GUILDERLAND Glenn A. Becker, II, 31, of Guilderland, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 24, 2004. He was born in Niskayuna and was a 1992 graduate of Guilderland High School. Glenn was a loving and dedicated father to his cherished daughter, Brittany DeAnna Becker; adored son of Robin and Timothy Bliss and Glenn and Dawn Becker; devoted brother of Amy Becker; grandson of Al Pachter and the late Beryl Pachter, Harold Becker and the late Virginia Becker, Mrs. Shirley Bliss and Janis Pokeda; also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Glenn was a friend to many and touched the lives of everyone who knew him. He will missed by all who knew and loved him. (Chris) Biancosino, 76, of Burdeck Street, died at Ellis Hospital surrounded by her loving family and friends on July 25, 2004, after a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. Chris was born in Schenectady, daughter of John and Mildred Schumacher, and was a lifelong resident. She was a Little League Mom, and worked for the Schalmont School system. Chris was a homemaker and a terrific cook. She loved wood carving and nature, especially birds. Chris spent so many happy summers at Sacandaga Lake with her family and grandaughter, Sara, who she loved so much. She taught catechism at Our Lady of Assumption Church. She was the loving wife of George Biancosino Sr., and devoted mother of Peter Biancosino of Ballston Lake, and George Biancosino of Schenectady. She was the dear grandmother of Sara Biancosino. Chris was the sister of Vincent Schumacher of Maryland, Marie Czajkowski of Pennslyvania, Donald Schumacher of Schenectady, and Barbara McGinnis of Schenectady, who have all predeceased her. She was the loving sister of John Schumacher of Florida and Jean Williams of Schenectady. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Chris leaves behind many cherished friends including Joan Palmer of Schenectady and Kathie Bellizzi of Ballston Lake. Black, Nathan Charles Lane SCHENECTADY Nathan Charles Lane Black, 60, passed away peacefully Sunday, July 25, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, N.Y. after a short illness. Mr. Black was born in Chicago on February 28, 1944. He was the son of academics Helen Rudine Black and Blanton Black, Ph.D. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia where he attended Booker T. Washington High School. In 1961, Nathan matriculated to Georgia Institute of Technology in the first class to admit African Americans. He graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Engineering. Nathan was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He accepted the call to serve but he did so as a conscientious objector to war and he was trained as a combat medic. Nathan served on the front lines in Vietnam for more than a year and he was granted an honorable discharge upon his return home. Nathan worked in engineering positions for Atlanta's mass transit system and most recently, the New York State Thruway Authority an Albany, NY. He also worked as an environmental engineer in Antarctica and Algeria. Nathan was committed to environmentalism and sustainable development throughout his life. He attended the Seed of Abraham Messianic Jewish Congregation in Colonie, N.Y. Nathan married Linda Houston of Atlanta, Georgia. Their daughter Noelle Charity Patience Collins Boyd was born of that union. Nathan later married Helen Black. Nathan leaves a wife, Helen Black; a daughter, Noelle; a son-in-law, Philip Boyd; a granddaughter, Sophia; several cousins including Vicki Bostick Smith and a host of friends from the Albany area. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Fredendall Funeral Home, 199 Main St., Altamont. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in Saratoga National Cemetery. Born in Albany on June 12, 1916, she was the daughter of the late James A. Duffy and Anna Schmidt Duffy. After her mother died when she was 6, she was raised in Albany by her beloved aunt, the late Wilhelmina Schmidt Mulligan. Agnes was a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Names. She was employed by the New York Telephone Company as an account clerk from 1936 to 1971, the year she retired. She married William Joseph Clifford, Sr. of Rensselaer in 1941. He predeceased her November 8, 2003. The couple resided in both Rensselaer and Albany and lived in Albany since 1960. She is survived by her two children, Suzanne (John) O'Neill of Albany and William J. Clifford, Jr. (Barbara) of Victor, N.Y.; her five grandchildren, Jennifer A. O'Neill, John