Eleanor Van Derpoel Andrea, beloved wife of the late John Andrea, died Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at the Prospect Nursing Home, North Bennington. She was born in Schenectady, worked at General Electric during World War II and moved to Albany upon her marriage in 1950. Eleanor was a member of the First Church in Albany (Reformed) and the Railroad Retirement Club. She was a homemaker who found pleasure in her marriage and home. She enjoyed reading and travel and was active in the Kate Allard Group of First Church and served for many years as a volunteer in the church's day care center. Eleanor, a devoted mother, is survived by Janet Van Derpoel-Andrea, Esq. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Church in Albany, Reformed, 110 North Pearl Street, Albany. Bartolomeo, Sylvia Rose COHOES Sylvia Rose Bartolomeo, 59, died peacefully at her home September 22, 2005 surrounded by her loving family after a long heroic struggle with breast cancer. Sylvia was born and lived her entire life in Cohoes. She graduated from the former Keveny Academy in Cohoes. She was the loving daughter of the late Anthony and Rose Pondillo Bartolomeo. She devoted her life to the care of her parents. Sylvia was a very devout, religious person and was deeply devoted to her Lord Jesus and His most holy Mother Mary. She willingly gave much of her time and energy to her faith and prayer life. For most of her life, Sylvia attended daily Mass and received her Lord in the Holy Eucharist. She was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church and a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society. For many years, she attended various local churches where devotions were held each month at night to adore and honor her Divine Lord Jesus, exposed in the Blessed Sacrament. Sylvia was one of the original leaders of St. Bernard's First Saturday Devotions Program which honors our Blessed Mother with special devotions. She also regularly attended First Friday and First Saturday devotions at Holy Trinity Church in Troy. She was directly involved in and a leader for St. Bernard's Prayer Group in honoring our Blessed Mother by daily recitation of the rosary after Mass at St. Bernard's Church. Sylvia visited many shrines, including the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima at Washington, N.J., the Shrine of Devine Mercy in Stockbridge, Mass. and, on many occasions, the Martyrs Shrine at Auriesville, N.Y. Unknown to many of her closest friends, Sylvia had a true devotion to angels. She prayed to them, and to the seven Archangels, seeking their protection. Each day, she would recite a special prayer and had a sincere devotion to her own guardian angel. Sylvia was employed for many years as an office clerk for the NYS Assembly. Sylvia was the devoted and loving sister of Grace M. Brennan of Latham, Yolanda (Frank) Romeo of Clifton Park and Anthony (Margo) Bartolomeo of Schroon Lake. Cairns, 88, formerly of Clifton Park, died on Friday, September 23, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy after a brief illness. He was born in Susquehanna, Pa. on February 6, 1917 and was the son of the late Joseph and Rosa Seiler Cairns. Jim was the beloved husband of the late Viola Scott Cairns. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He moved to Clifton Park after the death of his wife. Jim retired as a court officer from the Hackensack Court Administration after more than 25 years of service and he had been a communicant of Corpus Christi Church in Ushers. He is the brother of the late Joseph Cairns and is survived by cousins and nieces. Falconer, Marion L. BALLSTON SPA Marion L. Falconer, 94, formerly of Burnt Hills, died peacefully at the Saratoga County Maplewood Manor on Friday, September 23, 2005. Born in Lynn, Mass., on August 23, 1911, Marion was the daughter of the late Clarence and Florence (Taylor) Williams. She was raised and educated in Lynn and attended Boston University, where she received her bachelor of arts degree in 1933. From 1936-42, she and her late husband, Raymond E. Falconer, managed the AMC Cardigan Mountain Ski Lodge in Alexandria, N.H. During the following four years, she taught Latin, French and English in the Bristol, N.H. school system. In 1947, she and her husband moved to Burnt Hills. Marion resumed her career in 1957, initially serving as a substitute teacher at the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School before becoming a full-time Latin teacher in 1962. In that same year, she enrolled in the graduate studies program at the State University of New York at Albany, eventually earning a master of arts degree in education in 1966. Marion retired from the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school system in 1971. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Burnt Hills for more than 50 years, and served for a time as church historian. She is survived by a son, Phillip D. (Jane) Falconer of Scotia, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Trevor R. Falconer of Scotia and Erin E. Falconer of Falls Church, Va.; a sister, Phyllis L. (Roland) Stickney of Anchorage, Alaska; and two nieces, Donna York and Diane (Alan) Jones, both of Anchorage. Mr. Kelly was a World War II Army veteran, having served as a staff sergeant in both the Pacific and European Theatres. He was a printer for the NYS Court of Appeals for over 20 years, retiring in the early 1980s. He had previously worked for Standard Furniture as a warehouse foreman. After his retirement from the state, he worked part-time for St. Peter's Hospital in the security department. Mr. Kelly was a communicant of Holy Cross Church and a member of the Holy Cross Men's Association. He was also a member of the Joseph Zaloga American Legion Post. Maciariello, 80, passed away quietly, surrounded by her caring family and the love of our Lord and all His saints at St. Mary's Hospice on Friday, September 23, 2005 following a long and courageous battle against multiple ailments. The former Nora Palmer (Palmieri) was born on July 20, 1925 in Mechanicville. As a lifelong resident, she attended Mechanicville Public Schools and was a communicant of the Assumption St. Paul Church where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society, a former officer and member of the Peter-Purcell Post and the Senior Citizen Center. Previously employed by the Korell Dress Factory she later retired from the NYS Department of Tax and Finance. Mrs. Maciariello was the only daughter of the late Mariannina Fondano Lucarelli (1976) and Carmine Palmieri (1929) and her stepfather, Antonio Lucarelli (1974). She was also predeceased by a brother, Frank Palmieri (1927). Mrs. Maciariello's husband of 40 years, Nicholas, passed away in 1988, whom she missed tremendously. Mrs. Maciariello is survived by her daughter and husband, her caregivers, Concetta and Lydie Carey of Mechanicville, Carmen Sr. and Rita Maciariello of Clifton Park and Nicholas Jr. and Marybeth Maciariello of Riverside, Mechanicville. Nora was extremely proud of her children and cherished her grandchildren, Nicola and Garret Billert, Concetta and Joseph Hmura, Kristie and Christopher Tamasi, Nicholas Maciariello III, Carmen Maciariello Jr., Marc Maciariello and Marnie B. Maciariello. Nora was very happy to have known and loved her great-grandchildren, Megan and Nicholas Billert and Sydney Hmura. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and very good friends. Nora's life revolved around her family and her belief in God. She was the caregiver for her mother, a loving wife to a good husband and chief cook to a large family. She loved to play bocce, cards, crocheting blankets for her grandchildren, going to lunch with the Birthday Girls, especially traveling with friends to the Shrine of St. Anne (Quebec). Manley, 77, of Guilderland, died September 22, 2005 at home, with family by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Marguerite Muir. She graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in Grand Rapids and Hollins College in Va., where she received a degree in French. From 1949-1950, she spent a year in Paris, where she studied at the Sorbonne. She returned to France in 1953 and taught 4th grade to American students there. The years in Paris were an experience she always treasured. She then received her master's degree in education from the New York State Teachers College and taught 4th grade at Lincoln School in Schenectady from 1954-1957. She subsequently developed an innovative program for teaching French to elementary aged children and successfully implemented it in the Schenectady school system from 1957 until her marriage in 1962. Phyllis was an avid and skilled duplicate bridge player. She played in local tournaments regularly and traveled to more than 80 regional bridge tournaments in the Northeast and Canada, and to national tournaments in Boston and Montreal. Her study of, and natural talent for, the game led to the accumulation of over 4200 masterpoints, giving her the rank of gold life master. She was well on her way to diamond life master (5000 masterpoints). Recently, she was honored with the Marvin Friedman Award which is given to the player who most exemplifies courteous and sportsmanlike behavior at the bridge table, and who helps to make all players feel welcome. Her husband of 43 years, Douglas, predeceased her in January. Herman Natowitz passed away peacefully on September 23, 2005 at the Highland Nursing Home in Massena after a brief illness. Born October 10, 1911 in New York City, he was the son of the late Bernard Natowitz and Rose Schoengut Natowitz. He moved to Saranac Lake in the 1920s where he graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1931. He was a founding member of Congregation Beth