She was a member of AARP and actively participated in the senior citizen community. She enjoyed gardening and traveling. She was the wife of the late Gerald J. Acierno, who died in 1992. SCOTIA Following a long illness, Liv Johanne Dimon passed away peacefully, with family, on Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at home in Scotia, N.Y. where she and her husband Paul resided since October 2003. She was born in Lillehammer, Norway to Johannes and Lydia (Haugen) Roislien. While at a young age, she immigrated to Canada, then to the United States where she was employed as a governess for various families. Following her marriage to Paul Dimon in Southampton, Long Island on November 23, 1966, she relocated to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. where she resided until October 2003. Mrs. Dimon was employed by Eden Park Nursing Home in Poughkeepsie as a licensed practical nurse for 16 years. She enjoyed her Norwegian heritage and was an active member of the Sons of Norway, Hudson Valley Lodge, Kingston, N.Y. Survivors include her beloved husband, Paul Dimon; her daughter, Michele and her husband Kenneth W. Swain III of Scotia; her son, Philip and his wife Leanne of Orlando, Fla.; grandsons, Nickolai and Zachary Swain of Scotia; a granddaughter, Ayla Dimon of Orlando; two brothers, Arne Roislien and Einar Roislien of Norway; four sisters, Astrid Lund, Inga Mathiesen, Anna Saether and Ruth Mathisen of Norway; and numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces in Norway. Born and educated in Albany, he was the son of the late Howard D. and Mary Ryan Hoffman. He was a resident of Loudonville for 54 years and a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hoffman owned the former Jet Inn in Latham, and formerly worked in the family ice and oil businesses in Menands. Mr. Hoffman later worked with Hoffman Trucking and Excavating. Hoffman-Grillion, 86, of Albany, died August 29, 2004 at the Albany County Residential Health Care Facility after a long illness. She was born in Albany, N.Y. on August 13, 1918, the fourth of five children born to Fred and Ida Momrow. She was a graduate of the Roessleville High School in 1938 and a resident of Albany (Town of Colonie) for most of her life. Marian assisted her husband, the late Leslie J. Hoffman Sr., with the bookkeeping aspects of his business and, as her children reached adulthood, she worked primarily for State Bank of Albany which, after several mergers, became the Bank of America. She retired in 1983. As a young woman, Marian was active in the West Albany Fire Department's Women's Auxiliary, the Daughters of the Eastern Star and the 4th Presbyterian Church of Albany, which later merged with another congregation to become the United Fourth Presbyterian Church. Subsequently, Marian was a longtime member of the Colonie Business and Professional Women's Association, the Bethany Reformed Church and a volunteer in the Albany Memorial Hospital's gift shop. Upon her retirement, Marian and her husband, Les, enjoyed spending the winters in Melbourne, Fla., along with several longtime close friends from the Albany area. Marian continued to snowbird to Melbourne following Les' death in the late winter of 1992. In 1996, she became the wife of the late Roy J. Grillion of Melbourne and resided there from 1995 until the fall of 2002, when she returned permanently to Albany. Marian was a devoted wife and mother, not only to her children, but also to her only grandchild. She enjoyed years of family gatherings with her parents, brothers and sisters and their families. She was loyal and generous to all whom she befriended. Above all else, Marian will be remembered for her love of both the giving of and the going to parties and dances and her interest in high fashion in her dress and in her homes. She is survived by her sister, Gertrude Dobbs of Albany, N.Y.; her children, Leslie J. Hoffman Jr. of Albany and Judith (Jay) Hoffman Hays of Ossipee, N.H.; her grandson, Todd E. Hoffman and his wife Connie of Pawling, N.Y.; great-granddaughter, Farrell Friday Hoffman of Pawling; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and their children. Gordon's early years were lived in Cobleskill, N.Y and he was a graduate of Cobleskill Central High School. He served as a corporal in the US Marine Corps in World War II and participated in the invasions of Guadalcanal, New Britain and Palau Islands, receiving a Purple Heart. Later, he was employed as a salesman for Singer Sewing Machines, State American and Otto Oldsmobile, retiring in 1984. He was married to Elsie Jean Cooper in Auburn, N.Y. on June 13, 1962. