Bosco, Joseph Anthony GUILDERLAND, N.Y. Joseph Anthony Bosco, 72, of Guilderland, died peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital, Thursday, August 25, 2005, with his beloved family by his side after a courageous fight against Leukemia. Born in Bronx, N.Y., he was the son of the late Anthony L. Bosco and Mary Salerno Bosco. Joseph was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School in New York City. He received his BA with honors from Ohio University, his master's from Seton Hall University in 1960 and his Ph.D from Teachers College of Columbia University in 1967, and was also a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Joseph taught English at Hackensack High School and Pascack Valley High School and in 1967 became an assistant professor in the education department at SUNY Albany. He retired in 1990 and stared Organizational Support Services, a consulting business evaluating educational programs. Most recently he was chancellor for the InterAmerican University, a position that had him traveling to China and other Far East countries, working with the U.N. to further education in third-world countries. He also taught at St. Rose and Bryant and Stratton. Joseph was a member of Christ the King Church. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a board member of Community Care Givers and a member of the Italian American Heritage Foundation. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Concetta Tina DiPierno Bosco; four sons, Joseph A. Bosco and his wife Amy of Irvington, N.Y., Paul N. Bosco and his wife Ann Marie of Guilford, Conn., Thomas R. Bosco and his wife Tamara of New York City and Andrew D. Bosco and his wife Kara of Pittsford, N.Y.; his brother, Anthony J. Bosco and his wife Hilda of Leonia, N.J.; two sisters, Grace Smith and her husband Robert of Hackettstown, N.J. and Donna Fina and her husband Michael of Winston Salem, N.C.; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Peter and Elizabeth DiPierno of Manchester, N.J. Born in New Baltimore, Marguerite lived and was raised in Watervliet and attended Watervliet schools. She was a cook and housekeeper for many years and worked for Rick's Tavern in Troy, Barberry Ice Cream Parlor, and lastly Evens/Baken Dental office. She loved doing cross word puzzles, sewing and crocheting, cooking and spending time with her family and her church family. She was a past member of Grace Methodist Church in Troy and the United Methodist Church of Lansingburgh. Cooke Bunk, of Voorheesville, died on her 91st birthday, August 26, 2005 at Community Hospice of Albany. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and raised in Alcove, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Lillian Clark Arntzen. Ruth moved to Albany in 1935 and Voorheesville in 1975. She was employed as a computer coder for Farm Family Insurance in Glenmont, retiring in 1979. Ruth was a communicant of St. Matthew's Church in Voorheesville. Ruth had a love for life and for her family that was unconditional. She was a great mother, a talented horticulturist and painter but, most of all, she loved making a home and bringing love to her family. Widow of the late James W. Burian was born in Passaic, N.J. in 1927 of Czech parents and attended Clifton, N.J. schools. He graduated from Rutgers in 1949, after taking 18 months leave when he served in the U.S. Regular Army with the troops of occupation in Germany. He received his M.A. in comparative literature from Columbia University in 1950, concentrating on dramatic literature and theatre production. During the 1949-50 year, he was acting in an off-Broadway production, where he met his future wife, Grayce Susan DeLeon. They married in June of 1951. In October of that year, he was recalled to a second tour of active duty as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. In June of 1955, Burian completed his Ph.D. at Cornell University in the English department, majoring in dramatic literature and production. While there, he was a teaching fellow and an instructor for the last year. In the fall of 1955, he was appointed as assistant professor of English at what was then the State College for Teachers and later became SUNY Albany, teaching mainly dramatic literature courses, theatre history, criticism, and theory, as well as directing play productions. He was producer-director of the university's Arena Summer State for eight seasons. In 1963, he became a full professor. Over the years, he and his wife also acted and directed in community theatre and, for six summers, acted in the outdoor drama of the Cherokee in N.C., Unto These Hills. Since the 