COLONIE Dorothy Greenstein Annechino, 89, died Saturday, June 12, 2004 at the Albany County Nursing Home. Born in Albany, Dorothy was a longtime Albany resident, working for the New York State Department of Labor during the 1940s and spending most of her life as a homemaker. With her late husband, Anthony J. Annechino, she enjoyed the neighborhood children when they lived on Swartson Ct. in Albany. She also enjoyed her poodles and flea markets. Dorothy was the daughter of the late Louis and Clara Greenstein; sister of the late Rose G. Silverman, Rudy Greenstein and Joseph R. Greenstein; aunt of Sandra Berinstein-Fletcher, Joseph M. Annechino, Sally Annechino and Mary Anne Royer. Born in East Greenbush, the son of Dominick and Elva Loker Cerrone and stepmother, Sarah Knowles Cerrone. Gordon is survived by his wife, Betty; daughters, Sharon McNamara of Troy, Judith Cerrone of East Greenbush, Sandra Bishop of Schodack; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Eagan of Brandenton, Fla. Gordon was also survived by his sister-in-law, Elinor and her husband, Howard Scheidel, who was his lifelong best friend. Gordon was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired electrician of IBEW Local #724. Funeral arrangements were private at the family's request. Duffney, 87, of High Street, died Saturday, June 12, 2004 at Albany Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. Born in Mechanicville, February 18, 1917, he was the son of the late Miles and Anna Mackey Duffney. Mr. Duffney grew up and attended school in Mechanicville and lived in Green Island for a number of years. He was a self-employed general contractor for many years, building and remodeling in the Capital District and also did subcontracting work for Montgomery Wards and Sears, specializing in plumbing, heat and air conditioning. During World War II, Mr. Duffney served in the U.S. Army. An avid NY Yankee baseball and boxing fan, Mr. Duffney enjoyed his camp on Saratoga Lake, boating, fishing and the company of his family and friends. He was a member of Church of Good Shepherd of Green Island. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Alice Marcella Duffney; his daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Edward Sokol Sr. of Cohoes; grandchildren, Edward and Cindy Sokol Jr. of Waterford and Donna and James Durivage of Clifton Park; great-grandchildren, Dayna and Jessica Sokol. He was predeceased by his great-grandson, Ryan Durivage; brothers, Everett, Charles and Frank Duffney; sisters, Bessie Carey, Daisey Dempsey, Thelma Osborn, Mildred Daley. Good, age 87 years, of Lakeshore Drive, died Thursday, June 10, 2004 at Albany County Nursing Home after a long illness. He was born in New York City and has lived in Averill Park for 25 years. He would vacation in Saint Petersburg, Fla. during the winter months. Mr. Good was employed as a printer for the New York Times and, after his retirement from the Times, he published a daily women's apparel magazine. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, receiving the Purple Heart, and was a communicant of St. Henry's Church in Averill Park. Husband of the late Emily E. Israel, Clara COLONIE Clara Schaffer Israel died Sunday, June 13, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital. She was born on May 4, 1909 to the late Jacob and Sarah Schaffer. She was married 60 years to the late Arthur Israel until his passing in 1994. Clara worked for many years in New York State Government for the Department of Agriculture and Markets, the Department of Health, Workmens' Compensation and the NYS Museum, retiring from the Department of State Directing Real Estate Licensing Services in 1972. She was the sister of the late Ben and Millard Schaffer and was the sister-in-law of Dr. Walter and Sondra Israel of Camarillo, California. Loving mother of two sons, Dr. David Israel and his wife Ann Sue Israel of Roslyn Harbor, N.Y. and James Israel and his wife Iris of Latham, N.Y. He retired in 1982 after 40 years as a brakeman for Amtrak. William was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the North Atlantic and South Pacific. Predeceased by his parents, William J. Malmed, Bertha ALBANY Bertha Malmed, 88, of Albany, N.Y., died Saturday, June 12, 2004 at the Daughters of Sarah Senior Community Nursing Center after a long illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Adirondack Dan Malmed. She is survived by her children, Richard and Miriam Malmed of Severance, N.Y. and Myra Nathan of Delmar, N.Y. Bertha will always be the beloved grandmother of Jennifer and William Nathan. She was born in Montreal, Canada and was the daughter of the late Rose and Meyer Bernstein and the sister of the late Robert and Harry Bernstein. Upon graduating for the McGill Conservatory of Music in Montreal, she married Daniel Malmed and moved to Albany, N.Y. in 1937. Bertha worked for the Albany City School District until her retirement. She was an avid bridge player and achieved the status of Bronze Life Master of the American Contract Bridge League. Mr. Margolis was born in Bradford, Pa. and was a graduate of the Cornell Law School. He also attended Antioch College. He was