Olga was educated in the Troy Public School System, was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and prior to her retirement was employed by New York State Dept. of Taxation and Finance and at the former Jacobsen Shirt Co. She was the loving mother of Mrs. William (Barbara Ann) Riley of Clifton Park, Robert A. (Diana) Acosta of East Greenbush, Mrs. Barry (Julianne) De Rubertis of Center Brunswick; the loving grammy of Courtney Mariani, Jennifer Meeker, Andrea Acosta, Ashley Acosta, Alexander Acosta, Joseph De Rubertis; Stephen De Rubertis; two great-grandchildren, Lauren Wemett and Michael Mariani. Mary was employed as a clerk for the New York State Department of Education in Albany for 25 years and retired 20 years ago. Born and educated in Willsboro, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Jay and Leita Shephard Mero. Mrs. Carey was a graduate of the nursing program at Child's Hospital in 1953. She spent numerous years in private duty nursing and also worked at all of the Albany hospitals throughout her career beginning at Brady Hospital. She also worked at the Villa Mary Immaculate Nursing Home and taught nursing at the Glenmont Job Corp. Mrs. Carey enjoyed nursing and was good at her job. She believed taking care of her family was her most important job and she adored her sons and grandchildren. Wife of the late Arthur E. Carey; mother of Richard M. (Cheryl) Carey of Colonie, Edward A. (Linda) Carey of East Greenbush, Jeffrey A. (Christine) Carey of Schenectady and the late Jay T. Mrs. Creagh was a devoted mother and wife of the late Rev. Elmer Creagh Sr. She was 98 years old and a resident of Albany. Family and friends who knew her affectionately called her Mother Creagh or Big Mama. Born in Selma, Ala., October 25, 1906 to Harrison and Sarah McCall. She was the youngest of seven siblings, one brother and five sisters. She was a devoted and loyal member of Wilborn Temple First C.O.G.I.C. Church family. She was distinguished as being the oldest mother of the church. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by four sons. Kerker, Harry A. COLONIE Harry A. Kerker, 81, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2005 at St. Peter's Hospital after a brief illness. Born at Albany Memorial Hospital, Harry grew up in Castleton and Rensselaer. He was the son of the late John Jay and Henrietta Mae (Bladoe) Kerker. Harry married Mary A. Amitrano of Middletown and moved to Colonie where he resided until his death. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stationed at Stewart Field at West Point and serving his country in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Harry worked as an equipment operator for Niagara Mohawk for 38 years. He was a member of the Niagara Mohawk 25 Year Club and the Pensioners Club, and also the VFW. Harry was an avid bowler and golfer. Harry is predeceased by his son, Donald J. Kerker, and his brother, John Kerker. Harry leaves behind to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary A. Kerker; his sons, Harry J. Kerker (Janis) of La Canada, Calif., Richard J. Kerker (Barbara) of Charlton and Robert A. Kerker (Valerie) of Glenville. Newland, Alyce M. SLINGERLANDS Alyce M. Newland, 87, died Saturday, August 27, 2005 at her home. Born in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Chester and May (Geist) VanDermore. Mrs. Newland was a Navy WAVE (Yeoman 2nd Class) during World War II, stationed in Washington, D.C. Following the war, she worked for New York State in the Alfred E. Smith Office Building and then became a legal secretary for attorney Fay Walworth for many years. A sweet and gentle lady, Mrs. Newland traveled with her husband during his career, living in South Dakota, Michigan, New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Denver, Chicago and Albany. Helen Rasker of Boca Raton, Fla., formerly of Delmar, N.Y., died on Sunday, August 28, 2005 in Miami, Fla. after a long illness. Appreciated among her friends and family for her discriminating eye for beauty, whether in clothing, home furnishings, paintings or handcrafts, she is best known for her retail savvy. Along with her beloved husband, Herman, in the 1950s she established the women's clothing store Town and Tweed in Delmar, which thrived under her expert guidance for nearly 40 years. Born in Newburgh, N.Y., she was one of five sisters in a prominent local retail family, and she learned the clothing business from the ground up in the family-owned store, Travers. She had an unfailing eye for quality and design, and her store was known as the place to shop for generations of Capital District women. She leaves two daughters, Laurel Zinssar (Michael) of Winter Springs, Fla. and Eileen Schuyler (Joseph) of Delmar, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Lisa Devens of Beacon, N.Y. and Jonathan Schuyler of Towson, Md.; three great-grandchildren, Daniel and David O'Neill and Brianna Devens; and two sisters, Jeanne Zweig of Santa Rosa, Calif. and Miriam Snyder of Newburgh, N.Y. Stark, Alfred SCHENECTADY Alfred Stark of Schenectady died at his residence on Sunday, August 28, 2005, one day before his 102nd birthday. He was born in Schenectady, the son of the late Kalman and Pepi Stark. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Anna Ruth Stark and his son Burton Miller Stark, his grandson David Alan Hatkoff. Also his brothers, Max, Jacob and Aaron Stark and sisters Emma Levine and Faye Finkel. A graduate of Schenectady High School, he attended Union College. He was the founder and owner of the former Stark Oil Company until 1985 at which time he retired. Mr. Stark was an avid gardener and loved color and brightness. He painted his house many colors, a picture of which was published in The Most Beautiful places in Schenectady. Children loved walking through and playing in his yard. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Harold Hatkoff of Schenectady; his grandchildren, Bruce and Terry Hatkoff and Brian and Cheryl Hatkoff, all of Los Angeles, Calif.; his great-grandchildren, David and Daniel Hatkoff of New York City, Rebecca, Esther and Lewis Hatkoff of Los Angeles, Calif.; his brother, Henry Stark of Saratoga; several nieces and nephews. Jacobson & Son, the NYS Department of Unemployment Insurance and Huyck Felt Co., where she was employed for 35 years until her retirement. Jean was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary's Church. She loved life and family. She was also an extensive traveler, avid reader and a talented crafter. Mike Yulman, age 91, a well known philanthropist of Albany and Palm Beach, Fla., died Sunday afternoon, August 28, 2005 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Mr. Yulman was a lifelong Capital District resident. He was a 1936 graduate of Union College where he was a former trustee and now trustee emeritus. He and his wife Helen made a gift to Union College to construct the Morton and Helen Yulman Theater, dedicated in 1995, which includes a performance center, offices, classrooms, and production support center. He was chairman of the board of Sealy Mattress Albany and Sealy Mattress, St. Paul, Minnesota. He was a member of the board of directors and executive committee of Sealy Inc. from 1945 to 1986. He was a member of Congregation Gates of Heaven in Schenectady. He was past president of the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home, as well as past president of I Have a Dream program, Albany. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Colonie Country Club and the Banyan Country Club. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Bashevkin Yulman.
