Louise was a native of Philadelphia, Pa., a graduate of West Philadelphia High School and the George Washington University. Louise Ellen Simons and Ralph Asher Alpher were married on January 28, 1942 in the District of Columbia. They moved to the Capital District with their children in 1955 when Ralph, a physicist and cosmologist, joined the General Electric Research and Development Center. Louise was employed with several government agencies prior to the birth of her first child in 1950. In the Capital District, she taught seamstress arts for Singer Sewing Co. She was also a community volunteer with the YWCA, NY Cooperative Extension, WMHT and Girl Scouts. She was an avid horticulturist and antiquarian. She is survived by her husband, Ralph; son, Victor Seth Alpher of Austin, Texas; daughter, Harriet Rose (Alpher) Lebetkin of Danbury, Conn.; grandchildren, Rachel Lebetkin of Danbury, Lisa Lebetkin of Boston, Mass. Born in Albany, he attended Albany Schools and was on the All Albany Basketball Team while at CBA. Orrin was the son of the late J. Harry and Mary McBride Barr. He was an Army Veteran of World War II having served in the European Theatre. He lived in Delmar since 1960 and worked for the New York Telephone Company for 42 years retiring as a claims agent in 1978. Mr. Barr was a life member of the New York Telephone Company Pioneers, a life member and past commander of the Ft. Orange Post # 30 American Legion, and a member of the Normanside Country Club where he served on the Board of Governors. Mr. Barr was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. He was active in local politics for many years and was a member of the Bethlehem Republican Club. He was also a member of the Bethlehem Board of Appeals for 17 years retiring from that position in 1992. Husband of M. Gloria Depew Barr; father of Orrin J. NIVERVILLE Marion E. Berntson, 73, of Knollwood Drive, Niverville, N.Y. died Monday, July 5, 2004 at Barnwell Health Facilities in Valatie after a five-year battle with ovarian cancer. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., January 24, 1931, she was the daughter of the late G. Al and Marion (Green) Finke. She was a supervisory park ranger for the National Park Service at Lindenwald for 16 years, retiring in 2000, and a summer resident of Diamond Point on Lake George for over 50 years. Marion was a docents of the Columbia County Historical Society and a member of Friends of Lindenwald, the Kinderhook Garden Club, queen mother of the Local Red Hat Society, Caring Together, an ovarian cancer support group, the Scandinavian Forum, a longtime curator of the DAR museum in Hudson, the Ghent Playhouse and St. Luke's Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband, Dana Berntson; two sons, Rex M. Berntsson and his wife, Mary Kay Millier, of Dryden, N.Y. and Neal R. Berntson of Albany, N.Y.; one daughter, Karla B. Dulic and her husband, Charles, of East Lansing, Mich.; a brother, G. Act 3 THE FINALE David Frank Blostein entered into God's loving arms on Monday July 5, 2004. He was surrounded by love from his family. David was born August 13, 1946 in Sayre, Pa. He was son of the late Harry and Helen Case Blostein. He was employed for 27 years by the General Electric Co. having worked at Knoll Atomic Power Labs, Research & Development Center, Quick Rental and Silicones. He retired in 2001. A veteran of the US Navy, Dave also served with the US Air National Guard. He was a member and past Master of Clinton Lodge #140 F&AM in Waterford, a former Scout Master of Boy Scout Pack 632 in Waterford and a former soccer coach with the Waterford Youth Council Soccer League. He was born in Schenectady and was the son of the late Dominick John and Matilda Komorny Catalfamo. Mr. Catalfamo was employed as a civil engineer for the N.Y.S. Department of Transportation, design service bureau, for over 20 years. He was a highly experienced highway designer. Dom was valued by his co-workers for his wit, technical expertise and wise counsel. He was a member of the N.Y.S. Association of Transportation Engineers. Dom was a member of the Highway Engineering bowling league for many years and a member of the Colonie Democratic Committee since 2000. He was a loving, dedicated father and grandfather who was very close to all of his children and his brother and sisters. Dom was well known for his affable demeanor and would liven up any room he walked into with his sparkling eyes, boyish grin and delightful sense of humor. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and loved cars and bowling. Like his father before him, Dom was a skilled craftsman and performed many projects around his home, as well as helping his brother, Lee with remodeling projects at his home as well. He will be greatly missed. Dom is the beloved father of Dominick John (DJ) Catalfamo and his wife Gretchen,Maria Catalfamo and Vincent Catalfamo. He is the devoted grandfather of Dominick James Catalfamo II. The light of his life for the past few years is his loving girlfriend and soul mate, Carolyn McMahon. DiMeo, 88, of Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, and formerly of Manhattan Street in Schenectady, passed away early Monday morning July 5, 2004 at the home. Irene was born in Schenectady on August 11, 1915, a daughter of the late John and Apolonia Ruska Uszakiewicz. She was educated in Schenectady Schools and was a 1933 graduate of Nott Terrace High School. For many years Irene was a waitress for the former Ritz Restaurant on Van Vranken Avenue, and a lifelong devoted homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church, where she was a member of the ladies Sacred Heart League and an annual Festa worker. Irene was also a member of the Northside Senior Citizens, the Annie Schaffer Senior Citizens Center, and the Sons of Italy. Wife of the late Anthony DiMeo, whom she married on New Years Day of 1937 and he died in September of 1975. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Page of Duanesburg. Grandmother of John C. Durett, 71, formerly of Halfmoon died Monday July 5, 2004 at Star Farms Nursing Home in Burlington from complications of a stroke. Born in Morrisville Vt. he was son of the late Wayne and Hortence Shackett Durett. He resided in East Greenbush briefly and later Halfmoon, where he raised his family, before moving to Burlington. He was employed as an examiner by the New York State Insurance Fund in Albany and retired in 1988. He then worked as an independent consultant in the Albany area. He was a veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean War. Mr. Durett was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, and an occasional bad game of golf. He was an accomplished chef who enjoyed cooking for his friends and family. He is survived by his daughter Catherine M. Carey and her husband Scott of Colonie and a son Scott Durett of Colorado, his former wife Rosemary Dellea Durett of Waterford, his grandchildren Laura Carey and Brian Durett as well as his brother Jack Durett of Burlington. Born on July 4, 1915 in Brooklyn. She was the daughter of the late Cantor Gedalia and Libbe Rivka Moskowitz of Brooklyn New York. Mrs. Flax moved to Stuyvesant Town in New York City with her late husband, Solomon in 1948. Survived by sister, Shirley Mangel of Cherry Hill, N.J.; sister Esther Fuss of Monroe Township, N.J.; son, Cantor Elihu (Beverlee) Flax of Norfolk, Va.; son Daniel (Judith) Flax of Albany, N.Y.; grandchildren Shoshana and Leora Flax of Albany; and Solomon and Arielle Flax of Norfolk, Va., and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband, Solomon Flax and her brothers Harry, David, Irving, Julius, and Cantor Louis Moss; and sister Beatrice Solodkin. Founding member of Temple Tifereth Israel-Town and Village Synagogue of New York City, Mrs. Flax was a former president of its Sisterhood. She was a member of the synagogue's Bikur Cholim Committee and attended daily morning minyan until she broke her hip in 2000. For many years, she led High Holiday children's services for the synagogue. She could frequently be found behind the scenes, helping out at synagogue events. Her life revolved around helping family, friends and synagogue. Mrs. Flax was extremely generous to numerous charities. Neither an advanced case of macular degeneration nor reduced physical ability stopped her from performing acts of loving-kindness or from attending synagogue. Mrs. Flax graduated from Teacher's College of the Jewish Theological Seminary and taught Hebrew School for many years. She served as executive secretary at CEJWIN Camps for more than three decades. Mrs. Gallager was born in Walton, N.Y., but lived all her adult life in the Capital District. She was employed for a time by the New York Telephone Company in Albany. Mrs. Gallager is survived by her husband Harold T. Gallager; her daughter Shawn Gallager of Colonie; her sister Marjorie McLean of Sarasota, Fla., and by four grandchildren. She was born to Peter and Ursula Bieksa in Lynn, Mass. on September 10, 1920. She was the widow of Navy Pilot Lt. Cmdr Joe A. Guice. She leaves her son, Joe A. Guice