped behind enemy lines and received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. After the war, he returned to GE where he was employed as a welder until retiring in 1985 after 43 years of service. Frank was a communicant of St. Helen's Church and was an usher for many years. He was an avid bowler and was a member of several bowling leagues. In January of 1949, Frank was united in marriage to the late Louise Bologna Stepnowski until her death on March 2, 2001. Survivors include his beloved sister, Mrs. Catherine I. Bittner of Newburgh; the late Edward Stepnowski and Walter Stepnowski; also survived by two nieces, two nephews, five great nieces, a great-great-niece and nephew. Services will be held Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. from the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, Union at N. Jay Streets, Schenectady then to St. Helen's Church, Union Street where a Mass will be celebrated at 9. Interment will follow the Mass in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Rossi & Ditoro Funeral Home, Monday evening from 6 to 8. Vitagliano, 58, died peacefully Thursday, August 26, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Mr. Vitagliano was born in Glens Falls, N.Y., but lived most of his life in the Capital District. He was a graduate of LeMoyne College and received his master's degree from the Sage Graduate School. He was employed for many years by the New York State Department of Labor until his retirement in 2002. He enjoyed hiking and canoeing in the Adirondacks and also loved to golf but, most of all, he enjoyed visits to the Saratoga track. Mr. Vitagliano was the loving husband of the late Mary Ellen Vitagliano. He is survived by his father, John Vitagliano of Glens Falls, N.Y.; his daughters, Samantha A. Vitagliano and her husband, Charles Stafford of Victor, N.Y., Sara A. Cremins and her husband, David of Larchmont, N.Y. and Corey J. Crumley and her husband Scott of Audubon, N.J.; his grandchildren, Bennett C. Stafford and Lauren E. Crumley; and by several aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his mother, Kathleen Giorgianni Vitagliano. Arrangements provided by Hans Funeral Home, 1088 Western Ave., Albany. At Michael's request, there will be no services.
