Beloved and devoted mother of Charleen Akullian and the late John Paul Akullian; widow of John Akullian, who died in 1980. A lifelong resident of Watervliet, she was the daughter of the late Alice and Sarkis Vartigian; the sister of Ralph and Ann Vartigian of North Greenbush and the late Paul Vartigian and Lucy V. Kasparian; the aunt of Deborah Erlandson, David Vartigian, Daniel Vartigian and their families. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked outside the home; first, in the dress department of the old Denby's Department Store in Troy and then in the auditing department of the Troy Savings Bank, from which she retired in 1984. Becker, Janet GLENVILLE Janet Becker, 71, of Saratoga Road, formerly of Dartmouth Street, Schenectady, passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2005 with cancer. Janet was born in Schenectady and was the daughter of the late Edward and Etta Mae Monty. A member of the Rotterdam Lore, she was a graduate of Schenectady High School. Janet spent most of her life being a good mother to her children, and a devoted wife for 32 years until her husband, Robert, passed in 1984. Survivors include her sister, Etta Mae Lofstead and her husband George; brothers, Edward Monty and his wife Margaret of Schenectady and her favorite shopping buddies, her brother and sister-in-law, William and Beverly Monty. She is also survived by her children, Elisa Futia and her husband Marc Futia of Delmar, Todd Becker and his wife Jean of Edinburg, Leslie Becker and his friend Deborah of Schenectady, Robert and his friend Lisa of Glenville; and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Janet is also survived by numerous friends and companions who brought her joy and comfort throughout her life. WATERVLIET Frank J. Bessmer, 79, a lifelong Watervliet resident, died unexpectedly at his home on Monday, September 26, 2005. Born in Watervliet on May 12, 1926, Frank was a son of the late Frank and Mary Gazda Bessmer and he was the beloved husband of the late Isabelle Prefore Bessmer. He was employed for 42 years by the Norton Company (Behr-Manning) in Watervliet and retired in 1985. Frank was also employed by Siesel's Flower Farm in Latham where he was loved like he was one of the family. In his retirement, Frank took great pride in watching his grandchildren. Recent years also found him enjoying sitting on his porch, the company of his neighbors and visiting his friends at the Classico Barber Shop in Clifton Park and at the Latham 76 Diner. Frank was a member of the former Pulaski Club of Watervliet and enjoyed bowling, fishing and shooting pool. He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Watervliet. Frank is survived by his daughters, Michelle Ann (Michael) Prestipino of Latham and Kimberly Ann Lampkin of North Greenbush; his grandchildren, Gregory F. Sedefian, David S. Sedefian, Ashley J. Prestipino and Ryan F. Lampkin; his sister and brother, Florence Mary Bessmer of Clifton Park and Robert Bessmer of West Sand Lake and several nieces and nephews. Hack Charbonneau Sr., 70, of Veeder Drive, Colonie, died suddenly Monday, September 26, 2005 at his residence embraced by his loving family after a four-month battle with lung cancer. Born and educated in Cohoes, he was the son of the late Nelson J. and Eva LaCombe Charbonneau and beloved husband of Shirley Berdar Charbonneau of Colonie. Hack resided in Cohoes for most of his life and relocated to Colonie in 1979. He was a veteran of the United States Navy Reserve and a volunteer aboard the Navy ship, USS Slater, moored in the port of Albany. Hack was a member of CAP DESA and was employed with the NYS Department of Transportation where he was the supervisor of drilling operations, retiring in 1990. He was a communicant of St. Paul the Apostle Church in Schenectady. He enjoyed motorcycling, hunting, fishing and woodworking. Besides his wife Shirley, he is survived by his loving sons, Daniel R. Charbonneau of Beloit, Wis., Leo H. Charbonneau Jr. and his wife Colleen of N.C. and Christopher E. Charbonneau of Cohoes; stepson, William Schermerhorn and his wife Christina of Nev.; cherished grandchildren, Christine, Jeremy and Casey Charbonneau and T.J. Murphy; brothers, Lawrence G. