Born on November 18, 1938 in Clarksville, NY, she was the daughter of the late Willard and Clarabel Morey Appleby. She worked for 19 years for the Albany County Department of Social Services as their switchboard operator. She was a former member of the Onesquethaw Volunteer Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include her children, Alma Cole (Bob) of Albany, Barbara Leonard of Tallahassee, Fla., James B. Whitten Jr. (Donna) of Homossa, Fla., Robert C. Price (Penny) of Albany, Joseph Appleby (Lynn) of Ravena; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many niece and nephews. Cole, 63, of Vischer Ferry Road, Clifton Park, died at his residence Friday, September 2, 2005, after a long illness. He was born in Troy and educated in Cohoes schools. He was the son of the late William M. and Margaret Hansen Cole. He was owner and operator of the Hess Station on Maxon Road and Nott Street, Schenectady since 1973 and former owner operator of Sunoco A Plus on Broadway, Saratoga Springs. He was a member of the Gasoline Retailer Association of New York and the Northern New York Paddler Club in Schenectady. He was a Marine veteran and belonged to the American Legion Post 1450, Clifton Park. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Ostiguy Cole of Clifton Park; father of Christina Cole of Clifton Park and William M. Cole of Bakersfield, Calif.; grandfather of Raleigh R. Powell II and Casey D. DiSanto, 73, of Albany, passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2005. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Felice and Vincenza (Ravida) DiSanto. Mr. DiSanto was an Albany resident for all of his life. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War. Joe had 49 years of service with Sterling Drugs/Winthrop Laboratories before his retirement. He was an active member of the Italian American Community Center where he was a past president and past vice president. Mr. DiSanto was a proud member of the Saratoga National Cemetery Honor Guard Association, Wednesday Squad. He enjoyed photography, camping and traveling. Joseph is the beloved husband of 42 years to Anna M. (Rao) DiSanto. He is the devoted father of Joanne Ferri and her husband Scott of Stillwater, Joseph DiSanto Jr. and his wife Gina of Rotterdam, Michele Celello and her husband Paul of East Greenbush and Lisa Cooper and her husband Jeff of Albany. Marvin Ginsburg passed away on Friday, September 2, 2005. His beloved wife of 60 years, Judith, and his four children, Howard Ginsburg, Riva Rittberg, Fran Ginsburg Wolf and Sheri and Zohar Mantzoor were at his side. Marvin leaves 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who loved him and who were loved by him, as well as his sister, Lea Baruch, and three nephews. Marvin was a cattle dealer and farmer for 50 years. A Holocaust survivor, he distinguished himself in the struggle against the Nazis. He was a valiant and highly decorated war hero who saved numerous lives. Marvin was credited with dynamiting and derailing 17 German trains, a number of key bridges and an electric generation plant. Born into a large family in the Belorussian town of Iwje, Marvin came to the US in 1949 and has always cherished this country. McCloskey, William F. MELROSE William F. McCloskey, 86, of Pinewoods Road, died Monday, August 29, 2005 at St. Mary's, Troy after a long illness. Born in Troy, April 6, 1919, son of the late Konstantz and Anna McCloskey. Mr. McCloskey was a dairy farmer in Melrose and also was a foreman for the Town of Schaghticoke Highway Department for a number of years. During World War II, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and served in the North African and Italian campaigns. Bill was a member of the American Legion of Schaghticoke. His wife, Helen Bunk McCloskey, died April 20, 1979. Survivors include his son, Gary and wife Suzanne McCloskey of Ind.; daughter, Gail and husband Earl Middleton of Staten Island; along with five grandchildren and a great-grandson. In the furtherance of medical science, Bill donated his body to the Albany Medical Center's Anatomical Gift Program. Middlebrooks, Alice COHOES Alice Ann Foley Middlebrooks, 88, died peacefully August 31, 2005 in her beloved hometown of Cohoes. Born April 21, 1917 on Van Schaick Island, Alice was the eldest child of the late Alice Granger and Daniel B. Foley. She graduated from Sacred Heart School and Keveny Memorial Academy in Cohoes and Albany Business College. Alice enjoyed a rewarding career with New York State, serving as principal secretary in the departments of parks and environmental conservation. She lived a full life with a sense of humor and included gardening, travel, cooking, caregiving and pets, friends and family among her favorite things. Alice is survived by three nieces, Ann Foley Ellery, Elaine Ellery Nugent (John) and Nancy Ellery Kosakoski (James); her grandnieces and grandnephews, Kristin, Meghan, Johnny and Billy Nugent; her stepchildren, Joan Middlebrooks Waldrop and John R. Oser, Florence COLONIE Florence Oser, age 87, of Winners Circle in Colonie, died Thursday, September 1, 