BALLSTON LAKE Allen E. Caplowaith, 57, died on Thursday, October 7, 2004 at the Ellis Hospital in Schenectady surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 29, 1946 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and was the beloved son of Edith L. Sulzer Caplowaith of Margate, Fla. and the late Arthur Caplowaith. Mr. Caplowaith had lived in Ballston Lake for the past 11 years and was previously of Staten Island. He served as a U.S. Army veteran until his honorable discharge on February 12, 1968. He received the National Defense Medal and the Marksman Badge. Allen was a hearing officer for the NYS Office of Tax Appeals in Troy, N.Y. until his retirement in October of 2002. An accomplished photographer, Allen was the recipient of several awards for his work. He was a member of the Sportsman's Club of Clifton Park. Known for his dry humor and matter-of-fact personality, he will be dearly missed by his family and close friends. He was the beloved husband of Rosemary Brady Caplowaith; devoted father of Allison Caplowaith and Jason P. Caplowaith, both of Ballston Lake; caring brother of Roberta Tacher and Arlene (John) Perry, both of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; uncle of Joshua Shaatal of W. Palm Beach, Fla. Cassidy, Leocadia Betty SCHENECTADY Leocadia Betty Jakubowski Cassidy, 82, of Ward Ave., Schenectady, formerly of Eastern Ave., passed away peacefully at the Dutch Manor Nursing and Rehab Centre on October 7, 2004. Born in West Rutland, Vt. on March 6, 1922, Betty was a homemaker, communicant of St. Mary's Church and a past member of Ladies of the Elks in Schenectady. Beloved wife of the late John J. Cassidy whom she married on April 6, 1948 and passed away on October 18, 1986. Loving mother of Henry Cassidy and his wife Kathleen of Schenectady. Cherished grandmother of Mary Beth Cassidy of Guilderland and John J. Cassidy of Latham. Sister of the late Peter, Henry and Stanley Jakubowski, Mary Nejman, Stephanie and Regina Jakubowski. Chiappone, Joseph Joe GLENVILLE Joseph Joe H. Chiappone, 85, died peacefully in his home on October 7, 2004. Joe was born in N.Y.C. and raised in Brooklyn. He was a graduate of James Madison High School. He married Mary Morganelli in May 1943. During World War II, he served as an Army staff sergeant with the 771st tank destroyer battalion, Co. C. in Central Europe (Rhineland). For two years, he was the communication chief in charge of laying wires and keeping radios operating. His service citations and medals include the American Defense Service Medal, American Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He completed his service with the National Guard Reserves. After the war, Joe was employed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard until it's closing. He then worked as a telephone installer for AT&T-Verizon, in Manhattan until his retirement. Joe and Mary moved to Glenville in 1985 where they enjoyed activities with the Scotia-Glenville Seniors, and traveled with the Happy Wanderers. Joe volunteered as a driver of the Scotia-Glenville Senior Van. Joe enjoyed gardening and renovating his house. His artistic talent surfaced when he began refinishing religious statues for family, friends and others. His efforts made the statues look new again. He enjoyed time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a communicant of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Glenville. Joe is predeceased by his wife Mary; daughter, Josette Cordova; parents, Jennie (D'Angelo) and Henry Chiappone; brothers, Harry, Salvatore and Philip; sister, Frances Hernandez. Joe is survived by his daughters, Janet Messina of N.J., Joan (Rick) Von Ehr of Charlton; son-in-law, Richard Cordova of Pa.; sister, Rose (John) Puccio of N.J.; beloved grandchildren, Angela, Nicole, Drew, Megan, Jessica; great-granddaughter, Natalie; brother-in-law of Ray and Jean Koehne of Charlton; uncle and great-uncle to numerous nieces and nephews who affectionately called him Uncle Chip. COLONIE Arnold S. Henning, 88, of Beltrone Living Center in Colonie, died on Friday, October 8, 2004 at the Albany Medical Center. He was born on June 6, 1916 in Baltimore, Md. and was the son of the late Franklin W. and Hilda C. Sutton Henning. He was a graduate of Watervliet High School and the State University at Albany, where he received his degree in accounting. Later, Mr. Henning attended Siena College. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired as a national import specialist where he had been a customs inspector for the federal government in New York City. He was the husband of the late Eleanor A. Henning. He is the father of Mrs. Frank (Christine) Guggisberg of Waterford and Bernard Henning and his wife Nancy of Walworth, N.Y. and the late Sandra Lalla; brother of the late Winifred Boliver; grandfather of Chris Widay, John Guggisberg, Mark Henning and Kathleen O'Neill; also survived by eight great-grandchildren. DELMAR Raymond Francis Kalendek, 72, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, on October 6, 2004, peacefully closed his eyes at home and went to be with the Lord. Ray was an extremely devoted and loving family man. His life revolved around his family and his home. Always an active man, he took pleasure in many interests. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, reading, traveling, candle making, Yankee games and being Mr. Fix It. Most of all, he treasured time spent in the company of his family and his two dogs, Scruffy and Mandy. The tremendous loss and grief will be forever embedded in the hearts of those who love him. He leaves behind his wife, best friend and companion of 38 years, Patricia Brady Kalendek. He remains father and best dad in the world to Raymond G. Born July 6, 1932 in Albany, N.Y., Ray was the son of the late Raymond C. Kalendek and the late Antonina (Jane) Kalendek. He attended school at the former St. Ann's Academy. He served his country faithfully in Germany during the Korean War. After 27 years of employment with the Capital District Transportation Authority, he retired in 1996 as a supervisor/trainer. He held many offices in the Bethlehem Elks Lodge #2233 and was Past Exalted Ruler in 1985. He was a member of the American Legion Post #1040. At the church, she was a former Sunday school teacher and member of the altar guild as well as having worked with the youth group at the church. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, belonging to the Star of Liberty Chapter in Mechanicville and the former Ionic Chapter in Waterford. She is widow of the late William McClean. Ed retired from the Albany County Clerks Office over 30 years ago. Oppedisano died Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at the VA Medical Center after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Born in Albany, he graduated from the Cathedral Academy and went on to SUNY Albany, majoring in education. He was a former teacher at Albany High School and Ravena-Coeymans High School. He owned his own restaurant, Cairo Gardens, in Cairo, N.Y. and was also an area musician in his own band called the Manhattans. Joe retired from the New York State Department of Labor after more than 30 years of service. He was one of the original founders of the Capital District Regional Food Bank and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was the son of Mary Sgambellone Oppedisano and the late Joseph Oppedisano. He was the husband of the late JoAnn (Jodie) Conway Oppedisano; father of Joseph V. Oppedisano of Las Vegas, Nev. and Julie A. Wilson (Larry) of Slingerlands; grandfather of Gregory and Adam Wilson; brother of Rosemary Grieco, Antoinette Bosco, James Oppedisano, Jeannette Oppedisano, Richard Oppedisano (Rose), Loretta Kelly and Nancy Andre (Joseph); brother-in-law of Robert Conway; many nieces and nephews also survive. Rogan, Eugenia M. CLIFTON PARK Eugenia M. Rogan, 90, of Clifton Park and Worcester, N.Y., died peacefully October 6, 2004 surrounded by family. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John and Wanda Sawicz and the wife of the late Edward John Rogan. She was a loving and gentle wife, mother and grandmother. Her love of literature, art, music and nature served as an inspiration to all. Eugenia had a profound respect for humanity and all living things. She lived her life with quiet dignity and elegance. Eugenia is survived by six children, John Rogan and his wife Iris of Marysville, Calif., Eileen Klem and her husband Douglas of Charlotte, N.C., Christine McGurrin and her husband David of Clifton Park, Anne Rogan of Clifton Park, Edward Robert Rogan and his wife Jeri of Littleton, Colo. and Timothy Rogan and his wife Janice of Stockton, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Born in Albany, N.Y., Charles was the son of the late Charles W. and Margaret (Mahar) Tompkins. He graduated from the former Vincentian Institute and attended Siena College. Mr. Tompkins served as corporal in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 as a machine gun commander with the 1st Infantry Division in Europe, earning five battle stars, the Purple Heart, Bronze Arrowhead and Presidential Citation for the Normandy Invasion and the Belgium Four-a-Buerre for the Battle of the Bulge, from the King of Belgium. He was a sales representative for the Gillette Company for 15 years, a manufacturer's representative in the sporting goods industry, covering New York and the New England states and then worked for Drew Buick until his retirement in 1986. He was a life member of the D.A.V. and a member of the Elks Lodge. The beloved father of Patricia O'Malley and her husband Joseph, Nancy Hoffman and her husband Edward and Diane Murray and her husband William. Loving grandfather of Susan Deeley and her husband Paul, Christine Graham and her husband Charles, Cynthia Kaiser and her husband Joseph, William Charles Murray and his wife Sarah, Jonathan Murray and Laura Murray. Great-grandfather of Joseph Anthony Kaiser III, Kayla Elizabeth Graham, Emily Rachel Graham and Paul Joseph Deeley III. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Walsh, Ira (Brooks) TROY Ira Brooks Walsh, died surrounded by her family Wednesday evening, October 6, 2004 at Albany Medical Center after a long and courageous struggle with a serious illness. She was born in Ill. on December 3, 1935 to the late Charles and Daisy Williams Brooks. She is survived by her husband Anthony (Tony) Walsh and their daughter, Suzanne Elise Walsh. She was the sister of Raymond, Glenn and Chris Brooks, Marjorie Brooks and Ada Brooks Groff. Ira was predeceased by brothers, Paul and Donald Brooks. Mrs. Walsh was a scholar, teacher, and an outstanding member of her community. She began her career with baccalaureate studies at Monmouth College, master's studies at Syracuse University and doctoral studies at the University of Toronto, Canada where she co-authored a paper on Piaget and Koniberg with Dr. E.V. Sullivan. This was the first of many professional papers in a variety of fields including Feminist Black studies via the article The Black Woman's Dilemma. Her final paper was a collaborative effort with her husband and her daughter, which was presented at Oxford University, England. Her career in education began in Rockford, Ill. as a math teacher. She next went to SUNY Oswego as an assistant dean and then to the University of Portland where she earned the first of many awards and honors; a lifetime appointment as a Danforth Associate, merit from the Urban League of Portland and later Milwaukee for contributions to their education programs. She was also awarded a graduate research assistantship by Syracuse University and the University of Toronto. In addition, she conducted research while at the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane Australia and First Wisconsin, and the University of Portland nursing program. Her employment history covers both private and public institutions. She was most recently a Troy High math teacher and an adjunct at Russell Sage College, Hudson Valley Community College and Skidmore College and full-time at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. She was also the assessment center manager for the award winning competency-based program at Alverno College. Additionally, she was a manager for First Wisconsin National Bank of Milwaukee and part time instructor for the American Institute of Banking and the NABS jobs training program. Mrs. Walsh was an active member of the community and received recognition for her outstanding accomplishments. She participated in several programs like the LEEP and REASH nursing program for minority students. She was also an outstanding athlete and was voted Outstanding Senior Athlete at Monmouth College. In recognition of her scholarly and professional accomplishments, she was inducted into the Harding School Wall of Fame. For 20 years, Mrs. Walsh was active and proud of the Capitaland Chapter of the Sweet Adelines International and served their executive regional board. Finally, she was a member of the executive board of Delta Kappa Gamma, a women's educational sorority and a member of Delta Sigma Theta, a black professional women's community service organization. She spent her last three years with her loving husband at her side daily and in the excellent care of the staff of Van Rensselaer Manor to which the family is eternally grateful. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. from the John H. Clinton Funeral Home, Washington Park and Third St., Troy and 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Troy. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. She was born in Sarah, Miss. and lived in Albany for most of her life. She was employed by the State of New York for 30 years until her retirement in 1982. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ned Louis Young. She is survived by her children, Ethel (Robert) Mitchell of Atlanta, Ga., Norise (Randall) Harris of Albany, Melvin Young of Rochester, N.Y. and Michael Young of Albany; sister of Robert Scott of Cleveland, Ohio, Annie Sheldon of Miss. and Lily Williams of Albany. She is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Garland Bros. Funeral Home on Monday, October 11 beginning at 10:00.
