LOUDONVILLE Robert V. Baldwin passed away Friday, October 8, 2004 at Albany Memorial Hospital at age 85. Bob/Buddy lived in Albany and Rensselaer in his early years and in Loudonville for the past 56 years. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Irene Fish Baldwin. He was a World War II Army veteran and participated in the second wave assault on Omaha Beach, Normandy. Mr. Baldwin worked as a folding machine operator at Williams Press for over 30 years and as a custodian at the Colonie Town Hall for 10 years. Bob was a very devoted husband and father and loved animals. He leaves two daughters, Shari (Paul) Niedbalec and Ginnie (Stephen) Moore; two grandchildren, Michaela and Stephen Moore. He was predeceased by his sisters, Charlene Williams and Joan Mara; and a brother, Bill Rochford. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews including Robert Williams, Maren Jacobs, George Williams, Karen Brown, Cheryl Farthing, Valerie Abarca, Joseph Mara, Joan Navedo, Katherine LaVigne, Xavier (Corky) Mara, Charlene Frode-Hansen, Carol Brazinski, Joyce Martucci, Susan Peters and Carol Quatrocci. Also adopted family, Andrew Dziadosz and his family, and Peter, Helena and Isabella Cowan. Special friends include Evelyn Lewis, Charles and Thaisa Beach, Marie Griffen, Sister Catherine Kelly, Edna Davis and Bob (his mailman). Special thanks to the Memorial Hospital Congestive Heart Failure Program (particularly nurses, Jill, Martha and Mary Ellen) and the nurses on the fourth, fifth and sixth floors, especially Liz and Jeff, the emergency room and Colonie Paramedics. ALBANY Mary Shovlin Brennan, 82, died Sunday, October 10, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital. Mary was born in Penn. and had lived in Ravena, Selkirk and Albany. She retired in 1974 after many years of service at Albany Medical Center Hospital. She was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, Ravena. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Patrick Brennan. Survivors include her nephew, Frank Cross and his wife Peggy of Selkirk; great-nieces, Anna and Lisa Cross; and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. EAST GREENBUSH Mary Louise Brownell, 74, died Sunday, October 10, 2004 at Rosewood Gardens Nursing Home after a brief illness. Born in Albany on June 14, 1930, the twin daughter of the late William and Barbara J. (O'Neill) Brownell. Mary was also predeceased by her twin brother, Marshall Brownell. Mary sang in the choir and taught Sunday school at the Pineview Community Church, Albany and was a member of the Festival of Praise Choir. She was also a secretary for NYS Senate Legislature for 27 years prior to her retiring in 1985. She is survived by two cousins, Mrs. Lester Buxton of Ireland and Mrs. Reuel Street of Australia; her nieces and nephews; and her dear friends, Mrs. Grady Fortune and Mrs. Bud Tinsley, all of Brevard, N.C. and her friends in the Albany area. McGlaflin Sr. and Katherine Regan McGlaflin. Joan graduated from Vincentian Institute in Albany and was employed in the New York State Department of Law where she retired in November 1989 as senior law stenographer in Appeals and Opinions. Joan loved her home, gardening and knitting. She had a quick wit, was outgoing and personal She is survived by her son, Rev. Joseph G. Busch, Watervliet; daughter, Leslie J. Born in Albany, he was a lifelong resident. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed for many years by the Sterling Winthrop Drug Co. in Rensselaer. Son of the late Francisco and Bertha Bratt Chiarello. Beloved husband of the late Rose Chirico Carrello; loving father of Michele Zeno and her husband Douglas of Delmar; brother of Eleanor Vitale, Rosemary Saleh and the late Harold Chiarello and Ruth Lounello; cherished grandfather of Cristyn Hartson of Delmar and Jennifer Zeno of Albany. Costigan Jr., Edward J. SLINGERLANDS Edward J. Costigan Jr., 79, died on Sunday, October 10, 2004. Mr. Costigan was the husband of Elizabeth Betty Costigan until her death in March of this year. He was a 1943 graduate of C.B.A., where he graduated a Lt. He was on their rifle team where he earned a marksmanship certificate. He attended Furman University in Greenville, S.C. He was a 2nd Lt. in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a navigator on the B-24's. Mr. Costigan had worked for Keegan Truck Lines and Penn Freight Lines. He had worked for many years for Fruehauf Trailers in Albany. In 1965, he was commander and chairman of the Board of the Nathaniel Adams Blanchard Post #1040 American Legion, where he was instrumental in the construction and dedication of their new Post. He is survived by three sons, Edward Ned (Ann Marie) Costigan of Glenmont, Brian (Anne Schnieder) Costigan of Slingerlands and Chris (Mary) Costigan