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Jean Rew, Latham, N.Y.; son, Michael D. and daughter-in-law Jeni Rew, Glenmont, Ohio; daughter, Pamela Clare Rieck, Pattersonville, N.Y.; sister, Marie Austin, Cobleskill, N.Y.; aunt, Mildred Whitbeck, Cobleskill, N.Y.; grandchildren, Amanda Rew, Scott and Tony Hinkle and C.J. Rogers, died Monday, August 30, 2004 at Albany Medical Center after a courageous battle with heart disease and kidney failure. He is survived by his wife Mary whom he married March 21, 1986; sons, Samuel Patrick Rogers of Ravena and Matthew Cahn of Albany. He is also survived by a sister, Ann Rogers and nephew, Alan Rogers, both of Albany. Bob was born to Edwin and Helen Whitbeck Rogers in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He attended Saratoga schools before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He served overseas as an aerial photographer during the Korean War and stateside as a ground safety specialist. After the service, Bob attended the former Albany State Teachers College while working as an Albany city firefighter. After graduation, he worked in advertising and sales for many years until finding his life's work, career counseling. Bob worked in this capacity for both the city and county of Albany before founding Sage Associates and later Resumes Plus, both in Albany. He was a pioneer in the job club movement, starting many groups throughout the Capital District. He was the author of two books on job search, Secrets of the Hidden Job Market and The New Mosaic: Job Clubs. He helped many people and was especially proud of his work with people living at the margins. He was a passionate advocate for the least, the last and the lost. Bob became a father late in life and was accompanied everywhere by his pride and joy, Samuel Patrick. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church, where he worked in economic and social justice ministries. He was a representative to the Capital Area Council of Churches and was active in interfaith activities for many years. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and loved old movies, Frank Sinatra and cherry pie. Bob's family is grateful for the skilled and compassionate care he received from many community providers these last years and from the staff at Albany Medical Center during his final illness. He is formerly of Glenville. Phil worked at General Electric until his retirement. He was also a bus driver for the Niskayuna School District. He was a past member of the Alplaus Fire Department, the Woodlin Club and past president of the Walhalla Country Club. Phil played a mean game of golf. Beloved husband of Ruth Plankenhorn Salvino. Phil and Ruth would have been married 60 years this September and had planned to renew their vows. Their marriage was a lasting blessing to their family. Phil loved his Ruthie deeply. Phil is survived by his children, Sharon (Joseph) Carfora, Dawn Natole, Philip M. (Mary) Salvino Jr. He was a loving father and father-in-law. Sargent, Virginia SCHENECTADY Virginia White Sargent, 85, of DeCamp Avenue, Schenectady and formerly Raleigh, N.C., died Saturday, August 28, 2004 following a long illness. She was predeceased by her first husband, Dr. Frederick Sargent and her second husband, Paul Young. Born in Schenectady on August 21, 1919, she was the daughter of the late William C. and Lillian (McKim) White. She graduated from Simmons College in Boston, Mass. with a master's degree in nutrition. Virginia worked as a nutritionist in N.C. and later with the W.I.C. Program in N.Y. State. As a summer resident of Bolton Landing, N.Y., Virginia did volunteer work in the local library and museum. She was active in the League of Women Voters, Channel 17 Education Programming and the American Cancer Society. Survivors include a son, Frederick Sargent III of Schenectady and a daughter, Anne Gillies of Union City, Mich. She leaves behind four grandchildren; two brothers, William M. Helen loved animals and cared for them throughout her life, her favorites being her cat and her dog. She was a homemaker, a woman of many talents; flower gardening, cooking, sewing, and other crafts. Helen is remembered as a woman who gave love unconditionally to her family, friends and others in need. Helen was the loving wife of Russell J. Scaccia who predeceased her in 1993. Helen is the beloved mother of Robert Warnken and mother-in-law of Shirley Warnken. She was born in Albany and was the daughter of the late Charles and Helen Reno. Charlene was raised in Clinton Heights and graduated from Columbia High School in 1962. She was employed for many years at the New York State Public Service Commission. Charlene's heart and home were always open to everyone. She will be missed by them and all of the friends that treasured her presence in their lives. