Bernadette "Mother Bernadette" ALBANY Sister M. Bernadette de Lourdes, O. Carm. (Mother Bernadette) died Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at Teresian House in Albany, N.Y. Born in Dublin, Ireland on July 3, 1907 to Edward and Kathleen (Short) Wisely, Kathleen Frances Bridget came to the United States in 1926. Here, she completed the education begun in Ireland, attending three universities and specializing in administration, healthcare and social work. During her lifetime, honorary degrees of doctor of laws from Sacred Heart University and the University of Bridgeport were among the honors bestowed upon her. Mother Bernadette entered the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm in 1932 when the community was in its infancy. She made her final vows four years later. From 1934 to 1946, she was entrusted with the formation of the Novices. She instilled in the Sisters a great love of the congregation and dedication to its mission and philosophy that was imparted by the Foundress, Mother M. Angeline Teresa, with whom Mother Bernadette worked very closely. Her keen insights into the needs of older people, her enthusiasm, graciousness and boundless energy truly made her a champion for those in the autumn of life. She pioneered the concept of resident-centered care, in which all services and programs are based on the needs of the individual, thereby enhancing each older person's sense of dignity, worth, respect and independence. From 1946 to 1972, Mother Bernadette assumed the duties of vicar general of the congregation, and her responsibilities during those years overlapped with those of being superior/administrator of four different homes of the ages: Mount Carmel Home, New York City (1948-1951), St. Patrick's Home, Bronx, N.Y. (1951-1952), Mary Manning Walsh Home, New York City (1952-1960) and St. Joseph's Manor, Trumbull, Conn. (1960-1978). From 1980-1999, Mother Bernadette served as director of planning and development for the congregation and was instrumental in establishing the community's archives. Throughout her years, she remained very active in numerous professional organizations and served on many boards of directors in various states where the Carmelite Sisters were represented, including the board of directors at Teresian House, Albany, N.Y. A leader in the field of geriatrics, Mother Bernadette found herself in great demand as a participant in state and national affairs as these pertained to the elderly. She was commissioner of aging for the State of Connecticut from 1960 to 1975 and also served on the state's advisory committee on aging. She was one of the founders of the American Association of Homes for the Aging (later the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging) that, in 1963, presented her with the first Award of Honor for outstanding contributions to the field of nonprofit homes for the aging. In 1965, she was a guest at the Rose Garden of the White House when President Lyndon Johnson signed a notable piece of national legislation, the landmark Older American Act. The president presented her with the pen he used to sign the bill into law. She attended International Congress of Gerontology in Kiev, Jerusalem and elsewhere. Mother Bernadette was also on Cardinal Cooke's Task Force on Aging (1977), on the American Psychiatric Association Task Force to study the status of nursing homes and several other major committees. She was the first woman elected to serve as president of the National Council on the Aging and a member of the National Advisory Committee for the White House Council on Aging, where she helped to set trends for eldercare that are still in force, making life better for older Americans. Mother Bernadette published many articles in professional journals. Her first full-length book, Where Somebody Cares, was published in 1959. She is also the author of Woman of Faith, published in 1984. A member of the Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm for 73 of the congregation's 76-year history, she witnessed its growth from early on and has been an inspiration to many, both among her fellow religious and among those many friends and associates who have also shared in the vision and mission of Mother M. Angeline Teresa. Three sisters, Margaret Callan, Evelyn Malanga and Angels Clifford, predeceased Mother Bernadette. Several nieces and nephews survive her. Sister Bernadette's Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Carmelite Sisters, St. Teresa's Motherhouse, Germantown by the Most Reverend Howard J. Hubbard, DD, Bishop of Albany. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Friday 1:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Motherhouse in Germantown.
