AURORA, N.Y. Clyde E. Cole, 95, formerly of Main Street, Aurora, died June 15, 2004 at Mercy Health and Rehabilitation Center, Auburn. Mr. Cole was born in Springfield, Mo., the son of the late Clarence E. and Anna L. Askey Cole and was a communicant of Saint Patrick's Church in Aurora. He was a graduate of West High School, Rochester, N.Y. and then attended Ithaca College receiving his BS in HPER (Health, Physical Education, and Recreation). He continued his education at Columbia University graduating in 1943 with a masters degree in education administration. He also attended Cornell University and SUNY Albany to continue his doctoral studies. Mr. Cole was previously employed as a HPER teacher at Oxford Academy & Central School and served as supervising principal from 1936-1946. From 1946-1951 he was an associate dean of HPER at Ithaca College. In 1951, he became the associate director of HPER Division of the NYS Education Dept. until his retirement in 1971. He was a member of Rotary International, CSEA/AFSME, DELTA KAPPA Advisor at Ithaca College and the NYS Assoc. of Administrators of Health Science where he served as president. He was also a member of the NYS High School Officials Assoc. He's had many awards presented to him throughout his career which include the Ithaca College Distinguished Alumni in 1984. He was inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame and the NYS College Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame. He also received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award from Rotary International, along with several other service awards from the NYSAHPER. In 1964, Mr. Cole established the NYS Invitational Clyde Cole Wrestling Tournament, Oxford, N.Y. Surviving him are his wife of 68 years, Pauline Coon Cole; one son, Thomas A. Cole and his wife Dale of Mendon, N.Y.; one daughter Patricia A. Cole Rogers of Aurora; four grandchildren, Patricia Nolan of Camillus, N.Y., Michele Rogers of Holbrook, N.Y., Kathleen Cramer and her husband, Patrick of Penfield, N.Y. and Michael Cole and his fiance, Julie Mitchell of Arlington, Va.; one great-grandson, John Thomas Cramer of Penfield. Mr Cole was predeceased by his two brothers, Jack and Allen Cole. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 21, 2004 at Saint Patrick's Church, Main Street, Aurora at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Donald Curtiss, celebrant. She lived briefly at the Terrace at Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center in Troy. Helen was born October 8, 1914 in Brooklyn and spent her childhood there. As a young woman, Helen worked for Macy's and for a New York City publishing company. She also worked part time for the Massapequea Park Schools. She married and was a homemaker on Long Island before retiring to Daytona Beach, Fla. and then returning to live in the Northeast in 1994. Helen was also a member of the Elk's Club in New Smyrna Beach while living in Fla. Helen was a valiant caregiver to her late husband, father and mother-in-law. Helen was predeceased by her husband, Frederick P. Dohn, and sister, Henrietta Groen, and brothers, Charles, Fred and William Bours. Proud mother of three children, Harvey K. Published in the Albany Times Union on 6/18/2004. Gates, Norman John ALBANY Norman John Gates passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 15, 2004. Born in New York City on May 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Ernest and Eunice Gates. He was raised in Port Henry, N.Y. of the Adirondack Region and graduated from Port Henry High. He moved to Albany in the early 1960s and was a graduate of Hudson Valley Technical Institute of Troy and received his B.S. from Oswego State University and his master's of science from SUNY at Albany. Norman Gates was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was not only an avid sportsman but an impressive record-breaking athlete, the first inductee into the HVCC Hall of Fame, known to many as Norm POPS Gates in reference to his shooting ability. He played briefly with the Harlem Globetrotters in 1948 but chose family over a sports career at the time. He played on various semi-pro football teams, scouted and reported to our own New York Giants training camp. Once again, his career was interrupted, this time by war, but he still took this opportunity to showcase his talent by becoming a key member of the Munich Basketball Squad in Germany. He emotionally summed up his own sports experiences by saying, Basketball is my fame, but Football was my game. Mr. Gates earned his special education certification from Russell Sage College in Albany and started his career as an educator teaching industrial arts at Phillip Livingston Middle School and School #20. He loved being involved with youth so much that he became one of the directors of the Lincoln Park Summer Program in 1965, never missing a season in over 38 years. Mr. Gates spent approximately 24 years at Hackett Middle School as an assistant principal where he was greatly respected and looked up to by his colleagues and the kids who equally impacted his life as well as his impacted many of theirs. Mr Gates retired in 1992. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed much time in his garden and could often be found about town and surrounded by his friends at the Elbow Room. Mr. Gates was greatly loved and will be tremendously missed by many. Gilson Jr., 87, of Kingsway Arms Nursing Home, formerly of Clifton Park Rd., died peacefully Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at Ellis Hospital after a brief illness. Born July 11, 1916 in Houghton, Mich., Mr. Gilson graduated Albany High School in 1933 and received a Regent Scholarship to Cornell University where he obtained a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He was also a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he achieved the rank of major. He served as an advisor to the Chinese Combat Command in 1945, successfully training Chinese troops to repel invasion from the Japanese. He was highly decorated and obtained several medals such as the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. Mr. Gilson worked for General Electric for over 40 years, retiring in 1979. He was manager of foreign manufacture and design coordination of steam turbine generator division. Mr. Gilson was a member of the ELFUN Society, Turbine Supervisor's Association, G.E. Quarter Century Club, charter member of the Niskayuna Lions, recent member of Retired Men's Fraternity and a former member of the Edison Club. Survivors by two sons, Wesley Jack (Fran) Gilson III of Schenectady, Robert W. (Jennifer) Gilson of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Sandra Anne (Richard) Dietlein of Colonie, Pamela E. Born in Albany, Hazel lived in Voorheesville for 17 years before moving to Schenectady in 1992. She worked for several years for the New York State Department of Education prior to her marriage in 1962. Hazel was the wife of Donald J. Hayes, 79, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at Albany Memorial Hospital. Born in Utica, he was the son of the late Harry and Joan Carney Hayes Sr. Mr. Hayes was a 1942 graduate of Albany High School and 1946 graduate of Princeton University. He served in the US Army during World War II in the European Theatre in the 71st Infantry Division and was honorably discharged. Mr. Hayes earned his law degree from Albany Law School and had been a practicing attorney in Albany since the 1950s. He was recognized by the Shoah Foundation for his role in the liberation of a German labor camp in Austria. Mr. Hayes was a former member of the board of trustees for both St. Gregory's School for Boys and the Fort Orange Club. Mr. Hayes was the husband of Louise Brierley Hayes; father of Harry R. Hayes III (Darryl) of Clifton Park, Elizabeth H. Witten (Richard E.) of Mamaroneck, N.Y. and Christopher C. Hayes (Elisabeth O.) of Chevy Chase, Md.; grandfather of Annie, Alex and Jeffrey Witten, Russell and Raymond Hayes, Chris, Andrew and Francis Hayes; brother of Esther Hayes Otis of Decatur, Ga. and the late John C. Hayes, Rev. William D. NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. Reverend William D. Hayes, 71, of New Hartford, died on Friday, June 11, 2004 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. He had moved to New Hartford from Ghent where he had retired after serving the community of Lake Placid as the Rector of St. Eustace Church for 24 years. He was born on May 9, 1933 in Albany, N.Y., the son of the late E. Perren and Gladys Dettman Hayes. He married Constance Hallenbeck on September 4, 1954, in Hudson, N.Y. He graduated from Milne School in Albany and Union College. He attended General Theological Seminary in New York City, graduating in 1968. Then he went to St. George's Church in Schenectady for a year where he was ordained as a priest on December 14, 1968. He then moved to Lake Placid to become the rector of St. Eustace Church. Father Bill spent his whole life serving his community. He was the rector of St. Eustace Church in Lake Placid for 20 years and touched many lives through his ministry. He was active in Lake Placid community affairs since arriving in 1969. Among Father Bill's activities, chaplain to several New York State Prisons, member of the Lake Placid Kiwanis Club, member of the Lake Placid Ambulance Association, member of the Ethics Committee of the Cell Science Center of Lake Placid, chairman and board member of Camelot, a St. Francis Academy Home, Lake Placid Fire Department chaplain, prime advocate in the development of Greenwood Apartment Housing for seniors and handicapped and chairman of the Religious Affairs Committee for the 1980 Olympics. He also helped establish the Lake Placid Ministerial Association to enhance ecumenicism. Rev. Hayes said prayer at the 1980 Olympics opening ceremony, which was the first time it ever occurred during the official program. He was inducted into the Lake Placid Hall of Fame on October 4, 1990. Many people will remember his kind words during very difficult times and his comforting ways with people. He touched so many lives, both in the community