NISKAYUNA Harold Howard Hirsch, 86, of VanAntwerp Village, died Friday, October 7, 2005 at home. Harold was born at the age of nine months on December 5, 1918 in the little village of Windsor, Vt. His one brother and three sisters were all older than he was, creating the advantage of his being a kid brother. When Harold was seven, his father died of pneumonia, the result of the use of ether as an anesthesia during surgery. Harold's mother sold the family business when he was 13 and moved the whole clan to Brooklyn, N.Y., to be nearer to her large family of four sisters and three brothers. Harold attended James Madison High School (which had a good football team then) and continued his education at City College of New York, where he received his bachelor of chemical engineering degree. Seeing more opportunities in the specialized field of powder metallurgy, he completed his master's in metallurgy at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., while working as an assistant foreman with Crucible Steel, producing thousand-pound bombs for the Navy. He continued his contact with Stevens, working as a research fellow in the laboratory, until he learned that the services of a powder metallurgist were needed at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (the name and location were not immediately revealed to him). He expressed interest in the position but heard nothing until the day he was to be inducted into the army. He was at the desk, literally ready to sign his name, when the officer in charge received notification that Harold should go home and await instructions. Two months later, he reported to Los Alamos. He was assigned a room in a Quonset hut with chemists, physicists and metallurgists, some of whom would become world-renowned in their fields. The very next day, his superior explained why the facility was attempting to design and manufacture an atomic bomb. Harold could not believe that a bomb could have such force but understood it when the concept of atomic physics was gradually explained to him. He remained at Los Alamos for two years, witnessing the first test of the bomb in New Mexico. He naively believed that the power of the bomb would lead to the cessation of all future wars. After the war, the University of Chicago inaugurated three new institutes to study the nature of matter. Harold joined the institute for the study of metals, where he spent two years before transferring to the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady, N.Y. Seven years later, he began work at the then-entitled General Electric Research Laboratory, also in Schenectady. After 35 years of working on a myriad of challenging projects, Harold retired in 1983. Harold sustained a number of serious health problems throughout his life, the first a major cardiac infarction (heart attack) in 1963. In more recent years, with the aid of an outstanding cardiologist, Dr. Paul Dworkin, and associates (prior to that, Dr. Arnold Ritterband), Harold realized that he had defeated the odds that he would succumb at a much earlier age. Although he had had a number of operations over the years, he felt that he had led a good, interesting and productive life. His sense of humor was legend, as evidenced only too clearly in certain phrases in this tribute which are obviously his. His humility and kindness, his generosity, deep sense of caring and his passion for golf must also be mentioned by those of us who loved him. In 1969, he married the perfect wife, Shirley Madden. She tragically succumbed to a brain tumor in 1997. Her family is, faithfully, still part of his family. He was particularly devoted to his quadriplegic nephew, Michael, to whom he and Shirley gave much time, energy and love for many years. He also felt a very strong bond and special closeness to his brother's son, Jerrold Hirsch, who was almost like a son to him. In recent years, he felt he had been most fortunate in having the close companionship of a lovely lady, June Schechter, who was totally committed to making his life enjoyable and rewarding. In addition to a multitude of her warm, supportive family and friends, Harold felt that he was also personally blessed with a myriad of sincere friends that he had made on his journey through life, two of whom stand out above all others in their support and caring: Mike Cocca and Howard Fiedler. Everyone should be fortunate enough to have such faithful and devoted people in their lives, Harold has said. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service which will be conducted by Rabbi Matthew Cutler Monday at 12 noon at the Gleason Funeral Home, 730 Union Street, Schenectady. There will be no calling hours. Harold will be buried next to his wife. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Haven Grief Counseling Center, 703 Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12305. Published in the Albany Times Union on 10/9/2005. Humphrey, Anna H. At an early age, the family moved to St. Louis, Mo., where they were surrounded by many relatives. The children enjoyed the company of one another and spent their days playing tennis, boating on the river, singing in the church choir and acting in plays. Florence met Fred K. Mac McCormick and, after a long courtship, they married in June of 1941. Together, they moved to New York in 1946, living first in Bronxville and then Eastchester, N.Y. Florence is survived by her daughters, Barbara McCormick, Susan Philippo and Joann McCormick, and grandsons, Christopher Philippo and Timothy Philippo and Tim's wife Monica. Florence's family would like to acknowledge the love, support and care given to her by her many friends, neighbors and her church community.
