BERLIN William H. Baldwin, 65, of Plank Road, died on Sunday, September 5, 2004 at Samaritan Hospital. Born in Troy, N.Y. on March 9, 1939, he was the son of Geneva M. Oatman Cioffi of Berlin and the late Howard Baldwin. He was of the Roman Catholic faith. Mr. Baldwin was a United States Air Force veteran serving from 1956 to 1958. He worked as a driver/dispatcher for Black and White Cab in Troy from 1961 through 1991. Bill was a member of the Cohoes Moose and a former member of the Watervliet Elks. He bowled in various leagues at Alpha Recreation Bowling Center in Troy. He was an avid NASCAR fan. Survivors include his beloved friend Constance Foley; his children, Angelique (James) Garrity of Saratoga Springs, Wendy (Charles) Oswald of Waterford, William (Carrie) Baldwin Jr. of Troy, Kelly Baldwin of Albany; grandchildren, Daniel and Cory Oswald, Jamie Castracani, Colleen Garrity, Rachel and Emily Baldwin; stepchildren, Robin (Homer) Carter of Troy, Debbie Dobert of Watervliet, Bonnie (Walter) Mundell of Cohoes, Chuck (Andrea) Dobert of Beacon, David Dobert of Schenectady; five brothers, Theodore of Waterford, George and Jack of Fla., Lawrence and James of Stephentown; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Candeloro, Bruno N. ROTTERDAM Bruno Candeloro, 82, of Anthony Drive, passed away peacefully into the hands of the Lord Sunday, September 5, 2004 with his loving and devoted family by his side at St. Clare's Hospital after a short illness. He was the son of the late Nazzareno and Maria Grazia Candeloro and was born in Serra San Bruno Calabria, Italy on August 5, 1922. The family came to the United States in 1927 settling in Schenectady. He was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School and was first employed at the Alco Locomotive Works and retired from General Electric Co. Large Steam Turbine Division after 36 years. After his retirement, Bruno was very active with his woodworking projects building several grandfather clocks and cabinets for family, friends, and charities as well as working with his son on many home projects. He also took much pride in his home, lawn and garden. For the last nine years and at the onset of illness, Bruno delivered Meals on Wheels for Catholic Charities and was always available to make a run when someone wasn't available. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Holy Name Men's Society, League of the Holy Family, Susupiat Canora Society and GE Quarter Century Club. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Josephine; son, Nicholas and his wife Carol of Guilderland; daughter, Joanne and her husband Michael Litz of Rotterdam; son, Gerard GJ of Mystic, Conn. He also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren, Kevin, Brian, Joelle and Davia Litz and Kimberly and Katie (his little Katie) Candeloro. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Peter Scavullo, Salvatore Pandolf (Marie); sister-in-law, Yolanda Jones (Donald) as well as several nieces and nephews. Caplan, David ALBANY David (Dubby) Caplan, son of the late Charles and Lena Caplan, beloved husband of Shirley Mermelstein Caplan for 56 years, cherished father of Leta and Hal Smith, Murray and Gail Caplan and Sharon Polovina, and adored Papa of his grandchildren, Caley, Julie, Kyle, Bryan, Chad, and Zack. Survived by his loving sister, Clara Perlmutter, and predeceased by his dear sister and brothers, Esther Werlin, Jack Caplan and Robert Caplan. Also survived by caring nephews and nieces. Born and lived in Albany, New York. Graduated from Albany High School and attended St. Lawrence University. Enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He served in the 8th Air Force, flying 35 missions over Germany as a navigator on a B-17 Flying Fortress, receiving several distinguished awards and medals. After his discharge in fall of 1945, he transferred to Syracuse University and received a bachelor of science degree in economics. After graduating, he joined his father, Charles and Uncle Hymie in their family furniture store, Caplan Bros on South Pearl Street in Albany. He met and married his life's sweetheart, Shirley, in 1948. Their extraordinary relationship was an inspiration to all who knew them. He left the furniture store in 1954 and joined the Charles Company of Troy and went to work with his brother, Jack. He left the business in 1962 when he joined the New York State Department of Commerce as a business consultant, subsequently becoming the department's Red Tape Cutter and the ombudsman advocate for small business, until his retirement in March 1991. He was very active in the building of Temple Israel and served as vice president, treasurer and member of the board of directors