It is said that a person's true character shines through during times of adversity. Over the past ten years, those close to Lyn Burling witnessed her courage, determination, and strength as she fought against cancer. Mrs. Burling was born in Claremont, Australia on July 10, 1943. After the war, her family settled in Lincoln, Neb. While attending the University of Nebraska, she met Charles Burling of Kenesaw, Neb. They were married on November 20, 1965. The Burlings moved to Pequannock, N.J. in 1975. There Mrs. Burling worked as an office manager at a medical practice and in the accounting department of a plastics manufacturer. After moving to Gansevoort, N.Y. in 1991, she worked as an underwriting service assistant at State Farm Insurance. Wherever she worked, Mrs. Burling's friends and associates knew her as a person who was always ready to give of herself to help others. Mrs. Burling was a member of the Pompton Valley Presbyterian Church in Pompton Plains, N.J. and the Presbyterian New England Congregational Church in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. An excellent quilter, she also enjoyed traveling, making creative gifts for others, and gardening. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Burling is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Todd Fought of Bridgewater, N.J.; son, John Burling of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; brother, Scott Frederick of Charleston, S.C.; sisters, Joan Sauerwein of Mt. Conway, Raymond W. NORTH GREENBUSH Raymond William Conway, 72, died July 16, 2004 at his home. Born in Troy, he was a longtime resident of the Town of North Greenbush. He was educated in Troy, a 1950 graduate of LaSalle Institute and of St. Bernardine of Siena College in Loudonville, receiving his degree in 1961 after returning from military service. As a commissioned officer, he served in the U.S. Army Artillery in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was employed for a number of years at the Watervliet Arsenal and subsequently for the New York State Division of Budget, Workers Compensation Board and the New York State Comptrollers Office where he retired from in 1992 after 25 years of service. He was an active member of St. Michael the Archangel Church and a member of the church men's club and finance committee, was co-chair of the renovation and expansion committee and was a past trustee. He was also a longtime member of V.F.W. Post #1019. Ray was predeceased by his childhood sweetheart and beloved wife of 42 years, Margaret Peggy T. Griffa, who was also of Troy. Survivors include his son, Timothy R. Conway of Brunswick, N.Y.; four daughters, Mrs. Susan Gibbs of Lexington, S.C., Mrs. Colleen M. Baker of Burnt Hills, N.Y., Mrs. Michele Auricchio of Perth, N.Y. and Ms. Peggy Ann Conway of Guilderland, N.Y.; a brother, Dr. Walter D. Conway of Williamsville, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Joyce A. Jordan of Oak Hill, N.Y.; eight loving grandchildren, Christie Lynn Gibbs, Michael, Kaitlyn, Leah and Sean Baker, Christopher Conway and Maureen and Kelly Auricchio. Coyle Jr., 77, died peacefully Saturday, July 17, 2004 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late William J. and Mary McCann Coyle, Sr. Mr. Coyle was a graduate of the former St. John's School. He was an Army veteran of World War II having served with the Blue Devils 88th Infantry Division and obtained the rank of sergeant. Mr. Coyle served in occupied Italy with the 339th Field Artillery Unit. He was an assistant personnel director with the former Albany Casting Company and the former Adirondack Steel. He later worked for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Mr. Coyle was a communicant of St. James Church for over 42 years and recently of Holy Cross Church. He served as secretary of the Whitehall Little League for five years and was a member of the Watervliet Elks #1500. Mr. Coyle was an avid NY Yankee and NY Giants fan and was happiest when spending time with his family and grandchildren to whom he was devoted. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Anna M. Hargrave Coyle; daughter, Sharon A. Webber of Clarence, N.Y.; and son, Jeffrey M. (Rebecca) Coyle of Niskayuna; his grandchildren, Christopher W. and Timothy J. Webber and Brendan W. Coyle; his sister, Anna Mary Dacey of Nassau; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Catherine Sleeper and brothers, George and Albert Coyle. Dorenz, Arnold ALBANY Arnold Dorenz, age 87, of Forest Avenue in Albany, died Friday evening, July 16, 2004 at the Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center in Albany. Mr. Dorenz was born in Albany and resided here all his life. He attended Phillip Schuyler High School and the Albany High School. For more than 30 years, he had been the proprietor of the Display Arts Studio Inc. in Albany and was retired. He was a member of the Albany City Lodge #540 Knights of Pythias in Albany and had been active with their bowling league. He was also an avid card player and enjoyed dancing, having won many dance contests over the years. As a youngster, he played basketball for the Albany Jewish Community Center. He also enjoyed sports. He was honorably discharged from the Army and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Anita Gallup Dorenz; and his children, Benay Dorenz of Boca Raton, Fla., Diane Miller and her husband, Kevin of Menands, N.Y., Helayne (Hinda) Goliger and her husband, Joseph of Baltimore, Md. and Stuart Dorenz and his wife, Jacqueline of Latham, N.Y.; brother of Lillian Wolfson and Ada Wise, both of Albany. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews. Enzman, Sister Vincentia MENANDS Daughter of Charity, Sister Vincentia Enzman died Sunday July 18, 2004 at St. Louise House. Loretta Enzman, born in 1920 in Reading, Pa. to Mary Harter and Mark Enzman, grew up there with her three brothers and three sisters. On December 22, 1939, she entered the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg, Md. She was named Sister Vincentia after the co-founder of the Daughters of Charity, Vincent de Paul. Her first two missions from 1940 through 1953 were with children in homes; St. Vincent, Cambridge, Mass. and St. Vincent's, Drexel Hill, Pa. There she was both Angel (Care giver) and teacher. St Ann's Bridgeport, Conn. and St. Pius X, Greensboro, N.C., found her honing her skills as a teacher until 1957. At this time the Emmitsburg Province sent Sisters to establish services for the less fortunate in Bolivia, S.A. Sister Vincentia was among those chosen to go. Sister spent more than 45 years there and became proficient in the Spanish language and several dialects. She returned to the United States for a short time where she was a founding member of a service in Ogdensburg, N.Y. and later worked with the Hispanic population in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, N.Y. She then returned to Bolivia to continue her work among the indigent. Health issues brought her back to Albany in the spring of 2004. Sister is survived by her nephew, Honorable Thomas Twardowski and his wife, Ann; her nieces, Marianne Metz and Lucille Klein, all of Pennsylvania. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the DePaul Provincial House Chapel. MALTA Michael J. Ericsen, Sr., 46, of Plains Road, died suddenly Saturday, July 17, 2004 at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Troy on May 5, 1958, he was raised in Watervliet and lived in Cohoes before moving to Malta 1 1/2 years ago. He was educated in St. Brigid's School in Watervliet, Keveny Academy in Cohoes and Watervliet High School. He later attended Hudson Valley Community College in Troy where he studied automotive technology. He was a veteran of the US Army. He was employed by Carbonic Sales in Colonie as a service technician for 3 years and currently he was employed for Zimmer, New England in Albany as a sales technician for surgical implants. He enjoyed golf, horse racing and was a Baltimore Oriole baseball fan. He was a former member of the Watervliet Lodge of Elks #1500 where he was a member of the Dart League. He is the son of Anthony W. and Leona Romaine Ericsen of Menands; father of Michael J. Ericsen, Jr. of Waterford and Kassandra L. Ericsen of Malta; brother of William A. Ericsen of Melrose, David T. Ericsen of Schaghticoke and Toni F. Ericsen of Cohoes; Dear friend of Denise M. Brunelle of Saratoga Springs. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Gardiner, 87, years, of Norton Hill, N.Y. passed away at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Catskill, N.Y. on Monday, July 19, 2004. He was born in Greenville Center, N.Y. on August 17, 1916 son of the late Leonard and Helen (Story) Gardiner. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps being a B17 Pilot and discharged as a First Lt. He served with the 353 RD Bomb Squadron in the Mediterranean Theater, the Rhineland, PO Valley and the Northern Apennines. He received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and an Air Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters. Very active in the community, Len served the Town of Greenville as highway superintendent from 1948-1951, was also a town justice for 14 years. He was also a well regarded sawyer, lumberman and worked at GNH Lumber, Inc. and he also had a small insurance business and was very proud of his L.B.J. Plumbing and Electrical business located in Norton Hill. He was also a former school bus driver and a member of the Greenville American Legion Post # 291, The Tri-Town Memorial Post V.F.W. #7229, a life member of the Greenville Vol. Fire Co., a member of the Greenville-Norton Hill U.M.C., the Greene County Historical Society and the Greenville Historical Society, was a past member of the Greenville Rotary Club and the Knights of Pythias. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Clairbel (Ingalls) Gardiner; a sister, Viola Becker and his very special nephew James Adams. Surviving are his loving nieces, nephews and his many friends. COLONIE Albert E. Hoyt Jr., 83, died Saturday, July 17, 2004 at the Albany County Nursing Home after a long illness. A graduate of Lockport High School, Lockport, N.Y., Albert was a resident of the Capital Area for over 60 years. Albert served in the United States Army Field Artillery during World War II, touring Africa, Italy, Southern France and Germany. Albert recieved a Letter of Commendation for service at Anzio Beachhead on the Italian coast. Albert was a commercial tire salesman for 44 years. Albert retired in 1986 from Good Year Tire and Rubber Co. He had previously worked for B.F. Goodrich, and J.R. Sousa and Sons. Mr Hoyt was former Council Pres. of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Loudonville and council member in charge of finance, member of First Lutheran Church, Albany, member of the Louis W. Oppenheim V.F.W. Post 1019 and Past Post Commander, Past Commander of Albany City Council, Past Commander of V.F.W. District #3, Pres. and general chairman of 1960 New York State V.F.W. Convention and volunteer at Samuel S. Stratton V.A. Medical Center, Albany. Albert was a cherished husband, brother, father and son. His beloved wife, Leah Wilkins Hoyt of Colonie; devoted daughter, Linda Hoyt of New York City; and loving brothers, Donald C. Hoyt of Delmar and Douglas H. Hoyt of Schenectady, survive him. He was a World War II Army veteran, attaining the rank of sergeant. Harold received a Purple Heart, the Silver Star and the Medal of Honor. Olivia was born on April 16 2001 in Albany, N.Y. to James F. and Chevi Gifford Reittinger. Olivia greeted everyone with a great big Hi! Her favorite rhymes are Rosie, Patty-cake and Spider. Olivia is the cherished daughter of Chevi and Jim Reittinger, loving sister of Kate and Lilie; granddaughter of Clara Reittinger, Carole Praga and Bob Griffin, Jim and Joyce Gifford and Sal and Marylyn Praga and great-granddaughter of Patricia Aldi. She is also the niece of Gina Gifford, Angie and Chris Downey, Nick, Tony and Kathy Praga and Penny and Patrick Wilhide, Frank and Laura Reittinger and Debbie Reittinger and goddaughter of Patti Duff and Greg Woodward and namesake of Jayne Phillips. Also survived by many great aunts and uncles, a host of cousins, a very large circle of friends and four special therapists, Chaz Kelly, Colleen Abbate, Chris Roylance and Heidi Brunnell. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Road, Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.) then to St. Francis de Sales Church, Maria Dr., Albany at 10:00 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Wood Jr., Kenneth Wesley EARLTON Kenneth Wesley Wood Jr., died suddenly at his home on Friday, July 16, 2004 at the age of 62. Born in Catskill, N.Y., April 16, 1942, he lived his entire life in the Coxsackie/Earlton area and attended Coxsackie-Athens Central School. As a youth, Ken loved exploring and fishing in the Hudson River with his father or pals. Ken worked as a lineman for Runckle Utility, owned and operated Ye Olde Auto Shoppe at the bottom of Mansion Street Hill, then a foreman 30 years for Conrail (now CSX). He was anticipating retirement early next year. For someone, who jokingly said he didn't like to get too far out of Greene County, Kenny touched many peoples' lives during his lifetime. He was a teacher, mentor and father confessor of sorts to his many friends - always there to give of his time and talents. But mostly, he was the best friend anyone could ever want. Your untimely death has left a big hole in our lives and hearts, Kenny Wood. Kenny is survived by his sons, Heath Wesley Wood, Chris Alan Wood of Fla. and Craig J. Quintana (step-son) of Ravena; brother, Jeffrey Wood and family of Athens and cousins; four grandchildren, Heather Leigh Wood and Tyler Wesley Wood of Coeymans Hollow, Jasmine and Kira Quintana of Greenville and Coxsackie, respectively; former wife, Lillian Quintana Wood.
