Bagwell, Donald H. PAYSON, Ariz. Donald H. Bagwell, of Payson, died September 13, 2005 of congestive heart failure. He was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y. on November 25, 1923, the son of John Murray Bagwell and Anna Shenk Bagwell. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School and served in the USAF from 1942-1945 in the Southwestern Pacific as a communications supply technician. He was wounded in action during the Philippine liberation. In 1947, he married Jean Stephen Bagwell (deceased) and is survived by their daughter, Elizabeth B. Green of Scottsdale, Ariz. and son, Donald M. Bagwell of Warrensburg, N.Y. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1975. His professional career began with Household Finance Corporation, which he left after 16 years. He then purchased a collection agency, National Adjustment, in the Albany, N.Y. area, which he ran until moving to the Phoenix area in 1976. During his career in the collections industry, he served as president of the New York unit of the ACA (American Collectors Association) and went on to serve as president of the National ACA. He was very proud of his efforts to lobby in Washington for the Fair Debt Collection Act. While living in Niskayuna, N.Y., he also served as president of the Kiwanis Club. In 1975, he married Lydia S. Bagwell. They divorced in 1990. In Phoenix, he started Southwestern Vactor and then Flocon, Inc., specializing in industrial tank and pipeline cleaning and coating and, in later years, he was a manufacturer's rep selling industrial wastewater treatment and aqueous parts cleaning equipment. In 1994, he retired after selling Flocon to his daughter, Elizabeth and son-in-law Bert Green. He owned a camp in Colcord, Ariz. for many years and, in 2002, he moved to Payson. Don was a member of the Tonto Rim Sports Club and served as treasurer. He is also survived by his brother, Richard C. Bagwell of Phoenix; a sister, Marge of Maine; and his four beloved pets, Chester, Cruiser, Moonbeam and Sunbeam. The family thanks his caregivers, RTA Hospice and friends for their devotion, hard work and guidance as we cared for our father. A memorial service will be held at a future date. Bates Sr., 66, of Schenectady died at home, surrounded by his family, Monday, September 19, 2005, after a brief illness. Born in Albany on March 14, 1939, he was the son of Luella C. Bates of Colonie and the late Charles D. Bates. A lifelong area resident, Mr. Bates attended the Albany school system. Calvin was an avid bowler throughout the Tri-City area. He was past president and life member of the Albany Bowling Assoc. He received several gold and silver medals for bowling in the NYS Senior Games. He and his partner won a gold medal at the National Games held in Fla. They also set a record for high score in mixed doubles. He also received a gold medal in NYS Masters Games. His most prized possession was a silver medal which was presented to him at the world games, held in Brisbane, Australia. The medal was presented to him by the Australian Prime Minister. Calvin held the title of Esteemed Loyal Knight for the Rotterdam Elks Lodge #2157. He was a member of the Albany Fire Department for 26 years, retiring in 1988. He is survived by his wife Gladys Smith-Bates and was predeceased by his first wife, Thea Ann Bates. He is the father of Deborah E. Bates of Schenectady, Tina (Michael) Wise of Greenville, S.C., Kimberly A. (Floyd) Waver of Schenectady, Calvin (Patricia) C. Bates Jr. of Rotterdam Jct., Charles D. Bates of Norwich, Michael (Susan) J. Bates of Scotia and Wayne W. Bates of Schenectady; stepchildren, Bobbie Jo Jones, James T. Jones and Tosya R. Randolph, all of Schenectady; brother of Luella Mitzie (Peter) Dominic of Colonie and Judith (James) McGuire of Schenectady. He is also survived by five grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. LOUDONVILLE Walter Prentice Bowers II, 59, died September 21, 2005 at his home in Loudonville, N.Y., surrounded by his loving family, after a difficult and spirited battle with head and neck cancer. Born in Bryn Mawr, Pa., Walter resided in the Albany, N.Y. area for close to 30 years. The son of the late Dr. Charles Bowers and his wife Elizabeth Nold, Walter was a member of the Radnor High School class of 1964 and the University of Michigan class of 1968. Walter's search for contentment was fulfilled by his family and wide circle of friends, and his work. A licensed real estate broker and Certified Property Manager, Walter was self-employed for nearly 30 years as a consultant, lecturer and teacher in the areas of property and general management, banking, and organizational development. He was a faculty