ALBANY Mary A. Acker, 84, of Albany, died Thursday, September 22, 2005 at her residence surrounded by her loving family following a long illness. Daughter of the late John A. and Georgianna Gilman O'Connor of Albany, she was born in Utica, N.Y. and is a direct decedent of Senator Nicolas Gilman of N.H., crafter and signer of the Bill of Rights and discoverer of the springs in Saratoga (Congress Park). She was a Democratic committee person for the sixth ward for many years. She also belonged to the Polish American Citizens Lady Auxiliary. Mary Acker was active with the Blanchard Post in Delmar. Beloved wife of 57 years, Harold (Chappie) E. Acker; loving mother of two sons, Gary Rowe-Acker and David E. Acker of Albany. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Estelle is the devoted and loving wife of Dorman F. Avery. She died while they were holding hands. Estelle is the loving mother of Keith, Kevin, and Karen Avery; grandmother Grammy to Kyle and Kayla Avery, grandmother Bibsey to Angela and Avery David Chapman. She is the mother-in-law of Kim D. Avery and Dr. Richard H. Chapman. Her professional life was spent mainly in education. Estelle was a member of Emanuel Baptist Church in Albany. Estelle developed and coordinated a cadre of human relations facilities and consultants, affectionately known as the Group or the H.R. Gang, who conducted workshops and conferences for people involved and concerned about education statewide. She was founding member of the June Drive Literary Club, and was also a member of the Scarlet Chapeaux of the Red Hat Society. A service of remembrance and celebration will take place at Emmanuelle Baptist Church, 275 State Street, Albany on Saturday, October 15, 2005 at 3:00 P.M. Bartolomeo, Sylvia Rose COHOES Sylvia Rose Bartolomeo, 59, died peacefully at her home September 22, 2005 surrounded by her loving family after a long heroic struggle with breast cancer. Sylvia was born and lived her entire life in Cohoes. She graduated from the former Keveny Academy in Cohoes. She was the loving daughter of the late Anthony and Rose Pondillo Bartolomeo. She devoted her life to the care of her parents. Sylvia was a very devout, religious person and was deeply devoted to her Lord Jesus and His most holy Mother Mary. She willingly gave much of her time and energy to her faith and prayer life. For most of her life, Sylvia attended daily Mass and received her Lord in the Holy Eucharist. She was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church and a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society. For many years, she attended various local churches where devotions were held each month at night to adore and honor her Divine Lord Jesus, exposed in the Blessed Sacrament. Sylvia was one of the original leaders of St. Bernard's First Saturday Devotions Program which honors our Blessed Mother with special devotions. She also regularly attended First Friday and First Saturday devotions at Holy Trinity Church in Troy. She was directly involved in and a leader for St. Bernard's Prayer Group in honoring our Blessed Mother by daily recitation of the rosary after Mass at St. Bernard's Church. Sylvia visited many shrines, including the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima at Washington, N.J., the Shrine of Devine Mercy in Stockbridge, Mass. and, on many occasions, the Martyrs Shrine at Auriesville, N.Y. Unknown to many of her closest friends, Sylvia had a true devotion to angels. She prayed to them, and to the seven Archangels, seeking their protection. Each day, she would recite a special prayer and had a sincere devotion to her own guardian angel. Sylvia was the devoted and loving sister of Grace M. Brennan of Latham, Yolanda (Frank) Romeo of Clifton Park and Anthony (Margo) Bartolomeo of Schroon Lake. She is also survived by 13 adoring nieces and nephews, Cathy (John) Maiuccoro of Guilderland, Mary Grace (Jack) Reed of Farmington, Conn., Jimmy (Teresa) Brennan of Latham, Jimmy (Denise) Romeo of Clifton Park, John Brennan of Herkimer, Shari (Arthur) Derico of Rochester Hills, Mich., William Brennan of Albany, Tommy (Terri) Brennan of Cohoes, Anthony (Susan) Brennan of Clifton Park, Tony (Johanna) Bartolomeo of East Greenbush, Teresa (Vincent) Haley of Olmstedville, Gail (Armand) Fiore of North Hudson and William Brannon of Latham. Falconer, 94, formerly of Burnt Hills, died peacefully at the Saratoga County Maplewood Manor on Friday, September 23, 2005. Born in Lynn, Mass., on August 23, 1911, Marion was the daughter of the late Clarence and