of Lake Placid and elsewhere. He inspired many people through his work with church and his activities at Camelot. He routinely visited the sick of all faiths within the community making his rounds to the Saranac Lake Hospital, Lake Placid Hospital, Uihlein Mercy Center and the Greenwood Apartments. He is survived by his wife, Constance, of New Hartford; his children, Anne Yoss and her husband Eric, of New Hartford; William D. Hayes, Jr. and Kathleen, of New Lebanon, N.Y.; his grandchildren, David, Sarah and Philip Yoss, all of New Hartford, Kayla and Rachel Hayes, both of New Lebanon. He is also survived by a brother, Rev. E. Perren Hayes, Jr. and Geraldine, Peekskill, N.Y. There will be a memorial service at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in New Hartford and at the Cathedral of All Saints, in Albany, N.Y. at a future time to be announced. Hedrick, Alice S. GUILDERLAND Alice S. Hedrick, 93, of Guilderland, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital. She was born in Esperance and was the last remaining of eight children to the late Zachariah and Olive Ruso Smith. She was a graduate of Albany Business College. Alice had worked for the New York State Conservation Department before becoming office manager of Hedrick Roofing Co., a family business started by her husband and her sons. She was longtime member of McKownville United Methodist Church where she served in the choir for over twenty years, was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Woman's Association. She was a member of the Guilderland Senior Citizens. Alice enjoyed taking day trips and trips to Hawaii and California. Alice was predeceased in 1982 by her beloved husband, Ivan R. Hedrick Sr., her son Ivan R. Hedrick Jr. in April of 2004 and her siblings, Emma Conover, Jessie Vunk, Leona Tallmadge, Zachariah Jr., Leroy, Raymond and Leland Smith. She is the beloved mother of Dorilee A. Stilsing and her husband Harold of Guilderland, Colin D. Hedrick and his wife Patricia of Castleton. Mother-in-law of Carol Hedrick of Guilderland. Grandmother of Michael and David Hedrick, Deborah Link, Michelle Christie, Shawn Hedrick, Linda Spring, Lisa Ort, Cheryl, Lloyd and Jenise Stilsing. She was the wife of the late Julius Muffson, Albany civic leader and prominent attorney and the wife of the late well respected Dr. Merton Hershman of Schenectady. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Lizan of New York City and a stepson, Richard Hershman of Florida. Born in Trenton N.J., she was a graduate of Rider College and moved to Albany to manage the Joyce Clothing Stores. In 1965 she was appointed to a four year term as New York State representative to the board of directors of the National Jewish Welfare Board after which she served for 16 years as a member at large of the Executive Committee of the Woman's Organizations Services. She chaired the Jewish Welfare Board armed services organization at the Veteran's Hospital in Albany for 40 years. She was the president of the Albany section of the National Council of Jewish Women, and the vice president of the Albany Auxiliary Jewish Home for the Aged in Troy. She was the member of the board of directors of the Albany Leukemia Society and the member of the board of directors of St. Agnes School. She established the Women's Service League of the Albany Jewish Community Center where she enjoyed a long career of volunteer service to the center and also to the Sisterhood of Congregation Temple Beth Emeth. She had a great zest for life and cared deeply for all her friends and family and selflessly devoted her life to the benefit of others. Mlodzianowski, Susan SCHENECTADY Susan Mlodzianowski died at home Saturday, June 12, 2004 after a long battle with breast cancer. Susan was a lifelong resident of Schenectady's Stockade. Susan was born in Schenectady in January of 1957. She is the daughter of Van Shanklin and the late Kathleen Cox Shanklin. Susan graduated from the Schenectady City Schools in 1975 and went on to earn a B.S. in nursing from Niagara University, class of 1978. Susan's nursing career took her to North Carolina, after graduation where she worked in labor and delivery at Duke Medical Center. She then moved to Lock Haven, Pa., with her husband Paul Mlodzianowski and was a floor nurse at Lock Haven Hospital. Upon moving back to Schenectady in 1982, she was a public health nurse for the City of Schenectady. Susan then became a Supervisor of the Public Health Nurses for the county of Albany's Health Department. Susan then moved her career to Bellevue Women's Hospital in Niskayuna, where she worked as a labor and delivery nurse. Susan then moved on to MVP Health Plan as a Supervisor of Case Managers, where she came in contact with the most supportive and compassionate group of people her family could ever hope for. Susan was active in many community activities. She opened her family home for the Stockade Association Walkabout, was on the committee for the Stockade Walkabout, volunteered her time at the Schenectady Schools and was an active member of the Schenectady