raised in Binghamton, N.Y. and had been a Capital District resident since the 1960s. He was an attorney and in private practice in Binghamton, N.Y. where he also served as an assistant district attorney. He later was employed by the New York State Health Department in Albany, retiring in 1989. He was a member of Temple Beth El in Troy and was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Air Force serving during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Claire Roubfogel Margolis; two sons, Bruce Margolis of Troy, N.Y. and Eliot Margolis of Guilderland, N.Y.; brother of Judge Israel (Ike) Margolis of Binghamton, N.Y. and Helen Smelser of San Francisco, Calif. Naze, Harold E. CLIFTON PARK Harold E. Naze, 90, of Clifton Park, formerly of Albany, died Saturday, June 12, 2004 at Albany Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Jamestown, N.D. and was the son of the late Louis and Nellie Mae Finnegan Naze. Harold grew up in N.D. and came to the Albany area in the 1940s. He had worked as an auto mechanic for Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in Albany and Schenectady for many years, retiring in 1978. Harold enjoyed bowling, wrestling and following the New York Yankees. He was the husband of the late Lola Snyder Naze and Mildred Hvizdak Naze. He is the beloved father of Jerry L. Naze (Marie) of Schenectady and Suzanne J. Lagace of Guilderland. He is the brother of the late Luella Fiss and Evelyn Siver Hanson. He is the cherished grandfather of Richard, Robert and Karen Naze, Amanda and Richard Lagace. Nilsen, Virginia A. NASSAU Virginia A. Nilsen, 65, of Lyons Lake Road, died Friday, June 11, 2004 at Springside Nursing Home in Pittsfield, Mass. Mrs. Nilsen was the daughter of the late Lee and Mary Miller Carey and the loving wife of Norman R. Nilsen Sr. Mrs. Nilsen grew up in Chatham, N.Y. and graduated from Chatham High School. Mrs. Nilsen moved to Nassau in 1964. She was a homemaker and for a time, secretary to Bob Whitney, Town Supervisor. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church where she was a choir member, the Festival of Praise Choir, a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation, being a direct descendant of a Civil War soldier. She had many hobbies and interests including Civil War history, genealogy, music, sewing and lots of travel. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Nilsen is survived by her son, Norman R. Nilsen Jr. of Nassau; two daughters, Leigh C. Nilsen of Pittsfield, Mass. and Lynn Gleason of Glendale, Ariz.; two sisters, Ruth Landry and Doreen McGivern, both of Pittsfield, Mass. Mrs. Nilsen is also survived by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Nilsen was the foster mother of Alirio Castaneda of Columbia, South America. Born in Troy, he was the beloved son of Warren E. Reynolds and Grace Cooney Reynolds of Lansingburgh. A lifelong Troy resident, he attended Lansingburgh High School. Mr. Reynolds was a landscaper and construction laborer for various companies over the past several years. He previously worked for the former Behr-Manning Company in Watervliet. Warren was a member of the Schenectady ADK and had climbed many of the Adirondack Mountains. He loved the outdoors, his canoe trips and all animals. Survivors in addition to his parents include a daughter, Tammy L. Reynolds of Troy; two sons, Randy S. and Ryan J. Reynolds, both of Waterford; a grandson, Jonathan Verhagen of Troy; a sister, Linda M. Reynolds of Va.; and his loving friend and companion, Theresa Minkler of Troy. TROY Albert F. Steininger, 88, died Sunday, June 13, 2004 at Van Rensselaer Manor. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Andrew and Hedwig Steininger. He was a graduate of Troy High School and was employed by Cohoes American prior to entering the service during World War II. Mr. Steininger served as a radio operator in the United States Air Force from 1942 to 1945 in the 489th Bomb Group, a part of the Eighth Air Force. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the EAME Ribbon with four Bronze Stars. He flew anti-sub patrol, escorting convoys from New York to England, flew two missions on D-Day and completed a tour of missions in the European Theatre. He finished his tour flying B-24's from Salt Lake City via Brazil to England, later converting crews to B-29's as he awaited serving in the Pacific when the war ended. Following the war, he was employed as a pressman by the Knickerbocker News and the Times Union, retiring after 35 years of service. He was a founding member of the Troy Ski Club and belonged to many other area ski clubs over the years, most recently with the 70 Plus Ski Club. He was a member of the Troy Elks and a former member of Germania Hall, Albany Camera Club and the Cohoes American Seniors. He also participated in the New York Senior Games in swimming, track and field, winning medals. He was a hunter and fisherman. Survivors include a brother, Andrew Steininger of Troy. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, Louise Farney, Joseph Steininger, Rose Raymond and Edward Steininger. The funeral will be on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Daniel D.
