Born in Tapolca, Hungary, he was the son of the late Lajos and Margit Bencze. Stephen served in the Hungarian Army before immigrating to America with his wife, Maria in 1956. He worked as a stone cutter for Adam Ross Cut Stone in Albany since 1958. Stephen had a passion for fishing. He was a very strong rooted family man, focusing on his family and cherishing every moment spent with them. Stephen is predeceased by his brother, Jozsef Bencze and his sister, Margit Bencze. Stephen is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years Maria Toth Bencze of Waterford; his beloved children, Steven Bencze of Waterford, Anna Maria Bencze Pantuosco and her husband Gregory of Rotterdam, Robert Bencze and his wife Mary of Poolville, N.Y. and Thomas Bencze and his wife Janelle of Rotterdam. Born in Portsmouth, N.H., he was the son of Ruth Jones Cesare of Cohoes and the late Richard L. Bowden. He was the stepson of the late John H. Cesare. He had lived in Latham and in Cohoes for the past several years. He was a communicant of St. Ambrose Church in Latham. He had worked at Garden Way, the Record Newspapers, Times Union, Star Taxi, NYS OGS, Memorial Hospital and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He was a member of Cohoes Caretakers and Cohoes Senior Citizens. Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife, Mary E. LeMay Bowden; a son, John J. Bowden; his stepchildren, Deborah Gagnon, Eugene J. Garneau and John F. Brennan. COHOES Edward J. Britt, 88, of Standish Street, and former resident of Stillwater, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at the Stratton V.A. Medical Center, Albany, after a long illness. Born in Stillwater on Christmas Day 1915, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Ella Cunningham Britt. During World War II, Mr. Britt enlisted in the U.S. Army and participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy. He was a textile worker for the former Reis's Mill in Waterford for many years before retiring. He was predeceased by his brothers, Lloyd and Raymond Britt. Survivors include his sisters and their husbands, Jean and Albert Osborn of Stillwater, Dorothy and Thomas Santa Barbara of Saratoga Springs; and a brother, Vincent Britt of Stillwater; along with nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews. Mrs. Bruni was born in Albany and was raised at the Albany Home for Children. She worked many years at Montgomery Ward, where she was a member of the Teamsters Union. In later years, she and her husband owned and operated Dairy Queens in Hudson and Ghent, N.Y. She was active in the Widows Support Group, and at the Parsons Child and Family Center (formerly the Albany Home for Children). Betty was the wife of the late James Bruni. She is survived by her children Nikki Torchia and James Bruni; her stepmother, Betty Elder; her brothers, Robert Elder, Louis Doukas and George Doukas; her sisters, Barbara Fuller and Mary Ann Downing; her grandchildren, George and Heather Whitcomb, and Matthew and Dylan Torchia. HOOSICK FALLS Eldora Adelaine Kronenbitter Decker, 90, formerly of Grogan Road in Pittstown, died on Thursday, September 2, 2004 at the Danforth Adult Care Center where she has been a resident since June of 1998. Born in New York City in 1914, she was the daughter of the late William and Dora Sophie Hoppmann Kronenbitter. She was the loving wife of the late Frederick H. Decker who died June 8, 2001. They were married in Staten Island in 1942, where they lived for many years. Eldora moved from Carmel, N.Y. to Pittstown in 1968. Mrs. Decker attended Curtis High School in Staten Island. She worked for Western Electric while living on Staten Island and helped her late husband, who was the caretaker of the Herbert Carlbach Estate in Rye, N.Y. while living there. Eldora was a nurses aide at the Bennington Convalescent Center retiring in 1982. She loved cooking and baking and being involved with the Boy Scouts and her church. Survivors include five nieces and two nephews. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 18 at 2 p.m. in the Dover Plains Cemetery in Dover Plains, N.Y. Mr. MacFarland was born in Tucson, Ariz. and resided in Clarksville for the past 12 years. He was a known antique art restorator, and school monitor at the Bethlehem Central High School. He was a man of quiet strength. He found happiness in giving to others, had a deep respect for animals and was devoted to his family. His unique sense of humor and outlook on life brought smiles to all who knew him. He was a talented artist who could see the light out of darkness in all aspects of life. On October 6, 1940, she married Daniel John Moriarty. A longtime Delmar resident and an avid horsewoman, she was always interested in world affairs and politics. Published in the Albany Times Union on 9/9/2004. Powers III, Michael ALBANY Michael Preston Powers III, 44, died on September 4, 2004 suddenly at Albany Medical Center Hospital. Mike was born in Colo. on November 9, 1959 and spent his youth in a small town just outside of Portland, Ore. where he enjoyed playing football and snow skiing. As an adult, he ventured across the United States and arrived in Albany in 1993 in time for the Tulip Fest which became a favorite annual event for Mike. He briefly worked for Hewitts Garden Center in Latham and was a school bus driver for Northland Transportation in Scotia. Mike is survived by his sister, Laurie Porter and her husband Rich of Sarasota, Fla. Mike searched for almost 20 years in hopes of finding his family. Laurie and Mike finally were reunited last year. Mike also has three sisters, Karen, Robin and Ellen. And several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his very special friend, Carol Ryan of Niskayuna. Mike has finally found the peace that he was searching for his entire life. Those that knew Mike will miss him but are comforted by the fact that he is finally at rest. A special thanks is extended to the staff at Albany Medical Center who, with their help and understanding, allowed Mike to have a peaceful and dignified transition. Radica, Sister Stephanie MENANDS Daughter of Charity Sister Stephanie Radica died September 8, 2004 at St. Louise House. Gaetana Radica was born in Buffalo, N.Y. in 1917 to Stephana and Joseph Radica and grew up in Buffalo with three brothers and a sister. Gaetana entered the Daughters of Charity in 1943 and was given the name of Sister Stephanie. Thirty years of her community life were spent as a pharmacist in St. Joseph's Retreat, Dearborn, Mich. and Seton Hospital, Waterville, Maine. After four years as the assistant administrator of Nazareth Child Care Center, Boston, Mass., Sister was assigned to the pastoral care departments of St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport, Conn. and Good Samaritan Hospital, Pottsville, Pa. For ten years, she was a valued member of these departments, loved by staff and patients alike. She came to St. Louise's House in 1986 because of ill health. She is survived by her devoted nephew, Robert Cornell of Ariz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 11, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the DePaul Provincial House Chapel. Rescott, Ronald H. POESTENKILL Ronald H. Rescott, 71, of James St., died on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at the Community Hospice at Samaritan Hospital after a short illness. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Homer and Olive Toole Rescott and husband of the late Lois St. Pierre Rescott. Ron was a graduate of Averill Park Schools and had resided in Averill Park until 1957 when he moved to Poestenkill. Ron had four years of active duty in the Navy during the Korean War. He had been a submarine electrician (submariner) during his duty time. Ron had worked for General Adeline in Rensselaer for 23 years and then for the NYS Education Department and retired in 1995 from the NYS Social Services Department where he was a computer programmer. Ron was a communicant of St. Henry's Church in Averill Park, was a charter member of the Averill Park Fish and Game Club and was a life member of the Sullivan-Jones VFW Post in Poestenkill. Ron enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing. Survivors include a son, Paul (Wendy) Rescott of West Sand Lake; two daughters, Gail (Larry) Currier of Albany and Renee (Ron) Moltrup of Salem, N.Y.; a sister, Marla Doolittle of Fairbanks, Alaska; four grandchildren, Dan Currier, Sarah Rescott, Katie Currier and Ben Rescott; and his longtime friend, Jane McClellan of Averill Park. Sherwood, age 84, entered into eternal life suddenly on Sunday, September 5, 2004. He resided in Rensselaer until moving to East Greenbush in 1955. He attended Christian Brothers Academy in Albany and was a member of the first graduating class of Siena College in Loudonville where he received a degree in accounting. He was also a N.Y.S. licensed funeral director. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II achieving the rank of Lt. Commander. Following the war, he joined the radio station WOKO where he was in charge of the accounting department. He retired from Thomas A. Edison Industries in 1972 as sales manager for the Albany District. He was a communicant of the Church of the Holy Spirit in East Greenbush. He was the beloved husband of the late Ruth A. Leffler Sherwood and son of the late Thomas A. Sherwood Jr. and Ellen M. Tyndall Sherwood; brother of the late Thos. A. Sherwood III and Helen M. Sherwood; devoted father of James C. and Martha S. Sherwood of Schodack, Dr. Nancy A. Sherwood of Cobleskill, Thomas J. and Cathy Sherwood of East Greenbush and Robert J. Sherwood of Tampa, Fla. Medical Center, Albany, following an extended illness. Born in Waterford, Christmas Day, 1935, he was the son of the late Frederick and Grace Gunther Shovah. A selector and fork lift operator for the former Grand Union Warehouse in Waterford for over 25 years, Jack also was on the maintenance staff of Mechanicville Public Schools for several years before retiring. Enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1956, Specialist 4th, Shovah served with the 801st Engineering Corps in Europe. Jack enjoyed casino gambling, talking with his many friends, neighbors and co-workers, but the true love of his life, were his wife, son and daughter and their families, and especially his adored grandchildren and great-grandson. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Mary Ann D'Ambro Shovah; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kathy Shovah of Clifton Park; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Paul Mickalonis of Mechanicville; six grandchildren, Amber Mickalonis, Brooke Bania, Mitchell Shovah, Elyse Mickalonis, Michael Shovah Jr. and Vanessa Mickalonis; and a great-grandson, Tyler. Starowicz, 78, of State Route 8, and former longtime resident of Warrensburg, died Monday morning, September 6, 2004 at Glens Falls Hospital, after a long illness. Born in Wyco, W.Va., April 9, 1926, Joseph was an electrician who was a self-employed contractor and had worked on a number of contracting projects throughout northern New York State. An outdoorsman, Joseph enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, and loved to tinker with and invent or improvise anything. He was predeceased by a son, Larry Starowicz. Mrs. Sutherland was born June 7, 1922 in Glendola, N.Y., the daughter of the late Charles H. Taylor and Margaret Humphrey Taylor. She retired in 1983 after 30 years of employment. Carole worked as a beautician in Albany and, for a short time, she worked as a real estate agent. She was a member of the Modern Maturity, Harvest Years and the Wyoming United Methodist Church. She enjoyed doing crafts, artwork and reading. Mrs. Sutherland is survived by her husband of 64 years, Edward M. Sutherland; her daughter, Donna L. Egerson and her husband Stan of Camden, Del.; her son, Jeal E. Sutherland and his wife Jenise of Schenectady; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three nieces and one nephew. Williams Wandell, 81, formerly of Raymertown and Cohoes, died Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at Evergreen Commons Health Care Facility in East Greenbush, N.Y. embraced by her loving family. Born in North Bingham, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Merle and Angie Bacon Williams and wife of the late Clayton Wandell. Meredith was raised in Spencer, Pa., where she received her education. She had been an area resident for many years. While living in Cohoes, Meredith was very active in the former Cohoes YWCA, the Home Bureau, now Cooperative Extension, and was instrumental in the formation of Girl Scout Troop 47 in Cohoes. She was employed as a supervisor for many years with the former Montgomery Wards in Menands and also worked in an area bridal shop. In 1966, Meredith relocated to Raymertown where she enjoyed working the family farm until 1992. Meredith is survived by her devoted children, June (Edward) Smith of Enfield, Conn., Richard Wandell of Cohoes; her grandchildren, Amy Welliver, Mary Ann Wandell, Kathleen Messier, Jill McLaughlin, Andrew and James Britt; her sister, Helen Sherwood of Conesus, N.Y.; her brothers, Theodore Williams of Mt. Joy, Pa., and Clair Williams of Cicero, N.Y.; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews also survive. She was predeceased by her siblings, Edwin Williams, Mary Coddington, Lois, Paul and George Williams.
