TROY Anna H. Carroll, 82, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital. Born in Troy, she was the daughter of the late Henry W. Cunningham and Anna Meingossner Cunningham, and wife of the late William C. Carroll, who died in 1978. A lifelong resident of Troy, Anna worked in the maintenance department at the Rensselaer County Court House for 20 years, retiring in 1982. She was an active member of St. Bonaventure Church, Speigletown, and was a former member of its Ventura Club and choir. She enjoyed playing bingo. Survivors include her beloved children, Ruth A. Cancilla of Troy, Anna M. Post of Schaghticoke, Rose M. Kellogg of Waterford, William C. Carroll of Crown Point, N.Y., Helen M. Garry, Harry EAST BERNE - Harry Garry, 95, died peacefully at his home, Thursday, July 22, 2004. Born in Newark, New Jersey to the late Charles and Maria Garry, he moved to the Helderbergs as a young man when his family bought the farm in East Berne in the 1930's. Harry had many varied talents and interests and was always eager to learn more. Mr. Garry was active in Soil Conservation Programs. He was an original member of the Albany County Farm Bureau, serving as their president for 13 years, and also vice president of the NYS Farm Bureau from 1976 to 1978. In these capacities, Mr. Garry worked with governors and legislators for the good of state farming communities, including changes in the Federal Estate Taxes. He was one of the first farmers to grow certified Empire Birdsfoot Trefoil and he convinced Governor Dewey to push to have this legume planted on the sides of all state roads. Harry was well known as the Singing Farmer and in his earlier days took part in local regular radio and television programs, sharing his homespun philosophy and musical gifts. He was a prolific author and was widely recognized around the state for his articles and commentary. In later years he ran a farm seed and twine business. Harry deeply loved his community and strove to preserve and nurture it's unique and beautiful qualities. He was chairman of numerous committees with the East Berne Businessmen's Association, was instrumental in the continuation of the East Berne Post Office including the establishment of a rural postal route and helped to charter the East Berne Vol. Fire Co. He was responsible for helping to straighten Route # 443 in East Berne and assisted in getting East Berne included in the Capital District telephone system. He was the beloved husband of Dr. Margery Smith. Survivors also include his children; Charles Garry and his wife, Anina LaCour of East Berne, Franklyn Garry and his wife, Ragan Adams and their son, Samuel Garry of Fort Collins, Colorado, Johanna Halsey and her husband, Mark, and their sons, Justin and Trevor, of Red Hook, N.Y., Elizabeth Garry and her partner, Betsy von Mechow, their children, Bonnie and Jacob von Mechow, and Nathaniel Garry, all of South New Berlin, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, David Michael Garry and two brothers, George and Francis Garry. Born in a Model T Ford near Utica, N.Y. he was the son of the late Walter and Sarah Mead Irwin. He was raised in the Grand Gorge area. Bruce was a double letter athelete in basketball-baseball. He was a tool and die maker at GE. Bruce then received a degree in watchmaking from Western Pennslyvania Chronological Inst. He owned and operated Irwin Jewelers in Cohoes until 1967. Bruce then moved his family to central Florida and continued as a jeweler and watchmaker for a total on 50 years. He was an avid golfer and a lover of all animals. Bruce is predeceased by his loving wife of 32 years, Esther Brooks and survived by his second wife Jeannette Davis; his loving daughters, Sheila Irwin of Grafton, N.Y., Robin Irwin of Gotha, Fla., Tracy Irwin of Asheville, N.C. and Kelly Irwin of New York City; four grandchildren, Emily, Adam, Sarah, and Mohamed El Samahi of Gotha, Fla.; his brother, William of Roxbury, N.Y.; and sister, Viola Persall of Norwich, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; predeceased by brothers, Walter, George, Ray and sisters, Helen Raymond, May Wright. SAND LAKE Thomas J. Kilcullen, 79, of Stage Coach Road, died on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Troy, N.Y. on Valentine's Day, 1925, he was the son of the late George E. and Margaret Purcell Kilcullen. He was the loving husband of the former Elizabeth Dobert whom he married on May 12, 1951. Tom was raised in both Troy and Watervliet. He graduated from Watervliet High School and attended Siena College before joining the United States Marine Corps during World War II, serving in the Pacific. After his service to his country, he worked as a buyer and merchandiser for the former A & P Tea Co. and for 25 years at the Grand Union Co. He retired in 1988 and has been a resident of Sand Lake for the past 44 years. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Elizabeth; two children, Donna L. Kilcullen of Atlanta, Ga., Thomas J. Kilcullen and his wife Barbara of Waterford; two grandchildren, Matthew and Erin Kilcullen, both of Waterford; his siblings, Charles Kilcullen and Jean Toderov, both of Schenectady, Joan Kilcullen of Cohoes, Sally Warner of N.M.; along with many nieces and nephews. (Bill) LaBarge, 80, died Monday, July 12, 2004 at the Stuart Nursing and Restorative Care Nursing. He was born in Tupper Lake, N.Y. and lived in Albany before moving to Palm City 17 years ago. Mr. LaBarge was a veteran of World War II, honorably discharged with the rank of First Sgt. He was president and business manager of Local #106 of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Mr. LaBarge was past exalted ruler of Malone, N.Y. Lodge of Elks #1303. He was a great storyteller, an avid golfer and member of the Martin Downs Country Club. He graduated from Altamont High School in 1948. Don worked in various positions at General Electric Co. for 39 years, retiring in 1987. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Page was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus and a devoted communicant of St. Lucy's Church in Altamont. He was a member of the Guilderland Elks Lodge and the Boyd Hilton VFW Post #7062 in Altamont an an active volunteer with St. Lucy's Food Pantry. Rhinesmith, age 87, of Mellon Avenue, Troy died at home on July 22, 2004 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on November 28, 1916 in Suffern, N.Y., the son of the late Herbert and Mabel Kern Rhinesmith. Rev. Rhinesmith graduated from Dickinson College in 1938 and Drew Theological Seminary in 1941. He was ordained an Elder of the United Methodist Church the same year and was appointed to his first church in Newark, N.J. A Navy veteran of World War II, Reverend Rhinesmith served as a chaplain in Nev. where he ministered to Marines returning from combat duty in the Pacific. After the war, he served churches in Dumont and Westwood, N.J. before moving to Troy in 1961. While pastor of Memorial United Methodist Church, he oversaw construction of a new church building and in his retirement became the pastor emeritus of the church. In 1967, he became the superintendent of the Bennington-Troy District, serving in that capacity for six years. Upon completion of his term as superintendent, he was appointed to the Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Colonie where he was the pastor until his retirement in 1982. In his retirement, he continued to serve in various capacities in churches throughout the Capital District. The 65 years of his ministry were characterized by optimism and a belief in the individual's ability, by faith, to overcome limitations and to reach the potential for which they were created. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Diehl Rhinesmith; his daughters, Jane Glassman, Ann Jampel (Robert), Martha Leoce (Michael) and Mary Lockwood (David); and three sisters, Betty Austin, Beverly Colgrove and Lois Lindeman. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Matthew Glassman and his wife Sarah, Rebecca Glassman and her fiancee Jeffrey O'Shea and Jonathan Jampel. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Patterson Rhinesmith; his son-in-law, David Glassman; his two brothers, Herbert and Homer and his sister, Jane Hincks. Slingerland, Josephine D. CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. Josephine D. Slingerland (Peck) died Thursday, July 15, 2004, peacefully at the age of 93 at her home in Crystal River, Fla., where she was the eldest member of a four-generation household of six people. Her bedside was surrounded by all of her loving family living in Fla., including Rosetta Kelley. Daughter of Clara and Sidney Peck, she was born on December 4, 1910 in Coeymans Hollow, N.Y. She is survived by a daughter, Joan S. Roy; seven grandchildren, Sharon (Chuck) Hammond, Alan Roy, Susan (Frank) Virgilio, Hugh Slingerland, Albert Slingerland, Holly (Eddie) Heck; and Ralph (Anne) Becker; twelve great-grandchildren, Shawn Roy, Terah (Austin) Murphy, Tori Heck, Nicole and Samantha Hammond, Kelly, Kaitlin and Hunter Slingerland, Katerina and Jason Virgilio, and Ross and Ryan Becker. She is also survived by two sisters, Marjorie Carpenter and Emma Hunt; one brother, Robert Peck; and several nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces. She was predeceased by her parents, Clara and Sidney Peck; her husband, Ralph B. Slingerland; two sons, Harmon J. and Albert R. Slingerland; one daughter, Laura S. Goodspeed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Onesquethaw Reformed Church and her cremains will be interred at the Onesquethaw Cemetery directly after. She is a member of the Onesquethaw Reformed Church and, in lieu of flowers, anyone wishing may make contributions to the Youth Group at that church at 11 Groesbeck Road, Feura Bush, N.Y. 12067. (Claudia) Suppa and Joy Williams, both of Latham; brother of Josephine Frisco of Las Vegas, Nev. and the late Jerry Suppa and Salvatore Suppe; grandfather of Christine (Matthew) Hoyt of Troy and Claudine (Bill) Nevins of Menands; great-grandfather of Hannah Love Hoyt; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Toomajian Sr., Charles BRUNSWICK Charles Richard Toomajian Sr., 91, of Hoosick Road, died Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy after a brief illness. Born in Fowler, Calif., he was the son of the late Martin Toomajian and Hazel (Barsam) Toomajian and husband for 40 years of Frances Furdyna Toomajian and the late Goldie M. Shooshan Toomajian. He had resided in North Troy and Brunswick for most of his life and attended Alfred University and SUNY Albany. Mr. Toomajian owned and operated a service station on River Street in Troy across from Cluett's for 27 years and more recently worked as a salesman at Mooradian's Furniture on River Street in Troy. He was a member of the former Memorial United Methodist Church in Troy. Survivors in addition to his wife include a son, Charles R. Toomajian Jr. of North Adams, Mass.; a daughter, Carol Ann Toomajian of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, Martin Toomajian of Troy; five grandchildren, Tracey Tardiff of Sugar Grove, N.C., Betsy Phillips of Lynchburg, Va., Katherine Toomajian of North Adams, Charles R. Toomajian III of North Adams and Charles Perusse of Raleigh; two great-grandchildren, Reilly Tardiff and Madeline Phillips; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Armon and Leo Toomajian and a sister, Alice Mooradian. Funeral service will be held Saturday, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc., 276 Pawling Avenue, Troy.