El in Potsdam, N.Y. and a member of the Raquette River Masonic Lodge. He was a lifelong student of current events and geography. He considered himself a died-in-the-wool Roosevelt Democrat and was a model of tolerance. His life was guided by unselfishness and compassion for the less fortunate. He loved Potsdam and its fine people. He moved there in 1936 where he and his father operated the Ideal Bakery. Mr. Natowitz served in the United States Army from 1943-45, during which he guarded German prisoners of war in France and Germany. He was married to the Late Suzanne Basmajian of Massena, N.Y. on November 1, 1951 and remained her loving and devoted husband until her death from Alzheimer's Disease in 2000. Following the closing of the Ideal in 1956, he managed Pearl's Department Store. In 1962, he opened Herman's Mens Wear on Market Street in Potsdam where he worked in partnership with his wife until their retirement in 1976. Surviving are a son, Robert and daughter-in-law Robena DeMatteo Natowitz of Princetown, N.Y.; grandsons, Sean Flatt of Amsterdam, N.Y., Ryan Flatt and his wife Julie Brasch Flatt of Holbrook, N.Y.; a sister, Regina (Jean) Natowitz of Scarsdale, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews including, Joseph Natowitz of College Stations, Texas, Joanne Abbott of Watertown, N.Y., Cindy Morguelen of Louisville, Ky. and Alan Natowitz of Scarsdale. He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph, formerly of Watertown, N.Y. and long-time Massena, N.Y. businessman, Stanley Natowitz. She remained an area resident for her entire life. Jean worked for many years for Montgomery Ward as an auditing clerk but her real love was being a homemaker for her family. In her free time, she loved to read. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Douglas Ford Schoonmaker, who died in 1992. TROY Thomas Harrison Sullivan, 72, died in the comfort of his home on Thursday, September 22, 2005. Born in Green Island on March 17, 1933, he was the son of the late John and Marjorie Harrison Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan was a resident of Troy for the majority of his life and was a graduate of the La Salle Institute in Troy. He later graduated from Siena College and attended post-graduate studies at Cornell University. He was also a graduate of the Worldwide College of Auctioneering in Mason City Iowa. Mr. Sullivan was employed by both the State of New York and Rensselaer County in various agencies which included geriatrics and child protective services. He retired in 1989 after 40 years of employment. Mr. Sullivan had a longtime appreciation of antiques and was an antique appraiser. At one time, he simultaneously operated three antique stores in Troy and Lansingburgh. He was a lifetime member of the Troy Lodge of Elks and was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church in North Greenbush, where he served as an usher, Eucharistic minister and lector. He also enjoyed his Eucharistic ministry at the Springs Nursing Home in Troy. Mr. Sullivan wintered for the past 15 years in Ponce Inlet, Fla. He was an aficionado of thoroughbred race horses and enjoyed fishing, golf and his Irish heritage. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosemary Shear Sullivan; his son, Chris Sullivan of Brunswick; his daughters, Margie (Tom) Job of Troy, Jackie (Chuck) Spoon of Green Island, Cyndy (Peter) Lee of Troy and Lori Sullivan of Ballston Spa; also surviving are 18 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, several cousins and many good friends. Taylor Sr., Robert Cobb NISKAYUNA Robert Cobb Taylor Sr. of Millington Road, Niskayuna, passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of Friday, September 23, 2005 at his home. He was 83 years old. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Brigadier General William A. Taylor and Helen Fadden Taylor. He attended Poly Preparatory Country Day School in Brooklyn. Mr. Taylor enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served in the European Theater during World War II as a first lieutenant in the 653rd bomb group as a navigator, flying 51 missions in B-17 and Dehaviland Mosquito aircraft. After the war, Bob graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. He worked for the General Electric Company as a professional engineer for 35 years. He retired from Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in 1986. After retirement, Bob realized his dream of traveling through the USA in his motor home. Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Joan; two sons, Robert C. Taylor Jr. of Niskayuna and William A. Taylor and his wife Janet of Bolton, Mass.; three daughters, Patricia E. Taylor of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Joanne M. Taylor of Bolton Landing, N.Y. and Aimee A. Miller of Ballston Spa, N.Y. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Joanna R.
