Aucompaugh, Velna ESPERANCE Velna Byrne Aucompaugh, 76, of Burtonville Road passed away Thursday, June 17, 2004 at her home. Velna lived in Esperance most of her life. She had been employed at the Schenectady General Electric Company, the former Big N in Schenectady and was an aide at the Cornerstone Christian Academy in Sloansville for over 12 years. Velna was a member of the Schoharie Valley Gospel Church in Sloansville for over 30 years. She was active in prison ministry through the Schoharie Valley Gospel Church at Tryon Girls' Correctional Facility in Johnstown. Velna was a communicant of Esperance-Sloansville United Methodist Church. She devoted the last six years of her life to the care of her Little Lamb, Austyn Bivins. Around the clock care was given to her by her four grandsons, Jeremy Smith, Daniel Bivins, Benjamin Bivins and Michael Bivins and Amanda Boss. Her late husband, Franklin J. Aucompaugh, died October 31, 1999. Velna is survived by her beloved sons, Terry Aucompaugh of Albany, Frank Aucompaugh of Burlington, N.C., Leland Aucompaugh of Killeen, Texas and Jeffrey Aucompaugh of Berne; her beloved daughters, Barbara Smith of Esperance and Belinda Ryder of Cohoes; her brothers, Carl and Cecil Byrne of Rockwood, N.Y.; her sister, Sarah Goodnow of Pattersonville; 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter, Elaine G. Dott; her brothers, Robert, Hubert and Timothy Byrne, and her sister, Jessie Pitcher. A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Schoharie Valley Gospel Church in Sloansville. He was born in Schenectady on June 21, 1920, the son of the late Michele and Lucia DiCerbo. A graduate of Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady, he attended St. Charles Seminary, Baltimore, Md. and completed his studies in philosophy and theology at St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, Md. He was ordained as a priest on June 15, 1946 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Albany by Most Rev. Edmund F. Gibbons. In 1955, he received a doctorate in Canon Law from Lateran University, Rome, Italy. Father DiCerbo first served as assistant pastor at St. Vincent de Paul, Albany. During his years in Albany, he served as chaplain at both St. Anne Institute and the College of St. Rose. Father Almerico was assigned as assistant pastor at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Delmar and St. Teresa of Avila, Albany. He later served as pastor at St. Joseph's, Little Falls, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Amsterdam, St. Patrick's, St. Johnsville and as administrator of St. Joseph Parish, West Winfield. After receiving his doctorate in Canon Law, he served as auditor, pro-synodal judge, synodal judge, defender of the bond, administrator of procedural cases and promoter of justice on the Diocesan Tribunal. Even after his retirement, he continued to serve until his health prevented him from doing so. Survivors include his stepmother, Luigia DiCerbo of Rotterdam; four sisters, Sister Antonia DiCerbo, CSJ of St. Joseph Provincal House, Latham, Margaret and her husband, Ralph DeRizzo, of Guilderland, Sister Elvira DiCerbo, MPF, of Haddonfield, N.J. and Lucia DiCerbo of Rotterdam; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Anna Marotta; and six brothers, Patrick, Arthur, Ulderico, Louis, Marcello and Alfonso DiCerbo. The Reception of the Body will be at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. There will be a viewing until 7:00 p.m. when Vespers will be celebrated. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11:00 a.m. Monday with Most Rev. Howard Hubbard, Bishop of Albany, as principal celebrant. Dohn, 89, of Pointview Drive died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at Samaritan Hospital, Troy. She lived briefly at the Terrace at Eddy Memorial Geriatric Center in Troy. Helen was born October 8, 1914 in Brooklyn and spent her childhood there. As a young woman, Helen worked for Macy's and for a New York City publishing company. She also worked part time for the Massapequea Park Schools. She married and was a homemaker on Long Island before retiring to Daytona Beach, Fla. and then returning to live in the Northeast in 1994. Helen was also a member of the Elk's Club in New Smyrna Beach while living in Fla. Helen was a valiant caregiver to her late husband, father and mother-in-law. Helen was predeceased by her husband, Frederick P. Dohn, and sister, Henrietta Groen, and brothers, Charles, Fred and William Bours. Proud mother of three children, Harvey K. Born in Troy, she was the daughter of the late Theodore Bayer Jr. and Ethel (Gillie) Bayer and wife of the late Abraham Dunn. She wintered in the Greater Tampa Bay, Fla. area and, for the past 17 years, resided in Malta and was a graduate of Troy High School, class of 1943, and attended Ohio State and Russell Sage College. Mrs. Dunn was employed in budget allocation for the State University Construction Fund, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Clifton Park and Waterford Senior Citizens and loved to play bridge, to travel, was an avid gardener and adored her grandchildren. She is survived by two sons, Davis James Fay (Laurie) of Menands and Jeffery Fay of Albany; a brother, Theodore J. Bayer (Jeanne) of Ballston Spa; a sister, Madeline G. Miller of St. Petersburg, Fla.; six grandchildren, Davis Coston Fay and Amanda Bayer Fay, both of Jackson, Wyo., and Jimmy, Jeffrey, Madeline and Abby Fay, all of Menands, and several nieces and nephews. Gilson Jr., 87, of Kingsway Arms Nursing Home, formerly of Clifton Park Rd., died peacefully Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at Ellis Hospital after a brief illness. Born July 11, 1916 in Houghton, Mich., Mr. Gilson graduated Albany High School in 1933 and received a Regent Scholarship to Cornell University where he obtained a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He was also