He was born in New York City on September 4, 1923 and raised in Palmerton, Pa., the son of the Episcopal minister in town, George McKinley and his wife Bessie Hokensen McKinley. At age 10, he and his brother, Tom, founded the Star Press, a newspaper renowned for its tidbits of juicy gossip. The brothers, published this until college intervened. Bob graduated from Lehigh University, broken up by a two-year stint in the Army in England, where he participated in the chemical warfare division. He received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College. After interning at the Jefferson Hospital and beginning general practice in Palmerton, he decided to specialize in psychiatry. He perfected his inimitable style during 14 years on staff at the New York Hospital, Westchester Division. In the late 60s, he joined the New York State Mental Health System and served as the founding director of the Elmira Psychiatric Center. In the early 70s, he joined the Department of Mental Hygiene in Albany, where he served as a deputy commissioner. He finished a fulfilling career directing the Saratoga Hospital Mental Health Unit. He married Joan Schelling of Weston, Conn. on August 9, 1952 and started his family while in Palmerton. He and Joan raised four children while maintaining their active social and civic life. Bob had many passions, including golf. He wanted to be known as the Father of Crolf, a game that he invented that merges golf and croquet. For the past 18 years, he had hosted a Crolf tournament on the course he fashioned on his property in Benson, Vt. An insatiably curious person, Bob took up scuba diving in his mid 70's, mastered the violin and danced a mean jig. He was an avid reader and philosopher, a poet, a loyal friend and a true renaissance man. Bob was deeply committed to his family, especially his wife Joan Schelling McKinley who died in 1996. His four children, Schelling, Hokey, Liza and Heidi, survive him, as well as their spouses and eight grandchildren, all of whom loved Grampa Bob dearly.
