He came to Albany, New York, in 1856, being 19 years of age. In the same year he came to Maquoketa. In 1857 he was married to Miss Sarah Knight, who shared his home until his death. In 1874 they moved to a farm near Monmouth, where Joseph breathed his last breath, July 2, 1892. Ten children were born to them, five of whom are now living. He was converted in the year 1887 and united with the Methodist church, of which he has been a faithful and consistent member ever since, The funeral occurred at Monmouth in charge of Rev. Miller, his pastor, in the presence of a large circle of friends. The remains were brought to Maquoketa for burial and laid to rest in Mt. Hope cemetery.
