Levine Sussman, Judge Ruth MANHATTAN Judge Ruth Levine Sussman, acting Supreme Court Justice for New York County, died Friday, August 26, 2005 at her home in Manhattan after a long and courageous seven-and-a-half-year battle with breast cancer. Justice Sussman, 46, had served on the bench, first in The Bronx and then in New York County Supreme Court, since 1995. She was a respected jurist, known for her legal intellect, fairness and common sense. In recognition of Justice Sussman's legal talent, Chief Judge Judith Kaye of the New York Court of Appeals, named her the initial jurist to preside over the first Integrated Domestic Violence Court in New York State. Judge Kaye created this court to enable judges to address the inter-related issues of domestic violence, custody and other matrimonial and family issues in one court. Previously, these issues had been handled in separate courts. Judge Kaye identified Judge Sussman as uniquely qualified to be the pioneering jurist to preside over this new court. Prior to service on the bench, Judge Sussman was assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney's office for 10 years. She also was an adjunct professor of law at New York University Law School. She lectured on criminal justice across the United States, in China and in England. She served on the national advisory board of The Century Council, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking. Judge Sussman was a graduate of Smith College and Georgetown University School of Law, where she served on the Criminal Justice Law Review. A native of Schenectady, she was the daughter of the Hon. Howard A. Levine, retired associate justice of the New York State Court of Appeals.