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was first employed by the state department of unemployment insurance and later by the Watervliet Arsenal, from where he retired in 1973 after 32 years of service. Eileen Kenna Landis, beloved wife and mother, age 53, passed away in her home on September 26, 2005. Eileen pursued a career in medical coding, where she achieved the title of certified physician coder. She was employed at the Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center as a radiology professional coder. In January 2005, she was awarded Employee of the Month. She had been a nurse for many years. Born in Albany, N.Y. on December 3, 1951, she was the daughter of Virginia Beinkafner Kenna of Albany and the late James M. Kenna. She was a 1970 graduate of Guilderland High School, Guilderland, N.Y. and a 1971 graduate of Mary McCellan Hospital School of Nursing, Cambridge, N.Y. She attended the American Health Information Management Association to become a registered health information technologist. Eileen was a member of St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, Hershey. Eileen was an avid quilter, having donated her time and energies in this area specifically to making quilts for infants with HIV. Eileen was a collector of Longanberger baskets. She was an active member of the Hershey Football family and the Hershey High School Wrestling Booster Club, as both of her children played football and wrestled throughout their high school years. Her spirit and generosity extended to all aspects of her family and community where she will be sorely missed. Levenberg, Irving COLONIE Irving Levenberg, 89, of Stella Terrace, Colonie, died Sunday, September 25, 2005 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital. Mr. Levenberg was born in Portland, Maine and has been a Capital District resident for many years. He was a staff sergeant for the U.S. Army and was a decorated World War II veteran. He served in the 10th Mountain Division. Mr. Levenberg was the honored recipient of a Purple Heart and (2) Bronze Stars. He was employed for many years by M&B Plumbing in Albany. He was a member of the VFW Post #8692 in Colonie, the Scully American Legion Post and H.B. Kuhn Senior Center in Colonie where he served as past president. He served on the town of Colonie Advisory Board for seven years. He was instrumental in creating puzzles and cars for the Toys for Tots Program. He was talented and artistic. Some of his hobbies included woodworking, cooking and water colors. He is survived by his loving wife, Edith Holmes Levenberg; beloved father of Louise Levenberg Plue and her fiance John Yanson; stepfather of Florence Clas Knowlton and her husband Ernest; cherished grandfather of Keri Escobedo, Carl Plue and step-grandfather of Ernest Knowlton Jr., Lacey Zuknick, Paul David Knowlton, Joy Ann Allyne, Jeremy Knowlton and Rachel Bush. McMartin, Barbara CANADA LAKE, N.Y. Barbara McMartin, 73, of Canada Lake, died on September 27, 2005 of breast cancer. She is survived by her loving and caring husband, Walter Alexander Reid. Since their marriage in 1982, his tireless devotion to her and her work has been monumental. Their shared passion is most beautifully evident in their magnificent, amphitheater garden. Survivors from her first marriage are James McMartin Long and his partner Anita Miller of Canada Lake, Nancy Ellen Long and her husband Richard Loomis of New Hartford and Margaret Long Lawrence and her husband Robert Lawrence of Ossining; two stepdaughters also survive, Karen Reid of Minneapolis, Mn. and Pauline Reid of Reston, Va.; grandchildren include Alicia Loomis, Catherine Loomis, Elizabeth Lawrence and Daniel Lawrence. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Daniel McMartin of Louisville, Ky., her sister, Patricia Maier of Lexington, Mass.; and her nieces, nephews and stepmother. Born on November 18, 1931, she was the daughter of Dr. D. Malcolm McMartin, Johnstown physician, and Barbara Clark McMartin. Growing up in Johnstown, she became the valedictorian of the Class of 1949. She graduated from Vassar College, cum laude in mathematics in 1964, received a master's degree from Hunter College and, in 1972, she received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the graduate division of City University of New York. In 1972, McMartin turned from mathematics and became involved in the environmental movement in the Adirondacks where her primary focus was the nature, culture and management in the park. She served as vice-president of the Adirondack Mountain Club and the Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks and was a member of many environmental groups. In the years between 1972 and 2005, she wrote 25 books, both guide books and histories of the Adirondacks. She wrote and maintained the popular eleven-book Discover series, which covers all regions of the Adirondack Park for outdoor people. Her other guides include The Adirondack Park, A Wildlands Quilt; Fifty Hikes in the Adirondacks; Fifty Hikes in the Hudson Valley; and three books for young people on hiking, camping and canoeing. In 1976, she