Martha was born in Albany and had been a resident of Castleton for over 50 years. The wife of 35 years to Ray Baker, who passed in 1982, she was primarily a homemaker but after his death was employed by Fleet Bank, Albany in many capacities. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was also particularly fond of her cats, Callie and Lily. Mrs. Baker is survived by her two daughters, Deborah Roe of Niskayuna and Susan MacKenzie of Greenville; three grandchildren, Andrew J. Nachbar, Alicia M. Roe and Brandon M. Roe. Known as Bick, he was born in Albany to the late Henry and Rose Bickel Sr. He was a US Army World War II veteran. He had been employed at Peerless-Midway as a salesman. Mr. Bickel was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and former longtime usher at Our Lady of Angels Church. Bick collected model trains and enjoyed reading (especially science books) and old movies. He will be fondly remembered by his family for his willingness to always help people. He was the dear husband of Catherine (Kahlie) Kahl Bickel; beloved father of Henry J. She had resided all her life in Troy and was a graduate of Troy High School, Class of 1945. Mrs. Bitley was a telephone operator many years ago and a homemaker for many years. Driggers, 76, of N.C. and previously of Mechanicville, died Sunday evening, August 28, 2005 in Charlotte, N.C. after a brief illness. Mrs. Driggers was born November 23, 1928, daughter of the late Joseph and Edith Guida Wilk. Nellie worked for several different companies in her life as a sewing machine operator until her children were born, after which she took care of them as a stay-at-home mom. Nellie enjoyed crocheting, knitting and reading. She was a member of the Assumption-St. Paul Church, Mechanicville. Survivors include her two children, Marianne Driggers of N.C. and Clyde Driggers of Mechanicville. Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Theodore and Mary Bagan Dzik. A graduate of Scranton Technical High School and the State University of New York, he held a master's degree in education. He had been employed as an administrator for New York Bell, was a teacher in Hudson, N.Y. and retired as principal for the Hudson Elementary School. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served as a staff sergeant with the 38th Infantry Unit in the Pacific theater. Surviving are a brother, Joseph Dzik, Scranton; two sisters, Mary Gravelle, S.D. and Julie Spinelli, Mountainside, N.J.; nieces, nephews and great and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Born on October 17, 1957 in New York City, he moved to the Capital District with his family, residing in Berne, N.Y. He was a graduate of Berne-Knox High School, Class of 1975. Mr. Fay was a design engineer for Atlas Copco and later for Turbotechnologies in Scotia for the past 10 years. He was an accomplished artist and wood craftsman. Bob created fine art and had an affinity for animals, especially dogs. He was often seen walking his Newfoundland on Maple Avenue in Scotia. An avid reader, he especially enjoyed science fiction books and magazines and horror novels. His belief was in the extraterrestrial. Survivors include his father, Robert C. Hoffman, William COLONIE William Hoffman, 80, of Colonie, died August 28, 2005 at Guilderland Center Nursing Home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in North Greenbush, N.Y. on September 15, 1924, he was the son of the late George Yates and Olive E. Sliter Hoffman. He has been a resident of Colonie for most of his life. During World War II, Mr. Hoffman proudly served with the United States Army in the 3908th Signal Service Battalion. He was an electrician for 37 years until his retirement in 1987 from Clifford Gray. He was a member of IBEW Local Union #166, currently 236 of Schenectady, N.Y. Mr. Hoffman was an antique car enthusiast. Mr. Hoffman is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Marie Waters Hoffman, whom he married in 1948; also survived by his son, William (Jenny) Hoffman Jr. of Colonie; his daughters, Patricia (Cliff) Dudley of Guilderland, Sandra (John) White of Rotterdam and Sharon (John) Douglas of Saratoga; his brothers, Herbert and Lester C. Hoffman; his sisters, Ellen Merrihew, Olive Hoffman and Anna Kennedy; four grandchildren, Jeremy, Julia, Brandon and Christopher. GUILDERLAND Joseph E. Howard, 68, of Guilderland, passed away suddenly on Tuesday morning, August 30, 2005 at his residence. He was born in Hempstead, N.Y. and was the son of the late George and Jane Stodalski Howard. Joe was a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1957 to 1961. He has been a resident of Guilderland for 38 years. He was a machine operator with NL Industries in Colonie and Campbell Plastics in Schenectady. An avid baseball fan, Joe coached his son's youth baseball teams for several years. He enjoyed walking and gardening. