Longtime cherry grower and Leelanau County resident, Raymond Earl Alpers, passed away July 23, 2004 at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Raymond was born on August 4, 1914 in East Leland to the late Herman and Matilda (Vowinkel) Alpers. He received his early education in the Houdek School in East Leland. In 1939 he married Margaret Plamondon who preceded him in death in 1983. He was the manager of Redpath Orchards on Eagle Highway, just a mile from his birthplace, for 40 years until his retirement in 1979. He was an active member of and held leadership positions in Michigan Cherry Producers Association, National Red Cherry Institute, Leland Township Zoning Board, Suttons Bay Rotary, St. Mary's Parish Finance Council and Michigan Horticultural Society. He served on the Board of Directors of Cherry Growers, Inc. for 27 years and as president from 1979-1981. In 1981 he was named Cherry Industry Man of the Year by the National Cherry Festival and Cherry Marketing Institute. In the interest of agriculture, he was chosen to participate in President Eisenhower's People to People Good Will Tour behind the Iron Curtain in 1963. In 1998 he received a Lifetime Service Award from St. Mary's Parish for his involvement and support of the parish and school. He was one of the original founders of the Sweetheart Dinner, a fund raiser to benefit Catholic education on the Leelanau Peninsula. In 1984, he married the former Mary Kay Puma and made his home in Defreestville, N.Y. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his sons, Jerry of St. Augustine, Fla.; David (Jean) of Lake Leelanau, Mich.; his daughters, Janet Alpers of Suttons Bay, Linda (Hugh) Rea and Nancy (Chris) Korbel, both of Traverse City, Mich.; his step-daughters, Maria Puma-Goldman and her husband Andrew Goldman of Fairfax, Vt. and Cris Puma-Ries and her husband Jonathan Ries of Averill Park, N.Y. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Delia Egeler and Emma Weiler and his brothers, Carl, Henry, Harold and Willard. He will always be remembered as a man of his word with a high work ethic who was devoted to his family, his Church and his community. Our beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend will be greatly missed. In keeping with his spirit, the services will be delayed until after the peak cherry harvest with visitation held on Thursday, August 5, from 6-9 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Brunkhorst, Augustus REXFORD Augustus Gus Brunkhorst, 71, died at home on Tuesday, July 13, 2004 following a brief illness. Gus was born in River Edge, N.J. on April 21, 1933, residing in Bergen County until 1978. A graduate of Hackensack High School, where he played basketball at the state championship level and graduate of Fairleigh-Dickinson University. Gus lived in Charlton from 1978-1995, moving to Rexford from 1995 to present. Gus was once manager of OPRANDY'S Store and Catering in N.J. and later regional sales manager for National Distillers in Manhattan. Most recently he was associated with Mike Winkler working in wood cabinetry. Gus was a proud Army veteran where he served as an MP at Fort Gordon, Ga. and Ft. Dix, N.J. Throughout his life Gus was known for his readiness to help a friend and will be remembered for always being there in a time of need. He was married to Claire Koppel Brunkhorst on September 8, 1979. He is a long standing member and past president of the Schenectady Curling Club, where he was recipient of the 2001 Duguid Award for service, former Ballston Spa C.C. and lower Mohawk Club. Gus was a member of the ladder league at the Edison Club in Rexford. He was predeceased by his parents, August and Loretta Aims Brunkhorst and by his brother, Gerard Brunkhorst. Survivors include his wife, Claire Brunkhorst of Rexford; a son, Michael Brunkhorst and his wife Andrea of Pearl River, N.Y.; a daughter, Karen Ringier of Bushkill, Pa.; three grandchildren, Samantha and Chelsea Brunkhorst and Jenna Goldband. Born in Quebec, Canada he was son of the late Joseph and Rose Larochelle Carrier. He became a U.S. Citizen after serving in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Paratrooper Division at Ft. Bragg, N.C. from 1954 to 1956. He moved to Cohoes in 1957 and was employed at Norton Co. in Watervliet for 36 years. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Edith Mae Cummings Carrier. They had renewed their vows on June 27, 2003. He is the father of Carolyn Jubert of Cohoes and Richard Carrier and his wife Melissa of Ballston Lake; brother of Rosario, Raymond, Emile and Claude Carrier, Claire Picotin, Mary Cote' all of Canada and the late Hermel Carrier. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Justin and Rachel Victoria; his cousins, Bert and Doris Gagnon of Cohoes as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Born in Albany on June 12, 1916, she was the daughter of the late James A. Duffy and Anna Schmidt Duffy. After her mother died when she was 6, she was raised in Albany by her beloved aunt, the late Wilhelmina Schmidt Mulligan. Agnes was a graduate of the Academy of the Holy Names. She was employed by the New York Telephone Company as an account clerk from 1936 to 1971, the year she retired. She married William Joseph Clifford, Sr. of Rensselaer in 1941. He predeceased her November 8, 2003. The couple resided in both Rensselaer and Albany and lived in Albany since 1960. She is survived by her two children, Suzanne (John) O'Neill of Albany and William J. Clifford, Jr. (Barbara) of Victor, N.Y.; her five grandchildren, Jennifer A. O'Neill, John C. O'Neill and Peter T. Corratti, Lisa Marie RENSSELAER Lisa Marie Corratti of Rensselaer, N.Y. died at St. Peter's Hospital Tuesday morning, July 27, 2004 after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. She was the beloved daughter of Patricia M. Briggs of East Greenbush, N.Y. and New Port Richey, Fla. and the loving sister of Joseph E. Vriale of Cairo, N.Y., who were at her side when God called her home. Born on February 19, 1966, Lisa grew up in Greene County, living on Sandy Plains Road in South Cairo. She attended Cairo Durham Central School prior to moving to Rensselaer County where she attended Hudson Valley Community College. In 1984, she was first employed as a student intern with the New York State Department of Correctional Services at their training academy on New Scotland Avenue and later became a full-time employee for over eight years. In 1995, she joined the New York State Bill Drafting Commission, working in their purchasing department as a clerk until her illness forced her disability in November of 2003. Lisa was a very gregarious person who always had a smile on her face and a sparkle in her eye. She loved traveling, especially to Florida, where she had family and friends or to visit Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. Her maternal grandparents, Ernest and Emily Briggs of South Cairo, N.Y. and her paternal grandparents, Frank and Viola Corratti, predecease her. In addition to her mother and brother, Lisa is also survived by a great aunt, Bernadine Quinn of Bayshore, Long Island; her uncles, Ernest Briggs of Phoenix, Ariz., Robert Briggs of Palm Springs, Calif., Edward Briggs of South Cairo, N.Y.; her aunt, Maureen Ricci of Freehold, N.Y.; numerous cousins and other family members. Lisa is also survived by her father, Frank Corratti Jr. of Cairo, N.Y., his sister, Rose Law, and his daughter, Laura Corratti, both of Catskill, N.Y. Clemmy was a homemaker and had been employed by the NYS Department of Tax and Finance in the 1950s. Frederick, 79, of Colonie, passed away on Monday, July 26, 2004, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Watervliet and was the son of the late George H. and Gertrude H. Cummings Frederick. George was a graduate of Vencentian Institute. Mr. Frederick was a U.S. Navy veteran serving his country during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Aaron Ward. Upon completion of his military service, he attended Siena College. He worked at Wedekind Motors for many years and for PepsiCo as the corporate real estate representative before his retirement. Upon retiring, George was currently working as a code enforcement officer for the Village of Colonie. He was a member of the Colonie Elks Lodge #2192 and the American Legion Post #471. For the past seven years, George also volunteered as an ambassador at the Albany International Airport. Mr. Frederick enjoyed traveling, boating and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He was loved and respected by all of those who knew him. George is the beloved husband of 55 years to Rosemary E. Frederick. He is the devoted father of Mary Christina Flynn and Teresa Kucskar and her husband Paul, all of Ballston Lake, Timothy P. Frederick and his wife Kimberly of Knox, Terrence M. Frederick of Clifton Park and Daniel J. Frederick of Vail, Colo. He is the brother of Robert Frederick of Ga. and Paul Frederick of Lake George. He is the cherished grandfather of J.J., Amanda, Courtney, Timothy, Marisa, Ashley and Brandon. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. (Goodreau) Germain, and brother of the late Kenneth Germain. Ray retired from the General Electric Company in Schenectady where he had been employed for 34 years, serving as head chef for most of his career and was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club. He was a lifelong devoted member of the Schuylerville United Methodist Church and was involved in many community activities in the church, Schuylerville Historical Society, and Meals on Wheels, and was named Schuylerville Senior Citizen of the Year. He enjoyed gardening and riding his tractor. He was the devoted father of Raymond S. (Marcia) Germain of Glenville, Stan Germain of Freeport, Long Island and Mary Anne Germain (Jonathan Kreisberg) of Coventry, Conn. Hurley, Helen Ann CASTLETON Helen Ann Hurley, RN, Sunrise February 6, 1918, Sunset July 27, 2004 