completed Caroga, an Adirondack Town Recalls its Past. Her other histories include Hides, Hemlocks and Adirondack History, The Great Forest of the Adirondacks, To the Lake of the Skies (story of the Benedicts), The Glove Cities, Perspectives on the Adirondacks, The Privately Owned Adirondacks and Adirondack Timeline. She also wrote a series of pamphlets and Citizen's Guides for the Adirondack Park Agency. She was proudest of her service on DEC advisory committees, the High Peaks AC from 1974 to 1978 and the Forest Preserve AC from 1979 to 2003. She chaired the FPAC from 1979 to 2003 where she helped write many DEC policies. She served as volunteer curator at the Caroga Historical Museum and at the Fulton County Museum. She had numerous photograph exhibits of her work and published many magazine articles. In 1992, she chaired the NYS Adirondack Park Centennial. Among the many awards were the Founder's Day Award from the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake as well as both the Adirondack Communicator and Adirondack Heritage Awards from the Adirondack Council. Her friends, DEC staffers and several Adirondack organizations honored her as her illness progressed and gave her many wonderful notes of commendation for her work. Craig Ryder, 37, of Garfield Road and formerly of Dunstable, Mass., died Monday, September 26, 2005 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy, N.Y., after a long battle with cancer. Born in Nashua, N.H., on December 11, 1967, he is the loving son of Arnold and Marjorie (Pineo) Ryder of Dunstable, Mass. Craig was raised and educated in Dunstable and was a 1985 graduate of the Groton-Dunstable High School. Craig later graduated from the University of Lowell with a degree in political science and then received his master's degree in non-profit administration from Suffolk University in Boston, Mass. He was employed by the State of Mass. in Boston as the associate director of tobacco control for five years and for the past two years was employed by the New York State Department of Public Health in Albany, N.Y. as also the associate director of tobacco control. Craig was a lifelong Boy Scout and was a vigil honor member of the Order of the Arrow. He was camp director for many years at Camp Wah-Tut-Ca in Northwood, N.H., where he not only supervised many of the programs for the Boy Scouts but realized that, other than his beloved family, this was so much a part of his heart and soul. He was devoted to serving others and dedicated years of service to the youth and community with his time at the Wah-Tut-Ca Scouting Reservation. He was well-respected and a brother to many. As The West Wind, his vigil honor name, he will be a lasting memory to us all and will be in our hearts and minds forever. In addition to his parents, Craig is survived by his beloved wife, Heather Ann (Bonneau) Ryder, whom he married on November 4, 1995 in Dunstable; two beautiful daughters, Laura Anne and Allison Marie Ryder; a sister, Anne Ryder of Dunstable; and a brother, Douglas Ryder of North Sutton, N.H. He is the son-in-law of Jerry and Janice Bonneau of Geraldine, Ala.; brother-in-law of Susan Luongo of Townsend, Mass., Lt. Tammy Michelli, US Coast Guard, Norwalk, Conn. and William C. He was born in Souderton, Pa. and was the son of the late Issac and Mary Shelly Shade. Ray was a graduate of Souderton High School and was just recently elected to their hall of fame. He was a US Navy veteran, serving from January 10, 1945 until June 25, 1946 when he was honorably discharged as a seaman 2nd class. Ray received the American Theatre Medal and the Victory Medal. He received his S.B. and S.M. degrees from MIT in chemical engineering and his Ph.D. from RPI. He started with the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in 1951 and joined the GE Corporate R&D Center in 1953 where he held several managerial positions. In 1970, he joined the staff of RPI as an assistant professor and returned to GE at the silicone products department in Waterford where he retired as manager of advanced technology in 1990. After retirement, Dr. Shade continued his professional career in the R&D area as a special consultant in R&D program development. He was an active participant in many professional societies including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Chemical Society, American Association of Advanced Science and the New York Academy of Science. He was also a member of Sigma Xi, Chi Epsilon and Phi Lamda Upsilon honor societies. Dr. Shade held several patents in the area of advance materials and chemical processing, both in the United States and many foreign countries. Dr. Shade also