Florence (Taylor) Williams. She was raised and educated in Lynn and attended Boston University, where she received her bachelor of arts degree in 1933. From 1936-42, she and her late husband, Raymond E. Falconer, managed the AMC Cardigan Mountain Ski Lodge in Alexandria, N.H. During the following four years, she taught Latin, French and English in the Bristol, N.H. school system. In 1947, she and her husband moved to Burnt Hills. Marion resumed her career in 1957, initially serving as a substitute teacher at the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School before becoming a full-time Latin teacher in 1962. In that same year, she enrolled in the graduate studies program at the State University of New York at Albany, eventually earning a master of arts degree in education in 1966. Marion retired from the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake school system in 1971. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Burnt Hills for more than 50 years, and served for a time as church historian. She is survived by a son, Phillip D. (Jane) Falconer of Scotia, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Trevor R. Falconer of Scotia and Erin E. Falconer of Falls Church, Va.; a sister, Phyllis L. (Roland) Stickney of Anchorage, Alaska; and two nieces, Donna York and Diane (Alan) Jones, both of Anchorage. Born and educated in Albany, he was the son of the late Thomas F. and Anna Galafaro Kelly. Mr. Kelly was a World War II Army veteran, having served as a staff sergeant in both the Pacific and European Theatres. He was a printer for the NYS Court of Appeals for over 20 years, retiring in the early 1980s. He had previously worked for Standard Furniture as a warehouse foreman. After his retirement from the state, he worked part-time for St. Peter's Hospital in the security department. Mr. Kelly was a communicant of Holy Cross Church and a member of the Holy Cross Men's Association. He was also a member of the Joseph Zaloga American Legion Post. LaRosa, 70, of Colonie, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2005 at his home. Born in Manhattan, he was the son of the late Archille and Carmella LaRosa. Mr. LaRosa had lived in the Capital District since 1983. He was a news stand operator for 51 years, more recently running his news stand at the Empire State Plaza for the last 14 years. Mr. LaRosa loved listening to sports radio and enjoyed good food and dining out. Ralph is the beloved husband of 25 years to Rose M. LaRosa. He is the devoted father of Linda Silva, Jeffrey LaRosa, Chris LaRosa and Gina LaRosa. He is the brother of Angela Narducci and Frank LaRosa. Maciariello, 80, passed away quietly, surrounded by her caring family and the love of our Lord and all His saints at St. Mary's Hospice on Friday, September 23, 2005 following a long and courageous battle against multiple ailments. The former Nora Palmer (Palmieri) was born on July 20, 1925 in Mechanicville. As a lifelong resident, she attended Mechanicville Public Schools and was a communicant of the Assumption St. Paul Church where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society, a former officer and member of the Peter-Purcell Post and the Senior Citizen Center. Previously employed by the Korell Dress Factory she later retired from the NYS Department of Tax and Finance. Mrs. Maciariello was the only daughter of the late Mariannina Fondano Lucarelli (1976) and Carmine Palmieri (1929) and her stepfather, Antonio Lucarelli (1974). She was also predeceased by a brother, Frank Palmieri (1927). Mrs. Maciariello's husband of 40 years, Nicholas, passed away in 1988, whom she missed tremendously. Mrs. Maciariello is survived by her daughter and husband, her caregivers, Concetta and Lydie Carey of Mechanicville, Carmen Sr. and Rita Maciariello of Clifton Park and Nicholas Jr. and Marybeth Maciariello of Riverside, Mechanicville. Nora was extremely proud of her children and cherished her grandchildren, Nicola and Garret Billert, Concetta and Joseph Hmura, Kristie and Christopher Tamasi, Nicholas Maciariello III, Carmen Maciariello Jr., Marc Maciariello and Marnie B. Maciariello. Nora was very happy to have known and loved her great-grandchildren, Megan and Nicholas Billert and Sydney Hmura. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and very good friends. Nora's life revolved around her family and her belief in God. She was the caregiver for her mother, a loving wife to a good husband and chief cook to a large family. She loved to play bocce, cards, crocheting blankets for her grandchildren, going to lunch with the Birthday Girls, especially traveling with friends to the Shrine of St. Anne (Quebec). ALBANY Laurence C. Scheer, 58, died Thursday, September 22, 2005 at the New England Medical Center in Boston, Mass. Born in Albany, he was the son of the late Jerome and Evelyn Sussman Scheer. Larry recently retired as co-owner of Larry's Foreign Auto Service in West Albany. Among his many interests in life, he especially loved flying airplanes, golfing and sailing. Larry was very proud of his Metroland Best Of award several years ago. (Bob) Sutherland Jr., 84, died peacefully on September 23, 2005 after a brief illness. Bob was the son of the late Helen Mason and Robert P. Sutherland Sr. He was born on January 16, 1921, grew up in Green Island and later moving to Grotto Court in Watervliet. He lived on Wampum Drive in Saratoga Springs for the past 32 years. Bob was married to his late wife Margaret M. (Peggy) Brady for over 55 years. He is survived by five children, Cheryl (Michael) Fries of N.C., Paul (Zbeth) Sutherland of Saratoga Springs, Aileen (James) Campbell of Clifton Park, Peter (Elizabeth) Sutherland of Watervliet and Patrice (Paul) Martterer of Rexford; eight grandchildren, Douglas and Karen Fries, Halley Sutherland, Gregory Campbell, Rebecca and Amanda Sutherland and Erin and Lisa Martterer; and one great-grandson, Aiden Fries. His brother, John W. Sutherland and several nieces and nephews also survive him. Bob's family moved to Brooklyn for a short period of time and he had the distinction of graduating from eighth grade in both Brooklyn and Heatly Elementary School in Green Island the same year when they returned to Green Island. He attended Hudson Valley Community College where he studied TV/Radio engineering. He worked as a TV repairman, back in the day when TV's had tubes and antennas, operating his own repair business for several years. He was also employed by the New York State Thruway Authority. Finally he worked for several years at local radio and TV stations. He retired at the age of 70 from WNYT (formally WAST) Channel 13. Ed Dague gave a very moving on-air tribute to his many years of tireless service as an audio engineer. Bob was a dedicated father and devoted husband. After his retirement, he and Peggy enjoyed traveling, often visiting out of town relatives. At that time he became a master gardener and volunteered extensively with Saratoga Cooperative Extension where he learned to grow and then maintained a beautiful rose garden. He also enjoyed growing African Violets and Daylilies. He volunteered as an usher at the Church of St. Peter in Saratoga Springs for many years as well. When the Saratoga Auto Museum opened, Bob was the first person to sign up as a volunteer there. At the auto museum, he was able to combine several of his passions: love of cars, love of photography, and his enjoyment of talking to people. He continued as a volunteer with the museum until recently. Bob was an avid baseball fan, first for the Brooklyn Dodgers and later as a convert to the Yankees. Taylor Sr., Robert Cobb NISKAYUNA Robert Cobb Taylor Sr. of Millington Road, Niskayuna, passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of Friday, September 23, 2005 at his home. He was 83 years old. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Brigadier General William A. Taylor and Helen Fadden Taylor. He attended Poly Preparatory Country Day School in Brooklyn. Mr. Taylor enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served in the European Theater during World War II as a first lieutenant in the 653rd Squadron of the 25th bomb group as a navigator, flying 51 missions in B-17 and Dehaviland Mosquito aircraft. After the war, Bob graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. He worked for the General Electric Company as a professional engineer for 35 years. He retired from Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in 1986. After retirement, Bob realized his dream of traveling through the USA in his motor home. Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Joan; two sons, Robert C. Taylor Jr. of Niskayuna and William A. Taylor and his wife Janet of Bolton, Mass.; three daughters, Patricia E. Taylor of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Joanne M. Taylor of Bolton Landing, N.Y. and Aimee A. Miller of Ballston Spa, N.Y. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Joanna R. Singh of Ware, Mass., Stephanie C. Taylor and Nathan R. Taylor of Bolton, Mass., Catherine (Katy) L. Miller, Rebecca L. Miller and Douglas T.