C. O'Neill and Peter T. (Kristin) O'Neill, all of Albany, Kathleen Kantz (Christopher) of Fairport, N.Y. and Megan Clifford of Rochester, N.Y.; her great-grandchildren, Daniel J. Kantz and Molly G. Kantz, both of Fairport, N.Y. and Margaret S. O'Neill of Albany. Mrs. Cocca was the daughter of the late Herbert and Ethel (Pelky) St. John and the wife of the late Frank Cocca. She retired from John Hancock Insurance Company in 1984. She enjoyed playing bingo and spending summers with her family in New York. She will be missed by her four daughters, Sandy (Trainor) Badger and her husband Bob of Tallahassee, Starr (Trainor) Busby and her husband David of Johnsonville, Lisa (Simmons) McAllister and friend, Wayne Brown of Tallahassee, and Lori (Simmons) Rosney and her husband Kevin of Troy; her seven grandchildren, Jodi, Candy, Dancy, Robbie, Crystal, Kayla and Sarah; seven great-grandchildren; Cody, Cheyenne, Tristan, Cara, Abby, Hunter and Matthew; and Frank's two sons, Frank and Ron Cocca. Draper, 87, of South Gate Rd., died Sunday, July 25, 2004 at Villa Mary Immaculate in Albany after a long illness. Born in Wilton, N.H., Norman was the son of the late Guy and Hattie Washburn Draper. For 43 years, he was a land surveyor and engineer for the Abbott Machine Co. in Wilton. Survivors include his wife, Carol A. Carolus Draper; two sons, Claude and Douglas Draper, both of New Hampshire; one stepson, Barry Estey of New Hampshire; three stepdaughters, Sherry Hart of New Hampshire, Jane Estey of Illinois and Ellen Keibasa of Hawaii; two brothers, Kenneth Smokey Draper and Philip Draper, both of New Hapshire. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Norman was predeceased by two wives, Miriam and Eleanor Draper and his daughter, Margaret Simmons. Eson, age 83, of Pinetree Lane in Albany died Saturday evening, July 24, 2004 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. She was a graduate of the John Marshall High School and was active in theatre program. After graduation, she attended the University of Chicago for 3 years. She married Morris Eson in 1943 and spent time in Panama and Virginia accompanying her husband during his service in the Army. She moved to Albany in 1951 when her husband joined the facility of New York State College for Teachers (SUNY Albany). She was a lifelong artist, mostly self-taught but attended occasional workshops and read extensively. She taught painting to friends and taught in the Massry Senior Residence. She taught and encouraged all her grandchildren to paint and love art. She enjoyed every opportunity to travel and visit museums and galleries. There will be an exhibit of her artwork at Bethlehem Public Library from August 2 - August 31. Mrs Eson accompanied her husband during sabbatical years for several extended stays in Israel. She and her family have been affiliated with Congregation Ohav Shalom and Temple Israel in Albany. She is survived by her husband Morris of Albany; her children, Charles (Karen) of Altamont, N.Y., Elizabeth Vigoda (David) of Delmar, N.Y., Marc (Rhonda) of Atlanta, Georgia and Jud (Nancy) of Delmar, N.Y.; grandmother of Benjamin, Rachel, Lena, Sarah and Lauren. Whitey Heath, 70, of Fillmore Avenue, died peacefully on Sunday, July 25, 2004 following a long illness. He was born in Catskill on March 25, 1934 and was the son of the late Donald and Mildred (Brown) Heath. Mr. Heath was married to Nancy A. Lewis on October 8, 1960. Shortly after their wedding, he settled in Schenectady with his wife. He was a retired truck driver. He was a long time communicant of St. Paul the Apostle and was a member of their Men's Club. He enjoyed bowling and other sporting activities but was passionate about the extensive traveling he was able to do with his wife. He was the devoted husband of 44 years to Nancy A. Heath; the beloved father of Michael A. Heath and his long time girlfriend, Sandra Alex Lech of Colonie and Linda M. Mitchell-Zerella of Amsterdam; as well as the cherished grandfather of Angela, Andrew and Rachel Mitchell of Amsterdam. Other survivors include his sister, Constance Iten of Catskill; a brother-in-law, David M. Lewis and his wife, Carol of Griswold, Conn.; several nieces, nephews also survive him. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Richard Heath. Born in Albany, he was a lifelong resident. He had been employed for more than 40 years by Sterling Organics in Rensselaer. He had served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961. He was a member of the Watervliet Lodge of Elks #1500, a member of the James Hill Hook and Ladder Fire Dept. and a communicant of the Church of the Holy Cross. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a great friend and neighbor who made time for everyone. His ability to fix anything that was broken or to make new, was one of his greatest attributes. He touched the lives of all he met and will be missed by everyone who loved him. Son of the late Earl and Marian Smith Hoffman. Kopcza, Michael Andy COHOES Michael Andy Kopcza, 57, of Chadwick Square in Cohoes, died Sunday July 25, 2004 at the Albany Medical Center Hospital. He was the beloved husband of 35 years of Sharon McCarthy Kopcza. Born in Ithica, son of Michael Kopcza of Ballston Spa and the late Marie LaBombard Kopcza, he resided in Poughkeepsie for 15 years and in Clifton Park for 10 years before moving to Cohoes one year ago. Mr Kopcza was a 1965 graduate of Heatly High School in Green Island, where he lettered in Soccer and basketball and attended Hudson Valley Community College, where he was named All Regional in Soccer. After serving in the US Navy, he was a member of the Troy Police Department from 1969 until joining the NYS Police in 1972, retiring in 1995 as a sergeant. He was an avid bowler and had achieved two 300 games in his career. Survivors, in addition to his wife and father, include his two sons, Michael A. Kopcza, Jr. of Clifton Park and Paul (Shannon) Kopcza of Utica; and four grandchildren, Taylor Marie, Michael III, Alexandra and Katie Kopcza. ALBANY Edward M. Lane, died July 21, 2004 at Julie Blair Nursing Home. He was born June 2, 1930 to Manuel and Ethel Lane in Albany, N.Y. He was educated in the Albany School System and graduated from Philip Schuyler in 1950. Ed joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Korean War. He also served in the U.S. Army. Published in the Albany Times Union on 7/27/2004. Lord, Eva Blair WESTERLO Eva Blair Lord, 100 years, of Westerlo, N.Y., passed away Saturday, July 24, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, N.Y. Eva known fondly to many generations in the Westerlo community as Aunt Eva, was born in Danvers, Mass. on May 23, 1904. She was the daughter of the late Napoleon and Hegwidge (Goodreau) Blair, formerly of Quebec, Canada. Eva was a loving sister growing up in a large family and spent her childhood helping to take care of her five other siblings in Cohoes, N.Y. After some time, the family relocated to Westerlo, where their father began to operate a dairy farm. It was there she met and married the late Archie Reynolds Lord. In 1945, Aunt Eva began her career as a cook at the old Westerlo Grade School. It was then she was asked to help for a mere two weeks, which turned into a 27 year culinary adventure. Being both creative and deeply caring to all of the school children, Aunt Eva produced meals which were both nutritious and fun. Children looked forward to tray decorations, holiday food shapes and special desserts that routinely transformed dull into delicious. Eva was a member of the Westerlo Reformed Church, Ladies Aid Society, the Westerlo Historical Society, the New York State School Food Service Association and the Hilltowns Senior Citizens. She is survived by one son, Howard F. Lord of Hannacroix, N.Y.; two grandchildren; two great-grandsons. A memorial service will be on Saturday, July 31, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 SR 81, Greenville, N.Y. 12083. Interment will be in the Westerlo Rural Cemetery. Born in Albany, he has been a Capital District resident all of his life. An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Maxwell was in housekeeping management at the Stratton V.A. Medical Center for 30 years, retiring in 1983, and earlier had been a member of the Albany Painters Union. He was an avid hunter with his pal, Earl Langenbach. Husband of the late Elizabeth A. Capasso Maxwell, he was the beloved father of Mrs. David (Claudia) Brown; Alfred C. (Christine) Maxwell Jr., both of Castleton; Michael T. (Janine) of Delmar; Mark L. (Christine) of Nassau and Peter W. (friend, Sue Dornan) Maxwell of E. Greenbush; brother of Emily Dietz and the late William Maxwell and Alva Slauson. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, one of whom (Shawn) is serving in the Army in Iraq; and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. McClatchy, RSCJ, 91 years, died at Kenwood Convent of the Sacred Heart on Saturday, July 24, 2004. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 25, 1913, she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart on Dec. 8, 1933, making her final vows at Kenwood in February, 1941. From 1936 until 1976, Sr. McClatchy who had received most of her education in France, Spain and Austria, taught English, French and Spanish in Sacred Heart Schools in Philadelphia, Providence, R.I., Portsmouth, R.I. and Princeton, N.J. After those years, Sr. McClatchy taught neurologically impaired children at Jordan School in Princeton, N.J. for three years. Earnestness, generosity, dedication and love for her students characterized her teaching years. From 1982 until 1992, Sr. Clara served in St. James Parish in Pennington, N.J., teaching Scripture and leading prayer groups. In 1992, she retuned to Albany where she retired at her beloved Kenwood. Sr. McClatchy was preceded in death two years ago by her identical twin sister, Estelle McClatchy Garrity. She is survived by several loving and devoted nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. McCloskey, New York State Law Enforcement Pioneer, 89, of Alterra Wynwood Manlius, N.Y. died on Sunday, July 25, 2004 at Francis House in Syracuse. A former agent of the FBI, Mr. McCloskey served as sheriff of Chautauqua County for 14 years from 1952-1966, during which time he applied his FBI training to professionalize law enforcement practices county wide. He then moved to Albany where he served as director of the New York State Division for Local Police providing information, training and consultation to state and local law enforcement agencies on effective professional law enforcement. He later served as commissioner of Clifton Park, New York. and a supervisor of Saratoga County. He carried on a family tradition of work in law enforcement; his grandfather, Syracuse policeman Anthony J. Haley, carried the departments #1 badge at the turn of the century. Mr. McCloskey lived in retirement in Sun City Center, Florida, from 1982-2004, where he was active in the Prince of Peace Catholic Parish, served as a Hospice volunteer, and completed his memoirs. A native of Syracuse, he graduated from St. Mary's Cathedral School and Niagra University Survivors include his four children, Charles C. Sleasman, Christopher SARATOGA SPRINGS Christopher Sleasman, 88, entered into eternal life in the loving presence of his family on Sunday, July 25, 2004 at the Community Hospice at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Recently, he was a resident of Saratoga Springs, New York. Chris served in the United States Marine Corps at Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Theatre. Upon his return from service, and for more than 40 years, Chris was a proprietor, with his brothers Fred and Jack, of Albany's Modern Food Market on New Scotland Avenue. The Modern became an Albany landmark known for its quality and service for generations. He retired in 1976. Chris was a founding member of both St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Albany, and St. Edward the Confessor Parish in Clifton Park and most recently was a communicant at St. Clement's Church in Saratoga Springs. He was an active supporter of the Church and participated in many spiritual and social programs. Chris was also known for his Irish tenor, his wit and in his younger years, his excellence in a variety of sports, particularly baseball in which he played semi-professional ball, golf and bowling. He was formerly a member of the Knights of Columbus (Clifton Park), the Marine Corps League, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. She was born on April 9, 1958 in Cohoes, N.Y. Dawn was raised in Cohoes and moved with her family to Clifton Park in 1968. She was a 1976 graduate of Shenendehowa High School and in 1978 graduated from Hudson Valley Community College. She received her bachelor's degree from SUNY @ Geneseo and later earned her master's degree in special education from SUNY @ Oswego. For the past 7 years, Dawn was a much loved special education teacher at Shenendehowa Central School's Gowana Middle School. Earlier, she taught in the Cohoes School System, the Brownville School District in Watertown, Oswego School System and Canton School System. She was looking forward to becoming an adjunct professor at the College of St. Rose evening division in the fall. Dawn had the ability to encourage her students to go beyond their fear factor and realize the enjoyment of learning. She enjoyed running and was a member of the Southern Saratoga YMCA Running Group. Currently, Dawn was training hard for the Hartford Classic, her first full marathon in the fall. In addition to runnning, her love of the outdoors