for many years, receiving many plaques and citations for his dedicated years of service. For his support of the creation of the Capital District Hebrew Academy, he was awarded membership as Guardian of the Torah. He dedicated his life to helping others and was an active and generous supporter of the Jewish Welfare Fund (United Federation), the United Way, the Regional Food Bank, civil rights organizations and many national and community-wide efforts to help those in need. Evelyn was a graduate of Albany High School. She owned her own business as a beautician for many years. She was then employed by the New York State Dept. of Labor until her retirement in 2003. She was also a member of the Italian American Club and loved her doll collection. DesChamps, 79, died Saturday, September 4, 2004 at his home after a short illness. Born July 6, 1925 in Cohoes, the son of the late Joseph and Malvina Daigneault DesChamps. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran serving in the Philippines on the USS Essex aircraft carrier. He has lived in Halfmoon for the past 50 years. Ernest worked for the NYS, DEC in Albany in human resource management for 32 years before retiring in 1983 and also worked at JC Penny's in Clifton Park for several years. He was a member of the SPEBSQSA (Barber Shop Quartet) and was active in the Saratoga Racing City Choirs for the past 35 years. Ernest also enjoyed gardening and painting. He is survived by his wife Carol Adams DesChamps of Halfmoon; a son, Randy DesChamps of Halfmoon; a daughter, Nancy Hegmann of Halfmoon; four grandchildren, Keith and Brian Ashline, Kelli Fratus and Travis Hegmann. He worked for John Hancock Life Insurance Co. and retired as a manager in 1984. Anthony was also owner/manager of DeWitt Motel in East Greenbush for 40 years, and retired from there in 2000. Ferdinand Stanley Hoffmeister, M.D., D.M.D., F.A.C.S., beloved husband and father, scholar and gentleman, passed into the arms of our Lord on September 6, 2004. He was born in what is now the Czech Republic to Ferdinand and Kamila Hoffmeister, training in medicine at Charles University in Prague before immigrating to the United States. A pioneer in the field of plastic surgery, he trained at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., where he served as chief surgical resident, before joining the Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, N.Y., where he was chief of Department of Head and Neck Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery for 11 years. Eventually, he moved to Albany, N.Y. to join the surgical group of Macomber, Hoffmeister and Wong, and became professor of clinical surgery at the Albany Medical College. At that time, he met his wife, Jana, with whom he began a family and to whom he forever remained faithful and devoted. In the course of his career he retained numerous academic titles, authored books and over a hundred original research articles. Despite a busy professional career, he maintained time with his loved ones and friends. He was much beloved by those who knew him, his charm, gentle manner, and humor cherished by all and he will be dearly missed. Predeceased by his mother and father, he is survived by his wife, children, Peter, Paul and Jana; his sister, Milena; nephews, Martin and Vaclav and extended family. Kenney, Eva HOOSICK FALLS Eva Schmigel Kenney, 82, of Scott Street, died on Sunday, September 5, 2004 at the Hoosick Falls Health Center. Born in Glens Falls, N.Y. on October 29,1921, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Hazel Roberts Shattuck formerly of Putnam, N.Y. She was the widow of Emil H. Schmigel who died on April 23, 1980 and Earl F. Kenney who died on March 31, 1998. Mrs. Kenney attended Ticonderoga High School and worked as a chambermaid at the Glen Bernie Club in Gull Bay, N.Y. and at White Birches Tourist Home in Ticonderoga. She married Mr. Schmigel on December 5, 1946 at her parents farm in Putnam and moved to Hoosick Falls in 1947. She worked for a short time at Nancy Shoe Co. before moving to Plainville, Conn. in 1953. In 1954, they moved back to Hoosick Falls and purchased Brazill's (Smokey's) Grill in Bennington, which they owned for 23 years. She married Mr. Kenney on October 12, 1983. Eva was a member of the First United Church in Hoosick Falls, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. Post #8417 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post #40. She also bowled for 21 years at the Bar-B-Que Lanes and was vice-president of the Hudson-Mohawk Counties Council Ladies Auxiliary to the V.F.W. from 1983 to 1984. Survivors include two daughters, Marie S. McClumpha and her husband David of Selkirk, Linda J. Bacon of North