2005 at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady. Mrs. Oser was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She received her B.A. from City College of New York in the first women's graduating class. She later received her master's degree in elementary education from the College of St. Rose in Albany. Mrs. Oser was active in the social reform movement in her youth. She was a teacher in the Albany City School system for 20 years. She also taught nursery education at Hudson Valley Community College. She was a former member of Temple Israel in Albany and a former member of the Pioneer Women. She was married to Herman Abelson until his passing in 1971. She is survived by her loving husband of 32 years, Nathan Oser. After her marriage to Nathan, she relocated to the family farm in N.J. and then they built their dream house in Upstate New York, where she became the town librarian. Most importantly, Florence developed many close and lasting friendships throughout her life. Survivors in addition to her husband Nathan include two beloved daughters, Ellen and her husband Dr. Lawrence Eisenberg of Niskayuna, N.Y. and Rena and her husband Semyon Brover of N.J.; sister of Sylvia Aaron of Queens, N.Y.; cherished grandmother of Seth (Abby) Eisenberg, Amy Eisenberg and her husband Larry Zakarin, Eric Eisenberg and Jenny Brover; great-grandmother of Brandon Eisenberg and Hank Zakarin. Born in Varia, Italy, he was the son of the late Walter and Theresa Busi Pellegrini. He was a US Army veteran, having served during World War II. Mr. Pellegrini was a waiter at the Hotel Pierre Restaurant in Manhattan for over 35 years, retiring in 1974. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Emma Africani Pellegrini; devoted son, Walter Pellegrini; cherished grandchildren, Matthew and Katherine Pellegrini, all of Troy. Spreading love everywhere, she taught all those in her life to do the same. She was born on November 21, 1929, in South Bethlehem, N.Y., to Ralph C. and Blanche (Seaburg) Rarick. Doris and her husband, James C. Rickard Jr. lived on Fares Road Ravena, N.Y. where they raised their six children in a home that was always open to friends and family; a home where anyone was welcome to stop by for a meal, join in a song, play cards or just talk and relax. Doris was always a hard worker, doing all she could to care for her family and friends. For many years, she was known as the Stanley Home Products Lady. Prior to her career as a rural mail carrier in Coeymans Hollow, she worked for RCS, transporting children with special needs. During her life, Doris also enjoyed gardening, traveling, hunting, and weekly visits to the Greene County Long-Term Care Nursing Home. Doris was a member of the Coeymans Hollow Methodist Church, The Ravena Grange, The Ravena Bowling League, local area senior citizens groups and a charter member of the Coeymans Hollow Ladies Auxillary. She was also a member of the NY Rural Letter Carrier's Association, for which she was a union representative for several years. Doris is survived by her six children, Audrey Faith Van Kempen, Arlene Hope Rickard (John Zboray), Adele Charity (Phillips) Thayer (John Newell), James C. Rickard III (Victoria), Ava Lee Weisenburn (James Burgess), Alma Marie Parks (Wayne); brother, John Rarick (Joan); sister, Rosemary Court (Dale); and sister-in-law, Jessie Rarick. Nana was blessed with 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. As the family matriarch, she taught the importance of family to many generations. She was known as Nana to many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and other children. Doris was predeceased by her husband, James C. Rickard Jr., companion, Walter Parks and her brother, Arnold Rarick. SCOTIA Charlotte A. Smith, 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 31, 2005, surrounded by her loving family at Ellis Center for Long Term Care. Born in Leesville, La., she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Ola Jeane. Charlotte was active in all outdoor activities and especially enjoyed golfing, camping, fishing and canoeing. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Charlotte had worked for the Carl Company, Woolworths, and volunteered her time at Faith United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Jolly Swingers Golf League, a senior bowling league and a family bowling league. She is predeceased by her son, Michael Smith. Charlotte is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Albert R. Michael graduated from St. Mary's Academy, Class of 1960. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Michael retired from Della Auto Group in Queensbury after many years of dedicated service. He enjoyed working on his home, having pride in that he built it himself. Besides his parents, his five brothers predeceased him, Anthony, John, Salvatore, Nicholas Jr. and Carmelo Sommo, and his great-nephew, Geoffrey Logan Sommo. He is survived by his three sisters, Josephine Sommo of Glens Falls, Antoinette Bombard of Glens Falls and Louise Sommo of Clifton Park, along with several nieces and nephews.