of Silver Springs, Md.; grandfather of Melissa, Matthew, Sean, Teresa and Mackenzie Costigan; several nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Albany, Pat was the daughter of the late August and Anna Clancy Korfhage and the wife of the late John J. DeBerri. Salutatorian of the class of 1942 at St. Joseph's Academy, Pat worked for the General Electric Company during World War II. A longtime employee of New York State, she retired from the Public Service Commission in 1982. She volunteered at St. James Institute, the Albany Jewish Community Center and the Whitehall Little League. She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society at St. James Church and the Albany Academy Mother's Association. Pat is survived by her children, Edward (Eileen) DeBerri of Rensselaerville and Ann (Joseph) Mulvihill of New York City; four grandchildren, John Mulvihill and August, Helen and Bernadette DeBerri; two nieces, Christine Korfhage of Sanbornton, N.H. and Joann DiNova of Santa Rose, Calif.; a nephew, Richard Korfhage of The Woodlands, Texas; many cousins and friends. She was born in Charleston, S.C. and has lived in Albany for most of her life. Mattie was a child care worker at St. Catherine's Home for Children in Albany for over 20 years. She was a longtime faithful and dedicated volunteer at St. John's-St. Ann's Church for over 30 years in Albany's South End. She is survived by her husband Ralph (Dutch) Y. Dorsey; her children, Angelo Hilton, Lorraine Dorsey Given, Ralph Dorsey Jr., James Dorsey, Susie Dorsey, Dolores Burton, Will Dorsey and Leah Redmon. Figel, Clara A. WESTERLO Clara A. Figel, 89, died Saturday, October 9, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Clara was born in Defreestville, N.Y., the daughter of the late John and Gertrude Becker. She crocheted beautiful blankets for the H.U.G.S. Program, a non-profit organization that donates hand made blankets to needy charities. Her greatest joy was being with her family and she was deeply loved by all. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, James H. Figel, Sr. in 1996. Survivors include a daughter, Delores A. Durfee and her husband, Robert of East Berne; two sons, James H. Figel, Jr. of East Berne and Jerald J. Figel of Westerlo; two grandchildren, Robert Durfee, Jr. and Lori Durfee; two great-grandchildren, Heather Durfee and Jason Smith; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Forezzi, Pearl Ruth Albany Pearl Ruth (Reinhardt) Forezzi, 84, entered into eternal rest with the Lord her Savior, Saturday October 9, 2004. Pearl was born on December 24, 1919 in Albany, one of nine children to the late Jacob and Lena (Helena Horwedel) Reinhardt. She lived in Albany all of her life as homemaker, devoted wife and mother. Pearl was the beloved wife of 64 years to Tony Forezzi who passed away August 7, 2003. She was also predeceased by a brother John Reinhardt and three sisters, Kathleen (Kate) Niles, Marie Albert and Joan Vrooman. Pearl held positions at Sterling-Winthrop in Rensselaer, Topps Dept. in Menands, Behr-Manning Plant, Babbit Co. and Fuller Brush Company. She retired from Solomon & Solomon Law Firm of Albany in 1978. Pearl was a communicant of St. John's-St. Ann's Church. She enjoyed life, kicking up her heels and loved being with family and friends whenever possible. She loved her family with a passion. Pearl's other passion was traveling with her daughters, whether one day trips or longer. Carol (afraid of flying) took her mother on several autumn bus trips to Montreal. She traveled with her daughter Lyn to many places, including the islands of Oahu, Maui and Kauai in Hawaii, St. Martin, W.I. They took yearly foliage trips to Vermont with Lyn and her best friend the late Diane Riverin, who Pearl loved fondly as a daughter. Pearl and Tony always enjoyed their many trips to Atlantic City with their friends Pasquale (Patsy) and Yolanda Mastriano. Eleven years ago, to Pearl's delight, Patsy and Yolanda convinced Tony at age 77 to take his first plane trip to Las Vegas. In the 60s, Pearl enjoyed her Sunday afternoon bowling league, The Roaring 20s with Tony, family and friends and their Friday night league, The Gaiety Girls, also with family and friends. Pearl is survived by her loving and caring daughters, Carol Forezzi and Linda (Lyn) Forezzi; her granddaughter, Lori Henrikson; and her great-grandson Anthony Tyler Ormsby. She is also survived by her sisters, Mrs. Andy (Edna Honey) Vincent, Mrs. Ernie (Marion Peppy) Schafer and Mrs. Martha (Margie) Brandt. Also survived by several nieces, nephews and her neighbors and caring friends, Veronica (Ronnie) and Joe Fischer and Eleanor and Marty Morrisey. She will be greatly missed by all those who loved her. We can remember Pearl for her kindness to others, her