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Lorraine Howard; his children, Dane Howard (Carol), Darren Howard (Michelle) and Christine Howard; his cherished grandchildren, Ryan, Kaylee and Nicholas Howard. He is the brother of Walter Howard, Russell Howard, Jane Beautikant and the late Marion Borislowski. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Born on June 12, 1920 and educated in Mechanicville, he was the son of the late Peter and Anna Chuba Kokinda and husband of the late Helen Barbara Kokinda, who died in 1986. Stephen was the owner of Thundering Herd riding stable in Malta. He also worked on the Boston and Maine railroad in Mechanicville, where he was a brakeman. Stephen was a veteran of the United States Army and a former Golden Gloves boxer in the Albany area. Kraus, 86, of Dover, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2005 at Union Hospital in Dover. Born on April 27, 1919, he was the son of William and Eva Stuber Kraus. He was a graduate of Dover High School and received a bachelor of arts degree from Ohio Wesleyan University. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. An educator, Bill began his career as a high school teacher in Tupper Lake, N.Y. Throughout his life, he shared fond memories of his friendships and experiences in this picturesque Adirondack community. Bill had a special interest in teaching dramatic arts and directed many high school and community theater productions. He completed his career as a member of the faculty of the department of education at the State University of New York at Albany. Bill is survived by a niece, Christine Flood of Toronto, Ontario; two great-nieces, Nora Flood of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Monica Krantz of Columbus and a great-nephew, Simon Flood of Kingston, Ontario. Lawyer, 91, of Rosa Road, Schenectady, died Friday, August 26, 2005 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a brief illness. Born in Watervliet, he was the son of the late William Barber Lawyer and Maria Louisa (Perry) Lawyer and husband of Sara A. Turnage Lawyer. He earned his bachelor of science from Siena College, Class of 1954, graduating with honors and his master's degree in physics from Union College in 1962. Mr. Lawyer was the first black engineer in the nuclear fusion division of the General Electric Company in Schenectady. He joined the transmitter department in 1941. In 1946, he transferred to the general engineering laboratory as a laboratory assistant, was named a development engineer in 1954 and retired after 40 years as a physicist in the nucleonics and radiation branch. John met Sara Turnage in Poughkeepsie, where she was a member of a choir and he played saxophone in a band. Their friendship grew and, in June 1940, John and Sara were married. They had eight children. John is survived by his wife Sara; his sons, Roger, Gary and Kevin; his daughters, Barbara Boone and Linda Stephens; his sisters, Lottie Brown and Mary Ward; a host of grandchildren; nieces, nephews; and loving friends. Levine Sussman, Judge Ruth MANHATTAN Judge Ruth Levine Sussman, acting Supreme Court Justice for New York County, died Friday, August 26, 2005 at her home in Manhattan after a long and courageous seven-and-a-half-year battle with breast cancer. Justice Sussman, 46, had served on the bench, first in The Bronx and then in New York County Supreme Court, since 1995. She was a respected jurist, known for her legal intellect, fairness and common sense. In recognition of Justice Sussman's legal talent, Chief Judge Judith Kaye of the New York Court of Appeals, named her the initial jurist to preside over the first Integrated Domestic Violence Court in New York State. Judge Kaye created this court to enable judges to address the inter-related issues of domestic violence, custody and other matrimonial and family issues in one court. Previously, these issues had been handled in separate courts. Judge Kaye identified Judge Sussman as uniquely qualified to be the pioneering jurist to preside over this new court. Prior to service on the bench, Judge Sussman was assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney's office for 10 years. She also was an adjunct professor of law at New York University Law School. She lectured on criminal justice across the United States, in China and in England. She served on the national advisory board of The Century Council, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking. Judge Sussman was a graduate of Smith College and Georgetown University School of Law, where she served on the Criminal Justice Law Review. A native of Schenectady, she was the daughter of the Hon. Howard