Betty Louise Miller Barthell, born August 20, 1926 in Danville, died September 6, 2004 in Austin, Texas. The daughter of Opal Smith and Fay Miller of Peoria, Ill., she was preceded in death by her husband Franklin H. Barthell Jr. of Peoria. She is survived by her children, Nancy Fox of the Woodlands, Texas, Franklin III of Lawrence, Kan., John F. of Denver, Colo. and Daniel P. of Austin, Texas; and five grandchildren. Mrs. Barthell graduated from Peoria High School and attended Ward-Belmont College in Nashville, Tenn. and the University of Maryland. She was previously involved with the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and had been a docent at Laguna Gloria Art Museum in Austin. WATERFORD Mildred E. Stiles Clement, 84, of Northside in Waterford, died on Friday September 10, 2004 at her residence after a long illness. She was born on August 16, 1920 in Cohoes and was the daughter of the late Alfred and Hazel Francisco Stiles. She was a graduate of the Waterford High School and had attended Albany Business College. Mrs. Clement was the beloved wife of Edward G. Clement, whom she married on May 2, 1942. She began a 35 year career working at the Clement Frame & Art Shop in Troy where she very much enjoyed the interaction with her customers. She had a knack for choosing just the right framing for every item that came in. She loved cooking and baking pies, growing flowers and large family dinners each Sunday and holiday. She especially enjoyed vacations in Maine with her family and was a long time parishioner of St. Anne's Church in Waterford, until it closed recently. In her early years, Mildred was a tomboy and later had six boys of her own to contend with. She is the devoted mother of Edward Ned G. (Grace) Clement Jr. of Prospect, Maine, Robert Bob A. Clement of Port St. Lucy, Fla., James R. (Mary Anne) Clement Sr. of Ballston Lake, Thomas A. (Judy) Clement of Cohoes, Raymond J. Clement of Albany and Daniel C. Loretta worked as a clerk in the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles for over 21 years before her retirement. Born January 23, 1929 in Glens Falls, he was the son of the late Napoleon and Mary Fiore. Mr. Fiore was a graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Glens Falls, Class of 1946, and Siena College, Class of 1961. He was in the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War. He lived in Halfmoon for the past 40 years, working at the Watervliet Arsenal as a management analyst, retiring in 1988 after 26 years of service. He loved camping, traveling, gardening and golf. Survived by his wife, Ann G. Fiore of Halfmoon; three sons, Vincent A. Fiore of the Bronx, Paul A. Fiore of North Troy and Matthew J. Fiore of Halfmoon; two daughters, Mary C. Fredette, 88, formerly of Carondolet Apartments in Latham and Cohoes, died Friday, September 10, 2004 at the Schuyler Ridge Nursing Facility in Clifton Park. Born and educated in Cohoes, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Clara Gagnon West. She attended St. Marie's School in Cohoes and resided in Cohoes for most of her life, moving to Carondolet in 1997. She was a former communicant of St. Marie's Church where she was a member of the Ladies of St. Ann. While living in Latham, she was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. She was the former owner and operator of Fredette's Laundry and Cleaning in Cohoes for many years. She was previously employed by the NYS Department of Audit and Control as a data entry operator for 15 years and retired in 1983. Prior to that, she was the store manager of the White Eagle Bakery in Watervliet for 15 years. She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas L. Fredette who died in 1982. Survivors include her loving children, Joan and her husband John Donlon of Troy, Frances and her husband John Renas of Troy, Thomas D. and his wife Louise Fredette of Latham; her sister, Jeanette Durrant of Saratoga; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Mildred was predeceased by her loving son, Wayne Fredette in 1997. Swift Frinks, 67, died suddenly Saturday, September 11, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital with her family at her side. Marilyn was born in Albany and lived in the area all her life except for two years when she lived in Frederick, Md. Marilyn is survived by her beloved husband of 45 years, Ronald Michael Frinks; her children Andrew Michael (Lisa) Frinks of Pittsfield, Mass., Sharon Elizabeth (Thomas) Chiarella of Redwood City, Calif. and Donna Ann (Leah) Frinks of Selkirk; her brother, William Raymond (Miriam) Swift of Glenmont; her sister-in-law, Norma Swift of Colonie; her grandchildren, Sydney Teresa and Collin Andrew Frinks, and Isabel Liv and Jenna Marie Chiarella. She was the beloved aunt to 26 