strength that was always there for anyone in need. Everyone who came into contact with Pearl loved her immediately for her great sense of humor, her genuine love of life and her bright spirit, which will shine forever. SCHENECTADY John J. Friello, 90, formerly of Park Ave., Schenectady, passed away Sunday, October 10, 2004 at Glendale Nursing Home after a short illness. He was born in the Bronx and moved to Rotterdam Jct. at age 9. Prior to going into the service, he was a railway head tender. After serving in the Army during World War II in the 771st anti-aircraft artillery battalion battery D, he worked for the General Electric Co. as a saw filer for 34 years retiring in 1976. John was known as a generous man with a great sense of humor who love to play practical jokes. He was an animal lover and a Yankee Fan who followed his team since his days as a boy in the Bronx. Mr. Friello was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club and St. Paul the Apostle Church. He was predeceased by his wife Lena Lavalla Friello who died in 1976; a daughter, Palma Friello; sister, Palmina Mangini and brother, Fred Friello. Survivors include his daughter, Angela St. Lawrence and her husband Stephen of Schenectady; brother, Anthony Friello of Schenectady; granddaughters, Melissa Vigliotti and her husband Vincent of Schenectady and Erin St. Lawrence; great-granddaughter, Victoria Vigliotti; several nieces and nephews. NASSAU William K. Gaunay Sr. of Nassau, died Sunday, October 10, 2004 at Albany Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gaunay was born and raised in Troy the son of the late Joseph and Jenny Gaunay. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. He was employed as a crane operator at the Watervliet Arsenal for many years retiring in 1985. Bill was a member of the Fr. Conan Lynch Council #11049 Knights of Columbus, the Edward C. Swartz Senior Service Center and a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Nassau. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor Zido Gaunay. Survivors include his sons, Stephen J. Gaunay of Massapequa Park, N.Y. and William K. Gaunay Jr. of Nassau; a brother, Ralph Gaunay of Schenectady; and three grandsons, Kyle, Ryan and Kevin Gaunay. Hanley, Mary Rose LATHAM Mary Rose Grobecker Hanley, 91, of Latham, died Saturday, October 9, 2004 at Our Lady of Hope Residence, Latham, N.Y., surrounded by her loving family, faithful Little Sisters of the Poor and caring staff. She was born August 20, 1913 in Lansingburgh, N.Y. and moved to Raymond Street, Latham in 1924. She was predeceased by her parents, Andrew Phillip Francis Grobecker and Mary Rose Foley, by her brothers, Francis Borgia and Andrew Cyril, her sister, Agnes Anne Buchanan, her loving husband Eugene Thomas Hanley and her dearly missed daughter Patricia Anne Hanley Capuano. She was a graduate of Latham School '28, Cohoes High School '32, and New York State College for Teachers at Albany '36. In September 1936, she started her teaching career at St. Bernard's School, Cohoes then Heatly High, Green Island. Over the years of raising her children she substituted in Cohoes and North Colonie schools. In 1963, she taught full time in Vincentian Institute Elementary School. Of all her teaching career, she loved V.I. the best and retired from V.I. in 1978. In her retirement, she was active in helping people through volunteer service in Literacy Volunteers of America, Catholic Charities Parent Aide, Eucharistic Minister, Religious Education Teacher and librarian at St. Ambrose, Bingo at Keveny Memorial Academy, and Legion of Mary. At Our Lady of Hope, Ma was librarian to their book collection and brought current events to the residents. Mary Rose is cherished by her children, Mary Ellen of Watervliet, Joseph Eugene (Andrea) of Loudonville, Margaret Agnes (Michael) Sweeney, Thomas Andrew (Mary Jane) of Latham, John Michael (Jane) of Clifton Park, Maureen Marian Hanley Ehmann of Mount Morris, N.Y. and Christopher Joseph (Lynn) Hanley of Valley Falls, N.Y.; and also survived by 20 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mary Rose was a born historian and made respect for learning essential in our lives. Her constant concern for others and humility in her faith was a source of hope and love for all her family. Ms. Hatch was known for her devotion to teaching architectural principles to children, college students and peers. Born in Ann Arbor, Mich., October 26, 1947, Kathlyn grew up in Indianapolis. She earned a B.A. in history from Barnard College and her M.A. from Columbia University School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. She taught historic preservation and architectural history of Boston University, the University of Vt., the University of N.C., the State University of