Vadney LATHAM Donna A. Vadney Anderson, 51, of Hunter's Run, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a courageous fight against cancer. She was born in Albany on March 5, 1953, the beloved daughter of Elwood and Mary C. Wirasnik Vadney of Glenmont. She was raised in Feura Bush and was a 1971 graduate of Ravena High School. She later attended Vermont College in Montpelier, Vt. where she studied medical secretary science. She was employed by the New York State Senate in Albany as an administrative assistant for the past 26 years. Donna was a devoted wife and mother who continued to amaze medical professionals with her activities during her illness. She most wanted and continued to be the best wife and mom, supporting her husband and daughters till the final days of her illness. Dignity, integrity and character mattered most to Donna, and she exemplified those attributes and persevered to instill those qualities in her daughters. She enjoyed watching her daughters participate in field hockey and softball. She traveled to Europe with her daughter's field hockey team and traveled to Fla., Canada and throughout numerous states with her daughter's softball team. What mattered most to Donna though was that her daughters conduct themselves with good character, never taking the expedient road to success, but doing things the right way. She was the selfless backbone and inner strength of the family who never complained during her illness, instead preferring to remain in the background. In addition to her parents, survivors include her beloved husband, David J. Anderson; two cherished daughters, Rachel M. Anderson and Jill A. Anderson, both of Latham; and her loving brother, Glenn S. Vadney of Delmar. She was the sister-in-law of Dolores and Michael Mitchell of Latham, James Anderson of Watervliet and Barbara and Robert Stewart of Lindenhurst, N.Y. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins. The funeral will be Saturday morning at 9:15 from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Mary Church, 15th St. & 6th Ave., Watervliet where a Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated by Rev. Thomas M. (Petteys) Briggs, 96, a longtime resident, died peacefully at her State Street home with the support of all her loving family, Tuesday evening, July 6, 2004 following a short illness. Born in Greenwich, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Nettie M. (Case) Petteys and the wife for over 56 years of Raymond H. Briggs who died in December of 1982. Helen and Raymond were married December 31, 1926. Mrs Briggs was a graduate of Greenwich High School and a homemaker for many years. During the 66 years she resided in Valley Falls, Mrs. Briggs was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the centralization of the Hoosic Valley School District. She, along with several others, was a founder of the Hoosic Valley P.T.A. Mrs Briggs was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church and a member of many local social clubs and charitable organizations. In her quiet time she enjoyed hobbies of gardening, sewing and cooking. Her survivors include three daughters, Helene Briggs of San Francisco, Lorraine (William) Agan and Beverly Moore all of Valley Falls; two sons, Walden Briggs of Raymertown, and Wayne (Carol) Briggs of Crystal Lake, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Lorraine Briggs of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother, Gordon K. Petteys of Greenwich; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Briggs was predeceased by a son, the late Ramon Briggs. Burkart, Ernest D. EAST GREENBUSH Ernest D. Burkart, age 84, of Justine Court, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. He was born in Albany and was a lifelong resident of the Capital District and wintered in Vero Beach, Fla. He was a graduate of Vincentian Institute in Albany, Class of 1937, and a US Navy veteran of World War II where he received the American Theatre Medal and Victory Medal. Mr. Burkart was founder and past president of D & B Acoustical Corp. of Schodack. He was an honorary life member of Albany Council #173 K of C and was an avid golfer, having a hole-in-one, and was president of the Vero Beach Golf League. He was past president of the Burden Lake Improvement Association and a member of the Northeastern Subcontractors Association. Mr. Burkart was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church in North Greenbush. He enjoyed traveling and especially his artwork painting. Catalfamo, Dominick James COLONIE Dominick James Catalfamo, 50, of Colonie, died Friday, July 2, 2004. He was born in Schenectady and was the son of the late Dominick John and Matilda Komorny Catalfamo. Mr. Catalfamo was employed as a civil engineer for the N.Y.S. Department of Transportation, design service bureau, for over 20 years. He was a highly experienced highway designer. Dom was valued by his co-workers for his wit, technical expertise and wise counsel. He was a member of the N.Y.S. Association of Transportation Engineers. Dom was a member of the Highway Engineering bowling league for many years and a member of the Colonie Democratic Committee since 2000. He was a loving, dedicated father and grandfather who was very close to all of his children and his brother and sisters. Dom was well known for his affable demeanor and would liven up any room he walked into with his sparkling eyes, boyish grin and delightful sense of humor. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and loved cars and bowling. Like his father before him, Dom was a skilled craftsman and performed many projects around his home, as well as helping his brother, Lee with remodeling projects at his home as well. He will be greatly missed. Dom is the beloved father of Dominick John (DJ) Catalfamo and his wife Gretchen,Maria Catalfamo and Vincent Catalfamo. He is the devoted grandfather of Dominick James Catalfamo II. The light of his life for the past few years is his loving girlfriend and soul mate, Carolyn McMahon. He is the cherished brother of LeRoy (Lee) Catalfamo and his wife, Christine, Carol P. Marcella and Sheryl Leland and her husband, Richard. Distin, 79, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital. Robert was born in New York City and has lived in Ravena since 1943. He was the son of the late Floyd and Dora Brandt Distin. In 1985, Robert retired from Conrail in Selkirk after 42 years of service. He was a life member of the Ravena Hose Co. Survivors include his wife, Alice J. Durett, 71, formerly of Halfmoon died Monday July 5, 2004 at Star Farms Nursing Home in Burlington from complications of a stroke. Born in Morrisville Vt. he was son of the late Wayne and Hortence Shackett Durett. He resided in East Greenbush briefly and later Halfmoon, where he raised his family, before moving to Burlington. He was employed as an examiner by the New York State Insurance Fund in Albany and retired in 1988. He then worked as an independent consultant in the Albany area. He was a veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean War. Mr. Durett was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, and an occasional bad game of golf. He was an accomplished chef who enjoyed cooking for his friends and family. He is survived by his daughter Catherine M. Carey and her husband Scott of Colonie and a son Scott Durett of Colorado, his former wife Rosemary Dellea Durett of Waterford, his grandchildren Laura Carey and Brian Durett as well as his brother Jack Durett of Burlington. Psalms 37:23 On July 4, 2004 at 9:15 p.m., the angel of the Lord visited the Rev. John Jack Johnson (Bro. Jack) and took him home to be with the Lord. Elder Johnson was born to the late Sam and Mary Johnson in Shubuta, Miss. on August 17, 1909. During his childhood in Miss., Bro. Jack attended the Shubuta Public School System. December 14, 1931, this Man of the People moved to Albany, N.Y. where he met and married Dorothy M. Charles. To this union, seven children were born, five boys and two girls. From 1932 to 1990, he transported over 100 families from Shubuta, Miss. to Albany, N.Y. He became known as the Modern Day Harriet Tubman. In 1952, Elder Johnson founded St. John's COGIC at 7 Dungan Ave. in Albany, N.Y. Kellam, Sally ALBANY Sally Kellam, 78, died Friday, July 2, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital following a valiant ten-year battle with leukemia. Born July 15, 1926 in Binghamton, New York, the only child of Edwin and Lucie Tierney. University of Arizona, class of '44. At the age of 45, Sally returned to college, receiving a Masters of Political Science at SUNY Binghamton. Later, she received a Master of Science in Criminal Justice at SUNY Albany. Worked at Mt. McGregor and Hudson Correctional Facility, where she retired as a Sr. counselor in 1995. Lived on lower Myrtle in Albany's south end for many years, making many friends and adding to the diversity of the unique neighborhood. Sally loved politics on all levels, and served as a delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention, as well as attending many local roundtable discussions about Albany, her adopted city. She volunteered often for WAMC radio. Sally spent her retirement traveling the world. She was a devoted grandmother who carved a special spot in her grandchildren's lives. She was a wonderful mother-in-law and a terrific friend. Survived in Park City, Utah by son Reid Kellam; daughter-in-law Cindie, and grandchildren Tierney, Taylor, and Connor. Born in Germany, Betty was a longtime Albany resident where she and her husband, the late Jacob Kiegle, owned and operated the Clinton Bakery for 25 years. Betty was the mother of Jacob F. Born on November 13, 1923 in Queens, N.Y., she was the daughter of Walter and Sussana (Spiegel) Mettais. Having been raised in Queens, she moved to Albany to attend nursing school at Russell Sage College and worked at Albany Medical Center Hospital as a registered nurse. In 1949, Rita married Joseph Laraia. They lived in the Albany area until 1960 when they moved to northern Va. She retired to Lake George in 1998. Rita