1960s, Burian had been involved in active scholarly research, writing and publications and had five book-length and many dozen article-length studies published in the United States as well as abroad, most of them dealing with Czech theatre and international stage design, most as results from various research grants (Fulbright and Irex) during leaves of absence years. In 1961-62, he was a visiting professor at the University of California in Berkeley and, after becoming professor emeritus at the University at Albany in 1992, he continued full-time adjunct teaching in other area colleges as well as pursuing research in the Czech Republic. In 1995, he taught an intensive eight-week seminar at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He had also directed classics for Theatre Voices in Albany and a staged reading for Schenectady Jewish Community Center. In the fall of 1998, Jarka and Grayce Burian received a Regional Arts Award from the Albany-Schenectady League of Arts for their lifetime contributions to the arts. Burian was also a champion Master Swimmer, winning hundreds of ribbons and medals throughout his life. He is survived by his wife of 54 year, Grayce, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many, many friends, both in the U.S. and the Czech Republic. Born and educated in Willsboro, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Jay and Leita Shephard Mero. Mrs. Carey was a graduate of the nursing program at Child's Hospital in 1953. She spent numerous years in private duty nursing and also worked at all of the Albany hospitals throughout her career beginning at Brady Hospital. She also worked at the Villa Mary Immaculate Nursing Home and taught nursing at the Glenmont Job Corp. Mrs. Carey enjoyed nursing and was good at her job. She believed taking care of her family was her most important job and she adored her sons and grandchildren. Wife of the late Arthur E. Carey; mother of Richard M. (Cheryl) Carey of Colonie, Edward A. (Linda) Carey of East Greenbush, Jeffrey A. (Christine) Carey of Schenectady and the late Jay T. EAST GREENBUSH Joseph William DeCrescenzo Sr., 57, died unexpectedly on Friday, August 26, 2005 at Albany Memorial Hospital after being stricken at his home. Born in Troy on August 29, 1947, he was the dear son of the late Patrick DeCrescenzo and Bessie Luce DeCrescenzo and stepson of the late Roland Diotte. A graduate of Watervliet High School, Joe graduated from Hudson Valley Community College and served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged from service on June 15, 1969 with the rank of sergeant and received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He returned to Watervliet and on April 11, 1970, was married to his beloved wife, Patricia A. Wade-DeCrescenzo at St. Michael's Church in Troy. Following his marriage, he resided in Troy and later moved to East Greenbush. Joe was an assistant vice president with Key Bank where he worked for 23 years. He later worked briefly for SEFCU and the State Department of Taxation and Finance before accepting the position of upstate program manager of the community services bureau of the state Division of Housing and Community Renewal, a post he held for the past five years. A devoted family man, Joe loved being with all of his family and received special pleasure and enjoyment from the times he spent with his grandchildren. In addition to his family, Joe also enjoyed league bowling, camping, fishing and golfing. In recent years, he enjoyed playing golf with his son Joe Jr. in the Glass Lake Men's League at the Burden Lake Country Club. He had also been a member of the Watervliet Lodge of Elks. In addition to his wife, Joe is also survived by his daughter, Maria DeCrescenzo (Bob Durivage) of North Greenbush; his son, Joseph DeCrescenzo Jr. of Troy; his grandchildren, Douglas Donovan Jr., Stephanie Donovan, Sarah Donovan, Cassandra DeCrescenzo and Courtney Durivage; his sister, Patricia DeCrescenzo-Burke (late husband Kenneth) of Watervliet; his brothers, Daniel DeCrescenzo (Frances) of Watervliet, James DeCrescenzo (Linda) of Delmar and David DeCrescenzo (Denise) of Green Island; his father and mother-in-law, William H. and Ruth Wade of Englewood, Fla.; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, William F. She was born in Veitshoechheim, Germany on December 8, 1916, a daughter of the late Gottfried and Lina Schaeflein Sauer. She had been a Tillson resident from 1939 to 1988. She came to the United States at the age of 10 and became a U.S. citizen in 1941. Prior to her retirement, she was employed as a seamstress in the garment manufacturing industry and, as a member of the ILGWU, was employed at several area manufacturing companies. In 1936, she married Joseph Engert, who died in 1991. Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn McCarthy of Poughkeepsie and Joanne Rogers of West Sand Lake; also surviving are four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Frank was educated in the Watervliet Public School System and was a self-employed produce wholesaler at the Menands Market for 67 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy; a member of the Menands Fire Co., Watervliet Lodge 1500 B.P.O.E.; life member of the Italian Community Center; member of the former C.R.S. Post V.F.W.; and member of the Watervliet V.F.W. A life long resident of Cohoes, Gen was a bookkeeper and cashier at the John Guzek store on Willow St. which she co-owned with her family. She spent many years assisting her late sister Helen with her catering business, Helen's Catering. Gen enjoyed crossword puzzles and photography. She was a communicant of St. Michael's Church in Cohoes. She is survived by her devoted daughter Leslie Almori and her husband Regio of South Lee, Mass., her cherished granddaughter Jennifer Andersen; her brothers, Henry Guzek of Cohoes, John Guzek of Watervliet and Anthony Guzek of Bradenton, Fla. Born at Albany Memorial Hospital, Harry grew up in Castleton and Rensselaer. He was the son of the late John Jay and Henrietta Mae (Bladoe) Kerker. Harry married Mary A. Amitrano of Middletown and moved to Colonie where he resided until his death. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stationed at Stewart Field at West Point and serving his country in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Harry worked as an equipment operator for Niagara Mohawk for 38 years. He was a member of the Niagara Mohawk 25 Year Club and the Pensioners Club, and also the VFW. Harry was an avid bowler and golfer. Harry is predeceased by his son, Donald J. Kerker, and his brother, John Kerker. Harry leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary A. Kerker; his sons, Harry J. Kerker (Janis) of La Canada, Calif., Richard J. Kerker (Barbara) of Charlton and Robert A. Kerker (Valerie) of Glenville. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Schuyler Anne Kerker, Holland Belle Kerker, Hudson James Kerker and Ashley Lynn Kerker; and many nieces and nephews. COLONIE Robert Lance Kistler, 66, died on August 25, 2005 at home with his family and friends at his side. Bob was born on April 10, 1939 to Robert Henry Kistler and Ruth Little Kistler, both deceased. Bob graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy and Penn State University. He served in the Navy as an antisubmarine warfare/weapons officer and as an instructor at the U.S. Fleet Sonar School. While at Penn State, Bob was recruited by the New York State Health Department, where he worked from 1967 to 1995. Serving as a member of the commissioner's staff and as director of the institutional management group, Bob led the redevelopment of state hospitals, including two research medical facilities at Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo and Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw. He also led the development of a multifacility nursing home program for New York State veterans. During Bob's tenure, all of these facilities were redeveloped and rebuilt. Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Rosanne Aldwin Kistler; his devoted sons, Robert A. (Tamara) and Charles H. (Yukiyo); stepsons, Douglas Klein (Michelle) and Matthew Klein; grandchildren, Alexander Kistler and Lianne Kistler; and stepmother, Ruth Kistler. Bob retired in 1995. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, duplicate bridge and spending time with his family. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late John LaPosta and Madeline Cupolo LaPosta and husband of Betty Smith LaPosta for 59 years. A former longtime resident of Lansingburgh, he was a graduate of LaSalle Institute. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. Mr. LaPosta was co-proprietor of LaPosta's Confectionery in Troy and LaPosta Bros. Markets in Speigletown and West Sand Lake for 40 years, retiring in 1986. Frank was a member of Lansingburgh Rotary Club, board of directors of Lansingburgh Boys & Girls Club, former member of Troy Knights of Columbus and past grand marshal of the Uncle Sam Birthday Parade in Lansingburgh. Frank was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the sport kings. He enjoyed trips to the casinos and the activities at Columbia Crest Apartments. Latavitz, Zoe MENANDS Daughter of Charity Sister Zoe Latavitz passed away Friday, August 26, 2005 at St. Louise House. She was born in 1911 in Chicago, Ill. to Catherine V. Noroyta and John Latavitz. Sister Zoe grew up with her five brothers and four sisters. She entered the Daughters of Charity on December 31, 1929. Teaching in Utica Catholic Academy and Cathedral School, Syracuse were two of Sister's first assignments. After being trained as a nurse, Sister served in hospitals for more than 50 years. Three of the hospitals were named St. Mary's: Saginaw, Mich., Detroit, Mich. and Troy, N.Y. She also served in St. Margaret's Hospital, Boston, Mass. Her longest mission was at St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport, Conn. where she was an occupational therapist and a member of the pastoral care department. Sister Zoe had many talents. The way she used her art and sewing talents brought great joy to others. St. Louise House welcomed her in 1999. Sister's surviving relatives include her sister, Josephine Riley of Timonium, Md.; devoted nieces, Angela McCann and Kathy Black, both of Berlin, Md., Joan O'Neal and Patty Cochran of Del. A graduate of Watervliet High School, he also graduated from Siena College, Loudonville where he received his bachelor of arts degree. He resided in Latham from 1954 until moving to Eddy Heritage House, Troy last year. He was employed at the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance for 40 years. An avid reader and baseball fan, he was a communicant of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Latham. Philip was the dear friend and uncle of over 30 years to Sandra and Mike Preble and their children, Christopher and Christine. He was also survived by his cousin, Carol Conerty of Mechanicville. Vurraro, longtime businessman of Syracuse, N.Y. went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, August 26, 2005. Frank had lived in Greenwich, N.Y. with his family prior to his recent stay at Pleasant Valley Infirmary in Argyle, N.Y. Mr. Vurraro was born in Syracuse on October 10, 1915. He was the co-proprieter of the Dale Market, a family business from 1944-1962. Mr. Vurraro then became a sales representative for F&R Confectioners and Ross Empire Brokerage Companies. He was honored for his outstanding work, and was inducted into the Candy Hall of Fame in Hershey, Pennsylvania in 1977. Mr. Vurraro retired from Ross Empire at the age of 80 years. Mr. Vurraro was an avid golfer for the most of his life and was a horse owner at Vernon Downs. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Frank and Flora Vurraro of Lakeland, Fla.; his beloved wife, Jane Maurer; his brothers, Joseph of Liverpool, N.Y., Victor of Zephyr Hills, Fla. and Theodore of Hollywood, Fla. Waldron, Anna Jean ALBANY Anna Jean Waldron died Friday, August 26, 2005 at St. Peter's Hospital after a short illness. She was born in Albany, daughter of the late Eugene Waldron and Anna May Strebler Waldron. Jean graduated from St. Ann's High School and attended Felt & Tarrant Comptometer School. She worked for F. Jacobson & Son, the NYS Department of Unemployment Insurance and Huyck Felt Co., where she was employed for 35 years until her retirement. Jean was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary's Church. She loved life and family. She was also an extensive traveler, avid reader and a talented crafter. Jean was survived by her two loving nieces, Barbara Ann (Eugene) Nowak of Rotterdam and Lorraine (Jim) Clute of Colonie. She was also the cherished great aunt of Lisa (William) Atchinson, Amy (Scot) Kimball, Jennifer (William) Phelps; great great aunt to Samantha and Katelyn Atchinson, Joycelyn Kimball and Eric Phelps. She was predeceased by her sister, Lillian Lorraine Shickle. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude and thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the second floor ICU at St. Peter's Hospital for the compassionate care they gave Jean. Born August 5, 1976 in New York City, she was the daughter of Yan Wing and Woon Tai (Yu) Chi of Valatie. She attended Cardinal Hall in Hudson and Ichabod Crane School in Valatie. She is survived by two sisters, Jennifer and Elaine Chi of Valatie; a brother, Richard Wong of Brooklyn; an aunt, Alice Leung and her husband Mike of N.J.; an uncle, Lin Tai Yee and his wife Yue Ling Lau; three cousins, Christine and Carolyn Leung and Andrew Yee. Grace is also survived by two special friends, Dale Robert Berlin and David Patrick Stevens. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, Rt. 9, Valatie with the Rev. John Molyn officiating. Interment will follow in the church's cemetery.