N.Y. and the University of Fla. Kathlyn developed and directed the award-winning National Endowment of the Humanities pilot program Architectural Heritage Education in which Mass. teachers learned how to incorporate architectural themes into traditional curricula. She believed that architecture made these other disciplines lively subjects writing in one of her many publications that children not comfortable reading already inhabit the familiar, approachable, tangible world of the architecture that surrounds them. Ms. Hatch consulted for the Capital Region Center for the Arts in Education and for the Greater Capital Region Teacher Center in Albany. An internationally known scholar in architectural history and design, she developed programs for the Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education, the National Humanities Center the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and for school districts and education groups in the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, and France. She worked to preserve American's architectural past. In 1981, Kathlyn earned an award from the Victorian Society of America for establishing a dozen historic districts in Newton, Mass. Recently, she helped secure the Bridge of Lion in St. Augustine, Fla. as a historic landmark and was founding member of the Society for Commercial Archeology. Her design clients included UNESCO, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, Historic Savannah Foundation, and the National Arbor Day Foundation. She lectured widely for European groups such as English Heritage, the National Trust, Caisse Nationale, and in this country, the Getty Education Institute for the Arts, the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Her interests came together in 1997 in a project based at the Dimensions Educational Research Foundation through the First-Plymouth Early Education Program in Lincoln, Neb., where Kathlyn researched and encouraged the development of visual spatial skills in children using wooden blocks and exploring buildings and neighborhoods. The Nebraska Project reflected a lifelong practice of integrating architecture into everyday teaching and learning. Ms. Hatch is survived by her parents, Robert Winthrop and Marie (Martel) Hatch; sisters, Patrice Michele, Julia Ann, and Mary Elizabeth; brother, Robert Martel and their families. WATERFORD Henry J. Roy, 71, of Columbus Ave., died Sunday, October 10, 2004 at Samaritan Hospital. Born and educated in Waterford, he was son of the late Frank and Georgianna Messier Roy. Henry operated the family business, Roy's Trucking, which was started by his father. He retired due to illness two years ago. For many years he was responsible for digging the graves in most of the cemeteries in Waterford. He was a 53 year member of F.B. Peck Hose Co. in Northside and was currently serving as a commissioner and had served as chief. Henry was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Korea with the 62nd Engineering Department. He was a former member of the VFW, Waterford Memorial Post 5800 and was an avid bowler belonging to leagues at the Alpha Lanes in Troy. He is survived by his wife Patricia Clickner Roy; his daughters, Dawn M. Roy of Waterford and Cindy A. Foley of Malta. Also surviving are his sister, Beatrice Castracane of Cohoes; his granddaughter, Kaila Foley of Malta; as well as several nieces, nephews. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rt. 32), Waterford. Interment will be in Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. Sheehan, 39, loving wife and mother, of Third Avenue, Hadley, died at home surrounded by her family and friends on Monday, October 11, 2004 after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. Darci was born April 30, 1965 in Albany. She was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School, Schenectady, N.Y.; Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, N.Y. and College of St. Rose, Albany, where she received her B.A. in Elementary Education. After receiving her B.A. from St. Rose, she completed the paramedic course at Hudson Valley Community College and received her paramedic license. She had begun working on her master's degree at SUNY Albany before being stricken with cancer. Darci lived in Schenectady until 1983 when she moved to Latham, N.Y. She recently moved to the Adirondacks to live in the country as she had always dreamed of. Before her illness, Darci held a teaching position at Colonie High School in Colonie. Prior to that she was a teacher at Spa Christian School in Ballston Spa. She tutored students and was a substitute teacher. Darci taught first aid and CPR classes to community members while a member of Colonie EMS. Darci enjoyed attending Friday afternoon choir practice with John