CANAAN, N.Y. Leonard P. Baker, 60, died on Monday, June 14, 2004 at his daughter's residence in Canaan surrounded by his loving family. Born in Albany, he was the son of Ivan Baker of Nassau and the late Florence Mildred Rendo Baker. Leonard lived most of his life in the Castleton, N.Y. area before moving to St. Augustine, Fla. in 1991. In his early years, he was a driver for Staats Express and Red Star Express. Later he owned and operated the 9 & 20 Gulf Service Station. He also worked as a cook at various restaurants prior to moving to Fla. In Fla., he worked at Lyons Machine Shop as a machine operator. He was an active member at Grace Bible Chapel where he was appreciated for his positive attitude as well as his keen and quick wit. His faith was expressed through serving the homeless and being a mentor in the local AA program. He was father of Renee Fuhlbrigge of Canaan, N.Y., Leonard Baker of Castleton, N.Y., Willard Baker of Salem, N.Y., Shane Baker of Schuylerville, N.Y., Nikka Baker of Argyle, N.Y. and Melissa Baker of Hudson Falls, N.Y.; brother of Larry Baker of Atlanta, Ga., Nadine Tanner of Defreestville, N.Y., Diane Rieck of Nassau, N.Y., Ellen Honsinger of Castleton, N.Y., David Baker of Amsterdam, N.Y., Gary Baker of Ghent, N.Y. and the late Mark Baker; also survived by seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Utica, N.Y. on October 10, 1930, the son of James and Kathryn (Lloyd) Benton. He had resided in Delmar and Clarksville, N.Y. until recently relocating to Gardner. He was a 1948 graduate of Hartford High School, New Hartford, N.Y., and then graduated from Syracuse University. Mr. Benton proudly served his country as a corporal in the Korean War with the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He was retired after many years from the Getty Oil Company and the Oil Fuel Institute of Central New York in 2003. He was a member of many organizations in Delmar, N.Y. including the American Legion Post #1040, the V.F.W Post #3185, a member of the Masonic Nocturnal Lodge #1137 and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Delmar for many years. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Gardner. He leaves his wife of 51 years, whom he married on May 23, 1953, Carol J. (Benas) Benton of Gardner; two sons, James Benton of Garner and Jonathan Benton of Falls Church, Va.; a daughter, Kathryn Benton of Alameda, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Nancy Benton of Sandwich, N.H.; and nine grandchildren. Born in Watervliet, he was the son of the late Stephen and Helena Napolitano Bodo. He was raised and educated in Watervliet and attended the University of Chicago. He was a US Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre for three years. He was employed at the Watervliet Arsenal for many years as a master electrician before retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Watervliet VFW Post #729, the Watervliet A.O.H. and was a communicant of Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Watervliet. Survivors include his wife, Carole A. Bodo; his children, Cheryl, Stephen and Jami Bodo, all of Watervliet, and Jeryl (Raymond III) Hess of Latham; and his sister, Frances Coons of Casa Mesa, Calif. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael, Mindy, Edward, Stephen, Alexzander, Raymond IV, Richard, Jeremey and Kaitlyn. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren. Born in New York City on May 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Ernest and Eunice Gates. He was raised in Port Henry, N.Y. of the Adirondack Region and graduated from Port Henry High. He moved to Albany in the early 1960s and was a graduate of Hudson Valley Technical Institute of Troy and received his B.S. from Oswego State University and his master's of science from SUNY at Albany. Norman Gates was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was not only an avid sportsman but an impressive record-breaking athlete, the first inductee into the HVCC Hall of Fame, known to many as Norm POPS Gates in reference to his shooting ability. He played briefly with the Harlem Globetrotters in 1948 but chose family over a sports career at the time. He played on various semi-pro football teams, scouted and reported to our own New York Giants training camp. Once again, his career was interrupted, this time by war, but he still took this opportunity to showcase his talent by becoming a key member of the