She was born in Yonkers, N.Y. on September 11, 1926 and was the daughter of the late Carson and Margaret Cochrane. Mrs. Fennessey was a Colonie resident for 45 years. Flo worked for the former Remington in Colonie and more recently, the Patroon Room at SUNY, Albany from where she retired. Mrs. Fennessey especially loved spending time with her cherished grandchildren. Flo is the beloved wife of 55 years to Charles J. (Pal) Fennessey. Guanu, John CHERRY VALLEY John Guanu, 82, of Cherry Valley, passed away on Friday, August 26, 2005 while doing what he loved the most, walking. He was born on June 7, 1923 in Albany, N.Y., the son of Greek Immigrants, Anna Bouras and George Guanu. He graduated from Philip Schuyler High School in Albany and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in December 1941. He served in World War II from 1941-1945 in the Army Air Corps as a tail gunner on various B-24 aircraft including the Squaw and the Sneezie and participated in both the North African and European campaigns, including one of the war's most daring air raids, on Hitler's oil fields in Ploesti, Rumania, for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. John was married to Shirley Mason Dutcher on August 4, 1945 in Cherry Valley. He was a resident of Cherry Valley for over 40 years and served for various terms as the Town and Village Justice, was a member of the Fire Department and Ambulance Squad, the American Legion and the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club. He worked as a designer at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. for 37 years and at various other jobs during his retirement. John had a love of the outdoors, including working in his garden, on his old house and walking his little dog, Maggie, actually carrying her at times during the winter. He also loved spending time with family and friends and enjoyed getting into debates on politics and sports. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Shirley Mason Dutcher Guanu; his son, George Guanu of Oneonta, N.Y.; his daughter, Christine Steinhauser and husband Charles Steinhauser of Westford, Mass.; his son, Seth Guanu of Arlington, Va.; his grandchildren, Chadd, Kevin and Kayla Steinhauser of Westford; his beloved dog, Maggie; sisters, Alexandra Soulis and her husband Peter Soulis and Catherine and husband Christopher Vavura, all of Albany; brother-in-law, Loring Dutcher and his wife Doris of Fort Plain, N.Y.; numerous nieces and nephews as well as many dear friends. Hoffman, William COLONIE William Hoffman, 80, of Colonie, died August 28, 2005 at Guilderland Center Nursing Home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in North Greenbush, N.Y. on September 15, 1924, he was the son of the late George Yates and Olive E. Sliter Hoffman. He has been a resident of Colonie for most of his life. During World War II, Mr. Hoffman proudly served with the United States Army in the 3908th Signal Service Battalion. He was an electrician for 37 years until his retirement in 1987 from Clifford Gray. He was a member of IBEW Local Union #166, currently 236 of Schenectady, N.Y. Mr. Hoffman was an antique car enthusiast. Mr. Hoffman is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Marie Waters Hoffman, whom he married in 1948; also survived by his son, William (Jenny) Hoffman Jr. of Colonie; his daughters, Patricia (Cliff) Dudley of Guilderland, Sandra (John) White of Rotterdam and Sharon (John) Douglas of Saratoga; his brothers, Herbert and Lester C. Hoffman; his sisters, Ellen Merrihew, Olive Hoffman and Anna Kennedy; four grandchildren, Jeremy, Jolie, Brandon and Christopher. Born in Odense, Denmark on December 17, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Hans and Marie Larsen Knudsen. She came to the United States and settled in Troy in March 1929. She was a member of the Lansingburgh Senior Citizens, Prince of Peace Church and the Danish Sisterhood of America in Lansingburgh. Mrs. Mazanti was the devoted mother of Mrs. Sam (Elsie) Adams of Clover, S.C. and Mrs. James (Lillian) Maltais of Troy. Also survived by four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Levine Sussman, Judge Ruth MANHATTAN Judge Ruth Levine Sussman, acting Supreme Court Justice for New York County, died Friday, August 26, 2005 at her home in Manhattan after a long and courageous seven-and-a-half-year battle with breast cancer. Justice Sussman, 46, had served on the bench, first in The Bronx and then in New York County Supreme Court, since 1995. She was a respected jurist, known for her legal intellect, fairness and common sense. In recognition of Justice Sussman's legal talent, Chief Judge Judith Kaye of the New York Court of Appeals, named her the initial jurist to preside over the first Integrated Domestic Violence Court in New York State. Judge Kaye created this court to enable judges to address the inter-related issues of domestic violence, custody and other matrimonial and family issues in one court. Previously, these issues had been handled in separate courts. Judge Kaye identified Judge Sussman as uniquely qualified to be the pioneering jurist to preside over this new court. Prior to service on the bench, Judge Sussman was assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney's office for 10 years. She also was an adjunct professor of law at New York University Law School. She lectured on criminal justice across the United States, in China and in England. She served on the national advisory board of The Century Council, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking. Judge Sussman was a graduate of Smith College and Georgetown University School of