received the Silver Medallion Award for his patent contributions. He received the Duschman Award from the G.E. Corporate R&D Center for his outstanding contributions in the area of catalysis. He was also recognized for his many contributions to the MIT Practice School. During retirement, Dr. Shade continued his desire to help young students by creating and coordinating an innovative, intergenerational tutoring program linking teachers, scientists and engineers with students at Shenendehowa High School in the areas of mathematics and science. It was for this program that he was honored by the State of New York by receiving the state office for the aging's Achievement is Ageless award. He also received the Shenendehowa Superintendent's Award. This program, under the auspices of the Shenendehowa Senior Citizens' Center Care Links Volunteer program, started in the fall of 1997 and helps more than 1000 students each year. Seeing young minds flood with the light of understanding filled Ray with an immense joy. These awards were examples of Dr. Shade's lifelong aspirations to mentor and develop students, engineers and scientists. Ray also received the key to the Town Clifton Park for his other outstanding contributions. He was an active member and participant of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Clifton Park. He was also a member of the American Legion Mohawk Post 1450 in Halfmoon. He is the beloved husband of Nancy Gray Shade, whom he married on May 17, 1952. He is the devoted father of Mrs. Karyn Shade and her husband Gordon of Clifton Park; brother of the late Lester, Howard and Miriam Shade King; also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held Monday morning at 10:00 from the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 8 Northcrest Drive in Clifton Park with Pastor Chuck officiating. There will be a celebration of Bill's life at the Studio of Bridge and Games, 1639 Eastern Parkway, Schenectady, N.Y. on Saturday, October 29 at 12:00. Bill and his wife Norma have devoted the past 31 years to promoting and preserving bridge, chess and war games which we hope have brought pleasure and friendships to many of our players. Bill's service in the front lines of Korea shaped much of his life. He was a humanitarian and put his family and everyone else in his circle ahead of himself. He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Mary Goska Shelly, and his brother, Thomas. He is survived by his wife Norma; sister, Florence Kennedy of Calif.; sons, Michael of S.C., Thomas of Fla.; daughters, Patricia Starkey (Steven) of Fla., Dorothy of Schenectady; and grandson, Erin of S.C. He is also survived by his extended family, his mother-in-law and companion Brunhilde Fitzgibbons, Charles Miller of NYC, Steven Miller, Renee Santoro (and Victor), Justin Miller, all of Esperance, N.Y., Sara Miller of NYC; five great-grandchildren. The family is grateful to Victoria Roberts, Laryssa Robertson, Marianna Atwell and Glenn White, all of whom cared for him during his long illness and, along with his family, brought love and joy to his life. SCHENECTADY Dorothy D. Sleeter, 92, of Glenwood Blvd., died Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at Saratoga Hospital after a short illness. Mrs. Sleeter was born in Albany and was a graduate of Delmar High School and had earned a licensed practical nurse degree. She moved to Schenectady in 1944. She was a past matron of Onesquethaw Chapter #818 Order of the Eastern Star, Queen Cyrene Temple #18 Daughters of the Nile and was the recorder for 35 years. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and the Dorcas Cirlce. Dorothy was married to Raymond H. Sleeter. He died in 1986. She is survived by three daughters, Judith Sleeter of Schenectady, Barbara (Richard) Gorecki of Madison, Conn. and Mary (Michael) Mullen of Feura Bush; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one niece and two nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Olga D. Lamson and Jeanne E. Junco. There will be a graveside service Friday morning 11:00 at the Vale Cemetery (Brandywine Avenue entrance). SCHENECTADY Carroll Stowell, 86, passed away peacefully with his loving family nearby on September 25, 2005. Born in Nashua, N.H. on March 2, 1919 to the late Charles and Bertha (Foster) Stowell, he grew up in Merrimack, N.H. He graduated in 1940 with a B.S. from Norwich University and was salutatorian of his class. He entered the United States Army as a 2nd Lt. in 1941 serving with the 1st division Engineer Battalion as an executive officer in North Africa, Sicily and Normandy. Soon after landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944, he