Bennington; a stepson, Earl M. Kenney of Fitchburg, Mass.; her sisters, Shirley R. Smith of Hague, N.Y., Gertrude A. Ryan of Ticonderoga; a brother, James H. Shattuck of Bath, Pa.; two grandsons, Ian S. McClumpha and Taylor Bacon; and three granddaughters, Stacy D. Smith, Nancy A. He worked as an electrician with Local 724 for many years and was a longtime active member of the Albany Elks Lodge 49, B.P.O.E. GLENVILLE Charlotte E. Kiggins, 78, of Glenville died Sunday, September 5, 2004 following a short illness. Charlotte was employed at General Electric for 35 years, a member of the GE Quarter Century Club and a longtime member of the Mike & Camera Retiree's Association. She was full of life and her family and friends would agree that her love for community involvement was above and beyond. One that will be remembered as her greatest accomplishment was her creation and production of the St. Clare's Choraliers. She was honored with a brick in Proctors Walk of Stars for this achievement. She also served on the Board of Directors of the St. Clare's Hospital Foundation, was past president of the Sunnyview Ladies' Auxiliary and St. Clare's Ladies Auxiliary and coordinated the entertainment for the Proctor's Christmas activities. Her husband, John Kiggins died on February 14, 1999. ALBANY Phyllis F. Nelson, 71, passed away Friday, September 3, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital. Phyllis was born on November 26, 1932 in Worcester, Mass. to the late Joseph D. and Mary Ann Kapusta Parent. Phyllis had worked at SUNY at Albany and enjoyed gardening and interior designing. Phyllis is survived by her husband of 49 years, Earl C. of Albany; four sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Catherine of Schenectady, Jeffrey and Wendy of Colonie, Brian and Susan of Atlanta, Ga. and Timothy and Michelle of Ballston Spa; and four sisters, Ann Warren and Barbara DelGreco, both of Worcester, Mass., Patricia Palubicki of Island Lake, Ill. and JoAnn Periman of Las Vegas, Nev. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Prior, 94, formerly of Nassau, died Saturday, September 4, 2004 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson after a brief illness. Mrs. Prior was born in Nassau, the daughter of the late Peter and Katherine Michael. She lived in Nassau until moving to Barnwell Health Facilities in Valatie five years ago. Ruth was a graduate of the Troy Music Conservatory. She taught piano in Nassau for many years. She was a member of the North Nassau Community Church. Priznar, Michael HOUSTON, Texas Michael Priznar, 90 of Houston, Texas, formerly of Garner Street, Cohoes, departed this world September 4, 2004 in Houston. A native of Cohoes until 2002, Mike was born in his parents, Nicholas and Mary Priznar's home on Sargeant Street. He graduated from Cohoes High school in 1932 where he played on the varsity basketball team which advanced to the first round of the N.Y.S. championship. He attended Union College in Schenectady and graduated in 1936 with a B.S. in chemistry. Upon graduation, he held a variety of positions in the Greater Albany area including draftsman at the Watervliet Arsenal. In World War II he served throughout the Indian subcontinent as a U.S. Army technical sergeant specializing in electronics and communications. His name and his deceased younger brother John, are inscribed in a World War II stone memorial monument in West End Park in Cohoes in public gratitude for military service. In 1946, Mike began his career as a pharmaceutical research chemist at Sterling Inc. in Rensselaer where he was to spend the next 32 years of his working life. At Sterling, he contributed to numerous projects resulting in commercially successful pharmaceutical and healthcare products that are commonly used today. At Sterling he also met his future wife, Frances Rose Siracusa, RN, whom he married June 30, 1951. Mike enjoyed home electronics repair as a hobby business until the overwhelming popularity of transistors diminished demand for his vacuum tube based advise. He was active in coaching boys sports including CYO basketball and Little League and intermediate league baseball. Most recently, he supported and advised coaches on competitive girls volleyball in the Houston area. His teams were usually champions. He was an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 44 at St. Agnes in Cohoes and he enjoyed presenting lectures on chemistry at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy. Though born in the Russian Orthodox Church, he converted to Roman Catholicism and was a long term member of the St. Agnes and then Holy Trinity parish. He is survived by his sons, Nicholas Priznar of Phoenix, Ariz. and