Law, where she served on the Criminal Justice Law Review. A native of Schenectady, she was the daughter of the Hon. Howard A. Levine, retired associate justice of the New York State Court of Appeals. She is survived by her husband David and daughters, Jane and Rebecca, all of Manhattan; her parents, Judge Howard and Barbara Levine of Schenectady; two brothers, Neil Levine and his wife Meg of Niskayuna and James Levine and his wife Carolyn of Schenectady; and five nephews and nieces, Emily, Matthew, Noah, Ari and Jesse Levine. She was also past president of the Hudson Mohawk Ladies Auxiliary, a member of Ladies Auxiliary of Miller Hose Co. and a Cub Scout Den mother. A sweet and gentle lady, Mrs. Newland traveled with her husband during his career, living in South Dakota, Michigan, New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Denver, Chicago and Albany. Helen Rasker of Boca Raton, Fla., formerly of Delmar, N.Y., died on Sunday, August 28, 2005 in Miami, Fla. after a long illness. Appreciated among her friends and family for her discriminating eye for beauty, whether in clothing, home furnishings, paintings or handcrafts, she is best known for her retail savvy. Along with her beloved husband, Herman, in the 1950s she established the women's clothing store Town and Tweed in Delmar, which thrived under her expert guidance for nearly 40 years. Born in Newburgh, N.Y., she was one of five sisters in a prominent local retail family, and she learned the clothing business from the ground up in the family-owned store, Travers. She had an unfailing eye for quality and design, and her store was known as the place to shop for generations of Capital District women. She leaves two daughters, Laurel Zinssar (Michael) of Winter Springs, Fla. and Eileen Schuyler (Joseph) of Delmar, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Lisa Devens of Beacon, N.Y. and Jonathan Schuyler of Towson, Md.; three great-grandchildren, Daniel and David O'Neill and Brianna Devens; and two sisters, Jeanne Zweig of Santa Rosa, Calif. and Miriam Snyder of Newburgh, N.Y. She is predeceased by two sisters, Florence Jacobsen and Ruth Kooperman and by her husband. Rossetti, a long time resident of Albany, died suddenly on Saturday, August 27, 2005 at St. Peter's Hospital, embraced by her loving family and friends. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on December 14, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John Batista Lesca and Amelia Lesca and stepdaughter of the late Mildred Lesca. A graduate of New York University, Norma was an elementary school teacher in Washingtonville, N.Y. for more than 30 years. She happily retired in 1991 to move to Albany where she cared for her granddaughters. Norma loved children, especially her two granddaughters who were the light of her life. In addition, she volunteered at St. Peter's Hospital giving tours to school children. Norma is survived by her beloved daughter, Fernande Rossetti of Albany; and her loving son-in-law, Peter Randall; her cherished granddaughters, Samantha and Arianna; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Vincent and Lila Rossetti of Las Vegas, Nev.; and her nephews, Stephen D'Alessandro, Nicholas Squittieri, Lawrence Squittieri, Christian Squittieri, Lawrence Rossetti. She was predeceased by her nephew, Vincent Rossetti and her husband, Ferinand Rossetti. Norma brought tremendous joy to all whose lives she touched, especially her closest and dearest friend, Georgene Gladstone; her special friends, John Montesano and Frank Morgan. And the many friends of her daughter to whom she was a second mother. She will be greatly missed. Schoenknecht, 71, of Mazal Court, Valatie, formerly of Poughkeepsie, passed away Friday, August 26, 2005 at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson after a long illness. Born in Newark, N.J., May 6, 1934, he was the son of the late Curt A. and Margaret (Ennis) Schoenknecht. Mr. Schoenknecht was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a graduate of Emory Riddle School of Aeronautics. He was an airline mechanic and inspector with the IBM Corporate Flight Department for more than 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Sally Tessier Schoenknecht; three children, Curt, Beth and Marc from a previous marriage. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Mark Tessier and his wife Maria of Northborough, Mass. and their child, Amanda and Kathleen Snyder and her husband David of Niskayuna and their children, Michael and Alison. "Mike" ALBANY Morton H. Mike Yulman, age 91, a well known philanthropist of Albany and Palm Beach, Fla., died Sunday afternoon, August 28, 2005 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Mr. Yulman was a lifelong Capital District resident. He was a 1936 graduate of Union College where he was a former trustee and now trustee emeritus. He and his wife Helen made a gift to Union College to construct the Morton and Helen Yulman Theater, dedicated in 1995, which includes a performance center, offices, classrooms, and production support center. He was chairman of the board of Sealy Mattress Albany and Sealy Mattress, St. Paul, Minnesota. He was a member of the board of directors and executive committee of Sealy Inc. from 1945 to 1986. He was a member of Congregation Gates of Heaven in Schenectady. He was past president of the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home, as well as past president of I Have a Dream program, Albany. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Colonie Country Club and the Banyan Country Club. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Bashevkin Yulman.