became the Commander of 112th Engineer Battalion for the rest of the European Campaign. Rising to the rank of Lt. Col., he was decorated with eight campaign stars, the Legion of Merit for holding open the north shoulder supply route during the Battle of the Bulge, French Croix de Guerre, a Silver Star for gallantry in action, a Bronze Star, three Presidential Unit Citations and a Purple Heart. On August 28, 1945, he married the love of his life, Wilberta Louise Elder. He was employed by General Electric Co. as an electrical engineer and manager of engineering services and continued on with 43 years of service retiring in 1983. A proud member of our community, Mr. Stowell served as an elder, treasurer and trustee of the Schenectady Church of Christ where he was a member for 51 years. He also served on 11 committees of the Schenectady County Chapter of the Association for Retarded Children where he was a board member, president and vice president, helping with its evolution and rapid growth. As a member of the New York State Association for Retarded Children, he was on the board of Governors, chairman of the nominating committee, assistant treasurer and treasurer. In 1996 he was honored as Volunteer of the Year. He served for 11 years on the Schenectady County Community Services Board and was given the Key to the City in 2002. Additionally, he served as program chairman for Cub Scout Pack #34 and was the Town of Niskayuna Citizen of the Month in 1989. He was a lifetime charter member of the Vernon Hovey Chapter of the VFW in Niskayuna. Recognized by the GE Elfun Society for outstanding community service, he was also a nominee for its Gerald L. Phillippe award for outstanding public service. Mr. Stowell is revered by his family as a man with great humility for his many accomplishments, who lived with a clear conscience, was considered a builder to humanity and a believer in making institutions serve mankind. As dedicated as he was to his community service, it was secondary to his devotion to his loving family. His greatest pleasure was being surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. Nothing made him prouder. Mr. Stowell is survived by Wilberta, his wife of 60 years. Survivors also include his sons, David Stowell and his wife Jill of Chino, Calif. and Robert Stowell of Scotia, N.Y.; his daughters, Jane Bland and her husband Bob of Denton, Texas and Nancy Hinrichsen and her husband Tom of Fairfax, Va.; a brother John Stowell of Morrison, Ill.; his grandchildren, Rebecca Bates of Texas, Ryan Bland and Micah Bland of Texas, Kevin and Christy Stowell of Calif. and Kayla and Olivia Hinrichsen of Va. In addition to his parents he is also predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Hills of Hollis, N.H. Red Thompson Sr., 64, of Hudson Avenue, died Monday, September 26, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital, Troy, after a brief illness. Born in Troy, July 25, 1941, he was the son of the late Ralph and Marie Severance Thompson. Red proudly served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963. Red was a dedicated and proud employee of the G. A. Bove and Sons, a fuel oil distributor of Mechanicville for almost 20 years, before retiring. Later, he acted as a transportation aide for the Stillwater School System's handicap students. A man who loved his community, Red served as a patrolman for the Village of Stillwater for a number of years, served with the Stillwater Rescue Squad, and was a former board of director for the squad. He also became involved with Troop 35, Boy Scouts of America for several years. Although his size was big and burly, Red was helpful and kind to all his family, neighbors, friends or anyone seeking help. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Jean Daley Thompson; a son Ralph W. Jr.; daughters Lori Crandall and Shelly Thompson, all of Stillwater; four grandchildren, Shawn and Ralph W. Thompson III, Stacy and Ashley Crandall, along with brother, George Thompson of Fla. and a sister, Deborah. Also survived by in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was employed by the Albany Medical Center School of Nursing full-time for 33 years and part-time for an additional 10 years. She was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary's Church in Albany for many years and was a member of the altar rosary society and the senior citizens at the church. She also was a member of the Albany Diocese First Friday Group and of the Tuesday and Thursday Senior Citizens of Guilderland. Mrs. Wendth was predeceased by her husband, Arthur J. Wendth, and her sister, Kathleen Sullivan. She is survived by her stepson, Dr. Arthur J.