of Altamont, her grandchildren, Joseph V. Guice, Elizabeth A. Guice and her great-grandson Joseph V. Guice Jr. She will be long remembered for her compassion and generosity by all those who knew her. Her family and friends will miss her cheerful warmth and concern for their well being. Hems, Albert F. RENSSELAER Albert F. Hems, 83, died peacefully on July 6, 2004 at Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Samuel Hems and Ida (Bott) Hems and husband of 58 years of Margaret Rogers Hems. He was a graduate of Troy High School, Albany Business College and the graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. In 1941, he enlisted in the military and was discharged as a major in the Air Force. Mr. Hems had a 42 year career in banking, beginning with the National City Bank of Troy, and following multiple mergers, retired from Fleet Bank in 1982. He also was a president of the Albany Institute of Banking and taught several courses. Mr. Hems gave many hours of community service. He was a Boy Scout in Center Brunswick and a member of the Uncle Sam Council. He was a board member of Troy Pee Wee hockey and enjoyed his time on the RPI rink as a referee. The American Red Cross was another of his favorite organizations, and he served as Chairman of the Rensselaer County Chapter. He taught blood pressure courses and worked in blood pressure clinics in many senior centers. He also served on the board of the Blood Bank in Albany. Following retirement, he became an active volunteer at Samaritan Hospital, working first in the emergency room for seven years and then in the pharmacy until recently. He accumulated over 18,000 hours of service. He was a member of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church, and served as a teacher, youth fellowship leader and trustee. He was also a member of the Brunswick Lodge of Elks and was named Man of the Year in 1982. Mr. Hems enjoyed his vegetable and flower garden and was well known for sharing his beautiful gladiolas and fresh vegetables with friends and neighbors. Kellam, Sally ALBANY Sally Kellam, 78, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital following a valiant ten-year battle with leukemia. Born July 15, 1926 in Binghamton, New York, the only child of Edwin and Lucie Tierney. University of Arizona, class of '44. At the age of 45, Sally returned to college, receiving a Masters of Political Science at SUNY Binghamton. Later, she received a Master of Science in Criminal Justice at SUNY Albany. Worked at Mt. McGregor and Hudson Correctional Facility, where she retired as a Sr. counselor in 1995. Lived on lower Myrtle in Albany's south end for many years, making many friends and adding to the diversity of the unique neighborhood. Sally loved politics on all levels, and served as a delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention, as well as attending many local roundtable discussions about Albany, her adopted city. She volunteered often for WAMC radio. Sally spent her retirement traveling the world. She was a devoted grandmother who carved a special spot in her grandchildren's lives. Romano, 78, of Crosley Drive West, formerly of Center Brunswick, passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2004. Born in Watervliet, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lucy Romano and husband of Kathleen Kelly Romano. At two years of age, the family moved to Ossining, N.Y. where Wallace attended St. Augustines School and was a graduate of Ossining High. Wallace enlisted in the Navy in 1942. He became a gunman aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence and was shipped out to the Pacific. Wallace was in light major battles and, while on the Independence, it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Wallace received the Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific Campaigns Medal, Victory Medal American Campaign, Good Conduct World War II Victory Navy Presidential Unit Citation and Navy Unit Commendation. Wallace was also assigned to the USS Guam which saw action throughout the Pacific. He was also assigned to the 7th Fleet and saw action in the China Sea and Korea. Wallace had retired a number of years ago from the Brittonkill School District where he had been the supervisor of transportation for a number of years and then had been a courier with Rifenburgh Construction. He and his wife had moved to Fla. in 2002. Sorenson, Kaye H. ALBANY Kaye H. Sorenson, 95, died Saturday, July 3, 2004 at the Teresian House. Born in Frederiksvaerk, Denmark, he was the son of the late