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Eugene Swift and niece, Linda Swift. Marilyn was a devoted wife, mother, friend and grandmother and will be dearly missed. She was an avid reader, enjoyed the beach especially Cape Cod, loved to bowl and never missed a chance to play cards or a scratch-off lottery ticket. Though she never traveled by airplane before the age of 50, she made up for lost time with trips to the Bahamas, St. Maarten, the Canadian Rockies, Hawaii, Alaska, California and the Southwest Canyon lands. Marilyn had a great sense of humor and was quick with an entertaining story, especially ghost stories for her grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking for her family and was known for her wonderful lasagna, apple pie and Thanksgiving turkey. Christmas was important to her and she spoiled her family with presents - each year topping the last. She also faithfully remembered birthdays including those of all of her nieces and nephews. She was employed by the New York Telephone Co. in Albany, the Army East Coast Relay Station in Frederick, Md. and by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association in Delmar where for 23 years she was the administrative assistant to Executive Director, Dr. Sandy Scott. She was a member and secretary of the Hudson Valley Community College Women's Club and a member and recording secretary for the Fort Orange Chapter #1593 of the AARP. She had a strong faith in God and was a communicant for many years of St. Teresa of Avila Church in Albany, and most recently of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Delmar. Gaffney, 72 , loving husband of 43 years to Anne and beloved father of Daniel Edward (Tiffani), George Raymond, Patricia Anne Lanotte (Michael), Jacqueline Adele (Jeff Cohen), Katherine Jo (Erik Smith), Margaret Ellen Meg (Chip Smith) and David P. Thomas, died peacefully at home Thursday, September 9, 2004 after a courageous battle against cancer. He was a proud father known as Jack to his children and friends, and Papa to his grandchildren, Hannah Grace Cohen, Sarah Elizabeth Cohen, Mackenzi Helen Beisler, Patrick Aidan Gaffney, Anthony John Lanotte, Lauren Alexis Lanotte, Jack Guerin Smith and Ashley Elizabeth Smith. A longtime resident of Albany, N.Y., Mr. Gaffney was born to Patrick and Grace McConnell Gaffney in the Bronx on July 10, 1932. He grew up in Hyde Park. He served in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956 and received the National Defense Service Medal for service during the Korean War. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in history at Siena College in Loudonville. Jack worked as a social worker, a claims adjuster and negotiator before retiring in 2002. He coached little league and Babe Ruth baseball. He ran Friday Night Basketball at Westmere Elementary for many years. He coached CYO basketball as well. He made sure kids from every background had a chance to play. His hobbies were sports, his family and his dogs. He was a friend to all those he came to know. He quietly touched the lives of many. Jack loved politics and made many friends in the community. His warmth, energy, compassion and ability to connect with people made him a leader. He empowered his children to learn, teach, nurture and make significant contributions to the world in the areas of finance, the environment, law, social services, and education. He had only just begun to make his mark on his grandchildren, who were blessed to have such a remarkable role model. He taught them the importance of family, faith and good will toward others. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Patrick. He is survived by his brother George R. Gaffney (Frances); and his nephews, Peter and Kevin; and niece, Sharon (Jennifer); his brother-in-law, Edward Lee Ritter; nephew, Joseph Ritter (Nancy); Anne's children, Linda Thomas and Elizabeth Kiose and her family. He was born on April 11, 1917 in Mechanicville, N.Y. and was the son of the late Joseph and Agnes Coblish Gniewek. Mr. Gniewek and his wife had resided in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. from 1975-1993. He retired as a partner from Ushers Machine and Tool Co., Inc. where he had worked for more than 30 years. Earlier he had worked at the General Electric Co. in Schenectady. He was known as an expert downhill skier. He enjoyed traveling throughout the world to experience skiing at different areas. His greatest love was being with family and his grandchildren. Leon was an avid golfer, enjoyed his vegetable garden and landscaping. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to Olga Gniewek; devoted father of Mitzi Gniewek of Clifton Park and Shirley Jones and her husband Gary W. of Ballston Lake; brother of Mary Russell, Helen Vermilyea both of Mechanicville and the late Sophie Petronis, Rose Hopeck, Henry and Roman Gniewek and Dorothy Stah; beloved grandfather of Jennifer, Gary R., Brittany and Elizabeth Jones. Goodrich, John Babe GREEN ISLAND John Babe Goodrich, 75, of Swan Street, Green Island, died Thursday, September 9, 2004 at his home. He was the husband of the late Marjorie Watson Goodrich. Born in Troy, he was son of the late Jonah and Elizabeth Bacon Goodrich. Babe served in the U.S. Army and had been employed by Black & White Taxi in Troy as a driver and dispatcher before working as a custodian at the Watervliet Arsenal for 20 years. Survivors include his brother, Joseph Goodrich of Colonie; two nieces, Patricia (John) Geier of Rensselaer and Cynthia (Stephen) Gorzynski of Colonie; also survived by several grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews. Babe also leaves behind his best friend and constant companion, his beloved dog, Cody. Goska, Ralph T. ROTTERDAM Ralph T. Goska, 67, of Princetown Road, passed away at his home September 10, 2004, surrounded by his loving family. Ralph was born in Saratoga Springs on October 5, 1936, a son of the late Anthony and Florence Wodarczak Goska. As a child, Ralph and his family moved to Rotterdam, where he would become a longtime resident. He was educated in Rotterdam schools and was a graduate of the former Draper High School, Class of 1954. Following high school, Ralph enlisted in the United States Army, honorably serving from 1955 to 1957. Upon returning from the Army, he entered college, earning an associates degree in mechanical technology from Hudson Valley Community College. Ralph graduated in 1959. For over 25 years, he was employed for Tougher Industries (in Menands) as a sheet metal worker until his retirement in 1995. Ralph was a proud member of the Local #83 Sheet Metal Workers. Following his retirement from Tougher, Ralph continued to work part-time as a handyman and courier for the Sunmark Federal Credit Union on Broadway, Schenectady. He was employed with Sunmark until the onset of his illness. A wonderful handyman and an avid fisherman, Ralph was truly a devoted helper and friend to all who knew him. More than anything in the world, Ralph was a loving husband, father and grandfather who would do anything to spend as much time with them as possible. In his own personal time, he loved to watch the Yankees on TV, except when his grandchildren had their own baseball, softball, soccer and football games going on! Survivors include his wife, Anna DeBlasio Goska, whom he married September 6, 1959. Mrs. Kaufman had lived in Halfmoon since 1988 and was previously of Latham. She had worked as the district assistant for Walmart in East Greenbush for 11 years. Earlier, she was employed as office manager for Golden Krust Bakery in Cohoes for over 25 years. Carm was a caring, considerate woman who believed in the importance of family and valued her career. She was the beloved wife of Charles Chuck E. Kaufman; devoted mother of Mark (Kathy) Grudecki of Cincinnati, Ohio and Christine Grudecki of Chicago, Ill.; stepmother of Felicia Kaufman of Manchester, Conn. and Jennifer Topetro of Ballston Lake; sister of Edward (Marilyn) Carmody of Troy, Robert (Geri) Carmody of Latham and Carole (John) Wojtowicz of Halfmoon; cousin of James Carmody of Halfmoon; two step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive her. Layden of Whitehall, N.Y., passed away in the presence of her family at the Glens Falls Hospital on Saturday, September 11, 2004 after a long illness. She was born on June 24, 1923 in Granville, N.Y., the daughter of Robert R. Lewis and Agnes (Sears) Lewis. On October 23, 1954, Eleanor was united in marriage to her husband, Attorney John J. Layden of Whitehall, at St. Mary's Church in Granville, N.Y. They would have been married 50 years this October. Prior to her marriage, Eleanor was employed for many years in the office of Telescope Folding Furniture Company in Granville, N.Y. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. (Agar) Miller, 79, formerly of Albany, passed away at his home in Deland, Fla. on September 7, 2004. He was the son of the late Archie A. Miller Sr. and the late Mary J. (Bucci) Miller. He was the second of six brothers and sisters. Mr. Miller spent four years with the Navy during World War II and later re-enlisted in the USAF. He received eight medals of accommodation during his time of service and retired as master sergeant. He relocated to Orlando and was employed by the US Postal Service for 24 years. Silicone Products Business Division in Waterford, N.Y. and retired in 1986 after 36 years of service. While working in the gas chromotography and quality control laboratory, he achieved numerous awards and designations. He traveled extensively for the company.
