ALTAMONT Robert E. Barbagelott, 64, died Friday, May 28, 2004 at the Albany Medical Center Hospital. He was born in Albany, the son of the late Robert J. and Florence Barbagelott. He spent many years in Altamont and was a 1957 graduate of Guilderland High School. Mr. Barbagelott served in the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring after 20 years and was a Vietnam veteran. He then received his BA from Old Dominion University in Virginia. He was the brother of Keith J. Barbagelott of New Orleans, La. and the late Edward Barbagelott; uncle of Jason and Daniel Barbagelott of Columbus, Ga. There will be no services. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont. SCOTIA Elizabeth Jane (Walker) Benson, 99, of Scotia, N.Y., formerly of Holiday, Fla. and Brockton, Mass., widow of Wilfred, died Sunday, May 29, 2004 at the Glendale Nursing Home in Scotia, N.Y. She was born in Avon, Mass., daughter of the late Harry G. and Harriet M. (Simmons) Walker and educated in Avon and Rockland Schools. She graduated from Boston University. After her marriage to Wilfred, she lived for many years on Summer Street in Brockton and was very active in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, being a choir mother, member of St. Hilda's Guild, Altar Guild and Women's Guild. When she and her husband moved to Holiday, Fla. in 1975, they joined St. Stephen's Episcopal in New Port Richey, Fla. Mrs. Benson is survived by a son, Richard W. Bernard, Donna Carol ALBANY Donna Carol (Benson) Bernard, 59, of Second Avenue, Albany finally succumbed June 1, 2004 after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born in Albany, she was a resident of the Capital Region all of her life. She had worked for Childs Hospital in the laundry department for over 20 years prior to her retiring in 1990. Donna was predeceased by her husband, Gene Bernard; her father, Norton Benson; a son, Stephen Benson; and brother, Robert Benson. BREWSTER, Mass. Richard C. Bower, age 69, died at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston, on Friday, May 28, 2004. He is the husband of Ann M. (Gackenheimer) Bower of Brewster, Mass. for 30 years. Mr. Bower was born in Syracuse, N.Y. and lived in several cities in that state. He served in the U.S. Air Force where he achieved the rank of captain. After graduating from Union College in 1956, he continued studying for an advanced degree at SUNY College of Technology. He was employed at NY Telephone Co. as a division manager and taught telecommunications at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). As a former Eagle Scout, he was dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America, also receiving the Silver Beaver Award. Most recently, he was active with Jr. Achievement, Kiwanis, and a communicant of Our Lady of Cape Church. He and his wife moved to Brewster, Mass. in 2002 from Buffalo, N.Y. where he had summered for many years. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Daniel Bower of Oak Hill, Va., John J. Simonian of Wellfleet; four daughters, Christine Bower of N.Y., N.Y., Susan Bower Clark of Duxbury, Jayne Rinaldi of Troy, N.Y., Becky Simonian of Marcy, N.Y.; one sister, Rev. Cameron, Mary B. ALBANY Mary B. Cameron passed away on May 26, 2004 at the age of 100. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Cameron, to whom she had been married for 59 years. Survivors include her sons, Charles B. Cameron Jr. of Morgan Hill, Calif., Edward M. Cameron II of Albany and Bruce Cameron of Palm Desert, Calif.; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great- grandchild as well as a brother and sister. She was born in Chicago, Ill. and graduated from Mt. Holyoke College in 1924. She served as an officer and on the boards of directors of many local organizations, including the Visiting Nurses Association, the YWCA, the Legal Aid Society, the Albany Academy Mothers' Association, the Junior League and the First Presbyterian Church, of which she was the oldest living member. VOORHEESVILLE Jeannette D. Coughtry, age 83, died Monday, May 31, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Grover and Johanna Aschenbrenner Kling. She lived on Hilton Road in Voorheesville for many years and was employed as a clerk for the New York State Department of Labor, retiring 18 years ago. Jeannette was a loving mother and wife. Demars, Mary C. CHATHAM Mary C. Demars, 75, of Kinderhook, N.Y., formerly of Chatham, died Monday, May 31, 2004 at Albany Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Demars born June 27, 1929 in Kingston, N.Y., the daughter of the late Bernard and Anne (Moore) Chester. She graduated from Chatham High School and attended Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y. She worked in the family business, Chester Manufacturing in Chatham for several years. In her younger years, Mary enjoyed playing golf and it was