A. Levine, retired associate justice of the New York State Court of Appeals. She had lived in Waterford and Deltona, Fla. for the past 16 years and worked for the New York Telephone Co. in Schenectady for 15 years. Massara, formerly of Hamilton St., Albany, died Monday, August 29, 2005 at the Teresian House in Albany. Miss Massara was born in Albany and lived here all her life. She lived in her family home on Hamilton St. in the Central Square neighborhood for 77 years. She was a graduate of Siena College and did graduate studies at the College of St. Rose. She was employed for a time by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance and, for many years, was a school teacher at the Goodrich School in North Colonie. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in Albany and a member of the Holy Cross Ladies Guild. She was also a member of the Siena Alumni Association and the Louise Corning Seniors, where she was a faithful pupil of the ceramic classes. She also loved to garden and was an avid skier and hiker. Miss Massara was the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Mary F. D'Arrigo Massara. She is survived by her sister, Harriet M. Massara of Albany; her brother, Arthur J. Massara of Arlington, Mass.; and by six nieces and one nephew. She was predeceased by her sister, Sr. Rose Esther Massara, RSM; her brothers, Frank A. Massara and Vincent A. Massara; and by her beloved cat, Chico. Robert was born in Guilderland, the son of the late Russell and Nellie Miller. He worked for the New York Telephone Co. for 40 years and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Frances C. Miller. A Vietnam veteran serving in the Army infantry, Joe was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for meritorious service. After his military service, Joe attended and graduated from SUNY Albany. Joe then began over 30 years of dedicated employment in the insurance industry. At the time of his death, he was a senior underwriter for Farm Family Insurance, Glenmont, N.Y. (Daly) COHOES After a 20-year courageous battle with cancer, Jacquelyn A. (Daly) Richards entered eternal life on August 29, 2005 at St. Peter's Community Hospice Inn. She was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., October 21, 1946 and moved to Rotterdam in 1955. She attended Mohonasen High School, served as a member of the color guard and graduated in 1964. She then served as a customer service representative for the Daly Insurance Agency, Herb Poller Agency and Scataub Agency. She managed the Park V Restaurant and nightclub and served as property manager for several area apartment communities, most recently at Riverwalk on the Hudson. She was predeceased by her father, John C. Daly, in 1990 and her mother, Anita E. Daly, in 1999. After her dad passed on from Lou Gehrig's disease, she became a tireless and enthusiastic fundraiser for St. Peter's Hospital ALS Regional Center. As volunteer coordinator of the ALS Memorial Open, she helped raise over the last 15 years, more than $400,000 for the center. Due to her personal battle with cancer, she most recently spent a great deal of time volunteering at Gilda's Club in Albany. She will forever be remembered by those whose lives she touched, for her boundless energy, positive spirit and giving nature. She made every attempt to fulfill many of her lifelong dreams including hot air balloon rides, kayaking rapids, cross country skiing, attending the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and traveling both near and far. She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie (Scott) Rumphrey of Linden, N.J.; one sister, Cynthia Cseh of Schenectady; two brothers, Patrick M. (Christine) Daly of Burnt Hills and William Scott (Cynthia) Daly of Rotterdam; nephews, Seaman Sean P. Daly, serving on the USS Nimitz in Iraq, Matthew J. Born March 28, 1920 in Troy, he resided in Cohoes where he worked for 40 years managing the family business, retiring in 1983 and relocating to Venice. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps and a member of the Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. West Jr., 63 years, of Medusa, N.Y., passed away suddenly on August 29, 2005 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, N.Y. He was born in Albany, N.Y. on January 20, 1942, son of the late James W. Sr. and Margaret (Buddenhagan) West. James was in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany. He was employed as a laborer with Old Castle Pre-Stressed Concrete until his retirement in January of 2005. He was a member of the Clark White American Legion Post #589. James enjoyed bowling and golfing. He also loved gardening and was particularly proud of the gladiolus he raised in his garden. Surviving are his wife, Sandra L.
