At RPI, he was elected to the Sigma Xi honor society and, in his senior thesis, proposed a form of FM radio (which led to an offer to study at Columbia with Armstrong, who invented the form of FM now used). Last year, an RPI student asked permission to quote that thesis. Mr. Knapp also lettered in four sports (football, heavyweight boxing, swimming and shot put), served as class officer all four years, president of the student body and president of Sigma Chi Fraternity. In 1936, Mr. Knapp joined GE and worked there for 42 years as a professional engineer, serving most recently as department head for industry sales and engineering operations. He participated in the engineering technical program and was one of four young engineers at GE whom the Defense Department exempted from military service in World War II to improve weapons design. Mr. Knapp developed new tank firing mechanisms that reduced US casualties and battery modifications that enabled tanks to start reliably in winter. Active for decades in the community, particularly in education, Mr. Knapp often headed the PTA in Schenectady schools. He served on the Schenectady School Board and led early efforts to establish and secure funding for Schenectady (then Linton) High School. He was a longstanding supporter of RPI and he and Mrs. Knapp were RPI Patroons. He served as class president and reunion chair for the 50th reunion and received several alumni awards including the Albert Fox Demers Medal. For many years, Mr. Knapp also supported Ellis Hospital, served on the board of and supported the Schenectady County Community College and was active in the United Way Campaign.