a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he achieved the rank of major. He served as an advisor to the Chinese Combat Command in 1945, successfully training Chinese troops to repel invasion from the Japanese. He was highly decorated and obtained several medals such as the American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal. Mr. Gilson worked for General Electric for over 40 years, retiring in 1979. He was manager of foreign manufacture and design coordination of steam turbine generator division. Mr. Gilson was a member of the ELFUN Society, Turbine Supervisor's Association, G.E. Quarter Century Club, charter member of the Niskayuna Lions, recent member of Retired Men's Fraternity and a former member of the Edison Club. Survivors by two sons, Wesley Jack (Fran) Gilson III of Schenectady, Robert W. (Jennifer) Gilson of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Sandra Anne (Richard) Dietlein of Colonie, Pamela E. Hales, 76, of Route 385, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at the V.A. Hospital in Albany after a long illness. He was born in Guttenburg, N.J. on January 8, 1928 and was the son of the late Antone and Anna (Gaspar) Hales. Mr. Hales has been an area resident for over 75 years. He was a graduate of the Class of 1944 Athens High School. He served with the U.S. Army as a sergeant for 1950-1952. He owned Hales Brothers Building Contractors with his brother, William Hales. He was a member of the American Legion and the Athens Paddock Club. He loved gardening, baseball (he was a Mets fan), hunting and golfing. He also coached for the Little League in Athens and is a communicant of St. Patrick's Church of Athens. Survivors include his wife, Marlene A. (Spreckels) Hales of Brooklyn, Richard Hales and his wife, Cathlene, of Ill. and Carl Hales of Athens; two daughters, Sharon Hales of Scotia, Susan (Hales) McNaughton and her husband, Jeffrey of Selkirk; a brother, Frank Hales of Ala.; a sister, Elizabeth (Hales) Van Schaack of Athens; five grandchildren, Shaelynn, Norman, Vanessa, JaneAnn and Philip; a great-granddaughter, Isabel; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. MENANDS Harry R. Hayes, 79, died Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at Albany Memorial Hospital. Born in Utica, he was the son of the late Harry and Joan Carney Hayes Sr. Mr. Hayes was a 1942 graduate of Albany High School and 1946 graduate of Princeton University. He served in the US Army during World War II in the European Theatre in the 71st Infantry Division and was honorably discharged. Mr. Hayes earned his law degree from Albany Law School and had been a practicing attorney in Albany since the 1950s. He was recognized by the Shoah Foundation for his role in the liberation of a German labor camp in Austria. Mr. Hayes was a former member of the board of trustees for both St. Gregory's School for Boys and the Fort Orange Club. Mr. Hayes was the husband of Louise Brierley Hayes; father of Harry R. Hayes III (Darryl) of Clifton Park, Elizabeth H. Witten (Richard E.) of Mamaroneck, N.Y. and Christopher C. Hayes (Elisabeth O.) of Chevy Chase, Md.; grandfather of Annie, Alex and Jeffrey Witten, Russell and Raymond Hayes, Chris, Andrew and Francis Hayes; brother of Esther Hayes Otis of Decatur, Ga. and the late John C. A Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War, Kenneth was an avid gardener and dedicated worker at the Troy Community Gardens. He received his education in the Albany area and was a graduate of Albany High School, Class of 1965. He was a member of the Corporal William A. Dickerson VFW Post #8758 of Troy. In addition to his father, he is survived by two sons, Kenneth Jr. and Anthony; and a daughter, Charlene of Schenectady; four grandchildren also survive. His memory will also be cherished by an aunt, Edith Marble of Albany; two brothers; an uncle; and special friend and companion, Barbara Pettiway of Troy. Ruggiero, Sylvester Pasquale WYNANTSKILL Sylvester Pasquale Ruggiero, 77, of Wynantskill, formerly of Brandywine Avenue, Schenectady, at rest June 17, 2004 at his home. Born and educated in Schenectady, he was the son of the late Gorman and Christine Rogers. Mr. Ruggiero was employed for many years as a corrections officer at Sing Sing, Coxsackie, Comstack, and Wilton Correctional Facilities, retiring in 1982. He was also an owner, driver, trainer of Standard Bred harness horses, racing at Saratoga Harness and tracks throughout New England. He was a member of the Harness Horsemans Association. He is survived by his wife of 22 years Marion Hamilton; his children, Christine of Northville, Carmen of Lake George, Jo-Anne of Ballston Lake, Slyvester P. Jr. of Bedford, Mass., Gorman J. of Wycombe, Pa., Peter A. of Ballston Spa, Garrick of Lake Luzerne, Catherine of Vero Beach, Fla., Joseph R. of Greenfield Center, Marcus of Lake Luzerne, Christopher L. of Manchester, N.H., Jack M. Tanner, age 86, of Palm Beach Fla., formerly of Schenectady, died Friday, June 18, 2004 at the Chatsworth at PGA National Facility in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. after a lengthy illness. Mr. Tanner was born in NYC and resided in Schenectady until 1984 at which time he moved to Florida. He had been the proprietor of the Glenville Wine and Liquor Store in Glenville, N.Y. for many years. He was a former member and past President of Congregation Agudat Achim in Schenectady. He was a licensed pilot and a member of the Upper 15 Flying Club at the Albany County Airport. He was an avid bridge player and traveled extensively. He was married to Gertrude Hubal Tanner until her passing in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Sally Brown Tanner; a son, Marshall Tanner and his companion Ruth Tietz of Colonie; and a daughter Marilyn Tanner of Niskayuna; grandfather of Howard Tanner and his wife Debbie, Jordan Tanner and his wife Susan, Adam, Joshua and Elana Trudell. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