Munich Basketball Squad in Germany. He emotionally summed up his own sports experiences by saying, Basketball is my fame, but Football was my game. Mr. Gates earned his special education certification from Russell Sage College in Albany and started his career as an educator teaching industrial arts at Phillip Livingston Middle School and School #20. He loved being involved with youth so much that he became one of the directors of the Lincoln Park Summer Program in 1965, never missing a season in over 38 years. Mr. Gates spent approximately 24 years at Hackett Middle School as an assistant principal where he was greatly respected and looked up to by his colleagues and the kids who equally impacted his life as well as his impacted many of theirs. Mr Gates retired in 1992. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed much time in his garden and could often be found about town and surrounded by his friends at the Elbow Room. Mr. Gates was greatly loved and will be tremendously missed by many. Gilson Jr., 87, of Kingsway Arms Nursing Home, formerly of Clifton Park Rd., died peacefully Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at Ellis Hospital after a brief illness. Born July 11, 1916 in Houghton, Mich., Mr. Gilson graduated Albany High School in 1933 and received a Regent Scholarship to Cornell University where he obtained a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He was also a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he achieved the rank of major. He served as an advisor to the Chinese Combat Command in 1945, successfully training Chinese troops to repel invasion from the Japanese. He was highly decorated and obtained several medals such as the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. Mr. Gilson worked for General Electric for over 40 years, retiring in 1979. He was manager of foreign manufacture and design coordination of steam turbine generator division. Mr. Gilson was a member of the ELFUN Society, Turbine Supervisor's Association, G.E. Quarter Century Club, charter member of the Niskayuna Lions, recent member of Retired Men's Fraternity and a former member of the Edison Club. Survivors by two sons, Wesley Jack (Fran) Gilson III of Schenectady, Robert W. (Jennifer) Gilson of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Sandra Anne (Richard) Dietlein of Colonie, Pamela E. Dorothy graduated from St. Agnes Grammar School and Cohoes High School. She was employed briefly by the Locomotive in Schenectady prior to her marriage and, in later years, she worked briefly as a lunch room monitor for the Cohoes School District. Dorothy was a member of St. Agnes Parish and later Holy Trinity Parish her entire life. Dot loved to vacation with her husband at Old Orchard Beach in the summers and spending time with her family. In later years, her grandchildren and then her great-grandchildren brought her much joy. She was born in Esperance and was the last remaining of eight children to the late Zachariah and Olive Ruso Smith. She was a graduate of Albany Business College. Alice had worked for the New York State Conservation Department before becoming office manager of Hedrick Roofing Co., a family business started by her husband and her sons. She was longtime member of McKownville United Methodist Church where she served in the choir for over twenty years, was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Woman's Association. She was a member of the Guilderland Senior Citizens. Alice enjoyed taking day trips and trips to Hawaii and California. Alice was predeceased in 1982 by her beloved husband, Ivan R. Hedrick Sr., her son Ivan R. Hedrick Jr. in April of 2004 and her siblings, Emma Conover, Jessie Vunk, Leona Tallmadge, Zachariah Jr., Leroy, Raymond and Leland Smith. She is the beloved mother of Dorilee A. Stilsing and her husband Harold of Guilderland, Colin D. Hedrick and his wife Patricia of Castleton. Mother-in-law of Carol Hedrick of Guilderland. She was the wife of the late Julius Muffson, Albany civic leader and prominent attorney and the wife of the late well respected Dr. Merton Hershman of Schenectady. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Lizan of New York City and a stepson, Richard Hershman of Florida. Born in Trenton N.J., she was a graduate of Rider College and moved to Albany to manage the Joyce Clothing Stores. In 1965 she was appointed to a four year term as New York State representative to the board of directors of the National Jewish Welfare Board after which she served for 16 years as a member at large of the Executive Committee of the Woman's Organizations Services. She chaired the Jewish Welfare Board armed services organization at the Veteran's Hospital in Albany for 40 years. She was the president of the Albany section of the National Council of Jewish Women, and the vice president of the Albany Auxiliary Jewish Home for the Aged in Troy. She was the member of the board of directors of the Albany Leukemia Society and the member of the board of directors of St. Agnes School. She established the Women's Service League of the Albany Jewish Community Center where she enjoyed a long career of volunteer service to the center and also to the Sisterhood of Congregation Temple Beth Emeth. She had a great zest for life and cared deeply for all her friends and family and selflessly devoted her life to the benefit of others. Mrs. Ellen Darby Livingston, 92, a resident of Cambridge Guest Home for Adults, died on Tuesday morning, June 15, 2004 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt. Mrs. Livingston was born on April 7, 1912 in Alburg, Vt., the daughter of Aubrey Wells and Grace (Cheeseman) Darby. After her mother's death in 1915, she was raised by her beloved stepmother, Hattie Lessor. Ellen graduated from business college in Burlington, Vt. and was employed there by Green Mountain Power Co. and UVM. She later worked for many years as an accountant in the Tri-City, N.Y. where she resided with her family. In September of 1937, Ellen married Milton C. Livingston. Mr. Livingston died in 1996. Their son, genealogist Darby Gary Livingston, died in September of 2002. She was also predeceased by a brother, Arthur Darby. A dedicated homemaker and devoted Christian, Mrs. Livingston enjoyed her friends and antiques, retaining a sharp intellect to the end of her long illness. She was a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants and Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include her nephew, Alan Darby of Alburg, Vt.; grandnieces, Charity Darby, Heather Darby, Tracy Rossi, Nancy Davis, Louise Davis and Constance Merriman; cousins, Marjorie Lessor of N.H., Paul E. and Priscilla Virtue of Cambridge, N.Y., Don B. and Nancy H. Otis of Manchester, Vt.; also special friends, Ruth Rudd of Hoosick, N.Y. and Dr. Michael J. Welther of Arlington, Vt. Mlodzianowski, Susan SCHENECTADY Susan Mlodzianowski died at home Saturday, June 12, 2004 after a long battle with breast cancer. Susan was a lifelong resident of Schenectady's Stockade. Susan was born in Schenectady in January of 1957. She is the daughter of Van Shanklin and the late Kathleen Cox Shanklin. Susan graduated from the Schenectady City Schools in 1975 and went on to earn a B.S. in nursing from Niagara University, class of 1978. Susan's nursing career took her to North Carolina, after graduation where she worked in labor and delivery at Duke Medical Center. She then moved to Lock Haven, Pa., with her husband Paul Mlodzianowski and was a floor nurse at Lock Haven Hospital. Upon moving back to Schenectady in 1982, she was a public health nurse for the City of Schenectady. Susan then became a Supervisor of the Public Health Nurses for the county of Albany's Health Department. Susan then moved her career to Bellevue Women's Hospital in Niskayuna, where she worked as a labor and delivery nurse. Susan then moved on to MVP Health Plan as a Supervisor of Case Managers, where she came in contact with the most supportive and compassionate group of people her family could ever hope for. Susan was active in many community activities. She opened her family home for the Stockade Association Walkabout, was on the committee for the Stockade Walkabout, volunteered her time at the Schenectady Schools and was an active member of the Schenectady Soccer Club and a big supporter of the Schenectady High School program. Her love for soccer was apparent in her vocal support of the high school team and her hard work with the Schenectady Soccer Club. Susan is survived by her husband of 24 years, Paul Mlodzianowski; two beautiful sons, Jason Mlodzianowski and Joshua Mlodzianowski, her father Van Shanklin and his wife Mary Kelly Shanklin of Glenville; sister of Elliot W. Mrs. Nilsen was the daughter of the late Lee and Mary Miller Carey and the loving wife of Norman R. Nilsen Sr. Mrs. Nilsen grew up in Chatham, N.Y. and graduated from Chatham High School. Mrs. Nilsen moved to Nassau in 1964. She was a homemaker and for a time, secretary to Bob Whitney, Town Supervisor. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church where she was a choir member, the Festival of Praise Choir, a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation, being a direct descendant of a Civil War soldier. She had many hobbies and interests including Civil War history, genealogy, music, sewing and lots of travel. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Nilsen is survived by her son, Norman R. Nilsen Jr. of Nassau; two daughters, Leigh C. Nilsen of Pittsfield, Mass. and Lynn Gleason of Glendale, Ariz.; two sisters, Ruth Landry and Doreen McGivern, both of Pittsfield, Mass. Parham, 94, completed his life journey at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center on June 14, 2004 with his loving wife, Shirley, daughter, Sandy, and two dear friends by his side. Born in Knoxville, Tenn., Tom last was employed by Health Research, Inc. as executive director and then as an independent contractor from 1971 to 1988. His career included manager of Coopers and Librand, and Booz, Allen and Hamilton, treasurer of United Artists and consultant to American President Lines, International Minerals and Chemicals Corp. and Stanford Research Institute. Tom was a graduate of the University of Tenn. with degrees in finance and accounting. He was past president of San Francisco and Albany Chapters of Financial Executives Institute, active member of New Scotland Kiwanis Club, first tenor of Mendelsohn Club, treasurer and session member of New Scotland Presbyterian Church and board member and trust administrator of the Capital District Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was founding president of the Motion Pictures Industry Controllers Association. Tom loved gardening, traveling, wintering in Texas, singing in church choirs, doctors' appointments, working and people. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Shirley; sons, Thomas Parham Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn. and Harold J. Bisher and wife, Bobbie, of Hendersonville, Tenn.; daughters, Dorinda E. Trouteaud and husband, Robert, of Stone Mountain, Ga., Sue Anne Bisher and partner Judie L. Ince, of Kingsland, Texas and Sandra L. Polsonilli of Voorheesville, N.Y. A member of the Assumption-St. Paul Church in Mechanicville, she also belonged to the Rosary Altar Society, taught religious education and was a den mother for the church's Cub Scouts years ago. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Frank Santagato, who died June 3, 2001; also a son, Anthony Santagato and granddaughter, Monique Santagato. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Marilyn Santagato of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Santagato of Ushers; three grandchildren, Lynne Sommer and Frank B. Welsh, 83, of Crystal Lake and Fort Myers, Fla., died at his Crystal Lake home on Monday, June 14, 2004. Mr. Welsh was born on December 9, 1920, in Lochgelly, Scotland, a son of James and Rosemary Connell Welsh. He was married to Catherine Marshalsey on December 30, 1944 and they immigrated to the United States in 1947. While in Scotland, Mr. Welsh was a coal miner and, after coming to the U.S., he was employed as a custodian by the New York City Board of Education for 32 years, retiring in 1980. Surviving Mr. Welsh are daughters and spouses, Rosemary and John Scarry of Levittown, L.I., Eileen and Bob Hopwood of Fla.; a son, Ray Welsh of Westerlo, N.Y.; companion, Vivian Smith; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Zimmerman, 80, died Monday, June 14, 2004 at the Orange City Nursing & Rehabilitation. Center in DeBary, Fla. Mr. Zimmerman was born in Albany and lived here all his life until moving to Florida 20 years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was employed for many years as a sprinkler fitter, most recently by the Grinnell Co. of Albany. He was a member of the Andrew Scully VFW Post in Albany and of the Guilderland Elks Club. Mr. Zimmerman was the husband of the late Shirley Steele Zimmerman. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia F. Smith of Westmere; his sister, Gladys Rings of Westmere; his grandchildren, Robert (Mary) Foertsch of Esperance, N.Y. and Tammy (Andrew) Teal of Guilderland, N.Y.; his great-grandson, Cody Scott Teal; by several nieces and nephews.