was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers fan and attended all their home games in 1941. She was also a life long rollercoaster enthusiast. She was active in the schools her children attended and was an active community volunteer while in Va. Locally, she was a member of the Glens Falls Hospital Guild, the American Legion Post #0374 Auxiliary and a local garden club in Lake George. Rita was predeceased by her parents, and her sister, Bernadette Barnett. Logrippo, Domenico ALBANY Domenico Logrippo, 51, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center. Born in Muro Lucano, Italy, son of the late Angelo and Geraldine Logrippo, he settled in Albany over 30 years ago. Mr. Logrippo worked as a brick layer for Local #2 and was also a communicant of St. James Church. Born in Boston, Mass., he later moved to New Hampshire. Mr. Matisoff enjoyed a long career as manager of inventory and sales for Hampshire Designer Mills in Manchester, N.H. Later moving to the Albany area, he resided at the Beltrone Living Center and, most recently, the Massry residence. An accomplished artist in water color painting and sculpture, he received numerous awards for his work. His talents were displayed at Temple Gates of Heaven in Schenectady and are currently on display at the Massry Residence in Albany. He was a member of the League of Arts in New Hampshire. Mr. Matisoff enjoyed the game of baseball and played with the Industrial Baseball League. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Minna Weiner Matisoff; his children, Judith (Eric) Block of Niskayuna and Robert (Nancy) Matisoff of McLean, Va. Shaver, Madeline Rose SCOTIA Madeline Rose Shaver, 88, of Red Coach Dr., died at home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, July 6, 2004. Madeline was born in Paterson, N.J., the daughter of the late George and Rose Stockin. Her childhood was spent in Meridale, N.Y. Madeline graduated from Treadwell High School. In 1935, she married Ralph A. Shaver and they lived on the Shaver family farm until they moved to Oneonta in 1943. Madeline worked as a manager for the Bresees Department Store in Oneonta from 1948 until her retirement in 1982 at which time she moved to Scotia. Madeline was predeceased in 1977 by her husband, Ralph. Madeline is survived by her daughter, Virginia Shaver of Scotia; her grandchildren, David R. Shaver, his wife Rosemary and their children, Brendon, Brittni, Ashleigh and Gabrielle, all of Delmar, and Lisa S. Radley, her husband William and their children, Jack and Samuel of Clifton Park. A resident of Albany and Clifton Park since 2001, he was an economist with the N.Y. State Assembly Ways and Means Committee since January 2001. Born in Frederiksvaerk, Denmark, he was the son of the late Lauritz and Olga Christensen Sorenson. Mr. Sorenson arrived in the United States through Ellis Island when he was 14 years old and eventually settled in Albany, where he attended Albany Public Schools. He worked as a chauffer and as a waiter at the former Ten Eyck Hotel and Keeler's. Mr. Sorenson was a Navy veteran of World War II. In 1940, Mr. Sorenson became a member of the Albany Police Force and was assigned to the old 5th Precinct on Central Avenue and later assigned to the 4th Precinct at Madison Avenue and Lark Street. In May of 1948, he became a detective, promoted to Sergeant in 1956, Lieutenant in 1958 and Captain in 1969. He retired from the Police Dept. in 1978. After retiring from the police force, he worked as an investigator for the public defender's office for 12 years. Captain Sorenson was a Free Mason since 1974 and received the Dedication Award in 1991. He was a member of the Ancient Temple Lodge #14, Cyprus Shrine, the Royal Order of Jesters and other Masonic bodies. He was a past president of Lodge #190 H.C. Orsted, of the Danish Brotherhood in America, where he had been a member for over 25 years. He was also a member of the Retired Men's Fraternity, the Grump Club, the American Legion Ambrose Scully Post #1019, AARP Fort Orange Group and for over 40 years the Albany Elks BPOE #49. Husband of the late Elizabeth Fyvie Sorenson, who died in 1935 and Mildred Bellville Sorenson, who died in 1973. Father of Elizabeth Bette Richardson of Burlington, Vt. and Geraldine Haley of Hollis, N.H. and the late Kaye W. Born in Iphofen, Germany, she was the daughter of Conrad Weiss and the late Josephine Nirsberger Weiss and wife of Walter Zelenke and former wife of the late Edward L. Danahy. Anneliese graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy and St. Rose College in Albany where she received two master's degrees, one in history and the other in education. She was a school teacher for the East Greenbush School District for 28 years. After her retirement, she was a substitute teacher in various schools, both in Tucson and this area as well. In addition to her husband and father, Anneliese is also survived by her children, Edward C. Danahy of North Greenbush, Anneliese (Liesa) Robinson and her husband Alan of Poestenkill and Sheila Danahy of North Greenbush.