and Ron. Darci was a member of Light of the World Christian Church of Latham and previously a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Schenectady, where she served as a Sunday School teacher. Darci is survived by her loving husband, Gregg; children, Brittany and Richard DeMars of Hadley; their father, Gus DeMars of Troy; Jason Hall of Fairchild, Conn., Elissa Sheehan of Hadley; mother, Edith Hanke (Herb) of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; father, George Calder (Kathleen) of Scotia; sisters, Cheryl Campbell (Edward) of West Palm, Fla., Erin Calder of Scotia and Terese Murray of Latham; brother, Carl Calder (Desiree) of Schenectady; also survived by numerous other loving relatives and friends. Stewart, Elsie Beckman RENSSELAER Elsie Beckman Stewart, 86, died October 9, 2004, wife of the late William Stewart. Mother of Carol Ackerman of Delmar, grandmother of Holly Ackerman of Mich. Elsie enjoyed camping, sewing, bird watching and knitting. She worked for the Farm Bureau during World War II. She was born on July 6, 1911 in Great Barrington, Mass. and was the daughter of the late Wilber and Ella Wescott. At an early age, the family moved to Whitehall, N.Y. where she spent most of her childhood. At age 10, her family moved to Albany, N.Y. where she attended Albany City Schools. In 1939, she was married to Edward VanBergen, a union that was to last until his death in 1995. Mabel was a homemaker, an early member of the MC Laughton Club of Albany, past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, a communicant of Cathedral of All Saints Episcopal Church in Albany and in recent years, Saint Boniface Episcopal Church in Guilderland. She will be remembered mostly for her beautiful smile and for her love of people, especially children. She leaves a daughter, Lorretta and her husband Richard Peaker of Guilderland; granddaughter, April and her husband Dr. Michael Christine and three great-grandchildren, Erica Nicole, Michael Damien Jr. and Richard Edward, all of Clifton Park. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Guilderland. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Waters, 77, of Kingston, died Friday, October 8, 2004 at Benedictine Hospital, Kingston, after a long illness. Born February 23, 1927 in Upper Fairmont, Md., son of the late Rev. John Cranston Waters and Georgia E. Mears Waters. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School in Princess Ann, Md.; graduate of A.M.E. College of Ministry. Rev. Waters served in the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre of Operations and was a decorated veteran. He had been employed in the offices of the D&H Railroad in the Saratoga Champlain Division of the Transportation Dept. Headquarters in Albany as well as being a full time minister at the Bethel AME Church in Schenectady and then at St. Mark AME Church in Kingston. Rev Waters pastored at the Bethel AME Church in Schenectady and then St. Mark's AME Church until his retirement. He felt his ministry was his calling not only his vocation but his avocation. He was always available to pastor to those in need as well as performing his duties of counseling. He was a member of the 369th Veteran's Association of the Albany District and the Tuscan Masonic Lodge #85 P.H.A. in Albany; also a member of the Conference Trustee Board and member of the Finance Committee of the Western New York Conference. Survived by his wife, Audrey Waters of Kingston; sons, James L. of Clifton Park and William of Boca Raton, Fla.; daughter, Ellen E. Powell of Port Ewen, N.Y.; four sisters, Evelyn Polkinhorne of Bayside, L.I., Maggie Burgess of New York, N.Y., Sarah Woolford of Roselle, N.J. and Louise Rock of Baltimore, Md.; a niece, Delores McNeil of Roselle, N.J.; three nephews; one great-nephew; two great-nieces; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a host of cousins and friends. Worth Jr., 70, of Tannersville, died suddenly October 10, 2004 at the Albany Medical Center, Albany, N.Y. He was born December 17, 1933, the son of the late John W. and Nina Shultis Worth Sr. in Tannersville. Mr. Worth was a land surveyor and a Korean War veteran from 1953-55. He was a member of the Tannersville Fire Co. and former chief. He was also a member of the Tannersville Rescue Squad, a lecture at the Immaculate Conception Church in Haines Falls, N.Y. and an avid collector of model trains. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara A. Worth on June 1, 2004. Survivors include his sons, Michael Worth of Mt. Laural, N.J., Joseph T. and his wife Laurie J. Worth of Tannersville; a daughter, Lauriann M. Worth of Tannersville; a brother, Robert Worth and his wife Joyce of Franklyn, N.J.; sister-in-law, Sister Susan Mangam of Tannersville; several nieces and nephews.