Soccer Club and a big supporter of the Schenectady High School program. Her love for soccer was apparent in her vocal support of the high school team and her hard work with the Schenectady Soccer Club. Susan is survived by her husband of 24 years, Paul Mlodzianowski; two beautiful sons, Jason Mlodzianowski and Joshua Mlodzianowski, her father Van Shanklin and his wife Mary Kelly Shanklin of Glenville; sister of Elliot W. Shanklin and wife Diane of Altamont, his three special children, daughters Jane and Claire and their son Bryan; brother-in-law Ronald Mlodzianowski of N.J.; sister-in-law of Joseph Mlodzianowski and wife Mary of Rotterdam and their two beautiful daughters Jennifer and Amy Mlodzianowski; a sister-in-law and childhood best friend, Cheryl Russell and husband Gary of Schenectady and their thoughtful son Justin Friello; Cathy Starmer of Syracuse, her best friend from college who helped Susan, Paul, Joshua and Jason with Susan's last hours together, We love you Cathy; Nancy Hunter, a friend and angel that made Susan's last week here easier for the whole family, We love you Nancy and the staff of friends at MVP Health Plan, too numerous to mention, that have shown such support and compassion to Susan and her family, more support and love than can be imagined. WEST SAND LAKE Robert I. Nichols, 76, of Route 150, West Sand Lake, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy after a long illness. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Sanford Nichols and Margaret (Brack) Nichols and husband for 54 years of Eleanor Dick Nichols. He was raised in Rensselaer and had resided in the Burden Lake and West Sand Lake areas for over 40 years and was educated at Rensselaer schools. Mr. Nichols was a self-employed home builder for 40 years, retiring 14 years ago. He was a member of East Greenbush Junior Chamber of Commerce and a Marine Corp veteran of World War II. He loved to hunt and fish and was an avid fan of the Yankees, Giants and Rangers and never missed a game. Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, William Nichols (Jean) of Calif., James Nichols (Tracy) of Stephentown, Ralph Nichols (Yoshemi) of Ohio and Robert Nichols (Paula) of Stephentown; a daughter, Susan White (John) of Red Hook, N.Y.; a brother, Frank Nichols of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Dorothy Hewitt (Jack) of Long Island; 11 grandchildren, Michelle, James, Jeremy, Jenny, Greg, Noel, Brian, Zachary, Drew, Luke and Jake; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Nilsen, 65, of Lyons Lake Road, died Friday, June 11, 2004 at Springside Nursing Home in Pittsfield, Mass. Mrs. Nilsen was the daughter of the late Lee and Mary Miller Carey and the loving wife of Norman R. Nilsen Sr. Mrs. Nilsen grew up in Chatham, N.Y. and graduated from Chatham High School. Mrs. Nilsen moved to Nassau in 1964. She was a homemaker and for a time, secretary to Bob Whitney, Town Supervisor. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church where she was a choir member, the Festival of Praise Choir, a Girl Scout leader and a member of the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation, being a direct descendant of a Civil War soldier. She had many hobbies and interests including Civil War history, genealogy, music, sewing and lots of travel. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Nilsen is survived by her son, Norman R. Nilsen Jr. of Nassau; two daughters, Leigh C. Nilsen of Pittsfield, Mass. and Lynn Gleason of Glendale, Ariz.; two sisters, Ruth Landry and Doreen McGivern, both of Pittsfield, Mass. Mrs. Nilsen is also survived by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mrs. Nilsen was the foster mother of Alirio Castaneda of Columbia, South America. Welsh, 83, of Crystal Lake and Fort Myers, Fla., died at his Crystal Lake home on Monday, June 14, 2004. Mr. Welsh was born on December 9, 1920, in Lochgelly, Scotland, a son of James and Rosemary Connell Welsh. He was married to Catherine Marshalsey on December 30, 1944 and they immigrated to the United States in 1947. While in Scotland, Mr. Welsh was a coal miner and, after coming to the U.S., he was employed as a custodian by the New York City Board of Education for 32 years, retiring in 1980. Surviving Mr. Welsh are daughters and spouses, Rosemary and John Scarry of Levittown, L.I., Eileen and Bob Hopwood of Fla.; a son, Ray Welsh of Westerlo, N.Y.; companion, Vivian Smith; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. DEBARY, Fla. Robert H. Zimmerman, 80, died Monday, June 14, 2004 at the Orange City Nursing & Rehabilitation. Center in DeBary, Fla. Mr. Zimmerman was born in Albany and lived here all his life until moving to Florida 20 years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was employed for many years as a sprinkler fitter, most recently by the Grinnell Co. of Albany. He was a member of the Andrew Scully VFW Post in Albany and of the Guilderland Elks Club. Mr. Zimmerman was the husband of the late Shirley Steele Zimmerman. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia F.