Francis Priznar of Gaithersburg, Md.; a daughter, Regina Michael of Magnolia, Texas. He is also survived by his six grandchildren. His beloved wife, Frances, passed away November 3, 1995. Mr. Russell was born in Troy on June 18, 1947, the son of the late Allen and Margaret (Shea) Russell. He graduated from SUNY Albany with a B.S. in business administration and was a member of the Kappa Beta fraternity. He retired as the assistant director for Classification and Compensation for the NYS Department of Civil Service in January of 2003 after 32 1/2 years of dedicated service. Al was a humble man who was known for his kindness toward others, his outgoing nature and hearty greetings. He enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with his family at their camp on Galway Lake. The activities he enjoyed included biking, kayaking, hiking and cross country skiing. He was a member of the Capital Area Ski Touring Association with whom he traveled extensively through out Europe. He was a member of the Northeast Harness Horsemen's Association owning several trotters with business partner Don Bates. Al had a love for traveling and planning trips for family and friends and received an associates degree in travel and tourism from Schenectady County Community College. He was a loving, caring and proud father who taught by example. He was active in his children's lives, volunteering his time with the Bethlehem Soccer and Basketball Clubs and Tri Village Little League. Al coached baseball for many years with the Messina & Cahill Little League team. He loved attending high school and college sporting events in which his son participated. He was a faithful parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Delmar. Al volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House where he assisted with the cooking and was especially known for his mashed potatoes. He was also a volunteer with the Wildwood programs and served as a board member. He is survived by his wife, Linda (Klein) Russell; his daughter, Amy K. Russell of Albany; his son, Kevin S. Russell of Saratoga Springs; and his sister-in-law, Ellen N. Klein of Delmar. Born in Pforzheim Germany, son of the late Karl and Christiane Renz Wahl. He graduated from Albany High School and attended the V12 Flight Training Program at RPI in Troy. Mr. Wahl was also a Golden Gloves Boxer Light Heavyweight. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the USS Vicksburg in the Pacific Theatre. Mr. Wahl worked as a mail handler for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1985. He was a 40 year member of the Guttenberg Lodge No. 737 and F. & AM, Sheehy Palmer VFW Post 6776, Nathaniel Blanchard Post 1040 American Legion and the Third Reformed Church. Husband of the late Jennie Rochon Wahl; father of Thomas Wahl and his wife Janet of Greenwich, N.Y.; brother of Helen Gray and her husband William of Delmar. SOUTH VALLEY George Stanley Webster Jr., 57, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2004 at the home he built which was on part of the family farm. George was in the Labor Union and was a Mason in Local 2. He worked for the Albany Marble as a tile setter for many years. He was a member of the B A C for 37 years. He was also a Vietnam veteran from 1965-1966. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Dale Christman Webster; daughter, Heather (Rob) Webster; son-in-law, Jim Mancuso; and grandchildren, Sarah Mancuso, Dylan and Sean Webster. Weeks, Barbara Elaine NEW BALTIMORE Barbara Elaine Weeks, age 53, New Baltimore Town Clerk, died unexpectedly at Albany Medical Center Hospital on Saturday, September 4, 2004. Barbara was born on August 10, 1951 in East Rockaway, Long Island, the daughter of Elaine Wood of Albany and the late Martin C. Smith. She was a graduate of SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Oneonta with a degree in culinary arts. She was married October 19, 1974 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church to Kenneth Weeks, who survives at home. Mrs. Weeks was first elected town clerk in 1988 for the Town of New Baltimore and was a member of the New York State Town Clerks Association and treasurer of the Columbia-Greene Town Clerks Association. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Albany. Barbara enjoyed crafts, especially Christmas arts and crafts and needlepoint. Barbara made the wreath that is at the entrance of the New Baltimore Town Hall. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Cpl. Matthew B. Weeks, USMC of New Baltimore; a brother, Raymond W. Smith of Altamont; and her nieces and nephews, Gordon Smith, Harry and Barry Braker, Jonathan, James and Joseph Caparaso, Susan, Michael and James Weeks.
