TROY Frank W. Bestle, 75, died suddenly Monday, October 11, 2004, at his home. He was born September 18, 1929. Frank was a graduate of Troy High School and Russell Sage College. He was employed for many years at Cluett's, was project manager for Troy Housing Authority and was a teacher in the Troy School District. Frank was very active in the foreign student exchange program. He sponsored and cared for many students and refugees. He was an avid supporter of of Troy High School Athletics Programs and was a member of the Troy School District Board of Education and past president of Troy High Booster Club. He was inducted into Troy High School Edward C. Picken Athletic Hall of Fame, a member of A.O.H., he volunteered at the Pahl House and Big Brothers and was an active member of St. Patrick's Parish, Troy. Frank is survived by several nieces and nephews; his many many friends and his beloved dog, Madison. He was predeceased by his sister Evelyn Noonan and brothers, Fred, John, Joe and Danny Bestle. There will be no calling hours. Born in Albany on June 14, 1930, the twin daughter of the late William and Barbara J. (O'Neill) Brownell. Mary was also predeceased by her twin brother, Marshall Brownell. Mary sang in the choir and taught Sunday school at the Pineview Community Church, Albany and was a member of the Festival of Praise Choir. She was also a secretary for NYS Senate Legislature for 27 years prior to her retiring in 1985. She is survived by two cousins, Mrs. Lester Buxton of Ireland and Mrs. Reuel Street of Australia; her nieces and nephews; and her dear friends, Mrs. Grady Fortune and Mrs. Bud Tinsley, all of Brevard, N.C. and her friends in the Albany area. Carter, 71, of Marengo Street, died Tuesday evening, October 12, 2004 with his family at his home after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Joe was born in Schenectady on October 30, 1932, the son of the late Joseph Carter and Evelyn Pacelli Carter Fontaine. He graduated from the former Nott Terrace High School, class of 1951. Joe served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, having attained the rank of PFC. He was employed for many years as a food broker for several area brokers. In 1972, Joe founded JAC Enterprise in Rotterdam, the first gift and novelty wholesaler in the area, retiring in 1998 after 26 years in business. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Joe will be remembered for his love of cooking, listening to Italian music and as an avid NY Yankees fan! He is survived by his children, Caroline and her husband Mark Sherman of Schenectady, Evelyn and her husband Dirk Doucette of Escondido, Calif., Joseph A. Carter Jr. of Rotterdam and the late Karen Ann Carter; grandfather of Ryan Carter, Sydney Carter, Even Doucette, Henry Doucette, Jonah Doucette and Andrew Sherman; and his wife Theresa Breslin Carter of Rotterdam. She worked as a seamstress for many years and then worked for Sears for 20 years before her retirement. She was a member of the American Legion Post #1520 Auxiliary and a former member of the Elks Lodge Auxiliary in Whitehall. Louise was an extremely talented seamstress and enjoyed making coats, dresses and other apparel for her daughters and grandchildren. She liked to dance, laugh and loved to have fun. She had a great zest for life and truly loved her family deeply. She will be greatly missed by her loving family as well as her many close friends. Louise is the beloved mother of Judith A. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had retired from the New York State Department of Transportation having worked out of the old Greenville department. Rose Ruth Maller, 96, formerly of Delmar, New York City and Boston, died October 9, 2004 at Fairlawn Nursing Home in Lexington, Mass. She was born in Lowell, Mass. to the late Rabbi Benjamin and Shifra Aronowitz. She was the loving wife of Dr. Julius B. Maller, who passed away in 1959, and beloved mother of Julie and Alan Altshuler of Belmont, Mass., Jeanne and David Shub of Albany, N.Y. and Michael and Jennifer Maller of Great Neck, N.Y., grandmother of five and great-grandmother of five. She was a graduate of Hunter College and Teacher's College. She was for many years a dedicated remedial reading teacher in the NYC public schools. Lillian was born in Atmore, Ala., she was one of 13 children; of the late Jimmy and Gertrude (King) Marshall. Lillian graduated from Escambia County High School in 1957 and shortly after she relocated to Albany, N.Y. where she raised her only child, the late Vernell Marshall. Lillian was a faithful servant to her friends, family and church. She retired from VA Stratton Medical Center after 25 years of service. To cherish her memory, Lillian leaves behind two grandchildren, Vontoyia and Enrique Marshall, both of Albany; four siblings, Willie Mae Wesley of Hinesville, Ga., Arthur Marshall of Pensecola, Fla., John Marshall of Albany and Willie Marshall of Atmore, Ala. ALBANY Mary Elizabeth McCarthy, 104, passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2004 at the Teresian House. Mary was born in Montreal, Canada on October 8, 1900. She was the daughter of the late Maryanne McManus Cooney and Louis N. Cooney. She was predeceased by her brother, five sisters, her husband, Francis Gerard McCarthy; and her son, Bryant E. McCarthy. Mary and her late husband moved from Montreal to Algonac, Mich. and eventually to the Delmar area in 1933. She was employed by the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance. After her retirement at age 65, she worked part-time for the Town of Bethlehem in the tax department until age 78. All her life, Mary was involved in many activities including the Knights of Columbus, the Monday Musical Club, the Bethlehem Senior Citizens, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, the AARP and the St. Thomas Altar Rosary Society. She was a past president of the United Transportation Union Auxiliary Lodge #314. At age 90, Mary was chosen Queen of the Tri-City Senior Pageant at St. Rose College, a title she still holds. That same year, she participated in the NYS Senior Pageant and was first runner-up. In 1999, Mary was an honoree in the Capital District Senior Housing Projects Ceremony where she received a Senior Lifetime Achievement Award. Mary's philosophy of life was simple, Every morning I thank God for the night I have spent, then I pray for a good day. Make it worthwhile and help me do what I can to help others, I pray. Mary is survived by her daughter, Frances Grober of Albany; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and her good friends, Millie and Jeanne. Elizabeth Winship Nicoll, 96, of Providence, died Sunday, October 10, 2004 at her residence in Providence. Born in Eagle Mills, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Frank Winship and the late Nell (McChesney) Winship and wife of the late Edward D. Nicoll. She resided in Eagle Mills until five years ago and was a graduate of Emma Willard School and Russell Sage College. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Nicoll was a legal secretary to trial lawyer John T. Norton. She was a member of the Eagle Mills United Methodist Church, a former member of the Women's Society and a teacher in the Sunday School. She was also a member of the Troy Women's Club, the Rensselaer Garden Club, Rensselaer County and Brunswick Historical Societies, the English Speaking Union, Women's Auxiliary of Samaritan Hospital and a member of the Country Club of Troy. She was a former member of Women's Auxiliary of Vanderheyden Hall. She is survived by two daughters, Cynthia (Nicoll) Scott of Foxboro, Mass. and Beth Kimberly Malgieri of Grafton, Mass. and a grandson, Gregory E. Scott of San Francisco, Calif. O'Connor, Timothy Nicholas VOORHEESVILLE Timothy Nicholas O'Connor, 52, died suddenly Tuesday, October 12, 2004. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late John J. and Elizabeth Gaspary O'Connor. Tim was the dear husband of Barbara Devine O'Connor and the cherished father of Laura, Jack and Kellie O'Connor. He was the dear brother of Patricia Holmes (Theodore) of Niskayuna, Lisa Corbitt (Chuck) of Albany and the late John J. O'Connor Jr.; son-in-law of the late John F. and Margaret Devine; brother-in-law of Linda Griffin and John R. Devine (Kelly), all of Md.; several nieces and nephews also survive. He was a director and stockholder of Marvin & Company, PC of Latham and currently president of the Northeast Chapter of New York State Society of CPA's. Timothy was awarded a BS degree in business administration from Bentley College in 1975. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, secretary and board member of the New York State Society of CPA's, a past board member of Albany Country Club and board chair of the Albany City Athletic Club. He was a past board member of the Center for the Disabled and Hope House Inc. He was a past board member of the Albany Medical Center Foundation and past chairman of the Annual Golf Tournament for the Children's Hospital at the Albany Medical Center. Tim was a member of the Albany Stueben Club and Albany Country Club. His golfing pards will surely and sorely miss him on the golf course and in the 19th hole. Raufman, Seymour LATHAM Seymour Raufman, age 85, of East Glenwood Drive in Latham, N.Y., died Monday evening, October 11, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Raufman was born in Troy, N.Y. and was the son of the late Joseph and Goldie Aronson Raufman. Mr. Raufman was a lifelong Capital District resident and had been the proprietor of the former Cohoes Men's Shop in Cohoes, N.Y. for 35 years. He was a member and past president of the Cohoes Commerce and Industry Association. Mr. Raufman was a member of the Jewish War Veterans and a life member of the Beth Tephilah Synagogue in Troy, N.Y. He enjoyed horse racing and was an avid bowler. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Seltzer Raufman; father of Lloyd Raufman. He is also survived by two sisters, Ethel Raufman Dorfman and Frieda Raufman Huppert as well as his sister-in-law, Jessie Raufman. Mr. Reilly was born in Schenectady to the late Thomas and Harriett Martin Reilly. He was a lifelong city resident. Mr. Reilly was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a police officer for the city of Schenectady for 22 years, retiring in 1971 as a detective sergeant. From 1953 until 1987 he was the director of safety and security for St. Clare's Hospital. Mr. Reilly was a communicant of Sacred Heart-St. Columba's Church in Schenectady. He was a member and former trustee of the Retired Schenectady PBA. Mr. Reilly was predeceased by his wife, Rose Mary Justin Reilly, she died in 2002. He is survived by two sons, Jack Reilly of Scotia and James M. Reilly of Snellville, Ga.; one daughter, Lynn Reilly Brown of Schenectady; one brother, Thomas Reilly of Schenectady; two sisters, Sister Marguerite Reilly, SJS of Troy and Elizabeth Reilly of Schenectady; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Sand, 45, died Monday, October 11, 2004 due to a heart attack. Born in Schenectady, January 27, 1959, he was the youngest son of Carl and Dorothy Sand. Eric's father passed away September 1995. Eric graduated from Guilderland Central School and Chabot College in Calif. and took extra engineering courses at California's Berkeley University. Upon graduation, he went to work for AC Corporation in Calif. Working there for 15 years, the death of his father made him realize he was too far from home, so Eric resigned and sold his home, moved East and bought a home in Schoharie to be near his mother, brothers and sisters. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Eric's hobby was working on old fashion radios, the kind with tubes, and has approximately collected and repaired a hundred. His love was his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He belonged to the Engineering Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Club in Calif. Eric also belonged to the International Union of Operating Engineers. Survivors include his mother, Dorothy Sand of Altamont; and his brothers and sisters, Carl Sand Jr. and his wife Janet of Cobleskill, Peter Sand and his wife Karen of Saratoga, Lisa Sand Pierce and husband Larry of Schoharie and Susan Sand Weinberg and husband Daniel of Guilderland; also many nieces and nephews. Mr. Sullivan was a U.S. Army veteran, serving his country during World War II in both Italy and Northern Africa. Bob was a salesman for many years with Top Tile in Latham before his retirement. He was a member of the American Legion Post #1092 in Niskayuna. Mr. Sullivan enjoyed American history. He loved all animals, especially dogs. Bob loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them.