through that she met her husband of 50 years, William F. Demars of Kinderhook at the Wolfert's Roost in Loudonville, N.Y. where Mary and her family were members. In her later years, she became a tennis fan. She and her husband enjoyed trips to Albany and Saratoga to watch tennis matches. She enjoyed going out to lunch with her son, Bill Jr. Mrs. Demars was a communicant of St. James R.C. Church in Chatham. Besides her husband Bill, she is survived by three sons, Pat and his wife Karen of Phoenix, Ariz., Mike and his wife Laurie of Austerlitz, N.Y., Bill Jr. and his wife Sandy of Loudonville, N.Y. Survived by grandchildren, Rachel, Anna and Aaron of Austerlitz, Matt and Miles of Arizona; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Betty Ryan. Born in Patterson, N.J., he was the son of the late Eileen DeMoor. Mark was a union mason, a journeyman and a stone mason. He was a member of the B.A.C. Local #2 in Albany and also the B.A.C. Local #1 in Long Island. Mark was an avid NY Giants fan. He loved good food, camping, amusement parks, traveling, the boardwalk at Seaside Heights, N.J. and tattoos. Mark cherished his children, he was loved by many and will be dearly missed. Mark is survived by his wife Kimberly DeMoor of Colonie; his son, Vincenzo DeMoor of Colonie; his daughter, Madison Burrell of Colonie; and his sister, Robin Smith and her husband P.O. 1st Class Kenneth Smith U.S.N. Epstein, age 85, of Albany, N.Y., died on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 after a brief illness in the St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. He was the husband of the late Louise (Bender) Epstein. A 50-year resident in Marblehead, Mass., he moved to Albany in November of 2000. Born in Boston, the son of the late Philip and Dora (Cohen) Epstein, he graduated from Dorchester High School, Boston University, Hebrew Teachers College in Boston and he received his law degree from Boston University. He was a member of the law fraternity, Tau Epsilon Rho. Mr. Epstein practiced law in Boston from 1941 until 1999. He was a member of the Mass. and American Bar Associations and the American Trial Lawyers Assoc. He was a founder of Temple Sinai and the Cohen-Hillel Academy, both in Marblehead, Mass.; a past president of the former Lynn Hebrew School in Lynn; one of the first recipients of the KLAL Yisroel Excellence in Jewish Education given by the Bureau of Jewish Education in Boston; a volunteer for the North Shore Jewish Federation; and a Hadassah Associate. He was a member of the following organizations: the Amos Masonic Lodge in Boston, Laymen's Institute in Boston, Cong Ahabat Sholom in Lynn and Temple Sinai in Marblehead. He served with the Twelve Air Force during World War II and was a past commander of the Jewish War Veterans Post for Swampscott-Marblehead. He leaves two daughters and sons-in-law, Ellen and Robert Zirin of Schenectady, N.Y., formerly of Marblehead, Mass., Rebecca and Richard Whitehill of Marblehead, Mass.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Henry J. and Debby Epstein of Wesley Hills, N.Y., formerly of Albany, N.Y., Steven S. and Jane Epstein of Georgetown, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Betty Heck Flanagan, known to her family and friends as Dolly, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy. She was born in Dayton, Ohio and has been a resident of the Capitol District for 43 years. Betty was a communicant of St. Henry's Church in Averill Park and a member of Rosary Altar Society. She was a graduate of Julienne High School in Dayton, Ohio, class of 1944 where she was president and valedictorian of her class. She was co-founder of the Dayton Chapter CYO which still is in existence today. Betty also attended Barry College in Miami Shores, Fla.. for two years. In 1947, she married Richard E. Flanagan Sr., an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. Together they had eight sons and traveled extensively with Mr. Flanagan's FBI career. She was a 2nd place finisher of the Mrs. America Pageant, Niagara Frontier Region in 1960. She was an avid swimmer and member of the Burden Lake Country Club. Betty was also a member of the Burden Lake Improvement Association. She also immensely enjoyed her Tuesday afternoon card get-togethers. He was the husband of the late Rose Valerio Foster. He had lived most of his life in Cohoes and in 1971 moved to Colonie. Gapp, Theodore L. GUILDERLAND Theodore L. Gapp, 67, of Guilderland, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at the Albany Medical Center Hospital. Mr. Gapp was born in Troy and lived most of his life in the Capital District, recently moving to Guilderland from the Town of Day. He was employed for many years by the New York State Department of Social Services. He also was a member of the Voorheesville Rod and Gun Club and was an avid outdoorsman, who loved both fishing and boating.