member of both the Institute of Real Estate Management and the New York State Association of Realtors (NYSAR), and a member of the board of directors of the South Berkshire Chamber of Commerce and a former board member of both the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater and NYSAR. With his joy for life and outrageous sense of humor, Walter enriched the lives of all who knew and cared for him. Walter was a dedicated and caring volunteer, an avid Democrat and optimist, gifted speaker, and a committed hiker and cyclist. He completed numerous bicycle rides to benefit diabetes and cancer research, including the 193 mile, two day Pan-Mass Challenge in 2004. Walter loved and felt a special kindred spirit with turtles, getting his first tattoo of a turtle shortly before his death. Walter enjoyed sailing, ice cream, his hot tub, flashlights, reading, electronics and gadgets, the funnies, knots, jokes and puns, and macrobiotic cooking. Walter's extraordinary grace and humor at the end of his life was strengthening and beautiful. Walter will be forever loved and remembered by his darling wife Deborah Richards; daughter Jessica Bowers; son Walter Forest; stepdaughter Leah Nattell Palmer; stepson Noah Nattell; mother Elizabeth Allen and stepfather Rev. Brady, Winifred COLONIE Winifred (Mildred) Kenneally Brady, 86, formerly of Laing St., died Monday, September 19, 2005 at the Albany County Nursing Home. Born in Albany, Mildred was a lifelong resident of Colonie. She was the wife of the late Francis J. Brady. Mildred is survived by her children, Francis Brady of Denver, N.C., Jean Goodrow of Colonie, Frederick Brady of Colonie, Joan Murray of Niskayuna and Edward Brady of Albany; her sister, Elizabeth King of Delmar; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, Thomas and Edward Kenneally. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary I. (Palladino) Colarusso and is survived by a brother, Dominic A. Colarusso of Troy and many nieces and nephews. Rita was predeceased by her brothers, Albert Colarusso and Frank M. Colarusso, and her sisters, Nancy (Tony) Mancinelli, Margaret (Frank) Milanese, Stella Colarusso, Anna (James) Visk, Louise (John) Magnotta, Rose (Peter) Magnetto. Rita was a 30-year employee of the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, retiring from state service in 1979. Rita was educated in Troy schools at St. Anthony's and Troy High School and resided in Troy for her entire 91 years. Although she did reside in Troy her entire life, she certainly did not stay within the city limits. Rita was an avid traveler, visiting interesting destinations such as London, Rome, Paris and Hawaii. Rita was always on the go, fiercely independent and also traveled throughout the USA from Calif. to Fla. and throughout New England. Closer to home, Rita traveled extensively around the Capital District, riding the CDTA bus or a Black & White or Capital Land Cab to go on shopping adventures at the local malls well into her 90s!!! She was a regular at Manory's, Leahy's and Fatones in downtown Troy where she would meet her many friends. Rita was a devoted and loving sister and aunt. Her commitment to her nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews was spent in the form of many hours baby-sitting all of them at some point during the past 60 years. She was as quick with a laugh as she was with a funny story that made all of us laugh and feel good to be around her. Rita had a deep and unshakable faith in the Lord and the Catholic Church and throughout her life practiced that greatest of all virtues - charity. She was a daily communicant of St. Anthony's Church in downtown Troy. Born in Albany, he was the son of Eugene C. Cross Jr. and his wife Carol of Sloansville and the late Elizabeth McCourt and the devoted husband of Pamela Goodrich Cross of Melrose. Mr. Cross was a graduate of Hoosick Valley High School and was retired from the State of New York Department of Transportation in Albany. He was an independent fee appraiser and a former member of the Town of Schaghticoke Planning Board from 1988 to 1996. Mr. Cross was the assessor for the Town of Schaghticoke from 1998 to 2005 and was a former 1st lieutenant and training officer for the Speigletown Fire Department. He received his bachelor's degree in history and political science from the University at Albany. At the time of his death, he was an adjuster with One Beacon Insurance in Albany. Peter was an avid reader and sports fan, especially the New York Giants. Mildred was a longtime resident of Albany, N.Y. Born in Okolona, Miss. to the late Moses and Lee Anna Fields Johnson. Mildred was the 11th child out of 12 to this union. Mildred worked at