Lauritz and Olga Christensen Sorenson. Mr. Sorenson arrived in the United States through Ellis Island when he was 14 years old and eventually settled in Albany, where he attended Albany Public Schools. He worked as a chauffer and as a waiter at the former Ten Eyck Hotel and Keeler's. Mr. Sorenson was a Navy veteran of World War II. In 1940, Mr. Sorenson became a member of the Albany Police Force and was assigned to the old 5th Precinct on Central Avenue and later assigned to the 4th Precinct at Madison Avenue and Lark Street. In May of 1948, he became a detective, promoted to Sergeant in 1956, Lieutenant in 1958 and Captain in 1969. He retired from the Police Dept. in 1978. After retiring from the police force, he worked as an investigator for the public defender's office for 12 years. Captain Sorenson was a Free Mason since 1974 and received the Dedication Award in 1991. He was a member of the Ancient Temple Lodge #14, Cyprus Shrine, the Royal Order of Jesters and other Masonic bodies. He was a past president of Lodge #190 H.C. Orsted, of the Danish Brotherhood in America, where he had been a member for over 25 years. He was also a member of the Retired Men's Fraternity, the Grump Club, the American Legion Ambrose Scully Post #1019, AARP Fort Orange Group and for over 40 years the Albany Elks BPOE #49. Husband of the late Elizabeth Fyvie Sorenson, who died in 1935 and Mildred Bellville Sorenson, who died in 1973. She would have been 99 years old on July 19. Born in Whitehall, daughter of the late John and Bridgett Umphrey Gully, she and family moved to Saratoga when she was a child and eventually settled in Mechanicville in her teenage years. Edna attended Mechanicville public schools and worked for New York Telephone Company as an operator and also worked as a seamstress for the Korell Dress Co. after her children were grown. She was an accomplished dressmaker, creating her daughters' clothes and their prom and graduation dresses and wedding gowns. She loved music and played the piano and the violin. She was a devout Catholic and a member of Assumption-St. Paul Church. She had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother and the Rosary and was a 52-year member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Edna was also active with the Senior Citizens, Mid-Rise Tenants Association, the Teddy Bear Ladies and the Doll Ladies. Edna was the widow of John Jack Sykes, who died July 7, 1981, whom she married September 3, 1930. She was also predeceased by a sister, Ellen Fisher, and brothers, Bernard, John and Edward Gully. Born in St. Regis Falls, N.Y., he was the son of the late Clarence J. Ward and Bernice DeLaire. He was raised and educated in St. Regis Falls and attended State University of New York. He was a US Marine Corps veteran following which he entered a long career in law enforcement, first with the Malone Police Department and then joined the New York State Police as a trooper in 1962 and continued a distinguished career including his last assignment as the station commander of SP Malone, after which he retired in 1985. During his career, he was awarded commendations for meritorious service and awarded the Brummer Award by the superintendent of state police for bravery. He was a member of the American Legion Post #219 in Malone and a lifetime member of Malone Lodge, BPOE #1302 and a member of the Association of Retired NYS Troopers. Tom enjoyed his residence in Fla., golfing and his trips back to the Malone area to visit family, friends and colleagues. Survivors include his devoted wife, Jane A. Heintz; a son, Thomas J. She was raised and educated in Holbrook, Mass., near Boston, and came to Troy, following her marriage, where she had resided for the majority of her life. She lived for and loved her family and they were the focus of her life. Mrs. Zorian was a member of St. Peter Armenian Apostolic Church in Watervliet. She was the beloved wife of the late Gregory Zorian, Sr. who died in 1980. She is the loving mother of Gregory T. Zorian, Jr. and his wife Antoinette of Colonie and Mary Elizabeth Zorian of Watervliet; cherished grandmother of Nicole Zorian of Albany and Gregory T. Zorian, III and his wife Kathy of Colonie; adoring great-grandmother of Annabel Marie Zorian; dear sister of Mary Raiche and her husband Leon E. of Plymouth, Mass. and the late John and Charlie Garabedian; loving aunt of Paul Raiche and his wife Sharyn of Hanson, Mass. and their daughters Sophie and Katherine. Funeral services will be held privately and there are no public calling hours.
