Published in the Albany Times Union on 6/6/2004. Foster, Marion NISKAYUNA Marion Foster, 69, of Valencia Rd., died on Wednesday, June 2, 2004. Marion is survived by Allan Foster, her husband of 49 years, and their two sons, David (Mina) of New York City and Glenn (Joan) and grandson, Adam of Spokane, Wash. Marion was born in Stamford, Conn. to the late Astrid and Arthur Addison and attended Meriden High School. She then attended the University of Connecticut her freshman year in 1954 and was the top engineering student in her class. She moved to Schenectady in 1955 and since then has been involved in a number of activities, including traveling (Nepal, South Africa), skiing, camping and sailboat racing. In recent years, she found a real love in canoeing with her many friends in the Schenectady Wintersports Club. Her main interest through the years, however, was theater. She was a frequent onstage performer in the 60s to 80s with the Schenectady Light Opera Company, the Schenectady Civic Players, Galaxy Players and Carm Sgarlata's dinner theater group. Since the 80s, however, her interest was more in the technical and backstage area - most specifically in lighting design/operation or set construction/decoration. She was a hands-on type of person and used to work for Newth Lighting, Glenville, making the lighting instrument controls used by a number of theater and disco groups. She also was the first woman to operate the spotlight at Proctor's Theater after the theater was renovated. One of her most satisfying experiences was being the technical director for Lies and Legends of Harry Chapin, a SLOC show which was chosen in national competition to represent the United States at the 1991 Theater Festival in Barcelona, Spain. Of the ten countries represented, Marion was the only person that the Spanish theater let operate their theater lights. For the last four-plus years, however, Marion has battled re-occurrences of endometrial cancer. She has met and befriended many people on this journey and became known as a fighter and an inspiration. Marion was a caring person who enjoyed life and the people with whom she came into contact. There will be a get-together with a few short talk/remembrances starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 12 at the Schenectady Light Opera House, 826 State Street (just above the State Street hill). If you have a favorite anecdote involving Marion, feel free to bring it along. Casual clothes encouraged. There is parking at the SLOC House and the nearby street. However, other local groups have also graciously offered additional parking space, including Carver Community (846 State), State St. Presbyterian Church (823), KEM Cleaners (809, front only) and Mohawk Ambulance (adjacent to 795). Carpooling is suggested when readily feasible. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to Schenectady Light Opera, PO Box 1006, Schenectady 12301. Cremation and arrangements have been entrusted to the Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State Street, Schenectady. Published in the Albany Times Union on 6/6/2004.