Albany Memorial Hospital 28 years as a physical therapist assistant until her retirement. She was better known as Millie to co-workers and Juanita to family and friends. Mildred leaves to cherish her loving memories four daughters, Renetta Bynum (LuLu) Barbara Jean Mullins (Walker), Rachel Rhem (Cookie) and Ann Rhem; two sisters, Barbara Henderson Head and Shirley Ruth Blanchard. Kerker, Robert P. SOUTH BETHLEHEM Robert P. Kerker, 77, of South Bethlehem, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, September 20, 2005. Born in New York City, Robert was the son of the late Philip and Isabel Kerker. He was a graduate of Milne High School and received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Columbia University and did doctoral work at the University at Albany. Bob worked for 35 years in the New York State Division of the Budget and retired as chief budget examiner in 1993. He authored, The Executive Budget in New York: A Half Century Perspective and contributed to other publications including a new book, The Encyclopedia of New York State scheduled to be published this year. Bob was President of the Albany Torch Club for 2005-2006. He was past president of the Empire State Capital Area Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration. He was a Fellow of the State Academy for Public Administration, and was the current chair of the Public Administration Research Award Committee. Bob was fluent in several languages, including Russian, and made several trips to Russia and participated in a roundtable on local government hosted by the Institute of State and Law, Soviet Academy of Science, in 1978. He was an active member of the South Bethlehem United Methodist Church for nearly 50 years. Bob will long be remembered for his love of language, history, politics, train travel, French restaurants, wine and the Boston Red Sox. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Joan Threadgill Kerker: his brother, Sherwood Kerker of St. Louis, Mo.; sons, Robert (Pamela) Kerker of Rhinebeck, Thomas (Mariallane) Kerker of Warren, Ohio and Charles (Kimberly) Kerker of Delmar. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, one great-grandson, and several nieces. Lauzon, 61, a resident of Knickerbocker Road, Schodack Landing, died Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at Albany Memorial Hospital after a long battle with ALS. Born in Bennington, March 9, 1944, he was the son of the late Raymond G. Lauzon and the former Ann (Hogan) Lauzon who survives. He received his education in the Salem, N.Y. schools and was a 1962 graduate of the former Washington Academy. Peter married the former Ellen Normile on August 29, 1975 at St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet, N.Y. In earlier years, Peter owned and operated a family farm in Jackson, N.Y. For the past 20 years, he had served as postmaster at the U.S. Post Office in Schodack Landing. He enjoyed attending high school basketball games and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Ellen Lauzon of Schodack Landing; five children, Maria E. Lauzon of South Burlington, Vt., Jason P. Lauzon of Astoria, N.Y., David R. Lauzon and John P. Lauzon, both of Schodack Landing, and Elizabeth A. Lauzon of Wynantskill, N.Y.; a sister, Joann Aubrey and a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Chris Lauzon, all of Cambridge, N.Y.; three aunts, one uncle and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He retired after 35 years of service from the New York Telephone Company in Albany where he had been a district staff manager. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Crescent, a member of the Syracuse University Alumni Assn., a charter member of the NYS Sheriff's Assn., a member of the War Birds of America Experimental Aircraft Assn. and the National Flag Foundation. Mikaelian, Araxie And Kevork FREEPORT, Maine Araxie Mikaelian, 90, and Kevork Mikaelian, 89, formerly of Albany, N.Y., recently moved to Freeport to be with their son and daughter-in-law. Araxie Mikaelian, 90, died on September 19, 2005 after a long battle with cancer. Kevork Mikaelian, 89, died unexpectedly on May 3, 2005 at Parkview Hospital in Brunswick, Maine. Kevork and Araxie Mikaelian were married in 1949 in Beirut, Lebanon. He served in the military for four years. He played professional soccer in Egypt. After years of hard work, he started his own business in Lebanon where he became a successful newspaper owner. She was a loving wife and mother who was always at his side supporting him. They moved to New York in 1968 to provide a better life for their family and lived there until 2004 when illness forced them to move to Freeport to be closer to