brought her boating and gardening. Dawn's creative mind was expressed through her love of painting and the arts. She enjoyed music, dancing and entertainment. Her beautiful vision of life will continue through her organ donation. She was the beloved daughter of Alton A. and Lorraine Simard Hobbs; devoted mother of Sara E. Student and Alexandria K. Student, all of Clifton Park; former wife of Donald J. Whited, Jeanette Jan CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON Jeanette Jan Pearlman Whited of Cornwall-On-Hudson, a retired teacher in the Newburgh School District, and lifelong resident of the area, died at Elant of Newburgh on Sunday, July 25, 2004. She was 83 years old. The daughter of Louis and Minnie Siegler Pearlman, she was born July 20, 1921 in Newburgh. She was the widow of Robert C. Whited, whom she married in 1941. He passed away in 1994. One of the Newburgh Free Academy's youngest students, she graduated at age 14. She was a graduate of S.U.N.Y. New Paltz and completed Special Education Certification and graduate work at Teacher's College, Columbia University, and New York University. Mrs. Whited was a special education teacher at South Junior High, Newburgh for 39 years. She also did psychological testing in the Newburgh School System. She taught English, Remedial and speed reading at N.F.A. summer sessions and Adult Education evening classes. In her early years, she worked summers as a Newburgh playground leader, supervisor of crafts in the city playgrounds and craft instructor at the YMCA Day Camp. She also was a Girl Scout Leader. Mrs. Whited set up and supervised the Newburgh Jewish Community Center Day Camp in its beginning years. An outstanding athlete in high school and college, she was active in ladies and mixed bowling leagues in the area for many years. She was generous with her time and talents. She was a member of the Newburgh Area Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association, A.A.R.P., American Diabetes Association N.Y. Chapter, Arthritis Foundation, Club 55+ at Cornwell Hospital, and friends of the Cornwell Public Library. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Jerry Beckwith of Poughkeepsie; sister-in-law, Ruth Ferguson of Cornwall; sister-in-law, Beverly Pearlman of Boca Raton, Fla. and a dear friend Lenore Smith of New Windsor and cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Zemler, Dorothy TROY Dorothy Zemler, 100, of Van Rensselaer Manor, died Sunday, July 25, 2004 at Albany Memorial Hospital Community Hospice. Dorothy had been a resident of Van Rensselaer Manor since 1998. She was born in N.Y.C., moved to Old Chatham in 1946. She moved to Nassau in 1995 and then Van Rensselaer Manor. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred Zemler; a sister, Marion. She is survived by a brother, Al Fortanas of Dumont, N.J. Dorothy requested that there be no service. Published in the Albany Times Union on 7/27/2004. Zullo, Anthony L. MECHANICVILLE Anthony L. Sam Spade Zullo, 82, of North Main Street, died Monday, July 26, 2004 at Albany Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. A native and lifelong resident of Mechanicville, he was born October 30, 1921, son of the late Salvatore and Mary Cimino Zullo. A World War II US Navy veteran, Mr. Zullo was a 2nd class torpedo man, who served in the European Theatre of Operations. He worked for 33 years with the former West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. in Mechanicville, unitl the plant closed in 1971. Later, he worked for the NYS Dept. of Health, Albany, the Mechanicville Public Schools and a couple of security companies. A lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6328, Mechanicville, the local Italian Fraternal Society and Assumption-St. Paul Church. Mr. Zullo enjoyed bingo and casino gambling, along with vegetable gardening. He was predeceased by sons, Angelo and Louis Zullo; a brother, John Zullo. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Edna Hazzard Zullo; sons, Anthony, Jr. of Fla., Patrick of Texas, Arthur of Mechanicville and Joseph of Plattsburgh; also daughters, Kathryn Baker St. Onge of Mechannicville, Gloria Wells of Gansevoort and Mary Ellen Zullo of Minn.; along with six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; also sisters, Anne Campano of Va., Marie Welch of Fla. and Frances Hess of Southern, N.Y.; a brother, Lenny Zullo of Ballston Spa; nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Cemetery, Mechanicville. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Assoc.