at the Resurrection Nursing Home after a brief illness. Helen was born in East Meadows, Long Island, graduating from Kings County Nursing School in 1941. She joined the US Navy Nurses Corps to serve her country on Guam in World War II in the Pacific Campaign. She reached the rank of lieutenant. Helen was a communicant of Church of St. Mary's Clinton Heights and a member of the East Greenbush Historical Society. Even as the shadow of eternal life encircled her, she was quick to ask, What can I do for you? Very proud of her profession as a registered nurse, she continued to assist her fellow patrons at the home. Helen worked many years at St. Peter's Hospital and retired from the VA Hospital in 1979. She epitomized the caring, compassion, commitment and concern toward all these in need throughout her career and life. She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. Helen is survived by Dennis J. Hurley Jr. (Keli), Michael S. Hurley (Barbara) and Timothy P. Hurley (Janice). Also survived by three grandchildren, Dennis Jason Hurley, Michael S. Ivey, Richard Russell ALBANY Mr. Richard Jackie Russell Ivey, age 55, of Bleeker Terraces, Albany, died Sunday, July 25, 2004 at Albany Medical Center Hospital. He was born December 11, 1948 in Warrenton, Ga., the son of Bessie Ivey of Albany and the late Richard Burnett. Richard served in the United States Air Force during the Viet Nam Conflict. He was predeceased by his former wife, Joyce Swain, on January 12, 1997; a daughter, Connie Lynn Ivey; a brother, Charles E. Ivey and a sister, Elizabeth Swain. During World War II, she served in the Army Nurse Corps, holding the rank of 1st Lieutenant, and was stationed in England, France and Germany with the 98th General Hospital. Sleasman, Christopher SARATOGA SPRINGS Christopher Sleasman, 88, entered into eternal life in the loving presence of his family on Sunday, July 25, 2004 at the Community Hospice at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Recently, he was a resident of Saratoga Springs, New York. Chris served in the United States Marine Corps at Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Theatre. Upon his return from service, and for more than 40 years, Chris was a proprietor, with his brothers, Fred and Jack, of Albany's Modern Food Market on New Scotland Avenue. The Modern became an Albany landmark known for its quality and service for generations. He retired in 1976. He was a founding member of both St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Albany, and St. Edward the Confessor Parish in Clifton Park and most recently was a communicant at St. Clement's Church in Saratoga Springs. He was an active supporter of the Church and participated in many spiritual and social programs. He was also known for his Irish tenor, his wit and in his younger years, his excellence in a variety of sports, particularly baseball in which he played semi-professional ball, golf and bowling. He was formerly a member of the Knights of Columbus (Clifton Park), the Marine Corps League, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. Chris was born in Albany, N.Y., the son of the late Christopher W. Sleasman Sr., and Mary Brophy Sleasman. Chris is survived by his wife of 58 happy years, Marie Kieran Sleasman of Saratoga Springs, and ten children, Daniel M. Whited, Jeanette Jan CORNWALL-ON-HUDSON Jeanette Jan Pearlman Whited of Cornwall-On-Hudson, a retired teacher in the Newburgh School District, and lifelong resident of the area, died at Elant of Newburgh on Sunday, July 25, 2004. She was 83 years old. The daughter of Louis and Minnie Siegler Pearlman, she was born July 20, 1921 in Newburgh. She was the widow of Robert C. Whited, whom she married in 1941. He passed away in 1994. One of the Newburgh Free Academy's youngest students, she graduated at age 14. She was a graduate of S.U.N.Y. New Paltz and completed Special Education Certification and graduate work at Teacher's College, Columbia University, and New York University. Mrs. Whited was a special education teacher at South Junior High, Newburgh for 39 years. She also did psychological testing in the Newburgh School System. She taught English, Remedial and speed reading at N.F.A. summer sessions and Adult Education evening classes. In her early years, she worked summers as a Newburgh playground leader, supervisor of crafts in the city playgrounds and craft instructor at the YMCA Day Camp. She also was a Girl Scout Leader. Mrs. Whited set up and supervised the Newburgh Jewish Community Center Day Camp in its beginning years. An outstanding athlete in high school and college, she was active in ladies and mixed bowling leagues in the area for many years. She was generous with her time and talents. She was a member of the Newburgh Area Retired Teachers Association, National Retired Teachers Association, A.A.R.P., American Diabetes Association N.Y. Chapter, Arthritis Foundation, Club 55+ at Cornwell Hospital, and friends of the Cornwell Public Library.