family. They often spoke of their long wonderful life together and the great opportunities America had provided them. Kevork and Araxie will be remembered and missed by family, friends and acquaintances. May their passing be a journey to eternal life. George was also an avid fisherman. Mooney Sr., Donald BELLEVUE, Wash. Donald J. Mooney Sr., a prominent insurance executive and native of Schenectady, died Thursday, September 15, 2005. He was 79. During a 40-year career, Mr. Mooney rose to executive vice president of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the U.S., then the 3rd largest life insurance company and the 7th largest corporation in the U.S. He moved to Cincinnati in 1964 to serve as Equitable's regional VP for the Midwest and the youngest VP in company history. Mr. Mooney served as founding president and CEO of the country's first variable life insurance company, EVLICO and as founding president and CEO of Equitable Life of Japan. A 1950 Siena College graduate, Mr. Mooney played basketball, soccer and baseball for Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake HS and served as class president all four years. Mr. Mooney saw combat as a U.S. Army infantryman in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, including the battle for Okinawa, and served as an MP in the post-war occupation of Tokyo. He was decorated with the Purple Heart and the Bronze Battle Star. Don was a native of Schenectady and settled in Seattle following retirement. Pierro, Geneva HUDSON Geneva Pierro, 87, formerly of Riverledge Road in Hudson, died Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at the Loudonville Home For Adults. Born May 25, 1918 in Stottville, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Marian (Solvada) Yasinski. Mrs. Pierro was a homemaker and lifelong area resident. Geneva was not only a homemaker, she was home to her family, including her parents, siblings, husband, children, their spouses and grandchildren. Asked to leave school after the eighth grade to work in a mill in order to support her family, she learned early the value of being a provider, and her ability to care for others came from a mission of love, and endeared her to those who knew her, whether a lot or a little. For her family, she was a rock, a touchstone that they could always count on, and for that their love will be with her always. She was fun loving and humorous, while maintaining order through discipline and unwavering convictions. In 1937, Geneva became a pioneer in the local sports scene, helping to organize one of the first female softball teams, the Stottville Comets. She also played basketball, and for many years participated in the local leagues that became popular among female athletes. Later, Geneva took up bowling, and became the premier female bowler in the area. She set countless records for high games and series, often breaking her own marks to set new standards. Also an avid golfer, her athleticism allowed her to excel in a variety of sports. She was a member of St. Mary's Church in Hudson and an avid golfer and bowler. She was the leading woman bowler in the area. Surviving are a daughter, Michele Pierro of New York City; a son and daughter-in-law, Louis W. Pierro and Paula Jordan Pierro of Loudonville; five granddaughters, Michelina Jornov of Albany, Amanda Jornov of New York City, Alexandra Jornov of New Paltz, Stephanie Jornov of Albany and Victoria Pierro of Loudonville; two grandsons, Louis Jordan Pierro and Cameron Pierro, both of Loudonville; three brothers, John Yasinski of Calif., Frank Yasinski of Ga. and Ed Yasinski of Hudson; several nieces and nephews. Following graduation, Lanita was employed as an instructor at the school for several years until it was closed. She then became activities director and director of volunteer services at the Nathan Littauer Hospital Nursing Home. Mrs. Pugh was a member of Foothills United Methodist Church of Gloversville, the Bannertown Senior Citizens of Mayfield and the Nathan Littauer Nurses Alumni Association. Survivors include her daughter, Christine C. Yost of Scotia; granddaughter, Holly Yost of Scotia; sister, Constance Brewer (Arthur) of Lake Luzerne; half-sister, Lulumae Hodder of Hudson Falls; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Rose, 67, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Richard valiantly fought cancer for 35 years and never lost his will to fight his illness until the end. Born on December 24, 1937 in Albany, N.Y., he was the son of the late Arden and Henrietta Deleskiewicz Rose. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 45 years, Carol (Kissel) Rose, whom he married on November 14, 1959. He will be eternally missed by his beloved daughter, Holley and her husband Joseph Valiquette Jr. of Clifton Park and his beloved son, David and his wife Sherry of Albany. His cherished grandchildren, Allison Rose Valiquette and Michael Joseph Valiquette of Clifton Park, Alex Richard Rose and Meghan Victoria Rose of Albany also survive him and have wonderful memories of their grandpa to sustain them. Also survived by Derek Rose and his children, Nicholas and Ashton. Richard proudly served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War, stationed at Yokota A.B., Japan from 1956-1958. Tiffany, 85, died Thursday, September 15, 2005 at the V.A. Medical Center Hospital in Albany. Fred was born on the Frederick Farm in Meadowdale and was a lifelong resident of Altamont. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific and was in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked it. He worked as an electrician, first for Bill Secor in Altamont and then for the Local #724, I.B.E.W. in Albany. He was a member of the Boyd Hilton V.F.W. Post and the Helderberg American Legion Post in Altamont. He was also an avid outdoorsman and was a member of the Helderberg Rod and Gun Club and the National Rifle Association. He was predeceased by his wife, Clara E. Tiffany in 1988. Survivors include five children, Patricia (Jeff) Peterson of Manlius, N.Y., Frederick W. (Gail) Tiffany Jr. of Edwards, Mo., David A. (Marlene) Tiffany of Knox, Linda Tiffany (Bob) O'Herin of Knox and Susan E. Donato and her late husband Thomas of Altamont; two sisters, Ruth (Peter) Baldes of Albany and Mary Jane (Bill) Parker of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a stepbrother, Lewis Tiffany of Cambridge, England and stepsister, Dorothy Porter of Phoenix, Ariz. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont. Friends may call on Friday from 4-8 p.m. Burial with military honors will be in Fairview Cemetery. Tracy, 80, of Rotterdam, died Monday afternoon, September 19, 2005 at Ellis Hospital after a short illness. Born in Amsterdam, Bud was the son of the late Roy and Hazel Tracy and a graduate of Amsterdam High School. A route man for Freihofer Baking Co. for over 12 years, he retired in 1986. Bud had also worked for Spalding Bakery for over 20 years. Laverne was predeceased in 1997 by his wife of 43 years, Thelma (Trevett) Tracy and his son, Timothy in 2004. Survivors include his daughter, Sheila A. Mullarkey of Burnt Hills and daughter-in-law Ann Tracy of Schenectady; four grandchildren, Scott Mullarkey of Burnt Hills, Melissa Antonini (Rob) of Schenectady, Jamie Tracy of Schenectady and Michelle Evans (Chris) of Rotterdam; three great-grandchildren, Isabella and Nico Antonini and Gabriel Evans; and a dear friend and neighbor, Frank McGinty of Rotterdam. ALBANY Thelma M. Westervelt, 86, of Albany, died Monday, September 19, 2005 at the Guilderland Center Nursing Home. She was born and raised in Albany and was the daughter of the late Clifford and May Schrieber Westervelt. Thelma worked as a secretary for the New York State Civil Service and for many years with the department of audit and control before retiring in 1977. She is survived by her cousins, Eleanor Reese of Altamont, Dorothy Pearson of Castleton and George Kirkham of Wynantskill. Funeral services will be Friday at 12 noon at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155 - south of Central Ave). Zisserson, of Union Street in Niskayuna, formerly of Ariz., died Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at her residence. She was born in Providence, R.I. Evelyn was a social group worker with the Jewish Community Center in Providence. She later moved to Chicago and worked in the same capacity for the Jewish Community Center. While in Chicago, she was very involved in a mother-child early intervention program. During the war on poverty, she became assistant director of Head Start for the City of Chicago and then human relations officer for the City of Chicago. Evelyn retired to Ariz. and worked for elder hostel programs in southern Calif. While residing in Ariz., she volunteered for organizations including the Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and the Red Cross. She is survived by her children, Berni Zisserson of Boston, Mass. and Warren (Marilynn) Zisserson of Nova Scotia, Canada; sister of Phyllis Friedson (Sidney) of Schenectady, N.Y.; grandmother of Benjamin and Joshua Zisserson. She is also survived by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Ralph Winn. Services at Memory's Garden, Watervliet Shaker Road in Colonie on Friday, September 23, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Northeast NY Chapter, 12 Avis Drive, Latham, NY 12110.