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. The husband of Amelia Molly Siiss Sparck, he was born in Yorktown, Texas, son of the late W.J. and Caroline Thieme Sparck. A resident of the Albany area since 1983, Carl also had resided in Liverpool and North Syracuse for several years. He served in the U.S. Air Force in the early 1960s and was stationed in Japan, St. Albans, Vt. and Hancock Air Force Base in Syracuse. Mr. Sparck was a phone representative with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance for 15 years, retiring in 2000. He previously was employed by Kemper Insurance in Syracuse and Albany. Carl was a member of the Colonie Alliance Church of the Christian and Missionary Alliance in Albany, where he served as elder, trustee and vice chairman of the governing board and chairman of the Missions Committee. He was a former scout master of BSA Troop 92 in North Syracuse for 10 years. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Linda Lin Sparck of Syracuse and Patricia Sparck Fragola of Providence, R.I. and two brothers, Darwin (Rosie) Sparck of Yorktown, Texas and Vernon (Jeanette) Sparck of Weetsatche, Texas. Valentine, Carol NISKAYUNA Carol Valentine, 63, of Valencia Road, Niskayuna, died Saturday, August 28, 2004, after a two and one-half year courageous battle with acute leukemia. She was born September 14, 1940 in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of the late William and Vivian MacTiernan, last of Phoenix Avenue, Schenectady. Carol previously resided on the upper west side in New York City. Mrs. Valentine attended Prospect Heights High School, Brooklyn, N.Y. She received a B.A. from Duke University and a M.A. from Columbia University. Carol was a teacher with the U.S. Peace Corps, Roslyn Public Schools, Schenectady County Planned Parenthood and NYS Department of Health. She was a health administrator-director of WIC for the NYS Department of Health. Carol was a current member and past president of the First Unitarian Society of Schenectady. She was also a past member of the First Unitarian Society of Albany and of the All Souls Unitarian Congregation in New York City. Carol spent much of her life in service to others, both in her employment and to her family. She will be remembered by her family and friends as a creative force; for art she produced, for the places she designed and for the people she helped shape and nurture. To all of her pursuits, she brought the light of her laugh and the light of her wisdom and insight, making the lives of so many people, particularly women and children, better and stronger. She is survived by her husband Carl, whom she married April 1, 1961 in Hamburg, N.Y.; her four children, Laurae, Cate, Kristen and Glen; six grandchildren, Lance, Collin, Jeremy, Will, Sofia and Cooper; her brother, William MacTiernan and her sister, Janis Hoffman. Wands, 92, beloved wife of the late Walter Francis Wands, died Sunday afternoon, August 29, 2004 at the Schuyler Ridge Nursing Home in Clifton Park. Born in Albany the daughter of the late John Francis Schwalbe Sr. and Elizabeth Ellen Chambers Schwalbe. Mrs. Wands attended St. Patrick's School in Albany and graduated from Albany High School. From 1942 to 1952, she was the owner and operator of Wands General Store in Latham along with her late husband and she previously worked at General Electric during World War II in the bond and treasury department and after closing the general store, she went back to General Electric for two years. Mrs. Wands retired in 1982 as a secretary from the New York State Department of Social Services after 26 years of service. She was a member of St. Ambrose Church in Latham. She is survived by her three children, Myrna Bennett and her husband Ron of Great Falls, Mont., Walter J. Wands and his wife Carole of Ramona, Calif. and Jack F. Wands and his wife Nancy of Latham; and a daughter-in-law, Laura Wands of Latham. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Wands was predeceased by her son, Charles M. Wands in 1980 and a brother, John F.
