He was a retired corrections officer from the Twin Rivers Correction Facility in Monroe. WATERFORD Mildred E. Stiles Clement, 84, of Northside in Waterford, died on Friday September 10, 2004 at her residence after a long illness. She was born on August 16, 1920 in Cohoes and was the daughter of the late Alfred and Hazel Francisco Stiles. She was a graduate of the Waterford High School and had attended Albany Business College. Mrs. Clement was the beloved wife of Edward G. Clement, whom she married on May 2, 1942. She began a 35 year career working at the Clement Frame & Art Shop in Troy where she very much enjoyed the interaction with her customers. She had a knack for choosing just the right framing for every item that came in. She loved cooking and baking pies, growing flowers and large family dinners each Sunday and holiday. She especially enjoyed vacations in Maine with her family and was a long time parishioner of St. Anne's Church in Waterford, until it closed recently. In her early years, Mildred was a tomboy and later had six boys of her own to contend with. She is the devoted mother of Edward Ned G. (Grace) Clement Jr. of Prospect, Maine, Robert Bob A. Clement of Port St. Lucy, Fla., James R. (Mary Anne) Clement Sr. of Ballston Lake, Thomas A. (Judy) Clement of Cohoes, Raymond J. Clement of Albany and Daniel C. She had been employed for many years by the Albany County Liquor Authority as a secretary. She was a communicant of the Church of the Sacred Heart and a member of its senior citizens group, the Albany Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Menands Senior Citizens and the Menands V.F.W. Ericksen, Maila LATHAM Maila Ericksen, 74, of Latham, beloved wife of the late Rolf Ericksen, died Monday, September 6, 2004 at the Eddy-Ford Nursing Home in Cohoes. Born and educated in Brooklyn, she was the daughter of the late Karl and Helmi Talvio. She was the valedictorian of Manual Training High School, class of 1948 in Brooklyn. She had resided in Latham since 1989 and had previously lived in Washington Township, N.J. She was employed by the Clarkstown School District in New City, N.Y. as a secretary for over 15 years. Maila was a member of the Sons of Norway in Greenville, N.Y. She loved reading and crossword puzzles. Maila was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She faced challenging times with a positive attitude, always a smile and kind words for everyone. Maila took the time and care to remember each and every person she met by name. She will be sorely missed. The family wants to thank all of the staff at Albany Memorial Hospital, the Eddy Rehab Center and the Eddy Ford Nursing Home for their loving care to Maila. Fredette, 88, formerly of Carondolet Apartments in Latham and Cohoes, died Friday, September 10, 2004 at the Schuyler Ridge Nursing Facility in Clifton Park. Born and educated in Cohoes, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Clara Gagnon West. She attended St. Marie's School in Cohoes and resided in Cohoes for most of her life, moving to Carondolet in 1997. She was a former communicant of St. Marie's Church where she was a member of the Ladies of St. Ann. While living in Latham, she was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. She was the former owner and operator of Fredette's Laundry and Cleaning in Cohoes for many years. She was previously employed by the NYS Department of Audit and Control as a data entry operator for 15 years and retired in 1983. Prior to that, she was the store manager of the White Eagle Bakery in Watervliet for 15 years. She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas L. Fredette who died in 1982. Survivors include her loving children, Joan and her husband John Donlon of Troy, Frances and her husband John Renas of Troy, Thomas D. and his wife Louise Fredette of Latham; her sister, Jeanette Durrant of Saratoga; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Mildred was predeceased by her loving son, Wayne Fredette in 1997. Mrs. Fuess was born in Albany, the daughter of the late Jared Harry Reynolds and Pearl Edgarton Reynolds. She attended Milne High School and was graduated from New York State College for Teachers, now the University at Albany. Mrs. Fuess was married to the late Rev. Forest M. Fuess and was active in the churches served by Rev. Fuess in N.Y. and N.J.. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Nassau, the United Methodist Women, Church Women United and University at Albany Alumni Society. Mrs. Fuess was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor Reynolds and a brother, Leland D. Reynolds. Gaffney, 72 , loving husband of 43 years to Anne and beloved father of Daniel Edward (Tiffani), George Raymond, Patricia Anne Lanotte (Michael), Jacqueline Adele (Jeff Cohen), Katherine Jo (Erik Smith), Margaret Ellen Meg (Chip Smith) and David P. Thomas, died peacefully at home Thursday, September 9, 2004 after a courageous battle against cancer. He was a proud father known as Jack to his children and friends, and Papa to his grandchildren, Hannah Grace Cohen, Sarah Elizabeth Cohen, Mackenzi Helen Beisler, Patrick Aiden Gaffney Anthony John Lanotte, Lauren Alexis Lanotte, Jack Guerin Smith and Ashley Elizabeth Smith. A longtime resident of Albany, N.Y., Mr. Gaffney was born to Patrick and Grace McConnell Gaffney in the Bronx on July 10, 1932. He grew up in Hyde Park. He served in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956 and received the National Defense Service Medal for service during the Korean War. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in history at Siena College in Loudonville. Jack worked as a social worker, a claims adjuster and negotiator before retiring in 2002. He coached little league and Babe Ruth baseball. He ran Friday Basketball at Westmere Elementary for many years. He coached CYO basketball as well. He made sure kids from every background had a chance to play. His hobbies were sports, his family and his dogs. He was a friend to all those he came to know. He quietly touched the lives of many. Jack loved politics and made many friends in the community. His warmth, energy, compassion and ability to connect with people made him a leader. He empowered his children to learn, teach, nurture and make significant contributions to the world in the areas of finance, the environment, law, social services, and education. He had only just begun to make his mark on his grandchildren, who were blessed to have such a remarkable role model. He taught them the importance of family, faith and good will toward others. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Patrick. He is survived by his brother George R. Gaffney (Francis); and his nephews, Peter and Kevin; and niece, Sharon (Jennifer); his brother-in-law, Edward Lee Riter; nephew, Joseph Ritter (Nancy); Anne's children, Linda Thomas and Elizabeth Kiose and her family. Gniewek, 87, died on Friday, September 10, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. He was born on April 11, 1917 in Mechanicville, N.Y. and was the son of the late Joseph and Agnes Coblish Gniewek. Mr. Gniewek and his wife had resided in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. from 1975-1993. He retired as a partner from Ushers Machine and Tool Co., Inc. where he had worked for more than 30 years. Earlier he had worked at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady. He was known as an expert downhill skier. He enjoyed traveling throughout the world to experience skiing at different areas. His greatest love was being with family and his grandchildren. Leon was an avid golfer, enjoyed his vegetable garden and landscaping. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Olga Gniewek; devoted father of Mitzi Gniewek of Clifton Park and Shirley Jones and her husband Gary W. of Ballston Lake; brother of Mary Russell, Helen Vermilyea both of Mechanicville and the late Sophie Petronis, Rose Hopeck, Henry and Roman Gniewek and Dorothy Stah; beloved grandfather of Jennifer, Gary R., Brittany and Elizabeth Jones. Babe served in the U.S. Army and had been employed by Black & White Taxi in Troy as a driver and dispatcher before working as a custodian at the Watervliet Arsenal for 20 years. Maynard Guest M.D., 87, son of the late Carroll Maynard Guest and Gladys Tooker Guest, died on September 10, 2004 at Schuyler Ridge Residential Health Care. Dr. Guest graduated, cum laude, from Amhurst College in 1939 and from the School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania in 1943. He was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha, medical scholastic honorary society. He interned at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in the city of New York. He was a medical resident at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown and the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1950 and re-certified in 1974. He was a lieutenant, jg in the U.S. Navy Reserve in World War II and captain, U.S. Army Reserve, in the Korean War. He practiced medicine in Albany from 1950 until 1983 when he served as executive secretary, New York State Board, Professional Medical Conduct, dealing with professional discipline until 1995. He was co-founder of the Arthritis Clinic at Albany Medical Center Hospital and chairman of the Department of Rheumatology at St. Peter's Hospital. Dr. Guest was associate professor of clinical medicine, Albany Medical College and organized and led a CARE-MEDICO team, representing the Albany Medical College to Algeria in 1963 after withdrawal of the French. He is survived by his wife Madeline Clark Fountain-Guest of Clifton Park; his son, Peter Maynard Guest of Petersburgh, N.Y.; and his step-daughter, Jennifer Brooke Fountain of Cohoes. Committal service with full military honors will be conducted on Thursday, September 16, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. McHugh, 95, formerly of Lexington Parkway, Niskayuna, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at the Guilderland Center Nursing Home. Eleanor was born in Boston, Mass. in 1909, the daughter of Fred and Alice Hayward. She was a graduate of Vassar College. Eleanor was the wife of J. Weir McHugh, who died in Schenectady in 1989. They were married in 1940 and resided locally since 1940. Eleanor had been chairman of the Schenectady County Mental Health Board, president of the Family and Child Service of Schenectady and a member of the state advisory committee on alcoholism. She was a devoted member of the Junior League of Schenectady, the Garden Club of Schenectady, the Mohawk Golf Club and St. George's Episcopal Church. Eleanor is survived by her two sons, Gregory (Keith) McHugh of Denver, Colo. and Peter B. McHugh of Guilderland. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Anna McHugh of New York City, Samuel McHugh of Kingston, Ontario, Erin McHugh of Portland, Ore. and Emilie McHugh of Madison, Wis. He was a graduate of St. John's Academy in Rensselaer. John was an accomplished musician, playing the accordion and was a music teacher for over 50 years. He was retired from the Veterans Hospital in Albany. Mr. Ranellucci was a pioneer of the early days of radio and TV. He had his own program at 18 years of age on WGY radio, his theme song was Hands Across The Table. He was also featured on the Forrest Wilus Radio Program, The Musical Clock. He entertained at summer resorts in the Catskill Mountains and night clubs locally. John was a U.S. Navy musician during World War II and was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church in North Greenbush. He enjoyed cooking, garage sales and spending time with his family. He was proud of his Italian heritage. Husband of 53 years of Harriet Groat Ranellucci of Troy. He has been the sole and primary caregiver to his loving wife and was also husband of the late Agnes Conlon Ranellucci. Roberts, Alfred Jim COEYMANS Alfred Jim Edgar Roberts, September 8, 2004, after a brief illness, has left this life he enjoyed so much. Jim was born in 1935 and, despite the depression and World War II, remembered his childhood with great fondness. After graduating from Port Jervis High School in 1952, he served in the U.S. Air Force. The three years of duty in West Germany during the late 50s were especially good times. Upon his return, he attended college at the University of N.D. and graduated with a bachelor of arts in 1962. Once back in N.Y., he found work with Albany County and then the N.Y.S. Department of Social Services. In 1963, he met and married Charlotte Jane Reed, the love of his life, and began raising a family. Over the next 40 years, he worked in state government and spent his free time with his family and the neighborhood children, teaching a generation the intricacies of baseball and softball. When he retired after 30 years of service, he spent the remaining years of his life doing what he loved, hiking with his dog, attending local sporting events and regional theatre and, most of all, the Saratoga Flat Track. His kindness, generosity and irreverent sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew and loved him. Special thanks to his dear companion, Lan Ying Fan. Rogers, Frances KINDERHOOK Frances Rogers, 72, of Kinderhook, passed away Thursday, September 9, 2004 in St. Peter's Hospital, Albany. Born December 3, 1931 in Schenectady, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Daniel and the late Callie (Miller) Casey and the wife of the late Joseph Vincent Rogers. Before retiring, Mrs. Rogers was a factory technician for over 20 years for Crellin Plastics in Chatham. She is survived by one daughter, Michele Speer of Valatie; two sisters, Margaret A. and her husband Ed Monty of Colonie and Betty Yakman of Schenectady; one brother, Martin H. and his wife Patricia Casey of Stuyvesant; one granddaughter, Angelica Speer; several nieces and nephews. Ezra (Mickey) Schwalb, age 94, of the Evergreen Commons in East Greenbush, formerly of the Ohav Sholom Apartments on Krumkill Road in Albany, died Thursday, September 9, 2004 at the nursing home. Mr. Schwalb was born in Salem, Mass. and resided in the Metropolitan N.Y. area before relocating to the Capital District. While residing in N.Y., he was the proprietor of a hat store. He had also been employed for many years at the Albert Einstein Hospital in New York where he had been supervisor of the maintenance department. One of Mickey's favorite past times was listening to music. He will be remembered by his family for the wonderful stories he told. He was married to Betty Schwalb until her passing in 1990. He is survived by many adoring nieces and nephews and their children and his dear friend and care giver Fannie Bea Butler and her family of Albany. He was also predeceased by four sisters. LATHAM Sigmund Stanley Zeglen, 81, entered into eternal rest suddenly on September 9, 2004 at Ellis Center in Schenectady, N.Y. Born in Schenectady, he was the son of the late Stanley and Lucy Zeglen. A Sparrowbush Road, Latham resident since 1932, he had been engaged in dairy farming and for many years operated a retail dairy business in the Tri City area. Sig was a graduate of Cohoes High School and class of 1944 at Siena College. He was an employee of the General Electric Co. Silicone Products Business Division in Waterford, N.Y. and retired in 1986 after 36 years of service. While working in the gas chromotography and quality control laboratory, he achieved numerous awards and designations. He traveled extensively for the company. Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Loretta and John Minkiewicz of Niskayuna; nephews, John (Dianna) Minkiewicz of Latham, Paul (Cindy) Minkiewicz of Niskayuna; and niece, Cynthia (James) Magenis of Slingerlands.
